I happened to be trolling the television Sunday when I caught the last part of an incredible story about Lauren Hill. I immediately knew I had to write about this remarkable teenager but, alas, promptly forgot. Fortunately Kathy Ostrowski, of Kansans for Life, reminded me of this true-life story yesterday.

Kathy heard about the 19-year-old freshman who played her first collegiate basketball game Sunday night for Mount Saint Joseph University, a tiny Division III college located in Cincinnati, from NPR.

From the story by NPR’s Sam Sanders we learn:

So many people wanted to see Lauren Hill play that her school, Mount St. Joseph University, had to move the game from its 2,000-seat venue to another one in town that seats 10,000. The game still sold out. The crowd went wild just after Lauren Hill’s first basket right as the game began.

Why were these people so excited (and close to tears)? Because as a high school senior, Lauren was diagnosed with a very deadly form of brain cancer– Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG)–which is inoperable. She underwent nearly a year of chemotherapy and radiation. In September doctors told her she had months to live.

Obama Tries to Put His Best Face on a Gloomy Election

For anyone expecting postelection contrition at the White House or vows to change course after a disastrous election for Democrats, President Barack Obama had one message Wednesday: Think again.

A day after Democrats lost control of the Senate and suffered big losses in House and governors’ races across the country, Obama struck a defiant tone. He defended his policies, stood by his staff and showed few signs of changing an approach to dealing with congressional Republicans that has generated little more than gridlock in recent years.

Rather than accept the election results as a repudiation of his own administration, the president said voters were disenchanted with Washington as a whole. And rather than offering dour assessments of his party’s electoral thrashing, as he did after the 2010 midterms, the president insisted repeatedly that he was optimistic about the country’s future.

“It doesn’t make me mopey,” he said of the election during a news conference in the East Room of the White House. “It energizes me because it means that this democracy’s working.”

The president’s sunny outlook stood in sharp contrast to the gloomy electorate. Most voters leaving polling places said they didn’t have much trust in government and felt the nation was on the wrong track. Those feeling pessimistic were more likely to vote for Republican congressional candidates, according to exit polls.

Man Calls Daughter’s ‘Rapist’ Home, Tortures and Kills Him, Say Police

Furious over the alleged rape of his 14-year-old daughter by a 45-year-old married man, the father called the man to his house on Friday night, treated him to dinner and then tortured him to death, police said. He then went to the police station, surrendered himself and gave police a detailed account on how he tortured and murdered the man.

The 36-year-old reportedly burned the man’s genitals using heated tongs and then strangled him to death. The incident was reported from Northeast Delhi’s Khajuri Khas area on Saturday.

Based on the man’s statement, police said the deceased, a medicine supplier, had allegedly raped the man’s minor daughter two months ago. The father did not approach police fearing “a bad name for his daughter”.

“The father called the medicine supplier over to his house saying he wanted to discuss some issue. He served him dinner. After the meal, the father overpowered the man and tied him to a chair. He got heated tongs and burned the supplier’s genitals before strangling him to death. He came to the police station and surrendered himself,” an officer said.

The father reportedly gave police a detailed account of how he tortured the man to death.

AC/DC Drummer Busted for Trying to Have Two Men Murdered

He wanted a dirty deed done cheap — now he might be on the highway to hell.

The drummer for the iconic rock band AC/DC has been busted for trying to have two men murdered in New Zealand.

Founding member Phil Rudd’s waterfront home was raided and the “Hell’s Bells” rocker was hauled into a jail on a slew of charges including attempting to procure a murder, threats to kill and possession of meth and weed.

Rudd, 60, appeared in court Wednesday and was released on bail. The names of the people he allegedly wanted killed were not released.

His lawyer lashed out in court and said that the media just wanted to get photos of Rudd “at his worst,” a report said.

Islamic Mob Beats, Burns Pregnant Mother and Her Husband

Pakistani police say they have arrested up to 40 people in connection with the killing of a Christian couple in Punjab province who were beaten, then pushed into a burning kiln after being accused of desecrating the Quran.

Local police officials said a mob from neighboring villages formed Tuesday after a local mullah declared the couple were guilty of blasphemy.

The mob allegedly marched to the couple’s home, broke down their door, dragged them outside, beat them and threw them into the brick kiln where they both worked.

The attack happened in the town of Kot Radha Kishan, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) southwest of Lahore, the capital of Punjab. Police officials identified the woman as Shyman Bibi Urf Shamar, and her husband as Sajjad Nasir Zurjah Nazir Nasir.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), which dispatched a team to the scene, said in a statement that the couple had three young children — two sons and a daughter, and indicated the slain woman was pregnant.

The Senate flipped, John Boehner expanded his majority in the House and now Republicans want to show they can govern.

Before the election, top-level Republican aides and lawmakers described the strategy they hoped would let them notch some early victories before the presidential election season is in full swing in the second half of 2015 — a play by Boehner and other leaders to quickly shift away from crisis governing and toward a positive agenda.

At the top of the list is to get a funding bill passed to keep the government open through most of next year, freeing up the calendar to take on other issues like a GOP budget and a long-term highway bill.

Legislating won’t begin until after Thanksgiving. Both parties intend to spend the weeks immediately after election organizing for the new partisan makeup of Washington. Capitol Hill will burst back into action by Dec. 1, and that’s when serious lawmaking could break out.

Republicans are desperate to avoid fiscal fights in the first half of 2015, which is why they will try to use the first few weeks in December to pass a long-term spending bill to keep the government open through most of the next year. Funding runs dry Dec. 11, as does the authority for President Barack Obama’s administration to train and equip moderate Syrian rebels in their fight against the Islamic State. That provision could complicate the calculus for lawmakers’ hopes for a drama-free spending bill.

90-Year-Old Among First Charged Under Florida's Strict Rules Against Feeding Homeless

Abbott was charged Sunday along with two local pastors with violating the city’s new ordinance that effectively bans giving out food in public. He faces 60 days in jail and a $500 fine, and he intends to get cited again Wednesday night, when he sets out to feed some of the Florida city’s estimated 10,000 homeless on a public beach.

“I know that I will be arrested again, and I am prepared for that,” Abbott said by phone from his office at Love Thy Neighbor, Inc., a nonprofit he established in honor of his wife, Maureen, after her death in a car accident 23 years ago. “I am my brother’s keeper, and what they are doing is just heartless.”

Fort Lauderdale passed an ordinance late last month that included a slate of new regulations on where and how groups can provide food to homeless people. The vote made the city the 13th in the nation since 2012 to pass restrictions on where people can feed the homeless, according to a report by the National Coalition for the Homeless.

The regulations enacted in Fort Lauderdale state that no two indoor feeding sites can be within 500 feet of one another or on the same block; outdoor feeding programs require a permit or permission of the property owner and must provide portable toilets; and outdoor stations cannot be within 500 feet of residential properties.

Murder Suspect on Personal Jihad May Mave Been Groomed in US

Photo Credit: KCPQ-13A man accused of killing four people in two states is believed to have ties to a disrupted terrorist cell, a terrorist training camp on U.S. soil, and federal investigations going back more than a decade, a Fox News investigation has revealed.

Details of Ali Muhammad Brown’s life in crime and connections to radical Islam prior to the killings of a college student in New Jersey and three other men in Washington state since April 2014 is under renewed scrutiny. After his arrest in July, Brown, 29, told detectives from both states that he “was engaged in jihad” and referred to the specific murder of one victim, Brendan Tevlin, as a “just kill.”

Tevlin, 19, was murdered in West Orange, N.J., on June 25 while sitting in his car at a traffic light. He was shot eight times. Besides Brown, two other men have been arrested in Tevlin’s murder — Jeremy Villagran and Eric Williams.

Seattle authorities say ballistics link the same 9-mm. handgun that Brown used to kill Tevlin in New Jersey to three other homicide investigations in Washington state. On June 1, 23-year-old Dwone Anderson-Young and 27-year-old Ahmed Said were killed “execution style” as they sat inside a car in Seattle, Wash.

The same weapon was used to gun down 30-year-old Leroy Henderson on April 27 as he walked the streets of Skyway, Wash., authorities say.

Military Times Poll: Troops Fed Up with Politics

But he’s completely dissatisfied with the options on the ballot.

“I just feel like all politics goes back to money,” the 32-year-old soldier said. “It seems like all the [congressional] debate now is completely disconnected from reality. They don’t really seem to care about how their decisions impact us.”

He’s not alone in that opinion. Results of the most recent annual Military Times Poll of more than 2,200 active-duty troops show growing frustration with gridlocked congressional politics, mirroring low approval ratings for national lawmakers in recent polls.

More than one-third of readers who responded to the Military Times Poll said that neither Democrats nor Republicans have been a strong advocate for the military, and 44 percent think both major political parties have become less supportive of military issues in recent years.

Tennessee Voters Approve Amendment 1, Will Allow Pro-Life Laws to Stop Abortions

Photo Credit: LifeNewsTennessee voters have given the Volunteer State a chance to enact the kind of pro-life laws that have dropped abortions to historic lows in state after state across the nation.

They approved Amendment 1 to help ensure nothing int he state constitution could be used to secure an unlimited right to abortion. With 86%of the vote counter, Amendment 1 won with a 54-46 percent margin.

The amendment is necessary because the Tennessee Supreme Court ruled 4-1 in 2000 that the state constitution allows unlimited abortions. It is necessary, pro-life advocates say, to be able to pass laws to limit and reduce abortions. The ruling claimed the Tennessee Constitution contains a fundamental abortion right even broader than Roe v. Wade or the federal constitution and it resulted in the striking down of numerous pro-life Tennessee laws that were helping women and limiting abortions.
