House Report Flawed? GOP Lawmakers, Benghazi Survivors Fume

A recent report by a GOP-led committee that was seen as going easy on the Obama administration’s Benghazi response is drawing stinging complaints from a number of Republicans on the panel, as well as survivors of the attack.

Some GOP members on the House Intelligence Committee grumble that the final product “might as well have been written by the minority,” while other House Republicans say they are frustrated with the committee’s decision to release a report with so many “holes.”

Several lawmakers point their fingers at the committee’s chairman, Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich. Some members who disagreed with the findings said they stopped going to meetings because of concerns with his handling of the report, and didn’t even take part in the final version.

The report, released last month, found no intelligence lapses in connection with the fatal terror attack. Republican heavyweights like Sen. Lindsey Graham have blasted the findings as “garbage.”

But the findings also drew complaints from survivors, who testified behind closed doors, and caused deep divisions on the committee itself ahead of the report’s release. Critical lawmakers wished to remain anonymous due to fear of blowback from Republican leadership.

Anchorage Cathedral Vandalized

The historic Holy Family Cathedral in Anchorage was vandalized on Dec. 2. The Dominican priests who staff the parish found it damaged and in disarray at about 4:30 p.m.

A video of the damage taken by Dominican Father Mark Francis Manzano shows overturned pews, spilt holy water, toppled liturgical furniture, including the archbishop’s presider’s chair and debris scattered throughout the sanctuary. Advent candles and the ambo were also thrown to the floor and a microphone connected to the sound system was ripped out.

On his Facebook page Father Manzano noted that while the damage was considerable, “it could have been much worse.”

“By the grace of God, the tabernacle, the relics, and the ambry were all secured and left untouched,” he observed.

The cathedral will mark its 100th year anniversary next year. It was the first church built in Anchorage and remains a historic landmark, even hosting Pope John Paul II during his 1981 visit to Anchorage.

Father Manzano noted that as the cathedral church for the Anchorage Archdiocese, the downtown parish tries to “intentionally keep our doors open from an hour before the morning Mass until the conclusion of Vespers in the evening.”

“Now we are rethinking our schedule,” he posted. “We are rethinking lots of things now since this is the second vandalism event within one week of each other.”

A week prior vandals damaged one of the priests’ cars, busting a back window. Over the last few years the cathedral has been targeted by vandals who have damaged outdoor statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary as well as a number of saint statues.

In the most recent incident the tabernacle was undamaged and that the Blessed Sacrament was not violated but the altar was stripped.

Police are investigating the incident.

We Are Never Going to Run Out of Oil

Mideast Bahrain Oil PricesIn a chilling 2010 column, Paul Krugman declared: “peak oil has arrived.”

So it’s really not surprising that the national average for a gallon of gas has fallen to $2.77 this week – in 10 states it was under $2.60 – and analysts predict we’re going to dip below the two-dollar mark soon. U.S. oil is down to $75 a barrel, a drop of more than $30 from the 52-week high.

Meanwhile, the Institute for Energy Research estimates that we have enough natural gas in the U.S. to meet electricity needs for around 575 years at current fuel demand and to fuel homes heated by natural gas for 857 years or so – because we have more gas than Russia, Iran, Qatar and Saudi Arabia combined.

With prices returning to ordinary levels and a few centuries’ worth of fossil fuels on tap, this is a good time to remind ourselves that nearly every warning the left has peddled about an impending energy crisis over the past 30 to 40 years has turned out to be wrong. And none of them are more wrong than the Malthusian idea that says we’re running out of oil.

Each time there’s a temporary spike in gas prices, science-centric liberals allow themselves a purely ideological indulgence, claiming – as Krugman, Paul Ehrlich, John Holdren and countless others have – that we’re rapidly approaching a point when producers will hit the maximum rate of extraction of petroleum. Peak oil. With emerging demand, fossil fuels will become prohibitive. And unless we have our in solar panels in order, Armageddon is near.

This year has not only been one of the coldest in Chicago, it is also one of the few places on the entire planet that was colder than average this year.

In fact, none of us have never experienced a year as cold as 2014.

The last time the average annual year-to-date temperature was this cold was back in 1904.

According to the Gerontology research group, there is nobody from Illinois born before 1904 that is still living. Nationwide, there are 18 people older than 110 years old.

WATCH: Lawmakers Make 'Hands Up' Gesture on House Floor

handsupSeveral lawmakers took to the House floor Monday evening to make the “Hands up, don’t shoot,” gesture to protest the police shooting of the unarmed Ferguson teen, Michael Brown.

“Hands up, don’t shoot. It’s a rallying cry of people all across America who are fed up with police violence,” Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said as he took the floor. “In community, after community, after community, fed up with police violence in Ferguson, in Brooklyn, in Cleveland, in Oakland, in cities and counties and rural communities all across America.”

Jeffries added that people are fed up with injustice, a broken criminal justice system and “continuing to see young, unarmed African-American men killed as a result of a gunshot fired by a law enforcement officer.”

Michael Brown’s Stepdad Investigated Over Angry Comments

By Associated Press.

Police are investigating Michael Brown’s stepfather for angry comments on the streets of Ferguson after a grand jury decided not to indict the police officer who fatally shot his stepson, a spokesman said Tuesday.

Officials are looking into Louis Head’s comments as part of a broader investigation into the arson, vandalism and looting that followed the Nov. 24 grand jury announcement, St. Louis County Police spokesman Brian Schellman said. Twelve commercial buildings were destroyed by fire.

Brown, 18, who was black and unarmed, was killed Aug. 9 by Darren Wilson, who is white. Wilson, who resigned from the Ferguson department last weekend, had told the grand jury his life was being threatened, but some witnesses said Brown was trying to surrender.

Video widely circulated after last week’s grand jury announcement shows Brown’s mother, Lesley McSpadden, on top of a car and breaking down as the decision blares over a stereo. Head, her husband, comforts her then yells angry comments, including “Burn this bitch down!”

Family attorney Benjamin Crump has called the reaction “raw emotion,” but “completely inappropriate.” He did not immediately return messages seeking comment Tuesday.

Eyewitness: Before St. Louis Hammer Attack, ‘Black People’ Ran Up And Down Street Yelling, ‘Kill The White People’

By Debra Heine.

A video provided to St. Louis blogger Bob McCarty of the crime scene at the South St. Louis Bevo Mill neighborhood where a group of black teenagers bludgeoned Bosnian immigrant Zemir Begic to death with hammers, strongly suggests the motive for the attack – retaliation for the Michael Brown shooting.

Common Core Includes Collecting Psych Data on Kids

A little-known aspect of Common Core should have students worried about what goes on the dreaded “permanent record,” say critics of the national education standard.

Parents in Pennsylvania have written outgoing Gov. Tom Corbett to demand a moratorium on the collection of what they describe as sensitive and personal information on students, which they say is part of a federal database to track the development of every child. And education activists around the nation say it is part and parcel of the controversial campaign to impose a uniform, national standard for math and English.

“This follows them from the cradle to the grave,” said Tracy Ramey, of Pennsylvanians against Common Core. Her group, along with Pennsylvanians Restoring Education, recently wrote Corbett to demand the shutdown of the state’s Pennsylvania Information Management System (PIMS) in all 500 school districts.

“What’s alarming is what they are doing with the data,” Ramey said.

The process, set to play out throughout the country in what critics call a “womb to workplace” information system, was originally developed by the Department of Labor and contains information on every U.S. citizen under the age of 26. Most of the information on individuals is collected while K-12 students are in school, and includes names, grades and information such as personality traits, behavior patterns and even fingerprints. The state of Pennsylvania was one of the early adopters of the data mining and contributed to the framework for a nationwide program.

House GOP Is On the Verge Of Breaking 2014 Campaign Promises

By Joel Gehrke.

Senator Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.) suggested that House Republicans are on the verge of breaking their campaign promise to fight President Obama’s administrative amnesty, judging by the legislative text currently being circulated.

Sessions said that the proposed language “fails to meet [the] test” established by Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus, who promised earlier this year that the GOP would do everything possible to thwart Obama’s executive orders.

“The executive amnesty language is substantially weaker than the language the House adopted this summer, and does not reject the central tenets of the President’s plan: work permits, Social Security and Medicare to 5 million illegal immigrants — reducing wages, jobs and benefits for Americans,” Sessions said in the statement expressing his dissatisfaction with the results of a House Republican conference meeting today.

In the meeting, “the lawmakers began coalescing around a two-part plan that would allow a symbolic vote to show their frustration with President Obama’s executive action on immigration, before funding the government ahead of a Dec. 11 deadline,” according to the New York Times.

Black Lives Matter, So It’s Time to Outlaw Abortion

black-lives-matter-620x330I’ve been hearing quite a bit about this alleged war being carried out against black people. I’ve been told from numerous sources that the killing of Michael Brown is but another piece of evidence that, in the words of someone on my Facebook page, blacks are ‘hunted’ in this country.

Black people are under attack, we’re informed. Cops, especially, are roaming the streets executing innocent black men in cold blood, for no reason, and without ever being held accountable for it.

And then out come the statistics: A black person is killed by a cop every day. A black man is 20 times more likely to be shot by a police officer. Law enforcement is responsible for more black deaths than sharks and lightening combined. And so on.

Unfortunately, these numbers don’t take into account how many of those black people were killed by a cop while trying to kill a cop. Apparently, in the world of Shocking Statistics Used to Prove a Liberal Argument, such details are somehow irrelevant. Could it be that a companion study might prove that black males are also 20 times more likely to violently attack police officers? Has anyone checked up on that angle?

I don’t know this for sure, but I am going to assume that if you take criminals, drug dealers, gang bangers, thugs, and the like out of the equation, and compare law abiding citizens of all races, you’ll find that the ‘killed by a cop’ figures are virtually identical. Michael Brown was killed because he was a violent criminal, not because he had a skin pigmentation displeasing to the officer. In fact, you’ll discover that anyone of any color who obeys the law and doesn’t fight cops will almost certainly avoid being killed by them. Yes, there are exceptions. There are tragic accidents, mistakes, and misunderstandings — like the poor young boy who was shot after brandishing a realistic toy gun on the playground a few days ago — but these are the exception to the rule. For the most part, in the vast majority of cases, if you follow the law and avoid provoking violent encounters with the police, you will not be ‘hunted’ by anyone.

The obfuscation here is truly remarkable. No matter how often it happens, it will always boggle my mind that anyone could site these figures about blacks getting shot by cops without even mentioning that a large number of them were engaged in shoot-outs prompted by their decision to commit a crime. It’s one thing to try and mitigate these qualifiers, but to act like they have no bearing on the matter at all? Incredible. Simply incredible. And then to take the fate of violent criminals and extrapolate that it’s just as likely to befall any person of color regardless of their law abiding nature? Again, incredible. We have reached a level of intellectual dishonesty never before encountered by mankind. It’s like a self-imposed insanity of sorts, and it makes reasonable conversation impossible.

That said, they do have a point, actually.

The people who claim blacks are being targeted and erased are, in fact, raising an important issue.

The ones who hold signs saying ‘Black Lives Matter’ are making a profoundly necessary statement.

It’s just that the shooting of Michael Brown had nothing to do with it.

And the cops have nothing to do with it.

And nothing that Al Sharpton talks about has anything to do with it.

And none of the business owners whose buildings were destroyed had anything to do with it — although I’d amend that statement if it turns out that someone set a Planned Parenthood ablaze.

Indeed, if you want to protest the one institution which kills more black people than any other, head to your local abortion clinic.

US Army Plans to Send Abrams Tanks and Bradleys to Eastern Europe "To Counter Russia"

The new Army commander in Europe plans to bolster the U.S. armored presence in Poland and the Baltic states and keep rotations of U.S. troops there through next year and possibly beyond to counter Russia.

Lt. Gen. Frederick “Ben” Hodges, who replaced Lt. Gen. Donald M. Campbell earlier this month as commander of U.S. Army Europe, said the Army was looking to add about 100 Abrams tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles to the forces in Eastern Europe.

“We are looking at courses of action for how we could pre-position equipment that we would definitely want to put inside a facility where it would be better maintained, that rotational units could then come and draw on it and use it to train, or for contingency purposes,” Hodges said in a briefing from Vilnius, Lithuania. . .

Since taking command, Hodges has made clear his concerns about Russia, which annexed Crimea last March and has supported the separatists in eastern Ukraine. U.S. Army Europe, which had 280,000 troops at the height of the Cold War, now has 31,000.

The rotations of U.S. troops on training missions in Eastern Europe would provide “deterrence against Russian aggression,” Hodges said. . .

He referred to the NATO treaty article calling on all member states to respond to an attack on any member of the alliance. Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia are all members of the 28-member NATO alliance.

White House Shoots Down Petition to Declare Muslim Brotherhood a Terrorist Organization

By Sam Taylor.

The White House has officially rejected a ‘We the People’ petition calling for the U.S. Government to declare the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization after more than a year and 200,000 signatures…

However, the White House failed to respond until Monday, when it issued an unequivocal ‘no’:

We have not seen credible evidence that the Muslim Brotherhood has renounced its decades-long commitment to non-violence.
