Chicago Mayor Blames Murder Rate on COVID-19

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot cited the coronavirus pandemic as a contributing factor to a recent spike in shootings in her city.

When asked by CNN’s Omar Jimenez why shootings were up 40 percent over last year and homicides up more than 30 percent, Lighfoot said: “All of these forces are coming together at the same time and making it very difficult. The ecosystem of public safety that isn’t just law enforcement but is local, community-based, they, too, have really been hit hard by COVID and are now just kind of coming back online and getting their footing.”

Shootings killed 18 people in Chicago in the last weekend in June, including two children and a teenager. Over the July Fourth weekend, more than 67 people were shot and at least 13 killed, including a 7-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy.

Lightfoot’s remarks echoed those of New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, who blamed an uptick in violence over the weekend on the coronavirus pandemic while defending the city’s police reforms and vowing to keep New York City “the safest big city in America.”

Shootings over the holiday weekend left at least eight dead and more than 44 people injured in the country’s largest city. (Read more from “Chicago Mayor Blames Murder Rate on COVID-19” HERE)

Former NYPD Commissioner: U.S. Jews in ‘Dangerous Place in History’

U.S. Jewry is in a “dangerous place in history,” former NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said in an interview, and he recommended that the heavy security measures in place for European synagogues be adopted by Jewish houses of worship in the U.S.

He warned that dark times lie ahead for U.S. Jewry — in New York in particular — especially in light of a loss of respect for police officers and massive budget cuts to the police force.

Kelly, who currently heads the Anti-Semitism Accountability Project (ASAP), said that Jewish communities need to be “much more aware about who is entering community premises.”

Kelly visited ten countries in Europe to explore how antisemitism was being manifested and in what ways it was combated.

“Antisemitism there is not new. Neo-Nazis have never gone away, and populism is helping them flex their muscles,” the Jerusalem Post cited Kelly as saying in an interview with Jewish educational group, Limmud FSU. Biden Press Secretary Accuses Trump of ‘Openly Embracing’ White Supremacist Causes

The national press secretary for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden believes President Trump is signaling support for white supremacists through his rhetoric on U.S. history.

Speaking on the Fox News Rundown podcast Thursday, Biden’s press secretary T.J. Ducklo accused Trump of embracing far-right viewpoints on the campaign trail.

“If you look at the Trump campaign and what they’re doing, you know they’re only speaking to their base,” Ducklo said. “They are alienating voters with divisive rhetoric, you know, Donald Trump is openly embracing the causes of white supremacists.”

“So look, I think that we are going to continue getting the vice president’s message out to voters, engaging with folks where they are, and doing the hard work to make sure that we can get our voters out and elect Joe Biden president in November,” he added. ‘No Place for God’: Left-Wing Protesters Turn Focus to Churches; Outrage Over Deafening Media Silence

By Washington Times. It would be quite a stretch to blame churches for George Floyd’s death, police brutality or Confederate memorials, yet houses of worship and religious statues are coming under attack in the protest mayhem.

Last weekend, at least four Catholic Church-affiliated buildings and statues from Boston to Los Angeles were set on fire or vandalized. A blaze that gutted the 249-year-old San Gabriel Mission, once led by Father Junipero Serra, is being investigated as possible arson.

“Given that there were four attacks on Catholic churches nationwide over a 48 hour period, from July 10 to July 12, suspicion, obviously, turns toward the left wing extremists who have been toppling statues of Saint Junipero Serra and attempting to remove a statue of Saint Louis,” Catholic Action League Executive Director C.J. Doyle said in an email.

The focus on church institutions also has bolstered the contentions of those who say the protests are no longer about Floyd or even defunding police, but rather a radical reordering of American society fundamentally at odds with the U.S. religious liberty tradition.

“These folks have an agenda, which is to fundamentally transform America,” said Ken Blackwell, a board member of the conservative American Civil Rights Union and a former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Human Rights Commission. “If you think about it, Black Lives Matter has an affiliation with the advancement of an ideology and program of action that is closely associated with the Marxist ideology, and it has no place for God.” (Read more from “‘No Place for God’: Left-Wing Protesters Turn Focus to Churches” HERE)

Outrage Over MSM’s Refusal to Cover Violence by Left-Wing Protesters Against Churches

By IrishCentral Staff. A series of arson and vandalism attacks have been sustained by Catholic Churches and their property across the United States over the last week. The Ancient Order of the Hibernians, the United States’ oldest Irish association, has questioned the “deafening media silence” over the attacks and whether the media “has double standards of newsworthiness when intolerance targets Catholics.”

Ocala, Florida: Anthony Shields (24) crashed his minivan into the church and set the building on fire while parishioners were inside preparing for Mass. Shields was later arrested and charged with attempted murder, arson, burglary, and evading arrest, after reportedly admitting to crashing into the church and then setting it on fire.

Los Angeles, California: Federal and local authorities are continuing to investigate the fire, on Saturday, that destroyed the roof of the San Gabriel Mission in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The Mission was being renovated as part of its 250-year anniversary celebrations.

Boston, Massachusetts: On Saturday, July 11, at about 10pm, police were called to the scene of an arson attack on the Blessed Virgin Mary outside the church of St. Peter’s Parish, on Bowdin Street in Dorchester. Plastic flowers in the hands of the statue had been set on fire and suffered damage.

Queens, New York: On July 10, the Diocese of Brooklyn announced that a statue of the Virgin Mary at Cathedral Prep School and Seminary in Queens. According to the Catholic Register, security footage shows “an individual approaching the 100-year-old statue shortly after 3 a.m. Friday morning and daubing the word “IDOL” down its length.”

Police Group Wants Mayor De Blasio to Allow ‘Blue Lives Matter’ Painted on NYC Street

By NBC News. In response to New York City’s Black Lives Matter murals — done as nods to the growing nationwide anti-racism movement — two police advocacy groups are asking Mayor Bill de Blasio for their chance to make a statement of their own.

The groups want to paint the words “Blue Lives Matter” on the street next to 1 Police Plaza in Lower Manhattan, a refrain used by those in the law enforcement community calling attention to the dangers police officers face each day on the job. They also suggested using the area at Broadway and West 45th Street in midtown as an alternative location.

Those groups, Blue Lives Matter NYC and Standing Up for NYC, wrote a letter to de Blasio, saluting him for supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and his attempts to bring awareness to systemic racism, while also hoping they can get a tribute of their own. . .

The mural would be paid for by the groups themselves, according to the statement, and they said they were counting on de Blasio’s “unbiased support” for the proposed project. (Read more from “Police Group Wants Mayor De Blasio to Allow ‘Blue Lives Matter’ Painted on NYC Street” HERE)

President Trump Replaces Campaign Manager

President Trump is replacing campaign manager Brad Parscale with veteran GOP operative Bill Stepien, as more and more polls show rival Joe Biden opening up a significant early lead in the race for the White House.

The move announced Wednesday night came days after an article in The Washington Post portrayed Parscale as self-promoting and aloof, noting that he featured prominently in an early Trump campaign ad — and that staffers complained he often took calls by his swimming pool at home.

“I am pleased to announce that Bill Stepien has been promoted to the role of Trump Campaign Manager,” Trump wrote on Facebook. “Brad Parscale, who has been with me for a very long time and has led our tremendous digital and data strategies, will remain in that role, while being a Senior Advisor to the campaign.”

Trump added: “Both were heavily involved in our historic 2016 win, and I look forward to having a big and very important second win together. This one should be a lot easier as our poll numbers are rising fast, the economy is getting better, vaccines and therapeutics will soon be on the way, and Americans want safe streets and communities!”

Two top campaign officials clarified to Fox News that “there are not two campaign mangers,” and that Stepien will have total executive control. (Read more from “President Trump Replaces Campaign Manager” HERE)

Democrats Boost Weaker Republican Candidate in Kansas Primary

The Democratic establishment is spending big money to meddle in the Republican Senate primary in Kansas, using a super PAC to run advertising boosting immigration hawk Kris Kobach over GOP establishment favorite, Rep. Roger Marshall.

The super PAC is controlled by Democratic operatives linked to their party’s leadership, and Republicans say the move amounts to dirty tricks intended to elevate weaker Kobach and manipulate the outcome of the Aug. 4 primary.

Sunflower State PAC is investing nearly $1 million to air a television advertisement that promotes Kobach as a stalwart conservative allied with President Trump and that undercuts Marshall as a flip-flopper at odds with the White House.

“Chuck Schumer and his allies have spent millions bailing out their candidates in Democratic primaries, and now, Schumer has zeroed in on his preferred candidate in the Kansas GOP primary,” Jesse Hunt, spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said, referring to the Senate minority leader. “Kansas primary voters can see right through the New York liberal’s desperate attempt to prop up a losing candidate.”

Kansas leans Republican, especially in presidential elections. (Read more from “Democrats Boost Weaker Republican Candidate in Kansas Primary” HERE)

Police Body-Cam Footage of George Floyd’s Arrest Released

Body-camera footage from two Minneapolis police officers involved in George Floyd’s deadly arrest were made public Wednesday, documenting the critical moments leading up to his death as he pleaded with officers to let him go.

“I’m not a bad guy!” Floyd said as he struggled with officers in the presence of onlookers. One bystander tells Floyd, “You can’t win.”

“I don’t want to win,” Floyd replies. . .

The footage shows the officers approaching Floyd outside a convenience store, where he was accused of trying to pass off a counterfeit $20 bill. When he didn’t display his hands, Lane pulls his weapon, causing Floyd to say he had been shot before.

Floyd is handcuffed but pleads with the officers not to put him in a squad car because of his claustrophobia. He winds up on the ground during a struggle while the officers attempt to hold him down. (Read more from “Police Body-Cam Footage of George Floyd’s Arrest Released” HERE)

Whoops: Progressive-Themed Beer Quickly Canceled for Offensive KKK Packaging

The beverage distributor World of Beer recently stocked a Democratic-themed beer dressed up in an old Democratic uniform, which scared Democrats. The questionable “Yellow Belly” beer was created by a pair of international breweries to “celebrate all things progressive.”

It was picked up by major craft brew distributor World of Beer, which quickly sent the Klan-clad brews across the country. According to the brewery, the intention was to bring awareness to institutional racism and the cowardice of the KKK. They named their beer “Yellow Belly,” which they define as “a person who is without courage, fortitude, or nerve; a coward.”

Exactly how this message is conveyed by a peanut butter biscuit stout wrapped in a KKK hood is unclear.

National Association of Police Organizations Ditches Biden, Endorses Trump for President

The National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) endorsed President Donald Trump for president on Wednesday, abandoning their previous support of former Vice President Joe Biden.

“Our endorsement recognizes your steadfast and very public support for our men and woman on the front lines, especially during this time of unfair and inaccurate opprobrium being directed at our members by so many,” the letter from NAPO President Michael McHale read.

NAPO previously endorsed the Obama-Biden presidential ticket in both 2008 and 2012 and did not endorse a candidate in 2016. . .

The letter cited the Justice Department under Trump for prosecuting individuals attacking police officers, signing the Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act, and support for the 9/11 first responders fund as more reasons for their support. North Carolina City Council Votes in Favor of Reparations for Black Residents

North Carolina’s Asheville City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to pass a repentant measure that formally apologizes to black residents and moves to issue reparations in the form of investments in certain areas of the community through the creation of the Community Reparations Commission.

The resolution, which passed 7-0, does not include cash payments made directly to black residents but does call on the city to form the Community Reparations Commission, which would hear from community leaders and groups who would, in turn, make recommendations on where funds should be directed.

“Hundreds of years of black blood spilled that basically fills the cup we drink from today,” Keith Young, a black member of the council, said.

“It is simply not enough to remove statutes. Black people in this country are dealing with issues that are systemic in nature,” he added.

The measure, titled “Resolution Supporting Community Reparations for Black Asheville,” cites a host of reasons for the resolution, including “racist practices in the private realty market,” “discriminatory wages,” “inadequate” health care, and policing.
