Civil liberty advocates are jumping all over New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s order to “review” all of Donald Trump’s city contracts because of his recent comments on Mexican immigrants.
“This is not the American Way,” observed Alan Dershowitz, Harvard’s most distinguished civil liberties law professor, about the chilling effect de Blasio’s action could have on freedom of speech . . .
At his presidential campaign kickoff, Trump said immigrants from Mexico are “bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists, and some, I assume, are good people” . . .
“The city says, ‘We don’t want to renew it because we don’t like your speech.’ That would presumptively violate the First Amendment,” noted UCLA law professor Eugene Volokh in a DCNF interview. “The statement by the Mayor is a real danger to public debate,” he said, charging it would set dubious precedent for all city contractors, big and small.
The law professor, who also posts the “Volokh Conspiracy” blog on the Washington Post, explained that the First Amendment rights for government contractors were long ago resolved in the Umbehr case. In a 7 to 2 majority written by former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s, the court declared that the First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of speech shielded government contractors from facing the revocation of existing contracts due to things they said in public. The shunning of Trump is in response to his uh, memorable presidential announcement that included comments about the alleged criminality of Mexican immigrants that were typically crude. . .
Although this isn’t anything new. The companies fleeing from Trump were happy to be in bed with him so long as it suited their business interests. Now, they are acting on what has become one of the foremost principles of American public life: It’s no longer enough to be offended, you must punish the offender.
I was skeptical Trump was really running, but now that the boats are burned behind him, watch out. He’s set to be Herman Cain squared — an early-nominating-season phenomenon with a massive media megaphone.
As for his instantly notorious Mexico comments, they did more to insult than to illuminate, yet there was a kernel in them that hit on an important truth that typical politicians either don’t know or simply fear to speak. “When Mexico sends its people,” Trump said, “they’re not sending their best.”
We aren’t raiding the top 1 percent of Mexicans and importing them to this country. (Read more from “Trump Seems to Really Be Running and, by the Way, What He Said About Mexicans Wasn’t All Inaccurate” HERE)

By Eugene Scott. Washington (CNN)Businessman Donald Trump continued his verbal attack against illegal immigrants on Wednesday, in an exclusive interview set to air at 10 p.m. on CNN Tonight with Don Lemon.
He has stirred up controversy in recent days for claiming “rapists” and “killers” are migrating over the United States’ southern border. Univision and NBC Universal have cut ties with the businessman, refusing to air the “Miss Universe” pageant he partially owns as a result, and Macy’s announced Wednesday it was also discontinuing his clothing line.
On Wednesday, Trump, who is a Republican presidential candidate, told Lemon he was pulling his facts from a Fusion article.
“Well if you look at the statistics of people coming, you look at the statistics on rape, on crime, on everything coming in illegally into this country it’s mind-boggling!” he told Lemon, in a clip previewed on CNN’s “Situation Room.”
“If you go to Fusion, you will see a story: About 80% of the women coming in, you know who owns Fusion? Univision! Go to Fusion and pick up the stories on rape. It’s unbelievable when you look at what’s going on. So all I’m doing is telling the truth,” Trump said. (Read more from “Trump Defends Inflammatory Comments, Asks ‘Who Is Doing the Raping?'” HERE)
Macy’s Becomes Latest to Cut Ties With Donald Trump
By Nathan Layne. Department store Macy’s Inc said on Wednesday that it would end its business relationship with Donald Trump, becoming the latest company to sever ties with the real estate developer and TV personality after his comments insulting Mexicans.
Macy’s said it would phase-out Trump’s menswear collection, which includes shirts, ties, cufflinks and suits and have been sold by the department store since 2004.
“Macy’s is a company that stands for diversity and inclusion. We have no tolerance for discrimination in any form,” the company said in a statement. “In light of statements made by Donald Trump, which are inconsistent with Macy’s values, we have decided to discontinue our business relationship with Mr. Trump.”
Trump fired back, saying in a statement that it was his decision to end ties with Macy’s “because of the pressure being put on them by outside sources.” He added that he was not happy that his products were being made in China.
“While selling Trump ties and shirts at Macy’s is a small business in terms of dollar volume, my principles are far more important and therefore much more valuable,” the Trump Organization said. (Read more from “Macy’s Becomes Latest to Cut Ties With Donald Trump” HERE)
GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump says he thinks Hillary Clinton lost all credibility when she blamed him for the massacre at a church in South Carolina.
The 2016 Democratic presidential frontrunner hinted that the shooting at a church in Charleston, South Carolina is in some way connected to Donald Trump’s recent presidential announcement. Clinton told an interviewer:
Public discourse is sometimes hotter and more negative than it should be, which can, in my opinion, trigger someone who is less than stable. I think we have to speak out against it. Like, for example, a recent entry into the Republican presidential campaign said some very inflammatory things about Mexicans. Everybody should stand up and say that’s not acceptable.
Clinton was referring to Trump’s announcement speech, when he commented about the illegal aliens coming across the southern border from Mexico.
“They’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people,” Trump said in his announcement speech. Billionaire real estate magnate and celebrity Donald Trump has toyed with the idea of running for president since 2000, but this time he’s really taking the plunge. Sporting his famous comb-over, Trump announced he was joining the crowded GOP field this week from one of his skyscrapers, the 68-story Trump Tower in Manhattan. With a theme of “Make America Great Again,” his speech was, by turns, Reaganesque and full of Trump’s typical over-the-top statements. He declared if elected president, “I would build a great, great wall on our southern border and I will have Mexico pay for that wall.”
He said he would immediately repeal Obama’s executive orders on immigration and Obamacare. He emphasized job creation, and said no one would be tougher than him on ISIS: “Nobody will be pushing us around.” He said the current GOP field is made up of “clowns,” and that Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio have made “**sses of themselves.”
Trump, age 69, becomes the 12th Republican candidate in the race. He was born in New York to wealthy parents and graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in economics. He worked for his father’s real estate development firm, eventually replacing his father at the helm. He expanded the business and took on larger building projects, buying dilapidated structures and turning them around.
His best known buildings are his Trump towers, which are located around the country in several cities. He hasn’t always been successful; four of his over-leveraged hotel and casino businesses in Atlantic City have declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy. He has said about the bankruptcies, “It’s not personal. It’s just business.” His net worth in recent years has been estimated from $2.9 billion to $7 billion.
Trump hasn’t always been a Republican, and is still a bit of an odd fit due to his outlandish statements. In 1999, he left the GOP and joined New York’s Independence Party, the state’s version of the Reform Party. He explained, “I really believe the Republicans are just too crazy right.” In 2001, he registered as a Democrat for awhile. He contributes to the political campaigns of both Democrats and Republicans. He has explained his shifting back and forth, “I’m very much independent in that way. I go for the person, not necessarily the party. I mean, I vote for Republicans and I vote for Democrats.”
In recent years, Trump has warmed up to the Tea Party. He has populist views on immigration and bringing American jobs home. He has become pro-life and supports the Second Amendment. He says he still believes marriage is between a man and a woman, and has been strongly supportive of Israel. More than once Trump has called for Obama to resign, and even suggested impeaching him. In 2012, he gained notoriety for challenging Obama’s citizenship, and is partially credited with getting Obama to release a copy of his birth certificate.
Trump became an entertainment celebrity over the past decade as the producer and star of NBC’s reality shows The Apprentice and The Celebrity Apprentice, where he fires contestants who don’t make the cut. He will likely have to walk away from this while running for president. He owns the Miss USA pageant and its parent organization, Miss Universe. He owns several golf courses around the world. Trump is a Presbyterian, but admits he doesn’t make it to church regularly.
There is a perception that he is pompous and arrogant, known for statements like, “The beauty of me is that I’m very rich.” He has made plenty of outrageous statements over the years, sometimes directed at conservatives. He’s gotten into numerous highly publicized scrapes with other celebrities. The Washington Post says he “tweets like a 12 year old.”
After conservative author Charles Krauthammer said Trump deserves voters rating him the least-liked candidate in the race, Trump responded by calling Krauthammer a “dummy,” an “overrated clown,” and “one of the worst and most boring political pundits on television.” Trump said about Pat Buchanan on Meet the Press, “He’s a Hitler lover, I guess he’s an anti-Semite. He doesn’t like the blacks, he doesn’t like the gays.”
Trump has called both George W. Bush and Obama the worst presidents in history. In response to media criticism, he reportedly said, “You know, it really doesn’t matter what [the media] write as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of a**.”
Realistic chance or fantasy?
Trump has name recognition and money unmatched by any of the other candidates. He once accurately joked that his Gucci store in Manhattan is worth more than Mitt Romney’s net worth. He has built a political organization competitive with many of the other candidates, and is the only Republican candidate with campaign chairs in every county in New Hampshire. He skipped much of the primary activity in Iowa, since those caucuses generally end up going for more conservative candidates.
He appeals to many Americans because he’s such a non-politician. His background is business and entertainment; he has zero experience in public policy. He would bring enormous business success to running government. On the other hand, his lack of experience running government will be also viewed by some as a negative.
In 2011, a USA Today/Gallup poll listed Trump as among the ten most admired living men and women. Yet he also has very high unfavorability ratings, 71% according to a poll last month.
At the moment Trump is polling well enough to make it into the top tier debates. His presence may push candidates like Rick Perry and Carly Fiorina into the second tier, making them ineligible for the first major candidate forums being put on by Fox News and CNN.
If he makes it through the primary, he is too much of a wildcard to predict how he might match up against Hillary Clinton, the likely Democratic nominee. He has deep pockets and high name recognition, but it is hard to take him seriously when he says outlandish things so regularly. The presidential debates are cruel to candidates who make serious gaffes, as Rick Perry learned the hard way in 2012. That Trump may make his gaffes with a no-apologies, no-holds-barred verve may not matter to enough voters. Will Republican voters tell him, “You’re fired!” We’ll see. Billionaire Donald Trump continues to tease a potential presidential run.
Appearing on Fox News Wednesday evening, Trump reiterated he will announce in June what his intentions are in regards to 2016.
“I’m gearing up and we’ll see what happens,” Trump said on “The Kelly File.”
The “Apprentice” star said he wants to make America “great again.”
“I want to make the country great again,” he said. “This country is a hellhole. We are going down fast.” (Read more from “Donald Trump: This Country Is a Hell Hole” HERE)

By Alex Griswold. Potential 2016 Republican presidential candidate and attention-seeking businessman Donald Trump has donated at least $100,000 to the Clinton Foundation, despite his criticism of the foundation’s dealings.
During a New Hampshire campaign stop back in April, Trump railed against Hillary Clinton and the accusation that the former secretary of state traded political favors in favor for donations to the Clinton Foundation . . .
What Trump neglected to mention was his own donations to the foundation. Trump is listed on the Clinton Foundation’s donor page as having given somewhere between $100,001 and $250,000. Likewise, his wife Ivanka Trump is listed as having given somewhere between $5001 and $10,000. (Read more from “Trump Says He May Run but Donated at Least $100K to Clinton Foundation” HERE)
Trump Says He’s ‘Very Much Inclined’ to Run for President
By John DiStaso. Donald Trump, saying he is “very much inclined” to run for president, told about 300 Granite Staters at New England College on Monday afternoon that Hillary Clinton’s actions involving her family’s foundation are “criminal.”
Most in the audience at NEC’s Great Hall at the Simon Center were students. The real estate mogul held their attention for nearly an hour in the third of a four-stop visit. College officials said it was one the largest crowds ever for an event in the center.
Trump, who also visited Salem, Hudson and Concord on Monday, said Clinton “could go to jail for this.
“If this were Richard Nixon or a Republican,” he said, “if this were almost anybody, there would have been an investigation already” into allegations there is a connection between contributions to her family’s Clinton Foundation and actions she took as secretary of state. Photo Credit: Gage SkidmoreBy Robert Costa. This time, Donald J. Trump says, he really means it.
The billionaire real-estate mogul, who has long amounted to a one-man sideshow in GOP presidential politics, said in an interview Wednesday that he is “more serious” than ever about pursuing a run for the White House in 2016.
In recent days, Trump said, he has hired staffers in key primary states, retained an election attorney and delayed signing on for another season as host of NBC’s “The Celebrity Apprentice” because of his political projects.
“Everybody feels I’m doing this just to have fun or because it’s good for the brand,” Trump said in an interview with The Washington Post. “Well, it’s not fun. I’m not doing this for enjoyment. I’m doing this because the country is in serious trouble.”
The moves are the most significant steps yet by Trump, 68, toward a bona fide presidential bid, which he considered briefly and flamboyantly in 2011 before deciding against a run. (Read more about how Donald Trump says he is serious about a run HERE)
Reporter Mocks Scott Walker for Claiming to Communicate with God through Prayer
By Alex Griswold. Political Wire publisher Taegan Goddard caught a lot of flak on Twitter after mocking Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker for claiming he could discern God’s will, only to admit that he had no idea Christians believed they could communicate with God through prayer.
It all began with a rather snarky tweet about Walker’s comments that he was still waiting for “God’s calling” before he announced a presidential run.
Gov. Scott Walker’s office was unable to provide any transcripts of his conversations with God https://t.co/R8dcqhNpqR — Taegan Goddard (@politicalwire) February 24, 2015

By Mark Sappenfield. With all due respect, the Republican Party could probably do with a lot less of what was heard at the Iowa Freedom Summit Saturday.
On one hand, that might seem strange, considering that the Iowa Freedom Summit was all about getting America back to its “core principles of pro-growth economics, social conservatism, and a strong national defense,” according to the event website . . .
But then Donald Trump spoke.
He called Mitt Romney a “choker” for losing the 2012 presidential race to President Obama, and then said that Jeb Bush’s brother – former President George W. Bush – was the man who gave America Mr. Obama in the first place. (Read more about Trump at the Iowa Freedom Summit HERE)
Hilary Clinton Appears to be M.I.A While Other Possible 2016 Candidates Attend Iowa Freedom Summit
By Liz Kreutz. At a time when many potential 2016 presidential contenders appear to be starting the ignition of their campaigns, Hillary Clinton has pressed the brake pedal.
Or so it seems.
Clinton’s calendar, which was jam-packed throughout most of last year with paid speeches, award ceremonies, fundraisers, book tour stops, campaign appearances and official Clinton Foundation business, is now virtually empty.
Over the past six weeks, the likely Democratic presidential candidate has made just two public appearances -– both on the same day, and both in Canada. She doesn’t have another event scheduled until late next month . . .
Until then, Clinton appears to be lying low and staying out of the public eye. Meanwhile, much of the focus has turned toward potential Republican candidates like Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush and Rand Paul. A dozen others tested out their possible stump speeches at a summit in Iowa last weekend. (Read more from this story HERE)
Photo Credit: Daily CallerNews broke today that President Obama was rebuffed in his attempt to golf at several exclusive country clubs over the Labor Day weekend while he waited around for the wedding of an MSNBC host and his personal chef. (Must be nice to have that kind of downtime.)
The rejection wasn’t personal, it’s just that no one was willing to take the huge financial hit of clearing their tee time schedule of dues paying members to accommodate the president’s foursome. (The whole course has to be cleared for the president to play, for understandable security reasons.)
Since Labor Day weekend is a huge weekend for golf, no one was willing to anger people who give them money for a man who wants to take an ever-growing chunk of it.
