Trump and One GOP Senator Call for ‘Nuclear Option’ to Pass Wall Funding. But Jeff Flake and Others Will Stop It

The House of Representatives on Thursday passed a spending bill that will avert a government shutdown and pay $5.7 billion toward construction of a border wall after President Donald Trump declared he would not sign a bill that did not include wall funding. Now that this legislation moves to the Senate, where it will likely fail to meet the 60-vote threshold to overcome a filibuster, President Trump is calling on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to invoke the “nuclear option” and end the filibuster.

Trump’s demand was echoed by Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont.

Changing the rules of the United States Senate to end the filibuster will require a 51-vote majority agreeing to the changes. As it stands now, with 51 Republicans in the Senate, every single GOP senator would need to vote for the rule change to invoke the nuclear option.

At least three Republicans have publicly announced they will not vote for the nuclear option.

The nuclear option is not happening in the United States Senate. Fortunately, there are other ways to overcome a Democratic filibuster and pass wall funding, if McConnell is willing to have the fight. Jeff Flake Holds Judicial Nominees Hostage to Mueller Protection Bill, Forces GOP to Drop Confirmation Votes

By Daily Wire. The Senate Judiciary Committee has canceled hearings on a list of President Donald Trump’s judicial nominees after outgoing Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) pledged to vote against any Republican judicial nominee so long as the GOP refuses to pass a bill protecting Special Counsel Robert Mueller from any detrimental White House actions.

“The panel was scheduled to advance six Circuit Court nominees, 15 District Court nominees and several bipartisan bills on Thursday to prepare them for possible floor action over the next month,” Politico reported, noting that the nominees are all to key seats, and all could be easily pushed through both committee and the full Senate with full Republican support.

But Flake says he will not vote “yes” on a single nominee unless a “bipartisan” bill, which requires Mueller be fired by a senior administration official rather than by presidential tweet and would give Mueller an “expedited review” of his filing if he requested it, is brought to the floor.

On Wednesday, Flake and a Democratic colleague, Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE), tried to convince Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to bring the matter to the floor. When McConnell refused, Flake voted “no” on judge Thomas Farr’s nomination to the Federal district court.

Now the GOP has been forced to cancel a vote on at least 21 lifetime appointments, even though they control the Senate. Flake is currently the 51st vote of a 51-49 majority, which gives him the power to stall any close contests. In the case of Farr, Republicans had to call in Vice President Mike Pence to break a 50-50 tie. Senate Grapples With Consequences of Flake’s Vow to Block Trump Nominees

By Fox News. It’s not uncommon to discuss law in this space. After all, we report on Congress.

However, it’s rare that we discuss laws of physics here. In particular Newton’s Third Law of Motion: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Newton’s law details how force, introduced by friction, tension, gravity and magnetic fields trigger a polar and uniform reaction.

This week, the laws of physics can be fused with the laws of politics.

The Third Law of Congress dominated the United States Senate this week. The Third Law linked the investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller to the failed nomination of Thomas Farr to the federal bench. Levin Does Not Hold Back on ‘Liar’ and ‘Narcissist’ Jeff Flake

LevinTV host Mark Levin began his Monday evening radio show by looking at whether the claims against Judge Brett Kavanaugh are credible.

He offered praise to Rachel Mitchell, the Arizona prosecutor who was hired by Republicans to interview Christine Blasey Ford and Kavanaugh.

“Dr. Ford is not credible in the least when it comes to Brett Kavanaugh. Zero! Zero! Zero!” Levin continued. “Brett Kavanaugh … by every standard he’s an innocent man. And the disgusting media never disappoints. One slob after another.”

He tore into outgoing Sen. Jeff Flake for his constant capitulation.

“And this guy, Flake. See how he’s being celebrated now by the libs?” Levin asked. “This guy is a liar, he’s a narcissist, and I’m going to prove it to you later in the program. Stick with me.”

Leftist Group Claims Jeff Flake Is Suing Sexual Assault Survivors. But Here’s the Truth.

By The Blaze. Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake (R) twice rattled feathers Friday: Once when he announced he would vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, then again after he called for a week delay of Kavanaugh’s confirmation to allow for an FBI investigation of allegations of sexual misconduct.

But Flake went viral for a third, separate reason: When a sexual assault survivor confronted him as he entered an elevator.

“You’re telling all women that they don’t matter. Look at me when I’m talking to you!” the woman shouted as news cameras captured the encounter. “You’re telling me that my assault doesn’t matter.”

. . .

Elizabeth Jones, a Flake spokeswoman, said the Arizona lawmaker never considered pressing charges against the protesters.

“Sen. Flake is not pressing charges, nor did he ever consider pressing charges,” she said, according to USA Today. (Read more from “Leftist Group Claims Jeff Flake Is Suing Sexual Assault Survivors. but Here’s the Truth.” HERE)

Kavanaugh Sounded Like He Was ‘Wrongly Accused’ at Hearing, Flake Says

By Fox News. Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said Sunday that Brett Kavanaugh’s fiery opening statement at Thursday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing made him sound like a man who had been “wrongly accused” of sexual misconduct.

However, Flake also told CBS News’ “60 Minutes” that some of Kavanaugh’s exchanges with Democratic members of the committee were “a little too sharp.”

Flake was one of six members of the judiciary committee who appeared on “60 Minutes” Sunday, along with Sens. Chris Coons, D-Del.; Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii; Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I.; Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.; and John Kennedy, R-La. They spoke three days after Kavanaugh and one of his accusers, Christine Blasey Ford, gave conflicting accounts about Ford’s claim that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her during a party while they were in high school outside Washington D.C., in the early 1980s.

At one point, an emotional Kavanaugh called the confirmation process “a national disgrace” and said the furor had “destroyed my family and my good name.”

“When I heard him, I heard someone who I hope I would sound like, if I had been unjustly accused,” Flake said. “If I was unjustly accused, that’s how I would feel, as well.” (Read more from “Kavanaugh Sounded Like He Was ‘Wrongly Accused’ at Hearing, Flake Says” HERE)
