Millions Of Millenials Live At Home and Support the Policies That Keep Them There

In Man’s Search For Meaning, Austrian psychiatrist, Holocaust survivor, and founder of logotherapy, Viktor Frankl discusses the “existential vacuum.” It is an internal emptiness and lack of purpose. In a life with logos or meaning, anything can be endured. Without it, a person is lost. Frankl watched men in the German camps succumb who might otherwise have survived simply because they had nothing to hold onto.

When the greatest excitement today for twenty-somethings are hybrid baked goods, a list of 37 random tokens of nostalgia, or going on an endless string of meaningless Internet-facilitated dates, I have found myself surrounded by nihilists.

Those who are married or finished medical school already may exempt themselves. Anyone with a legal partner or a life in service of others may wait until middle-age to experience the solitary struggle of a crisis of meaning. The lost ones instead are those approaching thirty with no savings, no interest in anything but the near-term future, and no profitable outlet for creativity besides solipsistic online forums.

The lost ones are smart. They pay attention to what goes on in the world. They read the news along with the lists of 37 GIFs. Yet what can they do? They have minimal discretionary income and their free time is spent unwinding from occupations that force them to look at backlit words for eight hours or deal with whining strangers. They are fully adults and can’t boast of anything their parents had at this age besides better means of communication, which many are horrible at maintaining.

I hear my peers say, “I’m lost.” I say, “Yes, of course.” Almost 22 million twenty-somethings live with their parents, myself for the second time currently included, though economists tell us that this is technically a “recovery” from a “recession” and not just one long, dragging depression of next-to-no growth for our country and for the development of individuals who thought for sure they could have had an apartment by now. I went to a party recently where someone was bashful to admit that he bought his own place. A room full of renters were ready to give him grief for having the means to pay a mortgage or the certitude and resolve to put down roots in one place.

Obama Skips the Kennedy Tax Cuts

After delivering a number of “economic growth” speeches this summer, President Obama has failed to inspire any confidence, falling all the way back to square one in a recent Gallup poll. Actually, make that less than square one. Gallup reported that Obama’s approval rating on the economy has sunk to 35 percent in August from 42 percent in early June.

Why should we be surprised?

The actual economy shows real GDP falling well below 2 percent. This so-called recovery remains the worst in modern history dating back to 1947.

And as far as solutions go, Obama keeps giving us the same old, same old: End the spending-cut sequester, lower tax deductions, and raise taxes on the rich, all to free up money for infrastructure, green energy, “manufacturing innovation initiatives,” and the teachers’ unions.

Of course, this would all come on top of Obamacare, which if it doesn’t fall of its own weight, will add so many new taxes and regulations that it will sink the economy even more.

39 Percent of Unemployed Workers Have Been Out of Work Longer than 27 Weeks

Of the 12.2 million Americans who were unemployed as of December 2012, 39 percent (4.7 million) had been out of work for 27 weeks or more, according to a new report from the Urban Institute.

These 4.7 million workers are known as the long-term unemployed, and are among the worst consequences of the Great Recession of 2008.

Report author Josh Mitchell noted that “relative to currently employed workers, the long-term unemployed tend to be less educated and are more likely to be nonwhite, unmarried, disabled, impoverished and to have worked previously in the construction industry and construction occupations.”

Man who Hacked Zuckerberg’s Facebook Account to Get Cash Reward … but not from Facebook

A man who hacked into Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook page to expose a software bug is getting donations from hackers around the world after the company declined to pay him under a program that normally rewards people who report flaws.

Khalil Shreateh discovered and reported the flaw but was initially dismissed by the company’s security team. He then posted a message on the billionaire’s wall to prove the bug’s existence.

Now, Marc Maiffret, chief technology officer of cybersecurity firm BeyondTrust, is trying to mobilize fellow hackers to raise a $10,000 reward for Shreateh after Facebook refused to compensate him.

Maiffret, a high school dropout and self-taught hacker, said Tuesday he has raised about $9,000 so far, including the $2,000 he initially contributed.

He and other hackers say Facebook unfairly denied Shreateh, a Palestinian, a payment under its “Bug Bounty” program. It doles out at least $500 to individuals who bring software bugs to the company’s attention.

Are you a Lark or a Night Owl? What your Sleep Habits Reveal About your Health

You’re up at the crack of dawn, raring to go, while your other half is dead to the world. Then, while you’re ready for lights out at 10pm, they’re happy to burn the midnight oil… and some.

Sounds familiar? It’s the difference between a lark and a night owl. And it won’t just affect your social life, for researchers are discovering these characteristics have implications for health, too.

This preference for morning or evening is known as your sleep chronotype, and it affects our waistline, fertility, pain levels and even cancer risk. It also affects personality — a study published last month found night owls are more likely to demonstrate dark personality traits including narcissism and deceitfulness.

Researchers from Sydney and Liverpool interviewed more than 200 people about their personalities and sleeping habits. They suggested the selfishness of night owls might be an evolutionary hangover, because such people are more likely to scheme and steal sexual partners from others, which is best done under cover of darkness.

Whether you have a morning or evening chronotype is dictated by your biological 24-hour clock, explains Dr Tim Quinnell, from the Sleep Laboratory at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge. This, in turn, is heavily influenced by genes.

The Missing Koch Report

In late September 2010, Iowa senator Chuck Grassley and six of his colleagues grew suspicious that a senior Obama administration official had improperly accessed the tax information of industrial behemoth Koch Industries. After Austan Goolsbee, then-chairman of the president’s Council of Economic Advisers, made an erroneous statement that implied direct knowledge of the company’s confidential tax status, the senators demanded that the Treasury Department inspector general for tax administration (TIGTA) investigate. Now, more than two years since the completion of that investigation, and despite repeated requests from Koch Industries and Senator Grassley himself, the results have yet to see the light of day.

Ironically, federal law is designed to keep that information from public view. Asked how taxpayers might discover whether their information has been accessed improperly, a spokeswoman for the House Ways and Means Committee tells National Review Online that, in most cases, “They won’t.”

In order for Koch Industries or the general public to see the TIGTA report, the IG’s office must refer the case to the Department of Justice for prosecution. If Justice declines to prosecute, all the relevant information remains under lock and key. Critics worry that a highly politicized Justice Department is unlikely to take up cases that have the potential to damage the Obama administration.

Koch Industries’ tax returns became the subject of controversy when, in an August 2010 briefing with reporters on a newly released tax-reform report, Goolsbee claimed that the company paid no corporate-income taxes. “We have a series of entities that do not pay corporate income tax,” he said, “some of which are really giant firms — you know, Koch Industries, I think, is one, is a multibillion-dollar business…”

Goolsbee’s assertion raised the eyebrows of a half-dozen GOP lawmakers, who subsequently called on Treasury Department inspector general J. Russell George to investigate whether Goolsbee had accessed the company’s tax returns in violation of federal law. In a letter to George, Grassley and his colleagues said they were “very concerned” by Goolsbee’s remarks. “The statement that Koch is a pass-through entity implies direct knowledge of Koch’s legal and tax status, which would appear to be a violation of section 6103,” they wrote, referring to the section of the Internal Revenue Code that protects the confidentiality of tax returns and all related information. George agreed to investigate.

Rescind AO 261 to Preserve Alaska’s Privacy

Janet Napolitano will soon be arriving at the University of California system office to take over the Presidency of the University of California System. What many Alaskans may not realize is that the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortia, that testing service that Alaska has joined for Common Core testing, is housed in the University of California system through the UCLA campus. As part of that agreement, Alaska’s Governor also agreed to comply with all data requests and provide them with access to Alaska’s P20 database. For those unaware of the governing document, it is in the document section of Stop Alaska Common Core.

Unlike most states, construction of Alaska’s P20 database occurred independently of the Common Core standards. P20 is an “ultra-secure” file type that will be in cloud storage that goes from Pre-Kindergarten to grade 20 and includes 400 data points. Due to the availability of a $4 million dollar grant, the state of Alaska applied for and received this grant to create a P20 database in 2011. It is maintained at the moment by the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education. The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (AK DEED) served as the fiscal agent on the grant, and the database will be used extensively in “evidence based” education according to Alaska’s 2013 waiver from the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

Thus, little Susie’s teacher will know Susie’s bus stop times, parent’s voting preferences, religious affiliation, gun ownership, and all sorts of other details essential to educating little Susie. As little Susie grows, her professors and future employers will have access to not so little Susie’s data too, as well as any other tidbits contributed by teachers and other school personnel along the way as Little Susie grows to be a woman.

In order to merge the data, Governor Parnell issued Administrative Order (AO 261) in December 2011. Now at the time, it may have seem like a good idea to remove the firewalls and integrate the Permanent Fund Data, Alaska Housing Finance Authority data, the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development data, and the University of Alaska data, and all other state agencies’ data into one large data set on the “unit” (or person) level. It may have sounded like a good idea at the time, and as someone trained as an econometrician, I get the “desire for data” to do research to make better public policy choices.

However, I don’t think it is such a good idea anymore. It is time for the Governor, and other Alaskans, to rethink this Administrative Order, and Alaska’s membership in the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium in light of recent developments.

First, let’s note that Janet Napolitano is not a big fan of civilians owning guns. Let’s also recognize that through the Smarter Balanced agreement, she will have access to Alaskan data at through the via Smarter Balanced Affiliation with the University of California. Let’s also recognize that Smarter
Balanced and the University of California system may do with this data whatever they wish under the new changes for privacy laws. This is unit level data on everyone in Alaska. Does anyone in this state really trust this dataset in the hands of Janet Napolitano?

Second, there is this strange little provision in ObamaCare that allows for home visits if a student scores poorly on tests. There are also other provisions like smoking, being a veteran, and some other variables that can trigger these visits, but poor test results is one that clearly triggers a home wellness visit through ObamaCare. These test scores will be part of the P20 database. Let’s not forget that this database includes the Permanent Fund Dividend data, so even if you do not have a child in school, you appear in the database. Have you ever signed to be able to pick up a niece or grandchild after school? Any adult associated with a child who performs poorly on a test could get a wellness visit.

Remember, the PFD data and the Alaska Housing Finance Data includes banking information, mailing address, physical address, and easily reveals the names of all family members through sponsorship.

The above is disconcerting. Why should the school needs data on people who do not have children in school?

We are heading into an era where our rights and privacy are in a precarious state of affairs with respect to the Federal Government. Governor Parnell says he is against ObamaCare and the Common Core. If this is true, then certainly he will see the wisdom of protecting Alaskans privacy by undertaking the following actions:

A) Rescind AO 261. Put the firewalls between the data sets back in place.

B) Withdraw Alaska from the Smarter Balanced Agreement immediately.

Obama Putting Constitutional Republic In Jeopardy (+video)

Former Florida Congressman Allen West blasts President Obama’s assertion that health insurance is every American’s right. He adds that the President’s selective enforcement of the law not only in implementing the provisions of Obamacare, but other laws according to his whim is a dangerous threat to the existence of America as a constitutional republic.

West points out ultimately our rights come from God and not government, a truth enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. If government is the source of our rights, it can grant and take them away at will.

West also discusses how problematic it is that Obamacare’s “navigators” will have full access to people’s medical background and financial information. He hits on many other interesting issues in this interview with Greta Van Susteren.

Public School Promotes Five Pillars of Islam

Parents at a Wichita, Kan. elementary school were shocked to discover a giant wall display inside the building promoting the five pillars of Islam.

The large exhibit was erected before the start of the school year as part of a religion component being taught at Minneha Core Knowledge Magnet School, a school district spokesperson told Fox News.

“The bulletin board that originally caused the concern does represent the 5 Pillars of Islam — in a historical context of their studies,” the spokesperson said.

The district said the photograph of the bulletin board is misleading because it is “without context.”

“There is also a painting of the Last Supper hanging in the school as part of the study of art and the Renaissance period,” the spokesperson said. “A photo take of a bulletin board without context is misleading, and some have taken it out of context without having all the information.”

Obama’s Iran-Contra: The Real Benghazi Scandal

One would be hard pressed to find a more significant impeachable offense than aiding and abetting the sworn enemies of the United States, especially when any such support includes sending weapons to our murderous adversaries. A crime on that scale would certainly be made all the more serious if those same enemies turned around and utilized the U.S.-provided arms to kill Americans.

We are not here referring to the so-called “Fast and Furious” scandal in which President Obama’s Justice Department purposely allowed, with deadly consequence, licensed firearms dealers to sell weapons to illegal straw buyers with the intent of tracking the guns to Mexican drug cartel leaders. Instead, we document a much less reported gun-walking scandal, one you will soon regard as the “Fast and Furious” of the Middle East, the Iran-Contra of the Obama administration. It could be the White House got away not once but twice with the same misdeed of arming our foes.

In the case presented here, the enemy consists not of drug lords but of al-Qaeda, along with a witches’ brew of anti-American jihadists. The results are not dead U.S. border agents but a murdered U.S. ambassador, along with three other diplomatic staff, in one of the most brazen assaults on an American overseas target in history. To make matters worse, we will show how our president and top administration officials deliberately and repeatedly lied to the American public while taking actions that fomented anti-American sentiment, aided an Islamist revolution currently sweeping the Middle East and North Africa, and possibly helped create, whether wittingly or not, a well-armed al-Qaeda army that is already attacking our interests and fueling conflicts worldwide.
