Two Police Officers Killed, Two Others Hurt In California Shooting Spree

Photo Credit: Business InsiderTwo California sheriff’s deputies were killed and two others were wounded in a shooting spree that started in a motel parking lot in Sacramento on Friday, authorities said.

The two suspects, described on Twitter by the California Highway Patrol as a man and a woman, both Hispanic and heavily armed, were taken into custody, police said.

The incident began on Friday morning in the parking lot of a Motel 6 when a deputy, later identified as Danny Oliver, 47, approached a vehicle considered to be suspicious, said Sacramento County Sheriff Lieutenant R.L. Davis.

Someone inside the car fired multiple rounds at Oliver, who was struck in the chest. On Friday afternoon, Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones said that Oliver had died of his wounds at the University of California, Davis, Medical Center in Sacramento.

Michelle Obama Does it Again: Confuses Democratic Senate Candidate With Republican Rival

Photo Credit: APMichelle Obama made yet another flub on the campaign trail Thursday when she apparently confused Colorado Democratic Sen. Mark Udall with his Republican rival.

Obama spoke in Denver Thursday as part of a campaign event for Udall, who is engaged in a heated battle with his Republican opponent, Rep. Cory Gardner.

She touted Udall’s Senate record in her speech, and called him a “fifth-generation Coloradan.”

“Mark understands what makes this state special,” she said.

The only problem? Udall is not a fifth-generation Coloradan. In fact, he was born in Arizona and his father, former Rep. Mo Udall, served as a congressman from that state for decades.

Valerie Jarrett Key Player in Fast and Furious Cover-Up After Holder Lied to Congress

Photo Credit: Breitbart President Obama’s trusted senior advisor, Valerie Jarrett, was a key player in the effort to cover up that Attorney General Eric Holder lied to Congress about the Fast and Furious scandal, according to public records obtained by Judicial Watch.

The information is part of a Department of Justice (DOJ) “Vaughn index” detailing records about the gun-running operation known as Fast and Furious. JW had to sue the agency for the records after the Obama administration failed to provide them under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). A federal court ordered the DOJ to provide the records over the agency’s objections. Yesterday JW reported on the broad information in the records, including that Obama asserted executive privilege for Holder’s wife as part of the administration’s efforts to cover up the scandal.

Practically lost in the 1,000-plus pages of records is an index that shows Jarrett was brought in to manage the fact that Holder lied to Congress after the story about the disastrous gun-running operation broke in the media. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) ran the once-secret program that allowed guns from the U.S. to be smuggled into Mexico so they could eventually be traced to drug cartels. Instead, federal law enforcement officers lost track of hundreds of weapons which have been used in an unknown number of crimes, including the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Arizona.

In Emotional Speech, Putin Says Russia Will Not Tolerate U.S. Domination

Photo Credit: AP / RIA-Novosti, Mikhail Klimentyev, Presidential Press ServicePresident Vladimir Putin of Russia said Friday that the world is becoming an increasingly dangerous place because of U.S. attempts to enforce its will on other countries and that his nation will not comply.

In an emotional speech before international political experts, Putin unleashed scathing criticism of the United States for what he called its disregard of international law and unilateral use of force.

If the United State fails to abandon its “desire of eternal domination,” then “hopes for peaceful and stable development will be illusory, and today’s upheavals will herald the collapse of global world order,” Putin said during a meeting that lasted about three hours in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

His voice strained with anger, Putin accused the U.S. and its allies of trying to “tailor the world exclusively to their needs” since the end of the Cold War, using economic pressure and military force and often supporting extremist groups to achieve their goals.

He cited the wars in Iraq, Libya and Syria as examples of flawed moves that have led to chaos and left Washington and its allies “fighting against the results of their own policy.”

Silicon Valley Company Caught Paying Foreign Workers $1.21/HR After $200M Quarter

Photo Credit: APA Silicon Valley tech company that reportedly made $200 million last quarter was importing foreign workers from India and paying them $1.21 an hour.

According to the Labor Department, “about eight employees of Fremont-based Electronics For Imaging [EFI] were flown in from India and worked 120-hour weeks to help with the installation of computers at the company’s headquarters.” NBC Bay Area noted that “the employees were paid their regular hourly wage in Indian rupees, which translated to $1.21.”

EFI claimed it “unintentionally overlooked laws that require even foreign employees to be paid based on local US standards.” The company reportedly must pay “$40,000 in back wages to the employees” and was fined $3,500.

Future Abortion Doctor: “Seeing an Arm Being Pulled Through the Vaginal Canal Was Shocking”

Men and women who are considering providing abortions as a career must overcome their natural revulsion to witnessing violence. They must silence their consciences and prepare themselves to participate in the destruction of human life on a daily basis. If they cannot do this, they will not be able to perform abortions. Here are quotes from four people – two medical students, a doctor, and a would-be Planned Parenthood director, going through this process.

1.) A doctor who was trying to decide whether or not to perform abortions witnessed a second trimester procedure and described what she saw:

Seeing an arm being pulled through the vaginal canal was shocking. One of the nurses in the room escorted me out when the colour left my face… Not only was it a visceral shock; this was something I had to think deeply about…. It… cannot feel pain or think or have any sense of being, but the reality is, this cannot be called ‘tissue’. It was not something I could be comfortable with.

You can see how this doctor tries to rationalize what she’s seen by telling herself the baby didn’t feel pain while being dismembered. Yet she remains troubled. She decided to do only early abortions, ones in which the baby would not be fully formed or would be so delicate and small that it would be completely torn apart by the suction machine. Since these abortions leave no recognizable parts behind, this doctor could convince herself that abortion is only “removing tissue.”

2.) Sue Thayer worked for Planned Parenthood until being converted to the pro-life cause. Thayer was never enthusiastic about abortion, and the clinic where she worked did not perform them. But since a huge part of Planned Parenthood’s business is providing abortions, and Thayer would be expected to provide referrals to abortion clinics, her bosses told her to witness the procedures firsthand. They wanted to be absolutely sure that Thayer was okay with abortion before they hired her.

New York, New Jersey Set Up Mandatory Quarantine Requirement Amid Ebola Threat

Photo Credit: AP / Ross D. FranklinIn the wake of the first confirmed Ebola virus case in New York City, the states of New York and New Jersey have set up a new screening system that goes above and beyond the guidelines already set up by federal officials.

The guidelines have already been used for a traveler returning from West Africa who developed a fever Friday night.

And as CBS 2’s Alice Gainer reported, no other states have yet set up increased screening procedures for Ebola.

“We believe it’s appropriate to increase the current screening procedures from people coming from affected countries from the current (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention screening procedures),” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday afternoon. “We believe it within the State of New York and the State of New Jersey’s legal rights.”

By Kerry Sheridan.

Two American nurses were declared cured of Ebola on Friday, and one was healthy enough to leave the hospital and meet President Barack Obama for a hug.

The good news for the nurses, who contracted Ebola while caring for a Liberian patient in Texas, came as the city of New York was dealing with its first case of the deadly virus.

Nina Pham smiled often and appeared healthy, wearing a turquoise shirt and dark business suit, as she addressed reporters outside the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

“I feel fortunate and blessed to be standing here today,” Pham said.

“I am on my way back to recovery even as I reflect on how many others have not been so fortunate.”

Human Remains Recently Found are Those of Missing U.Va. Student Hannah Graham (+video)

Photo Credit: APThe state Medical Examiner’s office confirmed Friday that human remains discovered in rural Albemarle County on Oct. 18 were those of missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham, 18, of Fairfax County.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Graham family & Hannah’s friends during this incredibly difficult time,” Albermarle County Police said in a statement announcing the findings, which officially ended a search by thousands that took weeks and left the campus and community on edge.

Graham’s parents asked for privacy as they grieved for the loss of their daughter.

“Although we have lost our precious Hannah, the light she radiated can never be extinguished,” parents John and Sue Graham said. “We will hold it in our hearts forever and it will help sustain us as we face a painful future without her.”

Hannah Graham disappeared early Sept. 13 after a night out with friends that she met at a restaurant for dinner before stopping by two off-campus parties. She left the second party alone and eventually texted a friend saying she was lost, authorities indicated.

Man Attacks NYPD Officers with Hatchet (+video)

A Facebook page of man who gruesomely attacked New York police officers with a hatchet Thursday features a profile photo of a heavily-armed man and an image of Islamic prayers, although officials have not confirmed links to extremist documents or jihadi groups at this time.

NBC News, citing law enforcement sources, reported the Facebook page belongs to Zale Thompson, a 32-year-old resident of Queens. The report describes the profile picture of his Facebook page as appearing to be “a Muslim warrior.”

Photo Credit: SuppliedNew York axe attack: Man dead, two police officers injured

By news.com.au

A MAN wielding an axe has turned a busy New York street corner into a scene of bloody chaos, chopping one cop in the back of the head and slicing a second cop in the arm before two other officers shot him dead on the spot.

Officer Kenneth Healy, 25, had just five months on the job when madman Zale Thompson, 32, of Queens — a “scholarly” but “weird” recent convert to Islam — fractured the back of his skull with one swing of a small, blue-handled hatchet around 2 p.m.

A 29-year-old woman walking a half-block away from the madness was struck in her back by a stray police bullet and was in stable condition, according to police sources.

The NYPD is investigating whether Islamic extremism played any role in the seemingly random attack, which left the rookie in serious but stable condition Thursday night.

“There’s nothing we know at this time that would indicate that [Islamic terrorism] is the case,” Police Commissioner William Bratton said at a press conference at Jamaica Hospital Thursday night.

FBI warns media: Journalists ‘desirable targets’ for ISIL

By DYLAN BYERS.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation sent a bulletin to reporters on Thursday warning that the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant had identified reporters and media personalities as “desirable targets” for retribution attacks against the United States.

“The FBI assesses, based on open source statements and postings, that [ISIL] members and supporters view members of the US media establishment as legitimate targets for retribution attacks as the US-led air campaign against ISIL in Iraq and Syria continues,” the FBI bulletin states. “Online supporters of ISIL have called—via various social media sites—for retaliation against the United States and US interests abroad, especially since US-led air strikes in Iraq and Syria began.”

In the bulletin, the FBI claims to have “recently obtained credible information indicating members of an ISIL-affiliated group are tasked with kidnapping journalists in the region and returning them to Syria. Members of this group might try to mask their affiliation with ISIL to gain access to journalists,” the bulletin reads.

Doctor at New York City Hospital Tests Positive for Ebola

Photo Credit: Joshua Bright for The New York Times.Doctor in New York City Is Sick With Ebola

By MARC SANTORA.

A doctor in New York City who recently returned from treating Ebola patients in Guinea became the first person in the city to test positive for the virus Thursday, setting off a search for anyone who might have come into contact with him.

The doctor, Craig Spencer, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital Center and placed in isolation at the same time as investigators sought to retrace every step he had taken over the past several days.

At least three people he had contact with in recent days have been placed in isolation. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which dispatched a team to New York, is conducting its own test to confirm the positive test on Thursday, which was performed by a city lab.

While officials have said they expected isolated cases of the disease to arrive in New York eventually, and had been preparing for this moment for months, the first case highlighted the challenges involved in containing the virus, especially in a crowded metropolis. Dr. Spencer, 33, had traveled on the A and L subway lines Wednesday night, visited a bowling alley in Williamsburg, and then took a taxi back to Manhattan.

Photo Credit: Alessandro Della Valle / EPASome US hospitals weigh withholding care to Ebola patients

By Reuters.

The Ebola crisis is forcing the American healthcare system to consider the previously unthinkable: withholding some medical interventions because they are too dangerous to doctors and nurses and unlikely to help a patient.

US hospitals have over the years come under criticism for undertaking measures that prolong dying rather than improve patients’ quality of life.

But the care of the first Ebola patient diagnosed in the United States, who received dialysis and intubation and infected two nurses caring for him, is spurring hospitals and medical associations to develop the first guidelines for what can reasonably be done and what should be withheld.

Officials from at least three hospital systems interviewed by Reuters said they were considering whether to withhold individual procedures or leave it up to individual doctors to determine whether an intervention would be performed.

Ethics experts say they are also fielding more calls from doctors asking what their professional obligations are to patients if healthcare workers could be at risk.

Experts Predict ‘Catastrophic’ Ebola Epidemic in West Africa If Aid Delayed

By HealthDay News.

A large influx of international aid is needed, and soon, if West Africa is to avoid tens of thousands of deaths from the widening Ebola crisis, a team of Yale University researchers predict.

Using a specially designed mathematical model, the researchers looked at the possible future of the outbreak in just one densely populated county of hard-hit Liberia — Montserrado County, home to the capital city of Monrovia.

The researchers said that if international aid isn’t delivered to Liberia in sufficient time and quantity, by Dec. 15 Montserrado County will have more than 170,000 cases of Ebola — 12 percent of its population — and more than 90,000 deaths.

However, if the international community ramps up efforts by Oct. 31, almost 98,000 of those cases could be avoided.

“Our predictions highlight the rapidly closing window of opportunity for controlling the outbreak and averting a catastrophic toll of new Ebola cases and deaths in the coming months,” study senior author Alison Galvani, professor of epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health, said in a university news release.

By CARI ROMM.

Less than a week after two west African countries successfully rid themselves of Ebola, another has announced its first case of the disease. In a television address on Thursday, Mali’s health minister, Ousmane Kone, revealed that a two-year-old girl has tested positive for the virus.

The girl was hospitalized yesterday in Kayes, a town in western Mali. A health official told Reuters that relatives brought her into the country from neighboring Guinea, where the outbreak began, after her mother died of the disease a few weeks ago.

Kone said that the girl is improving, Reuters reported, and that those who had direct contact with her are currently being monitored for signs of the disease.
