Lottery Winner Burns Through Nearly $50 Million Before Death

The winner of one of the largest EuroMIllions jackpots burned through most of his winnings before his death in 2019, new documents revealed.

Colin Weir from North Ayrshire, Scotland, won a record-breaking £161 million (roughly $257.6 million) in 2011, which still ranks as one of the largest jackpots handed out by the European lottery competition. Weir died in 2019 at the age of 71 from sepsis and “acute kidney injury,” but he had blown through most of his fortune by the time of his passing.

Weir’s initial £161 million winning, cut in half by his divorce to some £66 million (roughly $81 million) at the time, shrunk by a further £40 million (roughly $50 million) before his death, with the rest of his winnings going to his two children following a £1 million blowout for his family following his death.

One financial expert said Weir’s level of spending in eight years “takes a bit of doing,”according to Edinburgh Live.

Weir ended up spending an average of £100,000 (roughly $131,900 during that time) per week on luxury items and investments. (Read more from “Lottery Winner Burns Through Nearly $50 Million Before Death” HERE)

Winner of $10 Million Lottery Charged With Murder

A North Carolina man who won a $10 million lottery in 2017 has been charged with murder in the death of a woman who was found lifeless in a hotel room.

Michael Todd Hill, 52, of Leland, was arrested Tuesday after the body of 23-year-old Keonna Graham was discovered the day before.

Hill, who won his fortune from an Ultimate Millions scratch-off ticket in August 2017, checked into the hotel alone on Sunday, according to a local NBC affiliate. No one on staff saw Graham during his stay, he said.

A housekeeper discovered her body Monday when she went to clean the room after Hill’s scheduled checkout.

Graham worked as a correctional officer at a prison in Burgaw, North Carolina, and previously worked with mentally disabled people in a local rehabilitation center. She was remembered by a relative as a generous and adventurous woman who enjoyed hiking and riding bicycles. (Read more from “Winner of $10 Million Lottery Charged With Murder” HERE)

Lottery Winner Pleads Guilty to Bank Robbery

By CBS Local. A man who once won a $19 million lottery jackpot pleaded guilty Thursday to four federal counts of bank robbery, authorities said.

James Allen Hayes, 55, who was also known as James Killen and Ceaser Killen, was indicted last October in connection with bank heists in Newhall, Valencia and Santa Barbara counties. Authorities say he is believed to be the PT Cruiser Bandit and the Seasoned Bandit, so named by the FBI for his gray/white hair.

In each heist, the robber slipped a note to the teller demanding cash and threatening to shoot if they did not comply, according to the indictment.

As part of the plea deal, Hayes agreed to forfeit a light-colored Chrysler PT Cruiser, which was allegedly used in some of the robberies.

Hayes was indicted in October for a string of bank heists between April and September in the Pacific Palisades, Stevenson Ranch, Valencia, Newhall, Carpinteria, Goleta, and Santa Maria. (Read more from “Lottery Winner Pleads Guilty to Bank Robbery” HERE)
