An illegal immigrant from Guatemala – who has prior felony convictions for driving under the influence and possession of a controlled substance – is accused of hitting a motorcyclist in Omaha, Nebraska, with his vehicle, accelerating over him and then crushing the man to death as he fled the scene.

Luis Velasquez-Ortiz, 42, was charged on April 11 in the hit-and-run death of Juan J. Moreno-Tamayo, a 31-year-old motorcyclist and father of four children. On Monday, a judge in Omaha declared Velasquez-Ortiz a flight risk and set his bond at $2 million. . .

The man was reportedly driving a Ford Explorer when he failed to yield at a stop sign and collided with a motorcyclist, who got stuck underneath the vehicle. Rather than attempting to help the victim under his vehicle, Velasquez-Ortiz allegedly accelerated, crushing the man again as he fled the scene of the crash.
