Harvard Epidemiologist Predicts Most of the World Will Be Infected by Next Year; U.S. Soldier Stationed in South Korea Tests Positive for Coronavirus; Senator ‘Appalled’ by Trump’s Classified Briefing on Coronavirus

CDC Warns Disruption to U.S. Life “May be Severe”

By Alexandria Hein. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday warned that it expects the novel coronavirus to begin spreading in the U.S. at the community level, and that “disruption to everyday life may be severe.”

Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the agency’s director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said in a press briefing on Tuesday that the time for Americans to begin preparing for a potential outbreak of the virus is now . . . “As more and more countries experience community spread, successful containment at our borders becomes harder and harder,” Messonnier said. “Ultimately, we expect we will see community spread in this country. It’s not so much a question of if this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of when this will happen, and how many people in this country will have severe illness.”

Citing the recent uptick in cases in countries with confirmed illnesses, Messonnier said health officials recognize that once the virus hits, it moves “quite rapidly,” adding that the outbreak is inching closer toward pandemic status. She explained several measures the U.S. is prepared to take should the outbreak become severe, including closing schools and hosting meetings remotely.

“I understand this whole situation may seem overwhelming and that disruption to everyday life may be severe, but these are things people need to start thinking about now,” Messonnier said. (Read more HERE)

US Soldier Tests Positive

By The Blaze. An American soldier stationed in South Korea has tested positive for COVID-19, the coronavirus, the U.S. military announced Wednesday, in what is the first confirmed case of a servicemember contracting the new disease. . .

The patient is a 23-year-old male stationed at Camp Carroll near the southeastern city of Daegu. According to a statement issued by United States Forces Korea, the soldier “is currently in self quarantine at his off-base residence.”

The command said that “health professionals are actively conducting contact tracing to determine whether any others may have been exposed,” adding, “USFK is implementing all appropriate control measures to help control the spread of COVID-19 and remains at risk level ‘high’ for USFK peninsula-wide as a prudent measure to protect the force.”

The Daily Mail reported that South Korea announced the same day that the country has 1,146 cases of COVID-19, which means it has “the biggest outbreak outside mainland China.” China has reported more than 2,700 deaths due to coronavirus with another 78,000 confirmed cases of infection.

The U.S. currently has around 28,5000 troops stationed in South Korea, as a deterrent against North Korean aggression. (Read more from “U.S. Soldier Stationed in South Korea Tests Positive for Coronavirus” HERE)

Yes, You’ll Likely Get It – Harvard Epidemiologist Predicts Most of the World Will Be Infected by Next Year

By The Atlantic. . .Coronaviruses are similar to influenza viruses in that they both contain single strands of RNA.* Four coronaviruses commonly infect humans, causing colds. These are believed to have evolved in humans to maximize their own spread—which means sickening, but not killing, people. By contrast, the two prior novel coronavirus outbreaks—SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome, named for where the first outbreak occurred)—were picked up from animals, as was H5N1. These diseases were highly fatal to humans. If there were mild or asymptomatic cases, they were extremely few. Had there been more of them, the disease would have spread widely. Ultimately, SARS and MERS each killed fewer than 1,000 people. . .

The Harvard epidemiology professor Marc Lipsitch is exacting in his diction, even for an epidemiologist. Twice in our conversation he started to say something, then paused and said, “Actually, let me start again.” So it’s striking when one of the points he wanted to get exactly right was this: “I think the likely outcome is that it will ultimately not be containable.”

Containment is the first step in responding to any outbreak. In the case of COVID-19, the possibility (however implausible) of preventing a pandemic seemed to play out in a matter of days. Starting in January, China began cordoning off progressively larger areas, radiating outward from the city of Wuhan and eventually encapsulating some 100 million people. People were barred from leaving home, and lectured by drones if they were caught outside. Nonetheless, the virus has now been found in 24 countries.

Despite the apparent ineffectiveness of such measures—relative to their inordinate social and economic cost, at least—the crackdown continues to escalate. Under political pressure to “stop” the virus, last Thursday the Chinese government announced that officials in Hubei province would be going door-to-door, testing people for fevers and looking for signs of illness, then sending all potential cases to quarantine camps. But even with the ideal containment, the virus’s spread may have been inevitable. Testing people who are already extremely sick is an imperfect strategy if people can spread the virus without even feeling bad enough to stay home from work.

Lipsitch predicts that within the coming year, some 40 to 70 percent of people around the world will be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. But, he clarifies emphatically, this does not mean that all will have severe illnesses. “It’s likely that many will have mild disease, or may be asymptomatic,” he said. As with influenza, which is often life-threatening to people with chronic health conditions and of older age, most cases pass without medical care. (Overall, about 14 percent of people with influenza have no symptoms.) Democrat ‘Appalled’ by Classified Senate Briefing on Coronavirus: ‘Should Have Been Fully Open to American People’

By Raw Story.Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) blasted the Trump administration for withholding information about coronavirus preparations from the public.

The administration gave senators a classified briefing Tuesday morning on the virus, which Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) warned Monday could turn into a potential pandemic unless President Donald Trump and his team took swift action.

WATCH: Democratic Debate Turns Into Schoolyard Screaming Match

By NY Post. The South Carolina presidential Democratic debate quickly devolved into a scrappy schoolyard screaming match on Tuesday night — all of the candidates furiously talking over each other as the CBS moderators seemed helpless to do anything about it.

CBS News moderators Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell struggled to keep the unruly seven candidates in line as they rushed to attack Bernie Sanders who they now realize is on an unstoppable march to the nomination.

At one point, all of the candidates were wildly flapping their hands and yelling over each other before former veep Joe Biden chastised their on-stage decorum.

“I guess the only way to do this is jump in and speak twice as long as you should,” Biden said as ex South Bend-mayor Pete Buttigieg went on a long sermon about how Sanders would cost Democrats the House majority, a statistic based on polling conducted by Bloomberg’s campaign. Dems Pummel Sanders on Communism, Spending at SC Debate Ahead of Key Primaries

By Fox News. Bernie Sanders faced sustained attacks from all sides in Tuesday night’s rowdy Democratic debate, as the self-described democratic socialist, now the race’s undisputed frontrunner, parried multiple claims that his sweeping plans were little more than an expensive path to a “catastrophic,” Corbyn-esque downballot rout for Democrats in November.

The forum, coming ahead of Saturday’s primary in South Carolina and next week’s pivotal Super Tuesday contests, was easily the most contentious of the primary season to date, as candidates frequently sparred with the moderators and ripped into each other on spending, foreign policy, and more. Fears have spread among the remaining candidates and establishment Democrats that Sanders, fresh off wins in several states, could soon be unstoppable.

Seconds into the event, Sanders downplayed historic-low unemployment numbers by arguing that the economy was only going well for “people like” former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg — prompting Bloomberg to quickly bring up recent reports that Russia is working to help Sanders’ campaign.

“I think that Donald Trump thinks it would be better if he’s president — I do not think so,” Bloomberg said. “Vladimir Putin thinks that Donald Trump should be president of the United States. And that’s why Russia is helping you get elected, so you’ll lose to him.”

Sanders shot back by referencing Bloomberg’s support for Chinese President Xi Jinping. Sanders, later on, also insisted that he condemned “authoritarians” and claimed that his recent praise for Fidel Castro’s literacy programs was similar to former President Barack Obama’s previous remarks — drawing a sharp rebuke from both former Vice President Joe Biden and former mayor of South Bend, Indiana Pete Buttigieg.

Trump in 2014 Said Obama Was ‘a Psycho’ Not to Immediately Cancel Flights Into the U.S. Amid Ebola Outbreak in West Africa

. . .President Donald Trump has been trying to calm the markets during a precipitous fall as world health experts have begun to conclude the spread of the virus is “inevitable,” according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control.

But when Obama was in office, Trump had a much harsher assesment of executive responsibility amid a pandemic.

When the Ebola panic was growing as cases spread in West Africa, Trump called on Obama to cancel flights coming out of the region. . .

Now facing criticism over his administration being unprepared for the pandemic and trying to offer a false sense of security to calm the markets, Trump blamed “incompetent” leaders in 2014 over the much less deadly Ebola outbreak.

WATCH: Biden Accidentally Tells South Carolina Crowd He’s a Dem Candidate ‘for the United States Senate’

Former Vice President Joe Biden made an unfortunate gaffe just days before the critical South Carolina primary, telling voters he’s a Democratic candidate for the “United States Senate.”

Biden was one of several 2020 hopefuls to attend the South Carolina Democrat Party’s First in the South Dinner, where he reportedly received the longest ovation of any of his competitors. . .

“You’re the ones who sent Barack Obama the presidency. And I have a simple proposition here: I’m here to ask you for your help,” Biden pleaded to Democratic voters. “Where I come from, you don’t go very far unless you ask. My name’s Joe Biden. I’m a Democratic candidate for the United State’s Senate. Look me over. If you like what you see, help out. If not, vote for the other Biden. Give me a look though, okay?”

Biden, a former senator, has called South Carolina is “firewall,” hoping to clinch his first primary victory after having disappointing turnouts in Iowa and New Hampshire as well as coming in at a distant second in Nevada last weekend. WATCH: Trump Responds to Weinstein Verdict by Saying Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton ‘Loved Him’; Nancy Grace Shares Disturbing Details From Weinstein Accuser

By Raw Story. President Donald Trump responded to the Harvey Weinstein trial verdict by saying Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton “loved” the disgraced movie producer who was convicted of rape and sexual assault Monday. . .

“So I was never a fan of Harvey Weinstein, as you know – in fact he said he was going to work hard to defeat me in the election. How did that work out, by the way, I’m trying to figure that out,” Trump told a reporter. . .

“I knew him because he was in New York. Not a person I liked. I will say the people that liked him were the Democrats. Michelle Obama loved him. Loved him. Hillary Clinton loved him. And he gave tremendous money to the Democrats and my question is, will the Democrats be asking for that money back?”

Nancy Grace Shares Disturbing Details From Weinstein Accuser: ‘When You Hear This, You Will Cringe’

By Fox News. Longtime legal analyst and former prosecutor Nancy Grace blamed the Hollywood community Monday for protecting disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein after he was found guilty by a Manhattan jury of rape and sexual assault.

“Everybody knew,” said Grace on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.” of Weinstein’s deviant behavior around women. “Everybody knew within the industry.” . . .

Grace noted that Weinstein still faces charges in Los Angeles, where authorities allege he raped one woman and sexually assaulted another on back-to-back nights during Oscars week in 2013.

“When you hear this, you will cringe,” Grace warned. “In one of those [Los Angeles] cases, the woman tried to show him — according to her — pictures of her children, her family, begging him to stop, but he didn’t. And now, he will be tried for that as well out there.”

The New York trial was the first criminal case to arise from a barrage of allegations against Weinstein from more than 90 women, including actresses Gwyneth Paltrow, Salma Hayek, Ashley Judd, Uma Thurman and Mira Sorvino. Most of those cases were too old to prosecute. (Read more from “Nancy Grace Shares Disturbing Details From Weinstein Accuser: ‘When You Hear This, You Will Cringe'” HERE)

Duffy, the Singer of the 2008 Hit “Mercy,” Said She Was Raped, Drugged, and Held Captive for Days

Duffy, the Welsh singer known for her 2008 hit “Mercy,” spoke out Tuesday for the first time in years to tell fans her silence came after being raped, drugged, and held captive for days.

“Many of you wonder what happened to me, where did I disappear to and why,” Duffy wrote. “The truth is, and please trust me I am ok and safe now, I was raped and drugged and held captive over some days.”

Duffy, whose full name is Aimee Duffy, took a hiatus from the music industry in 2011 after her second album, Endlessly, fared poorly on the charts and with sales. In the years since then, she appeared in a few films but did not release another album and hadn’t posted on Instagram since October 2017, according to Wales Online.

You can only imagine the amount of times I thought about writing this. The way I would write it, how I would feel thereafter. Well, not entirely sure why now is the right time, and what it is that feels exciting and liberating for me to talk. I cannot explain it. Many of you wonder what happened to me, where did I disappear to and why. A journalist contacted me, he found a way to reach me and I told him everything this past summer. He was kind and it felt so amazing to finally speak. The truth is, and please trust me I am ok and safe now, I was raped and drugged and held captive over some days. Of course I survived. The recovery took time. There’s no light way to say it. But I can tell you in the last decade, the thousands and thousands of days I committed to wanting to feel the sunshine in my heart again, the sun does now shine. You wonder why I did not choose to use my voice to express my pain? I did not want to show the world the sadness in my eyes. I asked myself, how can I sing from the heart if it is broken? And slowly it unbroke. In the following weeks I will be posting a spoken interview. If you have any questions I would like to answer them, in the spoken interview, if I can. I have a sacred love and sincere appreciation for your kindness over the years. You have been friends. I want to thank you for that x Duffy Please respect this is a gentle move for me to make, for myself, and I do not want any intrusion to my family. Please support me to make this a positive experience.

Four Babies in NYC Have Recently Gotten Herpes From Controversial Jewish Circumcision Ritual

A seldom-practiced religious ritual has led to a cluster of herpes cases among infants, New York City health officials said Sunday. At least four infants have contracted the potentially fatal viral disease since last September, all after undergoing a circumcision during which the circumciser placed their mouth on the genital wound.

Last September, health officials issued a public health alert about the practice, known as metzitzah b’peh, following a case of neonatal herpes reported to the New York City Health Department. On Sunday, the Wall Street Journal reported there have been three more cases documented in NYC since December.

Jewish circumcision nowadays rarely involves any oral contact between the baby’s genitals and the circumciser, or mohel, and is actively discouraged by the community at large. But the ancient practice of suction—said to cleanse the wound—is still performed within some ultra-orthodox communities. Man Arrested After Trying to Blow up Car in Pentagon Parking Lot

A 19-year-old man from Arkansas has been charged with trying to blow up a car in the Pentagon parking lot Monday morning.

The charges, announced Tuesday afternoon, follow an extensive search yesterday involving numerous law enforcement agencies, including Arlington County Police, that resulted in the man being arrested in Arlington National Cemetery.

Federal prosecutors say the suspect, Matthew Richardson, tried to blow up a Land Rover, parked in the Pentagon North Parking lot, by sticking a piece of fabric in the gas tank and lighting it on fire. The vehicle did not explode and the suspect took off running after being confronted by a Pentagon police officer. . .

Arlington officers were dispatched to the area around Arlington National Cemetery around 11 a.m. to look for a man who, according to initial reports, might have intended to light himself on fire. They were joined by Pentagon police, Fort Myer police and U.S. Park Police in searching for the man. . .

Richardson was arrested this past weekend in Arlington and charged with felony assault on a law enforcement officer, according to prosecutors. Savage said he was arrested by a different police agency, not Arlington County Police. Richardson was previously arrested on theft charges in Arkansas in November. 1999: Bloomberg Bragged About Scoring 16-Year-Old Daughter Dates in China

Democrat presidential hopeful Mike Bloomberg once bragged about scoring his 16-year-old daughter dates in multiple Chinese cities while visiting the country on business.

The former New York City mayor, who is under fire for helping suppress news reports critical of China’s communist regime, made the awkward comments while hobnobbing with young “Wall Street traders” at a Boston College alumni dinner in 1999, according to Wired magazine profile.

“My daughter is tall and busty and blonde,” Michael Bloomberg is telling a table of Boston College graduates. “We went to China together. And what’s a 16-year-old going to do on a business trip?” He pops another carefully buttered piece of bread in his mouth. “So I got her dates in every city in China.” Remembering that I’m also at the table, he glares in my direction. “That’s off the record!” he barks. It’s typical Mike Bloomberg, wanting to have it both ways: imperious man of the people, coarse billionaire, earthy business leader, accessible control freak.

At the time of the dinner, Bloomberg was first emerging on the political stage as a contender to replace then-term limited New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Even though Bloomberg would succeed in his quest for the mayoralty, eventually serving three terms in city hall, his 1999 comments foreshadowed a businesslike approach to the U.S.-China relationship.

As mayor, Bloomberg often championed policies that seemed copied right out of Beijing’s playbook. For instance, the Bloomberg administration in 2012 sought to ban the use of baby formula in hospitals across New York City, arguing breast feeding was a better alternative. The policy, like many of Bloomberg’s other health initiatives, was modeled off steps the Chinese regime took to promote breast feeding after its food safety protocols were called into question by a 2008 scandal involving infant formula being adulterated with melamine—a compound used when manufacturing plastic. Fact Check: No, Trump Did Not ‘Fire’ Pandemic Specialist or ‘Defund’ CDC

CLAIM: President Trump “fired” the government’s pandemic specialist, and “defunded” the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

VERDICT: Mostly false. The specialist was not fired; he quit. Some CDC cuts were proposed, but not implemented.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg claimed at the Democrat debate in Charleston, South Carolina, on Tuesday night that President Donald Trump had “fired” the government’s pandemic expert and “defunded” the Centers for Disease Control:

One of the great problems today, you read about the virus, what’s really happening here is the president fired the pandemic specialist in this country two years ago, so there’e nobody here to figure out what the hell we should be doing. [Applause] And he’s defunded Centers for Disease Control, CDC so we don’t have the organization we need.

In reality, the pandemic expert — Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer — left the National Security Council (NSC) voluntarily after then-National Security Advisor John Bolton was appointed. (Read more from “Fact Check: No, Trump Did Not ‘Fire’ Pandemic Specialist or ‘Defund’ CDC” HERE)
