How Washington Politicians Wasted Billions Trying to ‘Invest in Our Future’

The federal government has wasted billions on energy projects promising to usher in a new energy future.

Why? Because revolutions don’t come from the government—they come from the people, and the same holds true for energy.

Despite many attempts to force it, the next energy revolution won’t come from Washington. All Washington can do is play favorites when picking energy options (think Solyndra).

It does this through providing grants, loans, loan guarantees, mandates (like the use of biofuels), and tax subsidies to specific energy technologies—to only name of a few.

Another way in which the government intervenes in the energy market is the annual budget of the Department of Energy. Programs within the Department of Energy supposedly recognize that there’s great potential for wind, solar, fusion, geothermal, biofuels, carbon capturing technology for coal, and much more. These energy sources and technologies themselves may very well be worthy of investment, but that’s not the point. The problem is the government meddling in what is clearly not its role.

The mantra from proponents of government spending on energy is generally the same. To borrow from President Barack Obama, “Rather than subsidize the past, we should invest in the future.”

Half of that statement is correct. Taxpayers shouldn’t subsidize the past. Nor should they “invest” (read: subsidize) in the future. In fact, that’s why the market has investors: to take chances, using their own money, on promising new endeavors. From basic research to full-scale commercialization for any energy technology, every step of the way should be driven by the private sector.

Free enterprise will spur the next energy revolution, just as it has the latest oil and gas revolution that’s lowering the cost of living for Americans. Competition will provide incremental improvements in energy, for conventional natural resources and for renewable technologies.

As energy prices rise and fall, markets respond accordingly. Higher prices at the pump, for instance, incentivize companies to extract more oil and invest in technologies to produce the oil more cheaply and efficiently. Higher prices encourage exploration into alternative power sources for vehicles, whether it is biofuels, batteries, natural gas, or something entirely different.

Markets shift to more efficient and cost-competitive technologies when they make economic sense and meet consumer preferences. In the 1800s, wood was the dominant energy source for families because it was abundant and convenient. Over time, coal replaced wood because it provided more heat per pound and was easier to store and to transport.

Furthermore, the evolution of rail power from steam to diesel occurred even faster because the transition significantly reduced costs and increased productivity. Though legislation encouraged the use of diesel locomotives on a small scale, the dramatic shift mostly happened because of market forces. The cost-effectiveness and increased productivity of diesel-powered trains largely eradicated the use of steam locomotives in just over two decades.

The reality is that Washington isn’t needed to drive energy innovation, which is a difficult pill to swallow for some politicians and special interests. Because those are the folks who want to keep the money flowing to their preferred energy sources because they stand to benefit.

It’s more difficult for politicians to take credit for the successes guided by the invisible hand. But the free market will actually trigger successful investments and reward disruptive technologies, providing more choice and better options for families.

On the surface, their reasons for government funding energy projects may sound appealing to the public. For years, policymakers stressed the need to develop alternative energy sources to reduce dependence on foreign energy sources. Lately, the justification for Department of Energy spending is that America needs to combat global warming, reduce greenhouse gas emission, and be a leader in green tech.

But intentions and results are two very different things. Decades of the federal government trying to commercialize specific energy technologies have left Americans with nothing more than empty promises and squandered money.

Instead of continuing to fund energy programs almost without hesitation, policymakers should trust that the market will determine the true value of potentially innovative technologies. We know what works and what doesn’t. It’s time for Congress to stop dumping money into failed programs and expecting different results. Instead, they should live by this mantra:

A penny saved is a penny earned and a taxpayer dollar spent on energy is a taxpayer dollar wasted.

Mitt Romney Makes It Clear Where He Stands on Clinton vs. Trump

As Americans prepare to choose their next president, Mitt Romney said Thursday neither of the likely major party nominees meets the standards he has set for giving his support.

Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee who in March declared himself part of the #NeverTrump movement in the GOP, made his comments at the American Friends of The Hebrew University dinner Thursday night.

“I don’t intend on supporting either of the major party candidates at this point,” Romney said. Donald Trump this week became the presumptive Republican nominee; Hillary Clinton is leading the race for the Democratic nod.

“I see way too much demagoguery and populism on both sides of the aisle, and I only hope and aspire that we’ll see more greatness,” he said.

Romney said he will not enter the presidential race as an independent, but he seemed to hold out hope someone else will . . .

“I think it happens to be an inflection point in our history as we go through this dramatic change economically and militarily, socially, all those things. … And I happen to think that the person who is leading the nation has an enormous and disproportionate impact on the course of the world, so I am dismayed at where we are now. I wish we had better choices, and I keep hoping that somehow things will get better, and I just don’t see an easy answer from where we are.” (Read more from “Mitt Romney Makes It Clear Where He Stands on Clinton vs. Trump” HERE)

Obama Itches for Trump Fight

President Obama can’t wait to take on Donald Trump.

Obama has been largely sidelined in the presidential contest, a last-year officeholder with high approval ratings who has repeatedly shown he likes to spar with political foes.

With Bernie Sanders continuing to slug it out with likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, Obama largely has to choose his openings to talk 2016.

So on Friday, when the White House announced Obama would make a statement about the economy, the president knew he’d get asked about Trump, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee . . .

“We are in serious times, and this is a really serious job,” Obama said. “This is not entertainment; this is not a reality show. This is a contest for the presidency of the United States.” (Read more from “Obama Itches for Trump Fight” HERE)

Army Shrinks to Smallest Level Since Before World War II

The Army’s latest headcount shows that nearly 2,600 soldiers departed active service in March without being replaced, an action that plunges manning to its lowest level since before World War II.

During the past year the size of the active force has been reduced by 16,548 soldiers, the rough equivalent of three brigades.

Endstrength for March was 479,172 soldiers, which is 154 fewer troopers than were on active duty when the Army halted the post-Cold War drawdown in 1999 with 479,424 soldiers, the smallest force since 1940, when the active component numbered 269,023 soldiers . . .

Without congressional or Defense Department intervention, the drawdown will continue for two more years, with endstrength hitting 460,000 soldiers in 2017, and 450,000 in 2018.

The latest official demographics from the Defense Manpower Data Center shows that in addition to the 479,172 soldiers who were on active duty April 1, the Army’s reserve forces totaled 548,024 soldiers, for a total force of 1,027,196 soldiers. Dr. Ben Carson’s Shocking Announcement on Trump’s Vice Presidential Pick

(Editor’s note: links to the other top stories are below) Ben Carson added more fuel to the fire of suspicion about Donald Trump’s conservative bona fides, when he suggested the presumptive GOP nominee’s running mate could be a Democrat.

Trump tapped Carson to head up a committee, which will make recommendations to the candidate who would best to fill the vice president slot.

Carson told the Wall Street Journal, in an interview published Thursday night, among those choices could be a Democrat.

Trump’s former GOP rival also took himself out of the running for the No. 2 spot saying, “I’m not interested in doing that for a number of reasons,” he said. “I don’t want to be a distraction. I’m sure you remember how crazy the media was about me, I don’t want to be a distraction, it’s too important a time in our life” . . . .

In an interview with Fox News host Bret Baier Thursday night, [Trump] added that he would prefer that person to have experience moving legislation through Congress, which would seem to eliminate most of the potential gubernatorial possibilities. He specifically stated South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is not under consideration and strongly suggested Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is not either.

Fox News digital politics editor Chris Stirewalt named someone who would check both the Democrat and congressional experience boxes: former Virginia Senator and presidential candidate Jim Webb. “I would say that the correct running mate for Donald Trump, and I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, is Jim Webb. Military experience. Democrat. Bi-partisan,” Stirewalt said on Fox Radio Wednesday. (Read more from “Ben Carson Just Made This Major Announcement About Trump’s Vice Presidential Pick” HERE)

Target Getting Slammed For Tranny Insanity

The Financial Consequences of Target’s New Bathroom Policy

Target shareholders are taking a financial hit following a major petition drive calling for a boycott of the company over the discount retailer’s controversial chain-wide inclusive policy directed at transgender individuals allowing them to use the bathroom or fitting room that matches their gender identity.

Critics fear Target’s policy is ripe for abuse since it would allow men to identify as a woman in order to gain access to the women’s bathrooms or fitting rooms.

Target’s stock price plummeted about 5 percent following the announcement of the company’s new policy while its competitor Walmart is down around 3.5 percent over the same period.

The nation’s second-largest retailer is feeling a huge backlash from the boycott organized by the American Family Association (AFA). To date, the petition that pledges individuals not to shop at the big box retailer has over a million signatures.

The boycott, announced on April 20, has brought national attention to Target’s controversial policy and the company is also feeling pushback in social media.

The boycott by a conservative group marks a new development in political advocacy. For years, progressive activists have successfully pressured corporations, including Target, on a range of policy issues and the boycott by AFA shows conservatives are also now willing to mount a serious effort to punish companies.

Target’s inclusive policy seems to have been designed to appease a 2010 boycott by the LGBT community over the company’s political donation to a group that was supporting Tom Emmer- a Republican Minnesota gubernatorial candidate who opposed gay marriage.

At that time, gay activist groups slammed Target in the media and in social media charging the company was anti-gay.

Following the encounter with progressive activist groups, Target has aggressively promoted LGBT issues under its corporate diversity program including a #TakePride hashtag and a video titled, “Target’s Pride Manifesto.”

At this point, Target is holding firm and refusing to back away from its policy emphasizing its goal of inclusion, “We certainly respect that there are a wide variety of perspectives and opinions. As a company that firmly stands behind what it means to offer our team an inclusive place to work — and our guests an inclusive place to shop — we continue to believe that this is the right thing for Target, ” said company spokesperson.

The AFA says its boycott is not about transgender individuals but is based on concerns that sexual predators will take advantage of the policy to assault young girls and women.

Appearing on Fox Business Network’s “Risk & Reward,” Abraham Hamilton from AFA told host Deirdre Bolton that the AFA boycott was focused on the risk from sexual predators and not any specific concerns with transgenders, saying “there’s no one here at the American Family Association who believes that the transgender community is synonymous with sexual predatory behavior.”

Hamilton continued, “But if we don’t understand the realities of the risk of sexual predatory behavior – because these predators will stop at nothing to ply their dastardly trade – and we believe that Target’s new policy positions them to be the new location for sexual predatory behavior.”

Speaking from his experience as trial prosecutor Hamilton added, “I’ve had the unfortunate experience of working through attempting to restore a family after the children have suffered sexual abuse and as you can imagine, it’s not a pretty sight.”

Target’s social statement policy may be negatively impacting shareholders.

Ed Butowsky, Managing Partner at Chapwood Investments LLC, believes part of the decline in Target’s stock is attributed to the boycott and the share price will suffer going forward because of Target’s policy, “it is obvious that this is going to hurt earnings for the company and by pursuing this policy they are putting future earnings at risk.”

Butowsky elaborated, “It’s quite obvious that the million signatures against the policy from your customer base will have a negative impact on traffic flow to your company.”

Finally, Butowsky added Target should focus on creating shareholder value and not destroy it by “taking stands on social issues.”

In most cases, companies respond to public pressure especially when shareholder value is at stake. If Target feels a financial impact from the boycott, expect to see a change in its inclusion policy. A Federal Judge Just Made a Jaw-Dropping Announcement About Hillary’s Future Regarding Her Email Scandal

A federal judge said Wednesday he may order Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton to testify under oath about whether she used a private email server as secretary of state to evade public records disclosures.

U.S. District Court Judge Emmet G. Sullivan signed an order granting a request from the conservative legal advocacy group Judicial Watch to question six current and former State Department staffers about the creation and purpose of the private email system. Those on the list were some of Clinton’s closest aides during her tenure as the nation’s top diplomat, including former chief of staff Cheryl D. Mills, deputy chief of staff Huma Abedin and undersecretary Patrick F. Kennedy.

Also set to testify is Bryan Pagliano, the agency employee who was tasked with setting up the clintonemail.com server located in the basement of the New York home Clinton shares with her husband, former President Bill Clinton. Pagliano has previously refused to testify before Congress, citing his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.

Based on what might be gleaned in those interviews, which are to be conducted over the next eight weeks, Sullivan says in his order a sworn deposition from Hillary Clinton “may be necessary.”

That raises the possibility that Clinton could be ordered to testify in the midst of the presidential race. A campaign spokesman did not respond Wednesday to messages about whether Clinton would oppose any order to testify. FORMER CIA ANALYST: Hillary Clinton’s Unencrypted Personal Email Server May Have Led to Benghazi Attack

There’s an important article over at Consortium News by longtime CIA analyst Ray McGovern, who prepared Presidential Daily Briefings for presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan, and which highlights an interesting point I hadn’t come across before.

Namely, that Hillary’s use of an insecure personal email server — that was almost certainly hacked by America’s enemies — could very well have exposed Ambassador Steven’s lack of security in his Benghazi compound, thereby leading directly to the terror attack that killed four Americans.

One very important, though as yet unmentioned, question is whether security lapses involving Clinton and her emails contributed to what Clinton has deemed her worst moment as Secretary of State, the killing of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other U.S. personnel at the lightly guarded U.S. “mission” (a very small, idiosyncratic, consulate-type complex not performing any consular affairs) in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, 2012.

Somehow the terrorists who mounted the assault were aware of the absence of meaningful security at the facility, though obviously there were other means for them to have made that determination, including the State Department’s reliance on unreliable local militias who might well have shared that inside information with the attackers.

However, if there is any indication that Clinton’s belatedly classified emails contained information about internal State Department discussions regarding the consulate’s security shortcomings, questions may be raised about whether that information was somehow compromised by a foreign intelligence agency and shared with the attackers.

We know that State Department bureaucrats under Secretary Clinton overruled repeated requests for additional security in Benghazi. We also know that Clinton disregarded NSA’s repeated warnings against the use of unencrypted communications…

One can only pray that the FBI exposes this crime family once and for all and terminates their political aspirations with extreme prejudice. (For more from the author of “FORMER CIA ANALYST: Hillary Clinton’s Unencrypted Personal Email Server May Have Led to Benghazi Attack” please click HERE)

Trump Makes Announcement About Ben Carson

Ben Carson, whose outsider candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination flared briefly in 2015 before limping to a conclusion this spring, will play a role in selecting presumptive GOP-nominee Donald Trump’s vice president.

Trump told the New York Times on Wednesday that he does not plan to pick a running mate until July and will have in place a collaborative process to select the right person. Trump also noted he would be looking for a vice president with a political background to “get things done” in Washington.

“I’ll set up a committee, and that I will do soon,” Trump said. “I think on the committee I’ll have Dr. Ben Carson and some other folks” . . .

Carson said the Trump campaign can win over African-American voters . . .

He also said the challenge of defeating likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton will unite Republicans.

“You would have thought that after 2012 we would have learned the lesson, but we didn’t,” Carson said. “But now we just have some bigger wounds that have to be healed, but I think that the healing balm — the sap, the ointment — will be Hillary Clinton. When people begin to think about her and what she represents and the progressive ideology and how it’s going to destroy our financial underpinnings and our position in the world and empower our enemies.” (Read more from “Trump Makes Announcement About Ben Carson” HERE)

Something Was Just Revealed About Every Single Reporter Covering the White House

Not a single member of the White House press corps is a registered Republican, according to survey results recently published by Politico.

Those results are buried in a story this week on President Barack Obama’s relationship with the press. An infographic posted in the story reveals that not a single one of the 72 members of the White House press corps surveyed by the Virginia-based trade publication identifies with the GOP.

Of the journalists surveyed, more than a quarter are registered Democrats and 13 percent are not members of any political party. Sixty percent are not registered to vote, but 72 percent of those polled said they think reporters should vote in elections they cover.

Twelve survey respondents said they plan to vote for Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton. Three said they support her rival Bernie Sanders. Two plan to vote for Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Tex.) and one supports Republican frontrunner Donald Trump.

Nearly 9 in 10 respondents said they expect Hillary Clinton to be the nation’s next president. (Read more from “Something Was Just Revealed About Every Single Reporter Covering the White House” HERE)
