Marijuana: Oregon and Alaska Could Be Next to Legalize Recreational Use

Photo Credit: Steve Dipaola / REUTERSIf marijuana advocates have their way, the number of states where recreational pot is legal could double this year.

On the November ballot in Oregon and Alaska are measures allowing the sale of recreational marijuana to adults. If those initiatives pass, the two states would join Colorado and Washington in legalizing cannabis.

Meanwhile, Florida voters will decide on a constitutional amendment legalizing the use of marijuana for medical purposes. That would make it the 24th state, plus the District of Columbia, to legalize medical marijuana.

In Oregon Thursday, supporters of marijuana legalization turned in 145,000 signatures – far more than the 87,213 valid signatures of registered voters necessary to qualify as a ballot initiative.

“The Control, Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana and Industrial Hemp Act strictly regulates marijuana sales and possession,” according to New Approach Oregon, the advocacy group that submitted signatures to the Oregon secretary of state. “It legalizes the use of marijuana by adults only and taxes marijuana and its products to generate money for education, public safety, drug treatment, and drug prevention.”

Alaska Republican Assembly Endorses Joe Miller for U.S. Senate

The Alaska Republican Assembly (“AKRA”) has voted by a super-majority to endorse Joe Miller for U.S. Senate.

The group’s Vice President Ron Johnson stated, “The bar for endorsement by the AKRA is high; a Republican candidate must receive the vote of two-third’s of the voting members at the endorsement convention.” Only 4 of the 72 candidates running for office in Alaska reached this threshold. “AKRA actively works to develop and promote true conservative Republican candidates for public offices. In short, we are the Republican wing of the Republican Party,” said Johnson. AKRA strongly identifies with the principles championed by Ronald Reagan.

Miller responded to the endorsement stating, “I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Alaska Republican Assembly. I am convinced that only a return to our constitutional foundations, along with the economic and moral principles that made this greatest on earth, will enable us to overcome this present crisis.”

Just this week, it was reported that the nation’s Gross Domestic Product decreased at an annual rate of 2.9 percent, significantly more than previously reported. Ronald Reagan and one of his chief economic advisors Milton Friedman could have easily predicted that outcome. When you tax and regulate something more, you get less of it. It’s as simple as that. As Friedman famously noted, “If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in five years there would be a shortage of sand.”

That is what Barack Obama and one of his most reliable lieutenants in the U.S. Senate, liberal Democrat Mark Begich, have done to our nation: higher taxes, more regulation, the takeover of our healthcare system, and the list goes on.

“It can be morning again in America, but it will require new leadership in Washington,” stated Miller. “I am committed to being part of the solution, not part of the problem. As Ronald Reagan said, ‘It is time for us to realize that we’re too great a nation to limit ourselves to small dreams. We’re not, as some would have us believe, doomed to an inevitable decline. I do not believe in a fate that will fall on us no matter what we do. I do believe in a fate that will fall on us if we do nothing. So, with all the creative energy at our command, let us begin an era of national renewal. Let us renew our determination, our courage, and our strength. And let us renew our faith and our hope.'”

8.0-Magnitude Earthquake Causes Tsunami Warning For Alaskan Islands

An 8.0-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Aleutian Arc of islands, sometimes called the Rat Islands, between Russia and Alaska at 4:53:10 p.m. EDT (11:53 a.m. local time) on Monday.

The quake created a tsunami warning for the coastal regions of Alaska from Nikolski to Attu.

What was originally a 7.1-magnitude earthquake was upgraded to 8.0. It seems to be too deep to pose a threat to Hawaii, according to the National Weather Service. The latest bulletin indicates that other areas of the U.S. and Canadian Pacific coasts would not be affected.

The alert says: “No tsunami threat exists for other coastal areas in the Pacific, although some other areas may experience small nondestructive sea-level changes lasting up to several hours.”

By The Extinction Protocol.

ALASKA – Sharply increased seismic activity and volcanic eruptions in the Aleutian Islands and the far western Brooks Range are being investigated by scientists. The Alaska Volcano Observatory says the activity over the past few months is the most seen by the station in 26 years. On the Alaska Volcano Observatory three volcanoes are classified with a yellow alert level—signifying signs of elevated unrest above known background levels—and three are at an orange alert level—heightened unrest with increased likelihood of eruption. Orange is the second-highest alert level after red signifying an eruption that is imminent or underway.

Begich Earmarked Millions for Bankrupt Green Energy Company

Photo Credit: APAs Sen. Mark Begich (D., Alaska) seeks to shore up his energy policy credentials, a now-bankrupt green energy company to which he steered federal subsidies could cloud his message.

Begich received campaign contributions from a lobbyist for an Alaska geothermal plant after helping the company obtain federal financing. The company is now bankrupt, but Begich continues touting his support for alternative energy.

The senator, who is facing reelection in November, will address the Alaska Wood Energy Conference on Wednesday. The conference brings together leaders in the state’s biomass industry.

He has also promoted fossil fuel development, including effort to open areas of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil exploration, and to approve the Keystone XL pipeline.

However, Begich’s critics are pointing to his involvement with a now-bankrupt Alaska utility as evidence of a troubling record on energy policy.

The 10 Most Corrupt States in the U.S.

Photo Credit: Jimmy Emerson, DVM / Creative Commons When we think of government corruption (as one tends to do), our biased minds often gravitate to thoughts of military juntas and third world governments. But, of course, corruption is everywhere, in one form or another. And it’s costing U.S. citizens big time.

A new study from researchers at the University of Hong Kong and the University of Indiana estimates that corruption on the state level is costing Americans in the 10 most corrupt states an average of $1,308 per year, or 5.2% of those states’ average expenditures per year.

The researchers studied more than 25,000 convictions of public officials for violation of federal corruption laws between 1976 and 2008 as well as patterns in state spending to develop a corruption index that estimates the most and least corrupt states in the union. Based on this method, the the most corrupt states are:

1. Mississippi
2. Louisiana
3. Tennessee
4. Illinois
5. Pennsylvania
6. Alabama
7. Alaska
8. South Dakota
9. Kentucky
10. Florida

Congressman Thomas Massie Endorses Joe Miller for U.S. Senate

Photo Credit: Gage SkidmoreCitizens for Joe Miller is pleased to announce Congressman Thomas Massie, one of the leading conservatives in the US House, has endorsed Joe Miller for United States Senate.

“I am honored and humbled by the support of Congressman Massie,” said Miller. “He is a member of an outstanding new generation of congressional leaders, whose ranks I’m sure will grow this November. He has demonstrated that he has what it takes to confront the culture of corruption in Washington. I am proud to have his endorsement, and with the support of my fellow Alaskans, I look forward to standing shoulder-to-shoulder with him in the fight for restore our liberties.”

Below is Congressman Massie’s statement:

“As one in the trenches in the battle to restore Constitutional government, I can tell you that we are in dire need of reinforcements in both the House and the Senate.

I need colleagues that I can count on to act with the courage of their convictions. That’s why I am endorsing Joe Miller for US Senate in Alaska.

Joe is not only a committed Christian, he is a family man, decorated combat veteran, former State Magistrate and Federal Magistrate Judge, and an accomplished attorney. He has proven his mettle as one who will stand up to the political establishment and powerful corporate interests to fight for what is right.

Washington is out of control. The collusion of entrenched politicians and crony capitalism increasingly threaten the very foundations of self-government and our way of life. The national debt now exceeds our GDP. Deficits are unsustainable. And the federal bureaucracy is unaccountable.

If you believe in the Right to life, Constitutional liberty, lower taxes, free markets, and accountable government, join me in supporting Joe Miller for United States Senate.

With your help, we can make 2014 a banner year for liberty.”

Congressman Massie joins a growing list of endorsements that includes: Alaska Right to Life, Gun Owners of America, General William “Jerry” Boykin, Combat Veterans for Congress, nationally syndicated talk radio host Lars Larson, and the National Association for Gun Rights.

Miller on Tea Party Victory in Virginia: ‘We the People’ Put Establishment in Its Place

Photo Credit: waltarrrrr / Creative Commons U.S. Senate candidate Joe Miller congratulated Dave Brat on his victory tonight over House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in Virginia’s 7th District Republican Primary.

“I want to congratulate Dave Brat on his great victory in Virginia tonight. Those in the Republican Establishment have done all they can this election cycle to announce the demise of the tea party movement with bold predictions of ‘crushing them everywhere.’ Well, maybe they should have checked with the grassroots before making such proclamations,” said Miller. “From Jolly in Florida to Sasse in Nebraska to McDaniel in Mississippi to Brat in Virginia, the tea party is proving that the people and not the party bosses or would-be king-makers in DC have the final say.”

Brat overcame Cantor’s significant monetary advantage and media presence to defeat the GOP Party leader. At the end of the last reporting period in March, Brat had $40,000 on hand to Cantor’s over $2 million. Cantor raised over $5 million for his re-election bid to Brat’s $200,000 in contributions. Cantor’s campaign released a poll last Friday conducted by John McLaughlin of McLaughlin & Associates, reported on by the Washington Post, showing Cantor with a 34-point lead over his tea party challenger (62 to 28 percent). Brat defeated Cantor by approximately 55 to 46 percent.

In 2010, Miller defeated Senator Lisa Murkowski in the Republican primary despite polling by Alaskan firm Dittman Research showing him trailing by 37 points weeks before the election. Murkowski, like Cantor, enjoyed a substantial monetary advantage of $2 million on hand at the end of June to Miller’s $100,000.

Dittman Research recently released a poll (without publishing the supporting data) showing Miller running over twenty points down against his primary opponents. The owner of the research firm is a max contributor to establishment candidate Mead Treadwell. Miller recently defeated Treadwell in a debate in his rival’s hometown of Anchorage, winning the straw poll following the debate. Less than a week before Miller won the Alaska Republican Assembly’s straw poll taking 76 percent of the vote, to Treadwell’s 18 percent, and Dan Sullivan’s 6 percent. Both indicate Miller has strong grassroots support as he did in 2010.

Amnesty and government spending were two of the decisive issues in Virginia’s 7th District primary race. Miller faces two Establishment candidates, Treadwell, who openly advocates for amnesty and Dan Sullivan who is heavily backed by those advocating for it, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and billionaire moderate Republican Paul Singer. Miller was the only candidate to come out publicly against the Murray-Ryan budget deal, when it was being debated last fall.

“The Party elite always play the same game: use unreliable polling and the media to try to convince voters there is no way to defeat their hand-picked candidates. The people are not buying it,” said Miller spokesman Randy DeSoto. “They know Washington is the problem and sending more there who want to play the Establishment game will not restore freedom or revive our economy. Based on what we’ve been seeing here in Alaska, the grassroots have another surprise in store for the Establishment in August.”

Russian Bombers Fly Within 50 Miles of California Coast

Photo Credit: APFour Russian strategic bombers triggered U.S. air defense systems while conducting practice bombing runs near Alaska this week, with two of the Tu-95 Bear H aircraft coming within 50 miles of the California coast, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) confirmed Wednesday.

“The last time we saw anything similar was two years ago on the Fourth of July,” Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Norad spokesman, told the Free Beacon.

Davis said the latest Bear H incursions began Monday around 4:30 p.m. Pacific time when radar detected the four turbo-prop powered bombers approaching the U.S. air defense zone near the far western Aleutian Islands.

Two U.S. Air Force F-22 jets were scrambled and intercepted the bombers over the Aleutians.

After tracking the bombers as they flew eastward, two of the four Bears turned around and headed west toward the Russian Far East. The bombers are believed to be based at the Russian strategic base near Anadyr, Russia.

Alaska School Gets $127K Penalty for Animal Deaths

Photo Credit: destination arctic circle / Creative Commons The University of Alaska Fairbanks has been penalized $127,100 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture after 12 musk oxen died from malnutrition at the school’s large animal research station earlier this decade.

An administrative law judge for the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued the civil penalty Thursday for violating of the Animal Welfare Act. An animal rights group that initially filed a complaint over the deaths in 2011, prompting a USDA investigation, announced the penalty Tuesday.

The size of the penalty “tells me the USDA is sending a message to these facilities that they are no longer going to stand for these criminals that break the law, and we’re very happy to see this,” said Michael Budkie, executive director of the group Stop Animal Exploitation Now.

The university entered into the agreement without admitting fault.
