Rise of the Robots Will Eliminate More Than 5 Million Jobs

Over five million jobs will be lost by 2020 as a result of developments in genetics, artificial intelligence, robotics and other technological change, according to World Economic Forum research.

About 7 million jobs will be lost and 2 million gained as a result of technological change in 15 major developed and emerging economies, WEF founder Klaus Schwab and managing board member Richard Samans said in “The Future of Jobs.” The findings are taken from a survey of 15 economies covering about 1.9 billion workers, or about 65 percent of the world’s total workforce.

The blurred lines between physical, digital and biological spheres amount to a Fourth Industrial Revolution, according to the WEF, which will address the idea as the idea at its annual meeting of policy makers, academics and economists in Davos, Switzerland. It’s already a hot topic thanks in part to books such as ‘The Second Machine Age’ and ‘The Rise of The Robots,’ while Bank of England Chief Economist Andy Haldane has warned that the millions of jobs at risk from automation are creating issues officials need to address.

“To prevent a worst-case scenario — technological change accompanied by talent shortages, mass unemployment and growing inequality — reskilling and upskilling of today’s workers will be critical,” the authors said. (Read more from “Rise of the Robots Will Eliminate More Than 5 Million Jobs” HERE)

High doses of cocaine can cause the brain to eat itself, research suggests.

A mouse study found that the drug can trigger out-of-control ”autophagy” – a process by which cells literally digest themselves.

When it is properly regulated, autophagy provides a valuable clean-up service – getting rid of unwanted debris that is dissolved away by enzymes within cell ”pockets”.

Dr Prasun Guha, from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the US – who led the research published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, said: ”A cell is like a household that is constantly generating trash.

”Autophagy is the housekeeper that takes out the trash – it’s usually a good thing. Martin Luther King Day Protest Blocks Traffic on the Bay Bridge

Protesters marching on Martin Luther King Jr. Day blocked traffic on the Bay Bridge after earlier interrupting traffic on an Interstate Highway 80 off-ramp in Emeryville, according to the California Highway Patrol . . .

All westbound lanes of the bridge reopened about 90 minutes after protesters shut down all lanes just east of Treasure Island Monday afternoon. Traffic was backed up for miles.

About 10 of the protesters chained cars together in a row to stop traffic on the bridge, police said. The demonstrators jumped out of vehicles and started marching and chanting. Others sat down in the lanes. The protesters, about two dozen of them, were eventually taken away by CHP officers to be arrested.

All 25 protesters arrested were booked into the San Francisco County Jail on misdemeanor charges of false imprisonment, public nuisance, unlawful assembly and obstructing free passage, according to the CHP.

Members of protest groups Black Seed and the Black Queer Liberation Collective took responsibility for the protest in a statement, citing recent police shootings. “We are here to move towards an increase in the health and wellbeing of all Black people in Oakland & San Francisco,” the groups wrote in a statement. Trump Just Hinted at His Potential Vice President Pick – Some Conservatives Will Be LIVID

By Jack Davis. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump stirred the waters Saturday by suggesting that former Sen. Scott Brown would make a “very good” vice president.

Brown was the GOP’s choice to fill the U.S. Senate seat for Massachusetts that opened with the death of Sen. Ted Kennedy in 2009. He won a special election in 2010 but then lost to Elizabeth Warren in 2012. Brown moved to New Hampshire where in 2014 he challenged Democrat Sen. Jeanne Shaheen but lost in a close election.

Talk of the vice presidential spot began when, during a Portsmouth, New Hampshire., rally Brown was hosting, Trump asked Brown whether he would run again for office.

A member of the audience proposed a Trump-Brown ticket for the GOP in 2016.

“Vice president – hey, that sounds like it could, hey, hey, very good,” Trump responded.

Donald Trump Ramps up Attacks on Ted Cruz, Says ‘He’s a Nasty Guy’

By Jonh Santucci. With two weeks left before voters in Iowa cast the very first votes in the 2016 presidential election, Republican front-runner Donald Trump is turning up the heat on his fiercest rival in the Hawkeye State -– Sen. Ted Cruz.

“I don’t think Ted Cruz has a great chance, to be honest with you,” Trump told ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos in an interview on “This Week” Sunday. “Look, the truth is, he’s a nasty guy. He was so nice to me. I mean, I knew it. I was watching. I kept saying, ‘Come on Ted. Let’s go, okay.’ But he’s a nasty guy. Nobody likes him. Nobody in Congress likes him. Nobody likes him anywhere once they get to know him. He’s a very –- he’s got an edge that’s not good. You can’t make deals with people like that and it’s not a good thing. It’s not a good thing for the country. Very nasty guy.”

On the campaign trail, Trump is now questioning the freshmen Texas senator for a loan, first reported by The New York Times, that Cruz took out from Goldman Sachs during his 2012 Senate run that he failed to disclose in federal campaign finance documents. Three Americans Reportedly Kidnapped in Baghdad

By Abigail Williams and Elisha Fieldstadt. The U.S. State Department was working Sunday to locate three Americans in Iraq after a report that they had been kidnapped in Baghdad.

Dubai-based news service Al Arabiya reported that three Americans had been kidnapped by “militias” in the Iraqi capital. The Arab news agency cited their own sources.

U.S. officials said they were looking into it.

“We are aware of reports that American citizens are missing in Iraq,” said State Department spokesman John Kirby. “We are working with the full cooperation of the Iraqi authorities to locate and recover the individuals. Beloved American Missionary Among 28 Killed in Al Qaeda Attack

By CNN Wire. An American who died in a terror attack in Burkina Faso moved halfway across the world with his wife to run an orphanage and women’s crisis center.

Michael James Riddering was one of 28 people killed after terrorists opened fire Friday night at a cafe in the capital, Ouagadougou.

The al Qaeda-linked militants then raided a luxury hotel across the street, shooting some and taking others hostage in an overnight siege that lasted hours.

Sheltering Wings, a missionary group that supports Riddering’s orphanage, provided a detailed account of his ordeal. It said the Florida resident and his wife, Amy Riddering, worked at the orphanage in Yako, 115 kilometers (70 miles) from the capital. Cruz: We Will Accept Refugees as Long As… [+video]

“If I’m elected president, we will not let in refugees from countries controlled by ISIS or Al Qaida,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said at Thursday’s night’s debate in South Carolina.

Although Cruz was the first candidate to be asked about refugees, all of the candidates weighed in, and their responses are included below.

Cruz said he understands why Donald Trump called for a ban on all Muslim immigrants “until we can figure out what’s going on,” as Trump put it.

“You know, I understand why Donald made the comments he did, and I understand why Americans are feeling frustrated and scared and angry when we have a president who refuses to acknowledge the threat we face and even worse, who acts as an apologist for radical Islamic terrorism” . . .

“If I’m elected president, we will not let in refugees from countries controlled by ISIS or Al Qaida. When it comes to ISIS, we will not weaken them, we will not degrade them, we will utterly and completely destroy ISIS,” Cruz concluded. This Is Google’s Top Search (Hint: It’s About Hillary Clinton)

By Hadas Gold. Two of the top searched questions on Google for Hillary Clinton are likely not about the themes her campaign hopes to highlight.

“Will Hillary Clinton get prosecuted?” is most searched question on Google ahead of the Democratic debate on Sunday night. “Will Hillary Clinton win the nomination?” is second and “What did Hillary Clinton do that is illegal?” is the third.

Many ‘Lost’ Voters Say They Have Found Their Candidate in Trump

Ted Wade hasn’t cared about politics enough to cast a vote in a U.S. presidential election for almost a quarter of a century, back when he supported Ross Perot’s independent candidacy in 1992.

But Republican Donald Trump’s 2016 White House bid has motivated Wade to get involved and he plans to support the real estate mogul in Nevada’s nominating caucus next month. Trump is a “non-politician” who can fix the “chaos” in Washington, he says.

About one in 10 Americans who plan to cast a vote this election will do so for the first time in years, if ever, and Trump holds a decided edge with them, according to polling by Reuters/Ipsos.

These voters offer Trump a pool of voters who could be decisive either in the Republican primaries or a general election. They could be crucial for Trump in early-voting states such as Iowa and South Carolina, where his nearest rival, Senator Ted Cruz, is putting pressure on Trump and enjoys a strong base of support with more traditionally conservative voters.

Yes, Hillary’s Still the Inevitable Democratic Nominee

By David Catanese. The Associated Press has just called the Granite State Democratic primary for Bernie Sanders – and it’s a 15-point rout. It’s the second loss for Hillary Clinton in the presidential nominating contest after she narrowly dropped the Iowa caucuses to Sanders seven days prior.

Sanders’ crowd is beside themselves. The commentators on cable news are fanning doomsday scenarios. There are calls for a Clinton campaign leadership shake-up not only from talking heads, but from longtime family loyalists as well. Is it happening again? Could Clinton be upended in the Democratic primary for the second time in eight years?

This scenario is hypothetical. But given the polling that’s dribbled out over the last week, it now looks far from implausible. Sanders appears to be padding a lead in New Hampshire while beginning to threaten Clinton in Iowa – two polls even showed him tracking narrowly ahead in the first caucus state. The Vermont senator is also closing the national gap, slicing Clinton’s advantage to just 7 points in a new CBS/New York Times survey.

So if Clinton drops the first pair of early states to Sanders, is she cooked?

NBC’s Todd to Hillary Clinton: ‘43% of Likely Democratic Caucus Goers Identify as Socialist’

Here is the exchange Todd and Clinton had about the result that indicated 43 percent of likely Democratic caucus goers described themselves as “socialist:”

Chuck Todd: “You know, another problem you may be having in Iowa is that you don’t ideologically fit. This was in the Des Moines Register poll this week: 43 percent of likely Democratic caucus goers identify as socialist. Only 38 percent of likely Democratic caucus goers identified themselves as a capitalist. You, in the last debate, said you were a capitalist. Bernie Sanders calls himself a Democratic socialist. If you don`t win Iowa, do you think that`s the reason?

Hillary Clinton: “Oh, I don’t know how people take all this information, but I support a free market economy. I support the competitiveness that has created the greatest economic engine in the history of the world. What I’m worried about is that it’s not continuing to do what it used to do, which is to give the vast majority of Americans the chance to get ahead and stay ahead.

Rand Paul Supporters Just Sent Him a Major Warning: ‘Don’t Skip…’

With the next Republican presidential primary debate around the corner, Rand Paul’s supporters are nervous he will hurt his chances by boycotting that event, as he did the last one, if he again doesn’t qualify for the main stage.

“Skipping the undercard debate, he got a lot of free press doing that, but I think it only works once,” State Rep. Keith Ammon, R-New Boston, told the Washington Examiner shortly before Paul took the stage at a town hall in Ammon’s district.

Ammon and his colleague, Rep. Eric Eastman, R-Nashua, both endorsed Paul early and expressed confident in his ground operation in New Hampshire. But the two state legislators suggested that skipping the next GOP debate, the final one before voting kicks off with the Iowa caucuses, could backfire for the already low-polling candidate.

Paul wouldn’t be rewarded with “the same attention” if he pulls the move a second time around, Ammon said.

Indeed, it would be difficult for the senator to draw a similar amount of publicity for the same stunt. After Paul announced his decision to skip the undercard debate, he was invited to appear on “The Dr. Oz Show,” “The Daily Show” and other cable news and talk radio programs.
