New Bill Would Empower Americans to Sue China for Coronavirus Outbreak; China’s Wuhan Raises Death Toll by 50%

By PJ Media. Americans will be able to take the Chinese Communist Party to court for its lies and omissions about the Chinese Wuhan coronavirus from the Middle Kingdom under a new bill proposed by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas). The bill would strike down immunity for foreign countries like China in the specific case of the coronavirus, enabling Americans to sue for damages in U.S. courts.

“By silencing doctors and journalists who tried to warn the world about the coronavirus, the Chinese Communist Party allowed the virus to spread quickly around the globe,” Cotton said in a statement on the legislation. “Their decision to cover up the virus led to thousands of needless deaths and untold economic harm. It’s only appropriate that we hold the Chinese government accountable for the damage it has caused.”

“We need to hold the Chinese government accountable for their malicious lies and coverup that allowed the coronavirus to spread across the world,” Crenshaw declared. “The communist regime expelled journalists, silenced whistleblowers, and withheld vital information that delayed the global response to the pandemic. Simply put: their actions cost American lives and livelihoods. This bill will help ensure China’s actions are not without consequences.”

The Senate bill, which is yet to be filed, is entitled, the “‘Holding the Chinese Communist Party Accountable for Infecting Americans Act of 2020.” The legislation has been modeled after the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, for which 97 senators voted in 2016. China’s Wuhan Raises Coronavirus Death Toll by 50% After City Revises Figures

By CNBC. Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in China, has revised upwards the number of confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths in the city after “a city-wide investigation,” state media reported.

The Wuhan government said total confirmed infections in the city have been revised to 50,333 as of Thursday, an increase of 325 cases, while the cumulative number of deaths is now 3,869 — 1,290 more than its previous count, according to CNBC’s translation of a Chinese language report by Xinhua News Agency.

Following the revision by Wuhan, China’s National Health Commission said Friday that the death toll in mainland China has been revised from 3,342 to 4,632. Meanwhile, total confirmed cases have been revised from 82,367 to 82,692, the NHC said.

Xinhua posted a notice from the Wuhan government, which listed four explanations for the discrepancy in the city’s data. (Read more from “China’s Wuhan Raises Coronavirus Death Toll by 50% After City Revises Figures” HERE)

Jail Time on Horizon for Rep. Omar? Will Pay Husband’s Firm $1 Million by Year End

Rep. Ilhan Omar is on track to pay the political firm founded by her new husband more than $1 million by the end of the year, campaign finance filings show.

In the first three months of this year, the Minnesota Democrat’s campaign paid the E Street Group $292,000 for advertising, fundraising, travel and other services, according to a federal campaign finance report filed Wednesday and obtained by the Star Tribune.

At that rate, the company would get $1.16 million from Omar’s campaign in 2020 — more than double the $523,000 it received for the whole of last year.

The firm was founded by Omar’s longtime consultant Tim Mynett, allegedly a former lover whom she married last month. The congresswoman announced their nuptials on Instagram. (Read more from “Jail Time on Horizon for Rep. Omar? Will Pay Husband’s Firm $1 Million by Year End” HERE)

One Governor Has Risen Above the Coronavirus Hysteria and Is Defending the Constitution

Republican South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem is one of a few state governors who have not yet placed citizens under a stay-at-home order in response to the current outbreak. Not only has she not placed the order, she has been outspoken in her contention that doing so would stand against everything America is supposed to stand for. She sees her decision as empowering individuals to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families.

She is also taking an aggressive position on the use of hydroxychloroquine in treating the virus, placing her ahead of many other state governors.

As a result, on Monday, Governor Noem received about the highest praise any good American could when she was attacked in the pages of the Washington Post. The Post used the occasion of an outbreak of the virus at South Dakota’s Smithfield Foods, a pork producer located in Sioux Falls, as an opportunity to attack the governor’s non-conformance. More than 300 workers at the facility have now tested positive for the Chinese coronavirus.

For anyone just learning of the story, that might give you pause to think that the governor should have locked down the state after all.

There are two problems with that conclusion. The first being South Dakota, a very rural state, has fewer than 1,000 reported cases of the virus (10th lowest in the nation), meaning the outbreak at Smithfield Foods accounts for nearly one-third of all statewide cases. The other problem, as was pointed out in The Federalist, is that since the pork plant is an “essential industry,” the workers would have been there even with a lockdown! Elon Musk Says He’s Surprised That ‘CNN Still Exists’ After Article Alleges He Didn’t Deliver Promised Ventilators

Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted he’s surprised that “CNN still exists” Thursday while disputing a report that claimed the California governor’s office had not received ventilators he promised to send.

Musk announced last month that he had obtained over 1,000 ventilators in an effort to help California hospitals amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office allegedly said they have yet to receive Musk’s ventilators, according to CNN’s report. . .

The Tesla CEO then tweeted at Newsom asking him to “fix this misunderstanding” and followed it up with receipts that appeared to prove he had, in fact, sent the ventilators over. The receipt shows email correspondence between Musk and Phillip Franks, LA County Health Services’ Director of System Operations and Support Services. . .

A follow-up email from Tesla’s Project Director Omead Afshar on March 30 indicates that the Tesla team asked if “these ventilators went into use.”

Musk also included a screenshot that appears to be from Mammoth Hospital, a general hospital in Mammoth Lakes, California. The email thanked Musk for the ventilators and was signed by CEO Tom Parker. Stock Market Takes a Sharp Upturn After Coronavirus Drug Shows Promising Results

By The Blaze. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped by more than 800 points in futures trading on Thursday after a report showed that a drug meant to treat coronavirus had promising results.

The Dow Jones has cratered after a historic drive upward after the coronavirus pandemic began to shut down economies all over the world.

Futures traded upward on the news that Remdesivir, a Gilead Sciences drug, was shown to be effective in treating coronavirus patients with severe symptoms in a trial at a Chicago hospital.

The stock market could have also been responding positively to the Trump administration revealing a plan by Dr. Deborah Birx to slowly ease the restrictions on economic activity. (Read more from “Stock Market Takes a Sharp Upturn After Coronavirus Drug Shows Promising Results” HERE)

Dow Futures Rally More Than 800 Points After Gilead Coronavirus Drug Reportedly Shows Effectiveness

By CNBC. U.S. stock futures surged after a report said a Gilead Sciences drug was showing effectiveness in treating the coronavirus. The move pointed to a jump for the stock market on Friday.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were up 845 points, implying a Friday opening gain of about 832 points. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures also pointed to gains for the two indexes at the Friday open.

Gilead shares jumped by 16.41% in after-hours trading after STAT news reported that a Chicago hospital treating coronavirus patients with Remdesivir in a trial were recovering rapidly from severe symptoms. The publication cited a video it obtained where the trial results were discussed.

“This is obviously good news. Of course, we’ve heard a few other pieces of good news like this recently and they didn’t pan-out as well as people had hoped,” said Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak, in an email. “The big question is whether it’s going to be enough to help the economy ‘re-open’ more quickly than people are thinking right now.” (Read more from “Dow Futures Rally More Than 800 Points After Gilead Coronavirus Drug Reportedly Shows Effectiveness” HERE)

Judge Denies Roger Stone’s Motion for a New Trial

Roger Stone will not get a new trial, a federal judge in Washington, D.C. ruled Thursday, months after the longtime GOP operative’s sentencing to more than three years in prison on Feb. 20.

Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who denied the veteran GOP political operative’s bid for a new trial based on alleged juror misconduct, wrote in her decision that “the conviction is final.”

Stone failed to “[supply] any reason to believe that there has been ‘a serious miscarriage of justice,” she wrote.

“The defendant has not shown that the juror lied; nor has he shown that the supposedly disqualifying evidence could not have been found through the exercise of due diligence at the time the jury was selected,” Jackson said.

With regard to Stone’s argument that the juror was biased because of comments made on social media, Berman said, “To the extent one could consider any of the social media posts to be inconsistent with the juror’s questionnaire, they do not warrant a new trial because they do not meet the legal test for something that has been ‘newly discovered.’” (Read more from “Judge Denies Roger Stone’s Motion for a New Trial” HERE)

Facebook Will Steer Users Who Interact With Coronavirus Misinformation to WHO

Facebook will begin to alert users after they’ve been exposed to misinformation about the coronavirus, the company announced Thursday, the latest in a series of actions to curtail the spread of wrong or misleading claims related to the pandemic.

Users who have liked, commented on or otherwise reacted to coronavirus misinformation that Facebook has flagged and removed as “harmful” will be directed to a website debunking coronavirus myths from the World Health Organization.

The announcement came in a blog post written by Guy Rosen, Facebook’s vice president of integrity.

“We want to connect people who may have interacted with harmful misinformation about the virus with the truth from authoritative sources in case they see or hear these claims again off of Facebook,” Rosen wrote.

The new alert will not identify the specific post containing harmful misinformation, according to a Facebook spokesperson, who said the company was relying on research that shows that repeated exposure — even in fact checks — can sometimes reinforce misinformed beliefs. Sheriffs Refuse to Enforce Democrat Governor’s Stay-Home Orders

After a massive citizen protest at the state capitol, several Michigan sheriffs announced they will not enforce some of Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive shelter-in-place orders, arguing they are bound by the Constitution.

Sheriffs Mike Borkovich, Ted Schendel, Ken Falk and Kim Cole promised to continue abiding by social distancing guidelines but contend Whitmer “has created a vague framework of emergency laws that only confuse Michigan citizens.”

“While we understand her desire to protect the public, we question some restrictions that she has imposed as overstepping her executive authority,” said the sheriff of Michigan’s 101st state House district, comprise of Leelanau, Benzie, Manistee and Mason Counties.

On Wednesday, while maintaining social distancing, thousands of Michigan residents gathered at their state capitol to protest Whitmer’s stringent orders, including barring people from traveling from house and house, even to vacation homes; shutting down certain sections of big-box stores; and banning some types of boats but not others. . .

“Each of us took an oath to uphold and defend the Michigan Constitution, as well as the U.S. Constitution, and to ensure that your God-given rights are not violated. We believe that we are the last line of defense in protecting your civil liberties.” (Read more from “Sheriffs Refuse to Enforce Democrat Governor’s Stay-Home Orders” HERE)

New Evidence that Coronavirus Started in Wuhan Lab; U.S. Government Aggressively Investigating

By Col. Lawrence Sellin (Ret.). Identifying the unique characteristics of CoVid-19, understanding the techniques that have been used to study coronaviruses and analyzing the scientific publications going back two decades or more will all be key in determining the origin of the Wuhan pandemic.

Since the 2002-2003 SARS coronavirus pandemic (SARS-CoV), which also originated in China, it has been known that human infectivity depends on the coronavirus’ capability to bind to a human lung cell receptor, in this case, angiotensin converting enzyme-2 (ACE2), a property that CoVid-19 also possesses.

In 2008, scientists at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, led by Zhengli Shi, demonstrated the importance of the human ACE2 binding capability by using bioengineering techniques to “splice” the receptor binding domain of SARS-CoV onto a non-human-infecting bat coronavirus, thereby creating the capability for the “new” virus to infect humans.

By 2013, a growing number of horseshoe bat coronaviruses, capable of binding to the human ACE2 receptor, were isolated by the Wuhan Institute of Virology under the direction of Zhengli Shi.

Given the possibility that CoVid-19 could be a naturally-occurring mutation within the bat population that “jumped” to humans, scientists world-wide have attempted to match CoVid-19’s genetic and amino acid sequence with coronaviruses found in nature.

Up until now, they have been unable to do so, but the nearest naturally-occurring relatives or “progenitors” of CoVid-19 have been suggested.

In the March 2020 scientific article “The proximal origin of SARS-CoV-2,” which has been widely cited both in the scientific literature and the mainstream media as evidence for CoVid-19 being a naturally-occurring coronavirus, the authors identified a number of close relatives to CoVid-19 and, from that, quickly concluded that CoVid-19 must occur in nature.

Yet, the authors cannot explain the presence of a unique amino acid sequence composed of Arginine-Arginine-Alanine-Arginine (RRAR), called a furin (polybasic) cleavage site that does not exist in any of the identified close relatives.

The minimum sequence for a furin cleavage site is R-X-X-R, where Arginine (R) occurs in the first and last positions and the middle two positions can be any amino acid, but activity of the furin cleavage site can be significantly enhanced with a basic amino acid like Arginine in the second position, as occurs in CoVid-19.

Furin cleavage sites have been found to be important factors contributing to the pathogenicity in human (MERS) coronavirus infections and in animals, like the bird infectious bronchitis Beaudette coronavirus strain, which has a furin cleavage site sequence of Arginine-Arginine-Lysine-Arginine, closely matching that of CoVid-19.

It is important to note that furin cleavage sites have been “introduced” into coronaviruses using widely-known genetic engineering techniques since, at least, 2006 in order to study the effect of cleavage to mediate cell-to-cell fusion and affect viral infectivity.

In the absence of conclusive evidence that CoVid-19 is naturally-occurring either within the bat population or as a Chinese laboratory isolate, it is postulated that CoVid-19 may have been manufactured as part of a research program and accidentally leaked from a high containment facility.

US Investigating “Man-made” in Wuhan Lab

By CNN. US intelligence and national security officials say the United States government is looking into the possibility that the novel coronavirus originated in a Chinese laboratory rather than a market, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter who caution it is premature to draw any conclusions.

The theory is one of multiple being pursued by investigators as they attempt to determine the origin of the coronavirus that has resulted in a pandemic and killed hundreds of thousands. The US does not believe the virus was associated with bioweapons research, and officials noted that the intelligence community is also exploring a range of other theories regarding the origination of the virus, as would typically be the case for high-profile incidents, according to an intelligence source. . .

An intelligence official familiar with the government analysis said a theory US intelligence officials are investigating is that the virus originated in a laboratory in Wuhan, China, and was accidentally released to the public. Other sources told CNN that US intelligence hasn’t been able to corroborate the theory but is trying to discern whether someone was infected in the lab through an accident or poor handling of materials and may have then infected others. Sources Believe Coronavirus Originated in Wuhan Lab as Part of China’s Efforts to Compete With U.S.

By Fox News. There is increasing confidence that COVID-19 likely originated in a Wuhan laboratory not as a bioweapon, but as part of China’s effort to demonstrate that its efforts to identify and combat viruses are equal to or greater than the capabilities of the United States, multiple sources who have been briefed on the details of early actions by China’s government and seen relevant materials tell Fox News.

This may be the “costliest government coverup of all time,” one of the sources said.

The sources believe the initial transmission of the virus was bat-to-human, and that “patient zero” worked at the laboratory, then went into the population in Wuhan.

The “increasing confidence” comes from classified and open-source documents and evidence, the sources said. Fox News has requested to see the evidence directly.

Asked by Fox News’ John Roberts about the reporting, President Trump remarked at Wednesday’s coronavirus press briefing, “More and more we’re hearing the story…we are doing a very thorough examination of this horrible situation.” (Read more from “Sources Believe Coronavirus Originated in Wuhan Lab as Part of China’s Efforts to Compete With U.S.” HERE)

California State Election Official Confirms Double-Voting by Mail in Super Tuesday Primary; Trump Lays Bare the Republicans’ Mail-In Voting Hypocrisy

By Breitbart. California Secretary of State Alex Padilla has confirmed that double-voting by mail took place in the March 3, 2020, Super Tuesday primary, Breitbart News has exclusively learned.

Days before Super Tuesday, citizen watchdog group Election Integrity Project California sent a letter to Padilla requesting his office look into possible double voting in the 2020 primary election.

More than a month later, in a letter dated April 7, 2020, Padilla confirmed double-voting in one case and suspected double-voting by a number of other registered voters on Super Tuesday, according to the letter obtained by Breitbart News.

Padilla confirmed in at least one case that two ballots from one voter were “opened and counted on election night.” Twelve of the 15 total registered voters identified with “duplicate voting history” are “suspected to have cast two ballots for the March primary election,” Padilla wrote in the letter.

In the remaining two cases, Padilla said county election officials “caught the duplicate voter records prior to election day and only one vote was tallied.” Padilla said the findings have been “forwarded to investigators to follow-up as necessary with the voters.” (Read more from “California State Election Official Confirms Double-Voting by Mail in Super Tuesday Primary” HERE)

Trump Lays Bare the Republicans’ Mail-In Voting Hypocrisy

By The Hill. Donald Trump warns that if voting is made easier for more people — especially some still frightened by the pandemic — “You’d never have a Republican elected in this country again.”

The president, who has been caught in thousands of lies, is saying what he really believes even if it’s hyperbole. This may be an example of a political gaffe, which Michael Kinsley described as when a politician tells “some obvious truth he isn’t supposed to say.”

This is an especially critical issue now, as parts of the country could be imperiled by the novel coronavirus’s second strike in November; the harbinger might be this month’s elections in Wisconsin, where there was a surge of absentee ballots — though in the confusion some were not counted, and others citizens were forced to choose between their health or in-person voting.

A major fight is brewing in Congress over whether to provide states with real resources to craft alternatives — more voting by mail, simplifying absentee voting, opening more and less crowded polling venues. This is fiercely opposed by Trump and Mitch McConnell as they see it helping lower income voters of color, students and citizens with disabilities.
