Leader Of One Of World’s Most Powerful Central Banks Announces Early Resignation Amid Turmoil
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde announced Thursday that she will step down Feb. 7, 2027, nearly nine months before her term was due to end.
Lagarde announced her departure through a video statement on X, later saying she is leaving the ECB “because I want to have the freedom of speech, the freedom of expression, and the freedom to engage on matters that are not monetary policy matters.”

While steering monetary policy across 21 member nations, The Economist reported that bond yields have soared following a failure to establish credible budget plans, leaving the benchmarks of countries like Germany as high as during the worst of the early 2010s euro-zone crisis.

The Economist also cited Lagarde’s early embrace of climate-conscious policies, which was quickly overtaken by the COVID-19 pandemic and government-mandated lockdowns. The panic led investors to dump bonds of high-debt nations like Italy and rush into safe German debt, opening a massive gap in borrowing costs across Europe. At first, Lagarde warned it wasn’t the ECB’s job to “close spreads” for economically troubled governments, but as financial panic threatened to tear the eurozone apart, she gave in — unleashing a massive bond-buying spree that once again transformed the central bank into the continent’s ultimate financial backstop.
