FEMA Won’t Help States That Reject Climate Change Disasters as Real Science

femaFederal funds that help communities brace for emergencies will stop being provided to states if they ignore threats posed by climate change in their disaster planning.

States publish reports every five years or so detailing their vulnerability to natural disasters, such as floods, storms and wildfires, and how they plan to protect themselves and recover after them. Such plans are needed in order to qualify for a share of nearly $1 billion in Hazard Mitigation Assistance grants provided every year by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

But those plans rarely consider climate change impacts in detail — an omission that could see states become ineligible for the grants after new guidelines take effect early next year. Under FEMA’s updated guidelines, published last week, state disaster plans will only be approved if they adequately describe how the likelihood and intensity of natural hazards could be affected by growing levels of greenhouse gas pollution.

“The risk assessment must provide a summary of the probability of future hazard events,” the new guidelines state. “Probability must include considerations of changing future conditions, including the effects of long-term changes in weather patterns and climate.”

Some states, including California and Connecticut, already consider climate change in their plans, albeit imperfectly, said Rebecca Hammer, a Natural Resources Defense Council attorney who has been pressuring FEMA to make such a change for several years. But she said there are “a lot” of states that fail to adequately consider climate change in their disaster planning, including Florida, Texas, and “a lot of the states in the middle of the country.” (Read more from “FEMA Won’t Help States That Don’t Plan for Climate Change” HERE)

Obama Promotes Mandatory Voting for Every US Citizen and Here’s the Response from Social Media‏

Obama floated the idea of mandatory voting in the U.S. while speaking to a civic group in Cleveland on Wednesday. Asked about the corrosive influence of money in U.S. elections, Obama digressed into the related topic of voting rights and said the U.S. should be making it easier — not harder— for people to vote.

Just ask Australia, where citizens have no choice but to vote, the president said.

“If everybody voted, then it would completely change the political map in this country,” Obama said, calling it potentially transformative. Oops! Social Media Users Point out the Biggest Hypocrisy Behind Obama’s ‘Mandatory Voting’ Idea

His self-described, “potentially transformative” idea of imposing “mandatory voting” comes after a string of upsetting election losses for his party – which suffered from a combination of bad voter turnout and worse Obama policies.

Perhaps it was Tuesday’s win of Obama’s nemesis, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, that prompted him to speak his tyrannical desires when he addressed a Cleveland civic group Wednesday.

Confirmed: Iran Endorses Nuclear EMP Attack on United States [+video]

By Paul Bedard. Suspected for years of plotting to dismantle the U.S. electric grid, American officials have confirmed that Iranian military brass have endorsed a nuclear electromagnetic pulse explosion that would attack the country’s power system.

American defense experts made the discovery while translating a secret Iranian military handbook, raising new concerns about Tehran’s recent nuclear talks with the administration.

The issue of a nuclear EMP attack was raised in the final hours of this week’s elections in Israel when U.S. authority Peter Vincent Pry penned a column for Arutz Sheva warning of Iran’s threat to free nations.

“Iranian military documents describe such a scenario — including a recently translated Iranian military textbook that endorses nuclear EMP attack against the United States,” he wrote.

EMP, Extremely Dangerous

By Dan Eden. As usual, viewzone gave me a writing assignment about something of which I knew very little — this time it was something called the electromagnetic pulse, or “EMP” weapon. As usual, what I learned from my research scared the hell out of me.


When I first sat down to write this story, America had no real enemy capable of using an EMP weapon. That’s a good thing because, as you will learn, this is far more dangerous and potentially more lethal than a nuclear bomb. We have known that the Russians have EMP weapons because of their published (an sometimes not) research with the technology. And now, of course, we can include China . . .

A declassified intelligence report, obtained by the private National Security Archive, provides details on China’s EMP weapons and plans for their use. Annual Pentagon reports on China’s military in the past made only passing references to the arms. (Read more from this story HERE)

Church Sign About ‘Legalizing Sin’ Draws Controversy [+videos]

cHURCHBy Chellie Mills. A controversial church sign about “legalizing sin” is the talk of one Oklahoma town.

One person says they feel the sign seems to be about recent marriage laws in Oklahoma.

However, others in the community interpreted it differently.

“I really don’t know what that pertains to,” Rodney, a Seminole resident, said.

Controversial Marriage License Bill Passes House, Headed to Senate

By Abby Broyles. A bill passed by the Oklahoma House of Representatives would change the way marriage licenses are issued.

That duty would fall under responsibility of members of the clergy or those authorized to perform marriage ceremonies.

Some lawyers are saying the bill is unconstitutional.

The author of House Bill 1125, Rep. Todd Russ, wrote it in response to the Supreme Court’s decision making same-sex marriage Constitutional.

He said Oklahoma should be able to go around the decision, but legal experts say that’s not how it works. (Read more from this story HERE)

Cover-Up Continues? Secret Service May Have Erased Surveillance Tapes

secret service directorSecret Service Director Joe Clancy told lawmakers in a closed-door meeting that the Secret Service may have erased surveillance video of agents driving a car through an active bomb threat investigation at the White House.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz told CNN that on Tuesday, Clancy showed him and other lawmakers two videos, one of which didn’t show much of the action.

“We inquired if there were additional tapes and angles and the director informed us that there may not be because it’s their policy to erase them 72 hours after they record, which is just unfathomable,” Chaffetz said. “I can’t think of any good reason to do that.”

“This is not your local 7-11. This is the White House,” he said.

Chaffetz said he was frustrated Clancy didn’t know if more tapes existed and wondered how two tapes survived while others might not have. (Read more from “Secret Service May Have Erased Surveillance Tapes” HERE)

Dr. Pepper: The Doctor Of Choice For A 104-Year-Old Woman [+video]

d pepperA Fort Worth woman is celebrating her 104th year of life. “Well at 103 I didn’t think I’d make it, but I’m still perking along.”

At 104 years old, Elizabeth Sullivan says she doesn’t need the advice of real doctors. So she keeps another doctor close by.

“People try to give me coffee for breakfast. Well, I’d rather have a Dr. Pepper.” Sullivan fell in love with the soft drink’s trademark “23 flavors” when she was in her 60’s. “I started drinking them about 40 years ago. Three a day.

Every doctor that sees me says they’ll kill you, but they die and I don’t. So there must be a mistake somewhere.”
For her birthday she got a very big surprise. A beautiful cake shaped like what else, Dr. Pepper.

23 Dreamers from Obama Amnesty Snared in Criminal Dragnet

deportationBy Stephen Dinan. Nearly two dozen of the illegal immigrants picked up in a nationwide sweep for criminal aliens earlier this month had previously been approved for President Obama’s deportation amnesty, the Homeland Security Department said Wednesday.

All 23 were part of Mr. Obama’s original program for so-called Dreamers, which began in 2012 and which had granted tentative legal legal status to nearly 640,000 as of the end of last year.

Of the 23, 15 were still actively part of the amnesty, while eight had been approved once but had not gotten their status renewed after the first two-year period expired.

The department is trying to deport all of them now.

The Dreamers were snared as part of Operation Cross Check, which saw U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents go after top-priority targets for deportation in a move the administration said proved that they were still trying to deport dangerous illegal immigrants, even as Mr. Obama moves ahead with his amnesty. Texas Judge Threatens Justice Department over Obama’s Immigration Plan

By David Zucchino. A federal judge threatened Thursday to sanction the U.S. Department of Justice if he finds that government lawyers misled him about the rollout of President Obama’s plan to shield up to five million people from the threat of deportation.

U.S. District Judge Andrew S. Hanen, visibly annoyed, confronted a U.S. deputy assistant attorney general over previous government assurances on the timing of the program.


He asked why he shouldn’t grant a discovery request for internal federal immigration documents, a request filed Thursday by 26 states that are suing over Obama’s executive actions on immigration.

Hanen ordered a freeze on the Obama plan on Feb. 16 in response to the lawsuit, which accuses the administration of overstepping the president’s executive authority.

At a one-hour hearing in Brownsville, Hanen gave the Department of Justice 48 hours to file a motion in response. He said he would then rule promptly on whether to require the government to produce immigration documents concerning applications under Obama’s deferred action program. Coma Victim Comes Back to Life After Hearing Doctors Ask Her Husband the Unthinkable

coma victimA mother has described how she heard a doctor asking her husband about switching off her life-support as she lay in a medically-induced coma after collapsing from a rare condition.

Jenny Bone, who was feared to have catastrophic brain damage after going into cardiac arrest, lay listening to the life-or-death conversation but was paralysed and unable to intervene.

She recalls her husband John ruling out ending her life – despite a previous conversation when she said she wanted to die if incapacitated permanently. The 40-year-old later recovered and now says she is relieved he went against her wishes.

‘I was aware of conversations around me,’ she said. ‘The most frequent one was being turned in the bed. A familiar “ready, steady, turn” would come from the nurses.

‘The most alarming was between a doctor and my husband enquiring as to my wishes surrounding being kept alive on a ventilator and that they were unsure whether my mental ability had been impaired due to lack of oxygen while they were attempting to restart my heart. After Terminator Arm, DARPA Now Wants Implantable Hard Drive for the Brain [+video]

TerminatorAn experimental Pentagon program has already developed two types of a highly advanced, Terminator-like prosthetic arm.

What’s more, a quadriplegic woman with sensors implanted onto her brain controlled one of the robotic limbs to grab a cup, shake hands and eat a chocolate bar. She even flew an F-35 Joint Strike Fighter simulator using just her thoughts.

Now, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) wants to expand on that cutting-edge work to build other potential breakthrough medical technologies, including a pacemaker-sized device that might someday improve the memory of troops who suffered a traumatic brain injury. Think of it as a hard drive of sorts for the brain.

“We know we need a next-generation device that doesn’t exist today,” said Justin Sanchez, a program manager in DARPA’s Biological Technologies Office in Arlington, Virginia. “That’s what these new programs are all about — not only understanding the brain and these conditions, but building the hardware that enables us to address those issues.
