Topping Turmoil: Big Pizza Company Fights ObamaCare Menu Mandate

dominos_hoboken_15The pizza lobby is mounting a double-extra-large battle against looming government regulations that would force their franchises to post a dizzying array of calorie counts on their menus.

Under ObamaCare, a Food and Drug Administration rule would require restaurants and food retail shops with over 20 locations, like pizza delivery chains, to post in-store menus displaying nutritional information.

Pizza chains argue this would be particularly tough for them, and take extraordinarily large menu boards. Domino’s Pizza claims it offers 34 million different pie combinations; Pizza Hut boasted last year it can make 2 billion different pizzas. While the FDA has suggested restaurants can institute calorie “ranges” for each pizza, one Domino’s franchise owner in Missouri guessed it would cost him $5,000 to build the boards — though over 90 percent of Domino’s business comes in over the phone or online, and so most customers never see the in-store board.

“You can’t possibly fit all the iterations of pizza on a typical menu board like you can for burgers, for example,” Lynn Liddle, executive vice president of communications for Domino’s, said in testimony before Congress in June. According to this Domino’s video, menu boards are used in less than 1.5 percent of their total orders each day. She told FoxNews.com Thursday that Domino’s has been providing nutritional information voluntarily online for 10 years.

“I think what we’re doing is the right thing for our consumers and for the small business owners, so they do not have to pay for a big static menu board that won’t help the consumer anyway,” said Liddle, who also represents the American Pizza Community — a consortium including Pizza Hut, Little Caesars and Papa John’s now lobbying to relax the rules under proposed legislation. Planned Parenthood and the Gift of Death

Adam-and-Eve-Banished-from-Garden-of-Eden_compressed_croppedYesterday I was privileged to attend a summit of the Watchmen, a national group of civic-minded pastors organized by that warrior for truth Tony Perkins. Then this morning I turned on my computer to find a fresh glimpse into hell — in the form of a new video exposing the sale of baby human organs for profit in America. So I faced both options from Moses’ offer to the Hebrews: “I set before you this day a blessing and a curse.” (Deut. 11:26)

As Al Perrotta laid out in his news report on the Watchmen meeting, there were many powerful voices proclaiming the urgency of the hour. One speaker after another rose to warn the assembled church leaders of just how thin the margin now is for religious freedom in America, to point out how cruel our nation is becoming, with the crass trade in human organs from aborted children now common knowlege — and shrugged off by our president and the whole Democratic party. The Watchmen spoke of faith grown lukewarm, of pastors now weary of swimming against the culture, who shrug and fall silent as their flocks wander off to the slaughter. Others spoke of the hope for revival, of the power of God to answer our prayers with a Great Awakening that could wash over America, smashing its structures of sin into damp piles of splinters.

But for some reason one speaker touched me more than the others, a messenger from the distant Christian past — indeed from our pre-history, from the covenant with Israel. Rabbi Jonathan Cahn addressed the Watchmen via recorded video message. Perhaps his speech had extra force because of his own people’s history, which was so intertwined with promises from God that were conditioned on its faithfulness — promises which, when flouted, transformed themselves into ferocious temporal punishments. Just as America has seemed in so many ways, for two long centuries, uniquely blessed, it’s impossible not to wonder what will become of us should those blessings be withdrawn. We have seen some ominous hints.

As Rabbi Cahn explained, we have allowed ourselves to drift far from the truths that the West once knew about human nature, truths that we learned from the Jews. Indeed, we have embarked on a strange and perilous project: to transform ourselves into entirely new creatures, not bound by the rules of mortal, biological life or by the God who created us. We have no gender but what we choose, no morals but those we embrace, no debt that we owe to the future in repayment for all the gifts we got from the past. Our “choices” are sacrosanct and beyond any criticism. But life is cheap. It can be measured out in tiny livers and severed limbs, and sold piecemeal by Planned Parenthood to labs such as StemExpress.

The Sin of Adam

We have in our own way re-enacted the sin of Adam, whose desire to “be like God” cast away the blessings that came with creation. We often forget the second part of that story, a section which always puzzled me until I read the way C.S. Lewis explained it. Remember that there were two trees in Eden: The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and beside it the Tree of Life. Once Adam and Eve had sinned, they were expelled from the Garden immediately, lest they eat of the Tree of Life.

What would have happened if they had managed to munch on those golden apples? As Lewis writes, when God prevented that, He was protecting us from ourselves. Unlike the demons, we die. We have what Tolkien called in The Lord of the Rings the “gift” of death. We have at least that limit to the evil that we can do, and a merciful, ugly reminder of our limitations and neediness. A race of fallen men become immortal would be a generation of monsters, growing not older or wiser, but simply more sophisticated and wicked. And that seems to be our goal now, as one nation after another gives up on having children, while scientists work furiously in search of immortality formulas. Our collective goal seems to be clear: A world full of ageless, sterile consumers who only mix their chromosomes when they need a fresh batch of baby organs for transplant.

It is natural for us to try to mitigate the sufferings in this life, and to fight off disease and death. Unlike the animals, we feel somewhere deep within that we were not made for the grave. We are not like salmon who spawn, then instantly lie down and die. Instead, we cling to life, and to hope for eternal life — and see in our children not copies of ourselves, or extensions of our egos, but fresh new creations, each of them just like us in one essential way: They too are made for eternity. We are sad that we cannot remain in this place, so we mourn for ourselves, even as we celebrate the growth and life of those whom we have brought up to replace us. That is why we cry at weddings.

This truth came home forcefully on the day that I sat, in the hospital where I was born, to watch my father die. He looked at me, then looked up, then looked no more. As I worked through my grief, and wandered my neighborhood bleary-eyed, I saw a young mother pushing a carriage that held a squirming, giggling infant. And the thought was given to me: No death, no babies. Men like my father (and someday, like me) must step aside to make room for the new folks, as others had made room for us. And God seeks to gather us all to Himself, each at our own proper moment.

At least, this is how things are meant to work, when we are humble enough to accept our place in creation, and treasure some hope for redemption.

What happens when we push ourselves out of place, when we throw back in our ancestors’ teeth all the lessons they passed on to us, including the truths of natural reason, and the flashes of divine insight that we used to call Revelation?

We become unhinged. Our halves cease to function in harmony. We cannot make sense of our compound nature as amalgams of body and spirit. Our desires grow ever more limitless and disconnected from our needs, while the bodies that contain us begin to feel like prisons, battered dinghies that gradually take on water, which someday will sink us to drown in bottomless darkness. We feel more than ever the urge to be as gods, but reject the knowledge that tells us we are anything more than animals — brainy beasts made to breed, then die, with no hope of eternity. That enrages us. It mocks us. It’s the skull poking out through the skin. So we look for scapegoats, for victims.

Who better than the little ones who are shoving forth to replace us? Sure, we might accept one or two, if they happen to come exactly when we want them, and match our specifications. But those who arrive unexpectedly, or whose genes prove them “inferior,” will find no welcome here. Some 54 million so far have we mowed down. We have forgotten that we are guests on this earth, whom others have suffered to raise from birth, sojourners en route to someplace utterly different. Instead we act like squatters, who have seized a home from its owner and claimed it as our own.

The rage of the pro-choice protester is nothing more than this: the ferocity of a thief defending his pile of stolen goods. It’s the terrified fury that Macbeth felt as he guarded his stolen crown.

And our Lady Macbeth, Planned Parenthood, counts her jewels with bloody hands. (Re-posted with permission, “Planned Parenthood and the Gift of Death” originally appeared HERE)

Trump Has a Very Surprising Distant Relative Who Happens to Be a Presidential Candidate

Hunterj_is_a_Question_markRepublican presidential candidate Donald Trump may not be as much of the political outsider as purported in interviews and campaign stomps. He is actually related to royalty – and is a distant cousin of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

As it turns out, both are related to John of Gaunt, a 14th century royal. Gaunt, who was the 1st Duke of Lancaster, was the son of King Edward III. According to MyHeritage, Trump is related through his mother, Mary Anne Macleod, back to his 17th great-grandfather, John Beaufort, while Clinton is related through her father and the Rodham family, back to her 17th great-grandmother, Joan Beaufort. The two candidates are 19th cousins. Neither has commented on this fact . . .

Having two presidential candidates who are related isn’t new. The website We Are All Related shows that all of the U.S. presidents, except for one, are related. The common ancestor was John “Lackland” Plantagenet, who was the King of England in 1166. The project, completed by 10-year-old BridgeAnne d’Avignon, showed the only president who does not share the royal ancestry with the other presidents was President Martin Van Buren. Mass Muslim Migration to Europe Is Suicidal, and Misguided Christian Compassion Enables It

1italy-migrants-refugees-asylum-seekers-1One of the greatest thinkers of the nineteenth century was Frederic Bastiat. He was a “classical liberal” who favored the maximum freedom for citizens for the longest possible time. He didn’t argue for anarchy, or a state too weak to defend its borders and citizens’ rights. Such freedom is fleeting — it vanishes when the first bully, local or international, can rally enough thugs to steal it. In today’s terms, we would call Bastiat a small government conservative, or even a “Tea Party Catholic.”

One of Bastiat’s greatest insights was the tendency of leftists (and among them too many Christians) to fixate on immediate problems, and grab the nearest blunt instrument to solve them — while refusing to think of the pain they unjustly impose on innocent third parties. He illustrated this point in a classic essay, “That Which is Seen, and That Which is Not Seen.” In it we learn of the “Broken Window Fallacy,” which can afflict a tender-hearted person who sees a storekeeper’s window get broken. The onlooker chooses to look on the bright side: Look, here are two jobs created, one for a glassmaker and one for a window installer. With that in mind, he walks down the street with a hammer, smashing each window he encounters — or perhaps just the fanciest windows, of the shopkeepers he judges can afford to share the wealth.

(The author discusses this article and the dangerous issues connected with Muslim immigration at 10:20 in the video below:)

What is wrong with this jobs program? As Bastiat patiently explains:

It is not seen that as our shopkeeper has spent six francs upon one thing, he cannot spend them upon another. It is not seen that if he had not had a window to replace, he would, perhaps, have replaced his old shoes, or added another book to his library. In short, he would have employed his six francs in some way, which this accident has prevented. … He would have spent six francs on shoes, and would have had at the same time the enjoyment of a pair of shoes and of a window.

The “unseen” victims, whose interests are disregarded, are the shopkeeper himself, and the shoemaker who goes hungry, since nobody’s buying shoes: they’re too busy replacing their windows.

Pope Francis: Defending the Seen but not So Much the Unseen

One influential would-be window breaker today is, sadly, Pope Francis. His legitimate Christian compassion for poor people worldwide has led him to grab hold of crude, mistaken theories of economics, which wherever they have been implemented have made things much worse for the poor, crippled the middle class and concentrated wealth in the hands of corrupt elites who know how to manipulate the government. In fact, such policies took Francis’ native Argentina, which was as rich as the United States around 1900, and turned it into an irretrievable basket case. Samuel Gregg’s learned explanation of how that happened appeared right here at The Stream.

Perhaps more troubling than Pope Francis’ personal economic theories are his statements on mass immigration, which are echoed by his deputies around the world, including the U.S. bishops. (See Cardinal Dolan’s attack on Donald Trump as an anti-Catholic “nativist.”) As John Allen reports, Pope Francis’ point-man on Italian politics, Bishop Nunzio Galantino, condemned those statesmen who are skeptical of mass immigration as “peanut venders … who in order to get votes say extraordinarily stupid things.” Galantino complained that European countries are too slow and stingy to offer asylum to migrants who claim refugee status, insisting: “It’s not enough just to save migrants at sea in order to soothe the national conscience.”

Fear of being inundated with asylum-seekers is most palpable in Italy, whose southernmost islands are among the easiest places to reach for the hundreds of thousands of Muslim migrants who will not move to neighboring Muslim countries, but would prefer to live in Europe — with its generous, taxpayer-funded cradle-to-grave welfare state. (Once admitted to a single EU country, migrants are free to resettle in those with the most generous benefits, such as Sweden or Denmark, as many thousands have already done.)

Repeatedly, the pope himself has issued ringing, would-be “prophetic” condemnations of citizens who fear the consequences of admitting millions of impoverished Muslim aliens into their countries. In an extraordinarily emotive sermon at Lampedusa, the landing place of many Muslim boat people, Francis said:

These our brothers and sisters seek to leave difficult situations in order to find a little serenity and peace, they seek a better place for themselves and for their families — but they found death. How many times do those who seek this not find understanding, do not find welcome, do not find solidarity! And their voices rise up even to God!

Their voices also rise up to the microphones of the BBC and CNN. The migrants’ stories are all over European and American media, and European governments are scrambling not merely to save them from drowning but to hear their asylum pleas and arrange for them resettlement and generous government benefits. These immigrants have been seen. It seems to occur to no one that such actions invariably increase the numbers of such asylum and benefit seekers.

Whose stories will never be broadcast, will go forever unseen? The millions who suffer from the predictable side-effects of admitting millions of low-skill migrants that cling to a savagely intolerant religion into a crowded, high-tech continent with stifling socialist economies that do not produce new jobs.

Also unseen are the thousands of Christians who have fled savage Muslim persecution, who now languish in camps without access to schools or the right to work. Unlike Muslims, they have no safe refuge in the Middle East, and they cannot gain passage to Europe. These are the genuine refugees, who left their homelands not for better jobs or welfare payments, but one step ahead of the killing squads of ISIS. So far only one European country, Slovakia, has offered these Christians preferential treatment over Muslim economic migrants — and the EU and the UN have sharply condemned Slovakia for this sane and Christian policy.

In previous decades, millions of Muslims were welcomed to take low-skill jobs, while Western Europe’s economy was booming. But today the greatest problem in nations such as Spain, Italy, and Greece — each a prime landing site for Muslim immigrants — is crippling double-digit unemployment. Those migrants who do seek jobs will be competing with already hard-pressed working class Europeans, whose ancestors sacrificed, fought, and died to build up those countries, which are now being colonized by Muslims whose forebears did absolutely nothing to earn a claim on those nations. Those Europeans, and anyone who pays confiscatory European taxes, are the unseen victims of well-meaning, reckless attempts to help the needy whom we can see — the Muslim immigrants. There is no nation in Western Europe with a serious labor shortage, which means that a high percentage of today’s migrants will be tomorrow’s welfare recipients.

And some of them will be next week’s jihadists. Just this week, a French train was attacked by a Moroccan-born Muslim immigrant, and a mass slaughter was only averted by the courage of unarmed American soldiers who rushed the heavily-armed jihadist. Muslim migrants and their children, along with converts they make in their Islamist mosques, are responsible for virtually all the acts of terror committed in Europe in the last ten years. Read the stories of these Islamists, and see how many of them spent most of their lives receiving welfare paid for by hard-working European Christians and post-Christians. Such welfare is widely regarded among Islamists as “jizya,” the tribute that non-Muslims ought to be paying Muslims anyway, according to the Quran.

The savage anti-Semitism that is finishing Hitler’s work by driving out Europe’s Jews is not a survival passed along by elderly Nazis; it’s as much a Muslim import as honor-killing and female genital mutilation. The sole cause of all this violence and hatred — mass Muslim immigration — remains unseen, because Europeans are too timid and beaten down by multiculturalism and politicized Christianity to look it in the face, and call it for what it is: A slow-motion conquest. Mexico Warns Texas to Stop Refusing to Issue Illegal Alien Babies Birth Certificates

pb-110129-border1-jb.photoblog900The Mexican government is warning that Texas’ denial of birth certificates for U.S. children born here to undocumented immigrants stands to imperil the relationship between Mexico and the Lone Star State.

The concern was raised in an amicus brief filed Monday evening to lend support to immigrants parents who sued Texas after being denied birth certificates for their U.S.-born children, even after showing their “matrículas,” the ID cards issued by the Mexican consulate to undocumented immigrants.

Mexico says the practice stands in stark contrast to the historical practice among countries to accept passports or other forms of ID to issue birth certificates.

[It] not only jeopardizes their dignity and well-being, but could threaten the unique relationship between Mexico and Texas, the Mexican government said in a brief tied to a lawsuit filed against the state by Texas Civil Rights Project and Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid.

The lawsuit, the Texas Tribune reported, was filed on behalf of six U.S. citizen children and their undocumented parents, who came from Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala. Other groups since have joined the suit. (Read more from “Mexico Warns Texas Not to Refuse Its Immigrants’ Babies U.S. Birth Certificates” HERE)

Ted Cruz, Donald Trump to Team up for Rally Against Iran Deal

def94b4f-5cbf-4b7e-9441-525ef727a581Call it a public display of political affection: Sen. Ted Cruz has invited Donald Trump to Washington next month for a rally against the Iran nuclear deal.

The two Republican rivals are set to appear at an event organized by the Tea Party Patriots, the Center for Security Politics, and the Zionist Organization of America, according to the Cruz campaign.

Mort Klein, the ZOA president, said the rally has been in the works for weeks, though Trump’s inclusion is a relatively new development.

“I think it’s of great value to have a person who will likely command coverage of this rally, of this issue, like Donald Trump would be able to,” he said. “I think it’s a good thing. I don’t care if he sucks the air out of the room.”

Klein, who said the rally is tentatively set for September 9th, continued: “Maybe [Trump] will be covered more than anyone else at the rally. Fine. The issue’s all that matters to me, and getting it covered, and trying to stop this disaster for our country.” (Read more from “Ted Cruz, Donald Trump to Team up for Rally Against Iran Deal” HERE)

Pro-Jeb Plane Flies Anti-Trump Banner Across Trump’s Bama Rally and It BACKFIRES Big Time

Jeb-BushFellow 2016 Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush tried to steal Donald Trump’s thunder in Mobile, Alabama, on Friday, but the move proved to be full of hot air.

As Trump electrified the largest crowd of the presidential campaign season to date, the pro-Bush Right to Rise super-PAC launched a banner message to fly over the event on a small plane.

The message read “Trump 4 Higher Taxes, Jeb 4 Prez.”

[Here’s how social media responded:]

Man Dies From Plague in 4th Fatal Case in US This Year

D0MA67-Bubonic-pla_2653834bA Utah man in his 70s has died after contracting the plague, bringing to four the number of deaths from the disease reported in the United States this year, health officials said Thursday.

Officials are still trying to determine how the Utah person contracted the disease, but believe it might have been spread by a flea or contact with a dead animal, according to the state Department of Health.

“That’s the most common way to get it,” said JoDee Baker, an epidemiologist with the agency. “That’s probably what happened, but we’re still doing an investigation into that.”

Plague is a rare disease that is carried by rodents and spread by fleas. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 11 other cases have been reported in six states since April 1. The other three people who died were ages 16, 52 and 79 . . .

Haley said the latest patient got the disease in Utah, possibly after being in rural areas and near campgrounds. The person was hospitalized about five days after coming down with symptoms, and died in mid-August at the University of Utah’s Hospital. Clinton Likens GOP’s Views on Women to Those of Terrorists

Hillary Rodham ClintonHillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday drew parallels between terrorist organizations and the field of Republican candidates for president when it comes to their views on women, telling an Ohio audience her potential GOP rivals were pushing “out-of-date” policies.

“Now extreme views about women? We expect that from some of the terrorist groups. We expect that from people who don’t want to live in the modern world,” Clinton said.

“But it’s a little hard to take coming from Republicans who want to be the president of the United States, yet they espouse out-of-date and out-of-touch policies,” she added at a rally with 2,800 people in Cleveland’s Case Western Reserve University. “They are dead wrong for 21st century America.” (Read more from “Clinton Likens GOP’s Views on Women to Those of Terrorists” HERE)

Pro-Life Groups Demand Portrait Gallery Remove Planned Parenthood Founder Bust

margaret sangerAnti-abortion activists held a rally Thursday outside the National Portrait Gallery to demand the Washington museum remove a bust of Margaret Sanger, a controversial eugenicist who founded the organizations that later became Planned Parenthood.

The modern-day abortion provider has come under scrutiny following the release of undercover videos that allegedly show employees brokering the sale of fetal tissue. Days after widespread protests against the group, E.W. Jackson, a conservative Christian minister and Virginia lawyer, led the rally in Washington urging the removal of the Sanger bust.

“You must remove the bust!” Jackson said at the rally in front of the Smithsonian museum. He later added, “If Margaret Sanger had her way, MLK and Rosa Parks would never have been born.”

The event also was organized by conservative group ForAmerica and a group of black pastors . . .

GOP 2016 presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has publicly supported the movement to remove Sanger’s bust from the gallery. Cruz along with Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, circulated a letter to lawmakers calling the sculpture’s display “an affront broth to basic human decency and the very meaning of justice.” (Read more from “Pro-Life Groups Demand Portrait Gallery Remove Planned Parenthood Founder Bust” HERE)
