Detroit News poll: Rick Santorum leads Mitt Romney in Michigan

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has a slim lead over Mitt Romney, an indication the Michigan native son has yet to convince state voters he should be the Republican nominee for president, a Detroit News poll shows.

Santorum leads Romney 34 percent to 30.4 percent among likely Republican primary voters, but the gap is within the margin of error of 4.4 percentage points.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had support from 11.6 percent of respondents, former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul had 8.9 percent and 12.4 percent was undecided.

Despite Romney’s win here in 2008 and the built-in advantages of name recognition and familiarity, party regulars appear to have doubts about his conservative credentials and the worth of his Michigan ties. It may cost him the dominant primary victory many expected.

Greg Rotter, an attorney and Santorum supporter from Indian River, said: “Is (Romney) saying things to get elected?”

Santorum cannot win due to ballot access and his lack of appeal to independents who abhor his social conservative tendencies. At least he isn’t a globalist puppet like Romney and Gingrich though.

Santorium is incapable of being at the head of our Government or whats left of it and Mitt Romney is Obama lite. Newt has made mistakes but he has the capabilities of pulling the United States out of the gory mess Obama has made and he truly is the only one running that is capable of doing so. Newt and Sarah Palin together would make a compelling team and both would bring much of what the United States needs to survive to the table. Wake up America and elect the American Dream Team!!!

I do not believe it. I am from Michigan – Romney is leading no matter what a poll says.
However, I am telling everyone I know in Michigan to go for Dr. Paul – most of them are already. He is the only conservative constitutional candidate in the race. I am a senior and the only way I know to keep my social security money which the govt stole from me is do decrease debt, stop spending and return to a constitutional govt.
    Peace,

Ron Paul has the delegates. Doesn’t matter who’s ahead of whom, if they don’t have the delegates they don’t win. Who has the best ground game? Right now it is between Romney and Paul. I’m praying Paul will win. He was in Vancouver, WA. but I could’t go 🙁

  • WHAT IS WRONG! Why isn’t the GOP backing the ONLY candidate that can Kick Barack INSANE Obama’s ASS?
    N E W T! N E W T! N E W T!
ALL the others are decent. BUT Newt is the only ONE that will CRUSH Obama!

Newt Gingrich is worse than Obama. Nobody knows what he will do he’s such a flip flopper constantly swaying whichever way the political winds blow! He’s so divisive you ought to know he can’t pull in the independents required to win the general election! Quit dreaming! !!!!

How can Newt crush Obama with a thousand pounds of baggage in his backroom deals. Please…let’s get serious. You want a No Deals in the backroom, True Blue, Constitutional Conservative? Then vote Ron Paul. Look up “World Affairs Brief” on the Web, and get some real information. I’m so tired of the same old spin. Look at Judge Napolitano’s last Video from Fox. It is compelling to say the least.
