Cash-strapped Camden, New Jersey Disbanding its Police Force

Crime-ridden Camden, New Jersey – often referred to as the most dangerous city in the United States—is getting rid of its police department.

In the latest example of a cash-strapped municipality taking drastic measures to deal with swollen public sector liabilities and shrinking budgets, the city plans to disband its 460-member police department and replace it with a non-union “Metro Division” of the Camden County Police. Backers of the plan say it will save millions of dollars for taxpayers while ensuring public safety, but police unions say it is simply a way to get out of collective bargaining with the men and women in blue.

“This is definitely a form of union-busting,” Camden Fraternal Order of Police President John Williamson told “This method is unproven and untested, to put your faith in an agency that doesn’t even [yet] exist.”

Camden County Mayor Dana Redd has said layoffs of the city’s police force will begin by the end of the month. Only 49 percent of current city police officers will be transferred to the new county division, whose members will begin a four- to five-month training program.

Joseph Eisenhardt, president of the Camden County Police Chiefs Association, stated “There is a crisis, but this is not the solution. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.”

One more example of the now obsoete unions. Notice though, their bosses are still raking in the cash and benefits.

What a great idea! Don’t allow any concealed carry permits and then take the police away. I am betting property is going pretty cheap. What better way to open the doors for the crime lords. I may be wrong, but last I knew, NJ was one of the states that it is difficult to get a carry permit and only the criminals will have the luxury of high cap mags. I can’t imagine a more inviting place for the criminal element than one without police, or in this case it sounds like rent-a-cops in a place known for strict gun laws. Way to go!! Then again, this will prove how disarming the public and taking away the appearance of safety that police give, will show those anti gun nuts what the ones who think have been saying. Of course if you had more legally carried guns, it would mean a lot of bodies, but at least it would be mostly the criminals instead of the defenseless victims. I am going to definitely keep my eyes on this. That is provided those idiots in Washington don’t use last weeks tragedy and pass their usual knee jerk, poorly thought out, law that puts everyone in jeopardy like all the other laws they have done previously like that. That way when one of the countries that already think of us as weak with a pansy leader, decides to come here and we have no way to fight back to protect ourselves in that way either. Keep in mind for those who think this won’t/can’t happen, we all thought it would never happen twice before when we were thought of as the strongest nation. Pearl Harbor was even told about it hours earlier but refused to believe it and just took a beating. Then no one thought anyone would try to attack New York as well. I already see a place in NJ that would be a nice place to start.
