A leading psychiatrist has claimed that reciting a 2,000-year-old biblical prayer may physically reshape the human brain.
Dr Daniel Amen was a recent guest on the Mature Me podcast, hosted by Florida pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr, where he detailed the science behind saying the Lord’s Prayer.
The Lord’s Prayer, also known as the Our Father, is a foundational Christian prayer that, according to the Bible, Jesus taught his disciples when they asked him how to pray.
Amen, who is a devout Christian, broke down the prayer line-by-line, starting with the verse: ‘Our Father, in heaven, hallowed be your name.’
‘Right away, it activates your prefrontal cortex,’ he said, explaining that the opening lines of the prayer may activate the brain’s attachment systems and help shift the mind out of a threat response into a calmer state associated with safety and emotional stability.
