Holiday Travelers Stranded at JFK Airport as Winter Storm Triggers Hundreds of Flight Cancellations

Frustrated holiday travelers were left stranded at John F. Kennedy International Airport Friday night after hundreds of flights were canceled as a snowstorm slammed New York City and the tri-state area.

The wintery conditions sent post-Christmas travel plans at the Big Apple transit hub into a frenzy, leaving frazzled vacationers huddled on the floor with their families and luggage as they desperately waited for updates on rebooked flights that will take them home.

“I came to New York to have a ‘Home Alone’ Christmas just by myself,” Danniel Sermone, a 31-year-old who has been stuck at JFK since his Denver flight was axed Friday morning, told The Post.

“I wanted to hang out. I went shopping, and went to Times Square, crossed up there for a while with the big crowd. My next available flight is at 6 a.m. on the 28th. So I have been hanging out at JFK for about eight hours and still got like 30 left.”

More than half of the Empire State was placed under a state of emergency as forecasters warned that parts of the region would be walloped by nearly a foot of snow through Saturday afternoon. FAA Greenlights Plan to Allow Illegal Aliens to Be Housed at JFK Airport

This week, the Federal Aviation Administration signed off on plans to open an emergency relief shelter for illegal immigrants in an old postal warehouse at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

According to the New York Post, the FAA signed off on the Port Authority plans to open the shelter after local and state officials searched the city and surrounding areas for new places to house illegal immigrants coming from the southern border. According to the outlet, the area has seen more than 70,000 people arrive from South and Central America.

“The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey asked if an old postal warehouse near JFK Airport could be used for non-aviation purposes,” the FAA said in a statement. “The FAA found that the Port Authority had adequate security and safety plans in place.”

The Port Authority also confirmed the use of the airport building as a shelter for illegal immigrants in a statement. (Read more from “FAA Greenlights Plan to Allow Illegal Aliens to Be Housed at JFK Airport” HERE)

U.S. Citizen Was Reportedly Arrested at JFK Airport for Trying to Join the Taliban

Authorities reportedly arrested a man from the Bronx at John F. Kennedy International Airport for trying to fly to the Middle East to join the Taliban. . .

According to New York’s WNBC-TV, the FBI had been aware of the man and had been monitoring him “for some time” before his arrest. He is being investigated by the Joint Terrorism Task Force, according to the New York Post.

WPIX-TV reported the man was a 34-year-old U.S. citizen who had been born in Bangladesh. He had hoped to board Qatar Airlines flight 704, which was bound for Doha, Qatar. He never made it on the plane, which left Friday morning. . .

While the State Department designated the Taliban as a Foreign Terrorist Organization in 2010, it’s hold over large portions of Afghanistan has led the U.S. to seek to negotiate a peace deal between the group and the U.S.-backed Afghan government.

The U.S. attacked the Taliban after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, after it offered sanctuary to Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda. At the time, the Taliban controlled the entire country through a brutal and oppressive regime. Currently, the Taliban controls roughly half of all territory in Afghanistan.
