TV Legend Gives These Strong Opinions About American Life

Legendary TV producer Norman Lear stopped by the Televisison Critics Association’s press tour in Beverly Hills to promote an upcoming PBS documentary covering his career that’s set to debut next year. But what seemed to most impress reporters was the 93-year-old’s opinionated tangents, covering politics, TV, America and mindfullness. Below are six highlights from a press conference with the creator of hits like All in the Family, The Jeffersons and One Day at a Time:

— On politics: “Everybody knows me to be a progressive or a liberal or lefty or whatever. I think of myself as a bleeding-heart conservative. You will not f— with my Bill of Rights, my Constitution, my guarantees of political justice for all. But does my heart bleed for those who need help and aren’t getting the justice that the country promises them and the equal opportunity the country promises? Yes. I’m a bleeding heart, but I think myself to be a total social conservative. The people who are running just don’t seem to have America on their minds, not the America I think about. When I was a kid we were in love with America. As early as I can remember, there was a civics class in my public school. And I was in love with those things that guaranteed freedom before I learned that there were people who hated me because I was Jewish. I had a Bill of Rights and a Constitution, those words out of the Declaration that protected me. And I knew about that because we had civics in class. We don’t have that much in the country anymore. So before World War II or shortly after, we were in love with America because we understood what it was about and that’s what we were in love with. I believe everybody’s patriotic today. Everybody loves America. But I don’t need their flag plans to prove it. I’d like to go back to civics lessons.”

— On waking up: “I want to wake up feeling as I usually do, loving the day. The title of my book is Even This I Get to Experience, and that’s the way I basically look at life moment to moment. And now I’m looking out at you. I was 93 on Monday. So it took me 93 [years] and five days to get here. It took you every split second of each of your lives to get here for me. So I’m way ahead of you. It took all your lives to get here, so this moment is the moment. Even this we get to experience.”

— On the Golden Age of television: “I think this is the Golden Age. I understand what the Golden Age was when I was coming into television, and it was those years of Playhouse 90 and Philco Playhouse. But there’s great drama and some great comedy on television today. I can’t see it all.”

Canadian Hitchhiking Robot’s Cross-Country Trip Ends Prematurely in the City of Love

The Canadian researchers who created hitchBOT as a social experiment told The Associated Press that someone in Philadelphia damaged the robot beyond repair on Saturday, ending its first American tour after about two weeks.

The kid-size robot set out to travel cross-country after successfully hitchhiking across Canada in 26 days last year and parts of Europe. It is immobile on its own so gets from place to place by relying on the kindness of strangers . . .

The creators were sent an image of the vandalized robot Saturday but cannot track its location because the battery is dead. They said they don’t know who destroyed it or why. But co-creator Frauke Zeller said many children who adored the robot are now heartbroken. (Read more from “Hitchhiking Robot’s Cross-Country Trip in US Ends Prematurely in Philly” HERE)

Police Warn of Criminally-Controlled No-Go Zones in Germany

Spiraling levels of violent crime perpetrated by immigrants from the Middle East and the Balkans are turning parts of Duisburg, a key German industrial city, into “areas of lawlessness” — areas that are becoming de facto “no-go” zones for police, according to a confidential police report that was leaked to the German newsmagazine Der Spiegel.

The report, produced by the police headquarters of North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous state of Germany (and also the state with the largest Muslim population in Germany), warns that the government is losing control over problem neighborhoods and that the ability of police to maintain public order “cannot be guaranteed over the long term.”

Duisburg, which has a total population of around 500,000, is home to an estimated 60,000 mostly Turkish Muslims, making it one of the most Islamized cities in Germany. In recent years, however, thousands of Bulgarians and Romanians (including Sinti and Roma “gypsies”) have flocked to Duisburg, creating a volatile ethno-religious cauldron . . .

The leak of the document comes amid a spike in attacks on police by mobs of immigrants, not only in Duisburg, but across the country . . .

Germany is now home to the largest number of immigrants (8.2 million) of any member state of the European Union. Germany also has the second-largest Muslim population (5 million) in the EU. (Read more from “Police Warn of No-Go Zones in Germany” HERE)

Apartment Complex Reverses Itself, Veteran Allowed to Keep American Flag

Keith Ludwig says when it comes to flying his American flag, it’s a matter of principle.

He is now relieved that he can keep it hanging off his balcony. After the story ran on Fox 8, Ludwig was contacted by his apartment complex and told he was allowed to keep the flag.

“I’m a veteran, my grandfather’s a veteran, my dad’s a veteran. We’re a military family,” he said early Friday.

So Ludwig said he was surprised, and angered, when the management of Shoregate Towers told him on Thursday he’d have to remove the flag that flies from his balcony.

Ludwig showed us his lease, and there is a clause on using the exterior of the units that basically prohibits hanging or affixing anything to the balconies. But Ludwig questions why it took management more than two years to raise the issue with him and whether that clause is really meant to apply to an American flag. Blood on His Hands: Jeb Bush Was Director of Philanthropy That Gave Tens of Millions to Planned Parenthood

By Ben Johnson. Until the eve of his presidential campaign, Jeb Bush was director of a philanthropy that gave tens of millions of dollars to Planned Parenthood and financed its advocacy of “unrestricted access to abortion” around the world. The charity also approved money to global abortion providers while he sat on its board.

In 2010, Jeb was named one of the founding directors of the Bloomberg Family Foundation, established as a tax-exempt foundation to advance the vision of former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He resigned from the board at the end of 2014 to prepare his presidential campaign.

While a Bush spokesman has responded to concerns by saying that Bush would not have voted on every initiative of the foundation, a pro-life leader told LifeSiteNews it “stretches credibility” that Bush was unaware of the foundation’s pro-abortion work, given the centrality of such work to the foundation’s mission, and its scope . . .

$50 million to ‘reproductive health’ and Planned Parenthood

In March of 2014, the Bloomberg Philanthropies announced a $50 million undertaking to expand “reproductive health,” including lobbying foreign nations to loosen restrictions on abortion. (Read more from “Jeb Bush Was Director of Philanthropy That Gave Tens of Millions to Planned Parenthood” HERE)

Hillary Clinton Attacks Jeb Bush on ‘Right to Rise’

By Laura Meckler. Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton sharply attacked one of the top Republicans in the presidential race, saying Jeb Bush’s “Right to Rise” slogan is empty given his policy positions.

“I don’t think you can credibly say that everybody has a ‘right to rise’ and then say you’re for phasing out Medicare or for repealing Obamacare,” she said Friday morning. “People can’t rise if they can’t afford health care. They can’t rise if the minimum wage is too low to live on.”

Her remarks came at a conference for the National Urban League, a group that advocates on behalf of African-Americans, shortly before Mr. Bush addressed the same audience. Mrs. Clinton enjoys strong support from African-American voters, but Mr. Bush is working to expand his support among minorities and to put himself forward as ready to broaden the Republican Party’s tent.

“I’m working for every vote,” Mr. Bush told the group. He didn’t reply to Mrs. Clinton’s critique, but a spokeswoman called her comments “more false, cheap political shots” meant to distract from Mrs. Clinton’s lack of accomplishments.

Mrs. Clinton and two other Democrats who addressed the group focused heavily on a string of deaths of black people at the hands of police or in police custody and on economic inequality. Mr. Bush didn’t mention the deaths or the “black lives matter” movement that activists have embraced, instead focusing on his record in Florida on expanding the economy and improving public schools. Company Trying to Block Video That Could Prove Aborted Babies Were Born Alive, Then Harvested [+video]

By Steve Watson. The leader of the Center for Medical Progress (CMP), the organization exposing Planned Parenthood, told CNN “New Day” this morning that a biomedical company is trying to silence CMP because they are “very scared” of footage coming out that will prove babies were born alive before being “aborted” and having tissue and organs harvested.

California based StemExpress, a company closely allied with Planned Parenthood that provides fetal tissue to researchers, has managed to convince a Superior Court judge to issue a temporary restraining order against CMP.

The order bars the undercover journalists from releasing any more footage of StemExpress officials.

David Daleiden explained why he believes StemExpress is taking such hefty action:

Investigator Says Stemxpress Bought Intact Intact Dead Babies From Planned Parenthood

By Austin Ruse. Undercover investigator David Daleiden tells CNN the reason StemExpress is trying to suppress the video he took of its CEO on May 22 is because the company doesn’t want anyone to know it bought whole intact dead babies from Planned Parenthood.

Daleiden said on CNN, “In a meeting with their top leadership, they admitted that they sometimes get fully intact fetuses shipped to their laboratory from the abortion clinics they work with, and that could be prima facie evidence of born alive infants. And so that’s why they’re trying to suppress that videotape and they’re very scared of it.”

On May 22, Daleiden and his team had lunch with StemExpress CEO Cate Dyer and other senior personnel from the company that is the main buyer of freshly killed baby parts from Planned Parenthood. As the Center for Medical Progress has released videos, four so far, it is certain that anyone who met with Daleiden, who was posing as CEO of a fictitious company called BioMax, would become worried about what they might have said. Apparently StemExpress talked about things that may shock America and any future stockholders of the as-yet privately held company. (Read more from this story HERE)

Is the GOP on the Brink of Civil War?

Senator Ted Cruz voiced the unhappiness of many Republican conservatives when he took to the floor of the Senate last Friday and in a rare intraparty broadside accused GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell of lying. Veteran Republican senators quickly rallied to McConnell’s defense. . .

Cruz said McConnell had told Republican conservatives in the Senate that there was no behind-the-scenes deal to revive the controversial Export-Import Bank. Conservatives view the bank as corporate welfare, while the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and pro-business Republicans are big supporters of it. But rather than let the bank stand or fall on a separate vote, McConnell announced at the last minute that a measure allowing reauthorization of the bank would be attached to much more popular legislation for funding highways. This maneuver guaranteed the bank’s reauthorization.

Conservative senators hit the ceiling. “The American people elected a Republican majority believing that a Republican majority would be somehow different from a Democratic majority in the United States Senate,” Cruz said, comparing McConnell to his predecessor as Senate majority leader, Democrat Harry Reid. “Unfortunately, the way the current Senate operates, there is one party, the Washington party.”

Sixty-nine percent (69%) of Republican voters agreed with Cruz recently when he responded to Jeb Bush’s comment about the need for Americans to work harder by saying: “The problem is not that Americans aren’t working hard enough. It is that the Washington cartel of career politicians, special interests and lobbyists have rigged the game against them.” [Just 38% of Republicans agreed with Bush.] (Read more from “Is the GOP on the Brink of Civil War?” HERE)

The 4th Video: Is This Planned Parenthood’s Bill Cosby Moment? [+videos]

The fourth and most horrifying video has appeared exposing Planned Parenthood and its profiteering off of the bodies of unborn children it kills. In the most appalling moment in recent American history, we can now see for ourselves as abortionists pull out the corpse of a newly killed child and announce, “It’s another boy.” Then they start talking prices.

Instead of forthrightly answering the profound moral questions these videos are raising, the billion-dollar organization is using its army of lawyers to try to abort the truth. According to Fox News, a Los Angeles court has imposed a restraining order on the Center for Medical Progress, preventing it from releasing any videos exposing StemExpress, one of Planned Parenthood’s most enthusiastic customers for unborn baby parts. It’s unclear if this legal gag order will be allowed to stand and dry up the stream of reporting at its source. Indeed, it wouldn’t be surprising if the courageous reporters at the Center for Medical Progress flouted it, knowing that the whole pro-life movement and leading presidential contenders would back them up.

The Bill Cosby Playbook

It hurts to lose a hero. When a person or organization has served for most of our lives as an icon of something good and important, we resist any suggestion that things might not be quite what they’ve seemed, that something is rotten in Denmark.

At first, we simply ignore the news, assuming that idle gossip or spiteful rumors are what’s at work. We might write off the first few reports as the work of “haters,” resentful rivals or fortune hunters. The icon’s defenders will round up other celebrities and leaders whom we trust to go on the record dismissing the allegations. Next, the attempt is made to kill the messenger, to discredit any accusers as venal, sleazy or extremist. Best of all is if the icon’s lawyers can find some compliant judge to issue a “gag” order and strangle the flow of information.

Given the public’s short attention span this tactic might prove effective. If we have really strong reasons for wanting to go on trusting the icon, then we will be relieved that the stories have stopped leaking out and assume that there was really no truth behind them.

This was the playbook that Bill Cosby and his damage control team were using, and it almost worked. Had there been a little less evidence and had his accusers been less courageous, his reputation might have survived. Best of all, from his perspective, would be if he could have found a judge willing to silence the women accusing him — to tie up in costly legal proceedings their right to tell their own stories.

Planned Parenthood is using the exact playbook in its attempts to spin, distort and silence the evidence collected through three years of in-depth, undercover reporting by the Center for Medical Progress. First, Planned Parenthood issued blank denials and claimed the three videos released so far had been deceptively edited: Move along, there’s nothing to see here. But the CMP calmly replied that it had already posted the raw, unedited footage online for journalists to check themselves.

Then, Planned Parenthood called on its closest allies, President Obama and candidate Clinton, who vouched for the group’s good will and moral probity. Who were these pro-life “nobodies,” compared to the president of the United States and the presumptive Democratic nominee? But courageous Republican lawmakers such as Ted Cruz and Rand Paul stepped forward in response, along with other candidates such as Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina, dozens of Republican congressmen, and at least one Democratic politician, Ohio state representative Bill Patmon.

Then, Planned Parenthood tried to kill the messenger, falsely tying the Center for Medical Progress to assorted reckless cranks at the outermost fringes of the pro-life movement. (Every movement has such hangers-on; think of the brick-throwing anarchists who showed up at Occupy Wall Street.)

None of it worked. Now, Planned Parenthood is counting on sheer legal muscle — grabbing the coercive power of the state and using it to gag journalists and silence opposition. Beyond its efforts in court, Planned Parenthood’s crisis-management PR flacks have been sending ominous memos to TV producers warning them not to air further videos and implying that they might face legal action. These are not the actions of an innocent organization. They are the desperate flailing of a criminal caught in the act, yanking at every string of power still within reach.

And it all will probably backfire. However pro-choice they might be, most journalists don’t take kindly to censorship and threats. Neither do most Americans, who will start asking of Planned Parenthood, as they did of Bill Cosby: What are they trying to hide? We knew Bill Cosby was finished when his longtime defender Whoopi Goldberg abandoned him. Now pro-choice feminist icon Camille Paglia is criticizing the mainstream media for failing to cover the story about the Planned Parenthood videos. The giant abortuarium is nearing its “Bill Cosby moment.”

We Don’t Want to Believe It; We Don’t Want to Know

Remember how cool and reassuring Bill Cosby always was? Here was a man who grew up in the depths of a bigoted America. He would have been justified in taking refuge in righteous black anger — which the great comedian, Paul Mooney, has made a career out of channeling. But Bill Cosby rose above it. He modeled the character virtues required for success, and preached those virtues to young people who needed them. Remember how he used to rebuke gangster rappers for their violence and misogyny?

Bill Cosby represented for many of us the fruition of Martin Luther King’s dream that black people would attain the American vision of freedom that had been for so long denied them. That’s why we didn’t want to believe that he was drugging and exploiting women sexually, using the kind of force and fraud that our country had employed on his ancestors. When he fought to silence his accusers and quash the truth, we were silently rooting for him. We didn’t want it to be true. We had spent hundreds of hours watching Mr. Huxtable on TV being a model husband and father and that was the person we loved. He was good and admirable, and we wanted to believe in him.

Many of us also wanted to believe in Planned Parenthood. Americans have been barraged for decades with happy-clappy messages about the organization serving as a heroic apostolate on the front lines in America’s poorest neighborhoods, guaranteeing good health and sexual freedom to our nation’s neediest women. These messages hid the organization’s racist origins and airbrushed its founder, Margaret Sanger, and her ties to Nazi eugenics — remaking her as an icon of cheerful, free modern womanhood.

The Center for Medical Progress has shattered this fantasy, and shown us the cost of Margaret Sanger’s dream: It is quantified in prices for pieces of broken children. No judge, no PR flack, no government hack can now contain this story. The truth is running free. Chinese Christians Defend Rooftop Crosses, Prepare for Confrontation [+video]

Chinese officials in Wenzhou, a city of the Zhejiang province with a high concentration of Christians, have given Christian communities a deadline to remove rooftop crosses from their churches, but some of the local pastors have responded with defiance, placing guards at their churches to defend the crosses.

It is “likely that there will be clashes,” said a church representative in Tengqiao town.

The government ultimatum is the latest in a long-running campaign against the crosses. Authorities have already demolished hundreds of rooftop crosses from Protestant and Catholic churches, and in May, they enacted new regulations against any placement of the Christian symbol on top of buildings.

The new regulations for religious structures stipulated that any crosses must be affixed to the façade of buildings rather than above the roof, and could not measure more than one-tenth of the height of the façade. Crosses also must fit in with the façade and the surroundings.

Following the government crackdown on crosses, a number of church pastors defied the ruling, going so far as to replace demolished crosses, and in some cases, to put up bigger ones. (Read more from “Chinese Christians Defend Rooftop Crosses, Prepare for Confrontation” HERE)

It’s Official: US Terror Threat Not Islamist, Only ‘Extremist’

Homeland Security chief Jeh Johnson announced the policy this past Friday at Aspen Institute’s annual security forum in Washington, D.C. He explained that though it was a Muslim terrorist who shot to death four unarmed Marines in Tennessee two weeks ago, the government will call the attack, and other similar ones, “violent extremism” and not “Islamic terrorism” – out of respect for the Muslim community.

Johnson said it is “critical” to refrain from the “Islamic” label in order to “build trust” among Muslims.

The Tennessee murderer, Mohammad Abdulazeez, is officially a “homegrown violent extremist,” according to the government – even though he blogged about his Islamic religious motivations for the attack. He and his family also attended a local mosque controlled by a terror-tied Islamic trust.

Johnson explained that if officials called Islamic terrorism “Islamic,” they’d “get nowhere” in gaining the “cooperation” of the Muslim community.

The moderator of the panel tried to protest: “Isn’t [the] government denying the fundamental religious component of this kind of extremism by not using the word Islamic?” (Read more from “It’s Official: US Terror Threat Not Islamist, Only ‘Extremist'” HERE)
