Rock Bottom: Establishment Money and Lies Beat Conservative Warrior in Kansas

It’s official: conservatives have no place in the Republican Party.

Not only has every incumbent RINO been reelected in this “year of the outsider.” Not only has almost every open seat gone to the yes-men for K Street and GOP leadership. One of the few brave conservative incumbents in the House has just been defeated by a shill for the big government lobbyists who lied to voters and ran as a conservative. Thus, the only incumbent to be defeated this year was Tim Huelskamp, R-Ky. (A, 91%) in Kansas’s First District. You read that right: the only incumbent to go down in this glorious “populist” revolution is one of the fiercest fighters against this rigged political system.

While everyone is a big hero now and ridicules John Boehner as a failure, Huelskamp was literally the first member to stand up to him. Now the lobbyists know how to pick our lock and will pick off the few remaining members who dare to defy those in the party who want to do nothing more than play interference for Democrats.

So much for the revolution.

You can read more about this race in my post from last week.

Folks, at some point we need to stop exemplifying the definition of insanity. What we are doing is not working. The party runs candidates with tons of money who lie about who they are and smear our people as political insiders who are anything but true conservatives. The waters are so muddied that the candidate with the most money and lobbyist support wins.

We must be reminded of the admonition of Haggai:

“You have sown much and you bring in little. You eat without being satiated. You drink without getting your fill. You dress, and it has no warmth. And he who profits, profits into a bundle with holes.” [Haggai 1:6]

It’s real simple: we either reform the primary system back to representative conventions where money and lobbyists are blunted by grassroots activists or we start a third party.

This current system is so rigged against principled constitutionalists that even when the voters agree with us on the issues, we have nothing to show for it this year but a candidate at the top who is tied with Hillary in several red states and not a single conservative winning down ballot.

If 28 years of failure since Reagan has not proven that conservatives have no future in this party, tonight’s election should serve as a wakeup call. (For more from the author of “Rock Bottom: Establishment Money and Lies Beat Conservative Warrior in Kansas” please click HERE)

3 Ways to Talk About Conservatism With a Liberal

As the mantra of “Don’t discuss politics or religion” repeats like a drumbeat in your head, you settle on “How about that game?”

Your desperate search for the safest question to ask a colleague as you wait for the morning coffee to brew is understandable. But you can find a way.

If conservatives refrain from engaging in the narrative, we let the media and politicians (ahem, President Barack Obama) paint us as crazy people who cling to “guns or religion.”

That’s where this column comes in—a place to help you talk to the people in your life (think neighbors, co-workers, family, friends) about conservative issues.

Trust me, it’s possible.

While I will explore a wide variety of relevant topics in the weeks to come, I’d like to start with something basic and broad: the term “conservative.”

Connecting

If you look at The Heritage Foundation’s definition, you find that conservatism is five pillars: free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.

So, there’s your answer, right? Just memorize and repeat when someone wants to know why you are conservative.

Wrong.

There is no faster way to kill a conversation than to categorize your perspective like it’s a to-do list.

When talking about any issue, you have to connect with the other person’s interests. And that starts by being a good listener.

If you find your colleague doesn’t give much insight into her ideology, ask questions. Find out what makes her tick by starting a conversation about her day at work or what’s going on in the news. It’s amazing how much you learn when you ask a question and then … stop talking.

Comment

Once you gain insight into what issues someone cares about, the real work begins. You now have a blueprint for how to approach the conversation in a way that resonates with him or her, not you.

For example, if you find that your colleague talks about how expensive it is to run her side business, the free enterprise pillar is a good area to explore. Now, you’re off to the races.

Here are a few strategies that work well:

1. Common Ground

Don’t underestimate the power of establishing common ground. Doing so makes you seem reasonable and can go a long way in diffusing any tension or unwillingness to hear you out. If you’re in agreement with someone on the goal, like his business succeeding, he is more likely to stick around and listen to your solution.

2. Examples

Don’t underestimate the power of relatable examples, which can help people visualize your point. Often, the conservative principles we talk about can seem very abstract. Examples put issues into context, especially when you can illustrate a point using a reference from their daily lives. For instance, if you want to promote free enterprise, talk about all the regulations their business currently faces and how there would be significantly fewer if free enterprise was more valued by our lawmakers.

3. Words

Finally, you have to use the right words. Don’t even think about using the term “free enterprise.” Instead, steal a page from the liberals’ playbook: use emotion to push an agenda. Own words like “fair” or “choice,” and statements like “you know better than a bureaucrat in D.C.” Using emotional language will set you up for success.

Before you think that attempting a conversation is hopeless because “you don’t know how liberal my co-workers are,” keep in mind that people will listen if you talk about issues that matter to them. If done well, it’s possible they won’t recognize that you are approaching the conversation from a conservative perspective.

Take millennials. You may think it’s hopeless to talk to that generation about free enterprise since so many view themselves as socialists. But when millennials are starting more businesses than the baby-boomer generation there’s reason to question their dedication to socialism (Do they really know what socialism is?) and an opportunity to use their entrepreneurism as a gateway to talking about free enterprise.

So, talk to a liberal today. Employ the strategies we just discussed and see if you can have a meaningful conversation about conservatism on her terms. Identify her interests, choose one of the five pillars that align with her interests, and use examples.

No pressure, but you may be the only conservative that tries to challenge her world view. And if we are going to preserve the American dream, it’s going to take all of us doing our part by first talking to the people we know. Conservatives Push Leadership to Deny Obama His Last Lame-Duck Session

While lawmakers are away from Capitol Hill on August recess, the two largest conservative caucuses in Congress are working to keep a lame-duck spending bill from getting off the ground after the elections.

Before Congress recessed, the Freedom Caucus and Republican Study Committee gathered enough signatures to force GOP leadership into scheduling a conference to discuss the party’s plan for funding the federal government, The Daily Signal has learned.

That moves coincides with a shift in conservative strategy on government funding. Conservatives aren’t trying to reduce spending anymore this year. They’re trying to buy time.

“Are we going to reduce the deficit, yes or no?” Rep. Dave Brat, R-Va., asked in an interview with The Daily Signal. “The answer is no and the American people aren’t happy with that. So now we just need to do damage control.”

Reducing government spending remains the long-term goal for conservatives, Brat said. But for now, their immediate concern is preventing any new increases before the year ends.

That requires convincing the GOP conference to abandon a stalled appropriations process and to adopt instead a continuing resolution, a measure that would lock in government spending at current levels until next March.

“[Republican Study Committee Chairman] Bill Flores and a number of us have called for a special conference on the [continuing resolution] issue,” Freedom Caucus Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, told The Daily Signal. “When we get back, we’re going to push for a longer [continuing resolution] that gets us to next session.”

Conservatives won’t have much time to make their case when Congress returns to session Sept. 6. To avoid a shutdown, lawmakers must reach a deal before the government’s spending authority expires at the end of the fiscal year Sept. 30.

But by reaching a permanent deal now, conservatives hope to avoid a last-minute omnibus bill later during the lame-duck session, which follows the Nov. 8 elections and precedes the swearing-in of the new president and Congress in January.

There are significant trade-offs, though. Conservatives would have to surrender and abandon their long-standing budget battle with leadership.

Since last January, spending hawks have tried to torpedo the $1.07 trillion Obama-Boehner budget deal backed by House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis. The continuing resolution currently pushed by members of the Freedom Caucus would set top-line spending $30 billion below that level.

But that relatively small amount is worth it, Jordan told The Daily Signal, because while conservatives loath higher spending, “experience and recent history” have taught them to fear the lame duck more.

“Many members are willing to tolerate the spending level that we don’t think is right,” Jordan said, “but we can only tolerate that if we can avoid the lame duck, if we can get the right time frame.”

Part of every congressional life cycle, the lame-duck session occurs after the November election but before newly elected lawmakers arrive in Washington. Unaccountable to their constituents, outgoing politicians often use the window to help pass controversial legislation.

If Congress votes on an omnibus spending bill during the lame-duck session, conservatives fear, liberals will try to slip policy riders on controversial subjects into the must-pass piece of legislation.

The session, for instance, represents the last best chance for President Barack Obama to advance his marquee trade agreement, the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership. The White House indicated in June that it plans to run a two-minute drill on trade during the lame duck.

“There is a pathway forward here,” U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman, the White House’s ambassador on trade matters, told The New York Times. “And what we’re trying to do right now is just maximize the likelihood that we’ll be able to walk down that path successfully.”

As Obama’s exit from the White House approaches, anxiety over the lame-duck session has increased exponentially.

“The session happens every time there’s an election,” a senior Republican aide told The Daily Signal. “But what are Obama and Reid going to try and get though now that it’s their last time around?”

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., will retire Jan. 3 after 30 years in the Senate.

If Congress passes a continuing resolution now, conservatives argue, there won’t be any pressure to pass an omnibus spending bill later and no legislative vehicle for amendments by Democrats.

The conservative strategy already has gained some traction among Senate Republicans.

“I’m not a fan of kicking things into a lame-duck session,” Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn of Texas told reporters before Congress adjourned for recess. “If you held a gun to my head and made me choose the length of the [continuing resolution] as the last option, I’d say let’s kick this over into the first part of next year.”

House leadership, however, has been hesitant to get on board.

Ryan has made funding the government according to regular order a top priority during his short tenure as House speaker. Congress should pass individual spending bills for specific government programs, the Wisconsin representative argues, rather than a one-and-done omnibus package.

But with only 17 legislative days before Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year, many on Capitol Hill see a continuing resolution as inevitable. And Democrats are already fighting to defeat any continuing resolution that puts spending levels on autopilot until next March.

“We would be very strongly opposed to that. It wouldn’t happen,” Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., the third-ranking Senate Democrat, told Politico. “We’re going to work and get a good omnibus bill.”

Conservatives say House leadership has been unresponsive so far to their pleas for a continuing resolution. A senior leadership aide told The Daily Signal that “no decisions have been made” about embracing a continuing resolution.

The longer Republicans wait to vote on a continuing resolution, Brat said, the more likely it is that Congress will make a last-minute deal in December.

“Do we want leadership negotiating right before Christmas like they have these last two years?” the Virginia Republican asked, “when we bust the spending caps again, increase the deficit even more, and lose all conservative policy riders?”

“That’s the last thing we want and that’s why we want a [continuing resolution] going into March,” Brat concluded.

The conservative effort to end the lame-duck session isn’t anything new. A group of 75 conservative organizations sent an April 14 letter to Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., urging them to take steps to avoid a lame duck.

That effort hasn’t always been warmly received.

“What has the Freedom Caucus been fighting about—on not doing the budget all year—if they’re going to turn around and cave on a [$1.07 trillion] level at the last minute,” a senior Republican staffer told The Daily Signal.

More establishment Republicans complain that major legislative business wouldn’t be necessary in a lame-duck session if conservatives would have gotten on board with higher spending earlier on.

Things won’t “magically” look better for conservatives next year anyway, the staffer predicted, suggesting Democrats could win the Senate and the White House on Nov. 8.

“Don’t they realize they could be negotiating with a Majority Leader [Chuck] Schumer and a President Clinton? What then?” (For more from the author of “Conservatives Push Leadership to Deny Obama His Last Lame-Duck Session” please click HERE)

Trump Makes Ominous Prediction About November Vote

In his latest expression of the odds he sees against him, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said Monday he has concerns about the integrity of this fall’s presidential election.

“I’m afraid the election’s going to be rigged, I have to be honest,” Trump told a crowd in Columbus, Ohio, during a campaign appearance. He did not go into detail.

Complaints about a “rigged system” have been a feature of Trump’s campaign, targeting first the Republican establishment and later the efforts of the Democratic Party to hamstring the campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

“We’ll will never be able to fix a rigged system by counting on the same people who have rigged it in the first place,” Trump said in a June speech. “The insiders wrote the rules of the game to keep themselves in power and in the money. That’s why we’re asking Bernie Sanders’ voters to join our movement: so together we can fix the system for all Americans. So important. This includes fixing all of our many disastrous trade deals. … Because it’s not just the political system that’s rigged, it’s the whole economy. It’s rigged by big donors who want to keep wages down. It’s rigged by big businesses who want to leave our country, fire our workers, and sell their products back into the United States with absolutely no consequences for them. It’s rigged by bureaucrats who are trapping kids in failing schools. It’s rigged against you, the American people.”

As for the impact of the “rigged” system on the election, Trump supporter Roger Stone has said voter fraud is “widespread” and that if Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton wins a state like Florida after polls show Trump in the lead, the election would be “illegitimate.”

“If there’s voter fraud, this election will be illegitimate, the election of the winner will be illegitimate, we will have a constitutional crisis, widespread civil disobedience, and the government will no longer be the government,” Stone said. He also promised a “bloodbath” if the Democrats attempt to “steal” the election.

During Trump’s Columbus appearance on Monday, he focused on the economy.

“They call it the Rust Belt for a reason: because everything is rusting and rotting,” Trump said. “They’ve lost their jobs, they’re moving to Mexico.

He said that if elected, he would end the cycle of companies that move U.S. jobs to Mexico.

“If you leave Ohio, you’re not going to make your product and sell it back to Ohio . … You’re going to have a tax to pay,” Trump said. (For more from the author of “Trump Makes Ominous Prediction About November Vote” please click HERE)

An After School Satan Club Could Be Coming to Your Kid’s Elementary School

It’s a hot summer night, and leaders of the Satanic Temple have gathered in the crimson-walled living room of a Victorian manse in this city renowned for its witch trials in the 17th century. They’re watching a sepia-toned video, in which children dance around a maypole, a spider crawls across a clown’s face and eerie, ambient chanting gives way to a backward, demonic voice-over. The group chuckles with approval.

They’re here plotting to bring their wisdom to the nation’s public elementary school children. They point out that Christian evangelical groups already have infiltrated the lives of America’s children through after-school religious programming in public schools, and they appear determined to give young students a choice: Jesus or Satan.

“It’s critical that children understand that there are multiple perspectives on all issues, and that they have a choice in how they think,” said Doug Mesner, the Satanic Temple’s co-founder.

On Monday, the group plans to introduce its After School Satan Club to public elementary schools, including one in Prince George’s County, petitioning school officials to allow them to open immediately as the academic year starts. Chapter heads from New York, Boston, Utah and Arizona were in Salem on July 10 talking strategy, with others from Minneapolis, Detroit, San Jose, New Orleans, Pittsburgh and Florida participating online. The promotional video, which feels like a mash-up of a horror movie trailer and a “Saturday Night Live” sketch, will serve to promote the new club along with its website — Afterschoolsatan.com. Another 4 Pinocchio Lie for Hillary Clinton

After officially becoming the Democratic Party nominee for president, Hillary Clinton made a rare media appearance, going on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace for an exclusive post-Democratic National Convention interview. During the interview, Clinton made some comments about her email server that raised eyebrows and inspired a Washington Post fact-check.

As the topic of Hillary Clinton’s email server came up in the interview, Wallace played video of Clinton saying “I did not email any classified material to anyone on my email. There is no classified materials. I am confident that I never sent nor received any information that was classified at the time. I had not sent classified material nor received anything marked classified.”

At the four minute mark in the interview, Clinton responds to that video by telling Chris Wallace that “Director Comey said my answers were truthful, and what I’ve said is consistent with what I have told the American people, that there were decisions discussed and made to classify retroactively certain of the emails.”

The problem is that isn’t what Director Comey said. In his statement on the FBI’s investigation into Clinton’s email server, Director Comey described Hillary Clinton’s and her colleague’s actions as “extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information.”

Additionally, Comey revealed that “seven e-mail chains concern matters that were classified at the Top Secret/Special Access Program level when they were sent and received. These chains involved Secretary Clinton both sending e-mails about those matters and receiving e-mails from others about the same matters.”

The Washington Post awarded Clinton’s claim FOUR Pinocchios, indicating Clinton egregiously contorted the facts to her favor.

Hillary Clinton’s decision to appear on Fox News comes after a very patriotic Democratic Convention in which American flag-waving delegates shouted down anti-war protesters with chants of “USA!” and the Democrats paraded military officials on stage to sing Clinton’s praises and denounce the Republican nominee.

Some believe that Clinton is making a play for national-security-first Republicans who are uncomfortable with Donald Trump as commander-in-chief. Appearing on Fox News immediately after the DNC could be read as an overture to some of those voters.

But should Sec. Clinton intend to win those voters over, perhaps it would be best for her not to lie about that time she endangered national security by holding classified information on a private email server in violation of State Department protocol and federal law. Governor Issues Announcement – Zika Virus Spreading in This U.S. State

Governor Rick Scott, (R, Fla.), has announced that the number of people with the Zika virus in the state of Florida has risen from 4 to 14.

The Florida Department of Health maintains that the outbreak is confined to a small area of Miami-Dade county, a place known as the Wynwood arts district.

The district has a number of areas where water can collect and serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

When a woman is infected with Zika during pregnancy, the virus can cause numerous, serious birth defects.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “there is no vaccine or medicine for Zika.”

The CDC states that there are four common symptoms of the virus including fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes).

The center also notes that the infection can be spread through mosquito bites, from a pregnant woman to her child, from sex, and likely from blood transfusions.

There has also been level 2 alert issued for travel to Brazil, where there has been an outbreak of the virus.

Gov. Scott announced, “Following today’s announcement, I have requested that the CDC activate their emergency response team to assist DOH in their investigation, research, and sample collection efforts. Their team will consist of public health experts whose role is to augment our response efforts to confirmed local transmissions of the Zika virus.”

More than 200 individuals in Miami-Dade and Broward counties have been tested for the virus. Authorities report these individuals live or work near those who likely picked up the disease from mosquitoes.

Two women and twelve men have been identified to likely have the virus. (For more from the author of “Governor Issues Announcement – Zika Virus Spreading in This U.S. State” please click HERE)

Judge Considers Temporary Halt to Implementation of NC Bathroom Law

Kicking off what is expected to be a long legal battle, the U.S. Justice Department and the American Civil Liberties Union asked a federal judge to temporarily block parts of North Carolina’s bathroom law from being enforced.

If the judge agrees, provisions of House Bill 2, which mandates that people use bathrooms and locker rooms in schools, public universities, and other government buildings based on the gender listed on their birth certificates, would be put on hold until the court has a chance to hear their case, which is set to begin Nov. 14.

“Every day that House Bill 2 remains on the books, transgender people in North Carolina remain in the perilous position of being forced to avoid public restrooms or risk violation of state law,” Chris Brook, legal director of the ACLU of North Carolina, said in a press release. “This cruel, insulting, and unconstitutional law targets transgender people in North Carolina and causes irreparable harm. It must be put on hold while it is reviewed by the court.”

The ACLU joined forces with Lambda Legal and Jenner & Block to bring their case. Their case was consolidated with a similar challenge brought forth by the Justice Department. On Monday, the groups asked the court for a preliminary injunction to “seek immediate relief for transgender people,” arguing that it’s in the public’s interest.

Tami Fitzgerald, executive director of the North Carolina Values Coalition, which supports HB 2, said she believes parents would “revolt” if the judge were to grant the temporary exception.

“This is absurd and ridiculous,” Fitzgerald, who was present at Monday’s court hearing, said. “I think if the court were to find itself in the unfortunate end of the legally incorrect decision of agreeing with the DOJ, the parents of this country would revolt because HB 2 protects the privacy of everyone, but especially school children who are at an impressionable age.”

Gov. Pat McCrory, a Republican, signed HB 2 into law in March. The law requires people to use bathrooms and locker rooms in government buildings in accordance with the gender listed on their birth certificate.

Lawmakers enacted HB 2 after the city of Charlotte passed a nondiscrimination ordinance that allows transgender people to use bathrooms, locker rooms, and other sex-specific facilities in accordance with their gender identity.

The measure applies to all government buildings, including public schools and universities.

Under the law, if transgender people take the step of changing their birth certificate, they are allowed to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity.

HB 2 has received strong pushback from the business community, culminating with the NBA pulling its All-Star Game out from the state.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Schroeder heard the case in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.

Fitzgerald said Monday’s hearing went for nearly five hours, and that Schroeder “was really trying to hear both sides.”

In addition to the concerns of transgender people, at issue were safety and privacy concerns of students and parents.

“He asked a lot of questions about practical accommodations in showers and seemed rightly concerned about children in public schools,” Fitzgerald.

Joaquín Carcaño, 28, a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill employee and transgender man who is the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit, called HB 2 “humiliating” in a press release issued Monday.

“All I want is to use the appropriate restroom, in peace, just like everyone else. It’s humiliating that this law separates me from my peers and treats me like a second-class citizen.”

The University of North Carolina is named as a defendant in the case, along with McCrory. According to Fitzgerald, lawyers for the school asked the judge to be dropped from the case because President Margaret Spellings said she wouldn’t enforce HB 2. Fitzgerald said the judge then asked how the University of North Carolina gets to choose which laws to enforce.

“The judge seemed rather unhappy that the UNC system unilaterally decided not to enforce HB 2,” Fitzgerald said, adding the judge “never got a good answer.”

It is unclear when the judge plans to issue his ruling on the temporary injunction. Fitzgerald said he appeared eager to “figure it out,” “maybe in the next week or two.” (For more from the author of “Judge Considers Temporary Halt to Implementation of NC Bathroom Law” please click HERE)

Hillary Clinton ‘Loves’ the Idea of Appointing Obama to Supreme Court

Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton said she “loves” the idea of appointing Barack Obama to the Supreme Court if she’s elected president.

At a campaign event in Iowa Tuesday, Mrs. Clinton told the crowd the next president may have to appoint up to three Supreme Court justices. When one attendee mentioned Mr. Obama as a contender, she seemed excited by the recommendation.

“Wow, what a great idea. No one has ever suggested that to me, I love that, wow,” Mrs. Clinton said. “He may have a few other things to do, but I tell you, that’s a great idea. (Read more from “Hillary Clinton ‘Loves’ the Idea of Appointing Obama to Supreme Court” HERE)

Actress Susan Sarandon: Hillary Clinton ‘More Dangerous’ Than Trump

Hollywood actress and activist Susan Sarandon says former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would be a more dangerous U.S. president than Donald Trump — provided she’s not indicted first.

Ms. Sarandon, a supporter of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign, told a liberal news outlets this week that Mrs. Clinton’s track record portends a much worse future than anything Mr. Trump might catalyze as commander in chief.

“I believe in a way she is more dangerous,” the actress told The Young Turks on Thursday. “They’re both talking to Henry Kissinger, apparently. … She did not learn from Iraq, and she is an interventionist, and she has done horrible things — and very callously. I don’t know if she is overcompensating or what her trip is. That scares me. I think we’ll be in Iran in two seconds.”

The former “Thelma and Louise” star said voters are being “fed” a message that Mr. Trump is “so dangerous” when his promises on illegal immigration amount to a wall being built.

“I don’t know what his policy is. I do know what her policies are, I do know who she is taking money from. I do know that she is not transparent, and I do know that nobody calls her on it,” the Oscar-winning actress continued.
