Marion County Circuit Judge Vance Day, a former chairman of the Oregon Republican Party, took steps Thursday to create a legal defense fund in an apparent response to his decision not to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies.
Day took action because of what he described as “deeply-held religious beliefs,” KGW reported.
“It’s an exercise of his religious freedom rights under the First Amendment,” Day spokesman Patrick Korten told the news station.
In recent months, Day has not performed any marriage ceremonies, KGW reported. His courtroom is in Salem . . .
Day noted in an affidavit signed Aug. 19 that he was seeking to establish the fund to defray legal expenses in connection with inquiries by the Oregon Commission on Judicial Fitness and Disability involving allegations of violations of the Oregon Code of Judicial Conduct and the Oregon Constitution. A new assault rifle being manufactured in central Florida has drawn fire after the gunmaker branded it the “Crusader” and said it was designed “to never be used by Muslim terrorists.”
Spike’s Tactical in Apopka etched its new $1,395 AR-15 with a Bible verse that says “Blessed be the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle,” MyFoxOrlando reported.
Company spokesman Ben Thomas, a former Navy SEAL, said the scripture is something of an insurance policy to keep it out of the hands of terrorists. The idea came to him during the weapon’s development. At the time, the U.S. government was preparing to arm rebel groups in Syria . . .
The gun went on sale this week and was quickly denounced by the Council on American-Islamic Relations of Florida, according to MyFoxOrlando.
“Sadly, this manufacturer’s fancy new gun won’t do anything to stop the real threat in America: the escalating problem of gun violence,” the council told the station. “This is just another shameful marketing ploy intended to profit from the promotion of hatred, division, and violence.” (Read more from “Florida Gunmaker Produces Assault Rifle ‘Never to Be Used by Muslim Terrorists'” HERE)

A federal appeals court has ruled that an illegal immigrant and convicted felon can’t be deported back to Mexico because he identifies as a transgender woman, which leaves him vulnerable to torture back in his home country.
Edin Carey Avendano-Hernandez was born male in Mexico, and claims to have been raped by his brothers and suffered other torments. In 2000, he illegally entered the U.S. and took up residence in Fresno, California. Avendano-Hernandez also started taking female hormones and began living openly as a woman in 2005. In 2006, he committed two separate drunk driving offenses, the second of which injured two people and resulted in a felony conviction. After serving a year in jail, he was deported back to Mexico in 2007.
Back in Mexico, Avendano-Hernandez claims to have been subjected to more harassment from family and neighbors and to have been raped by members of the Mexican army. He illegally entered the U.S. again and, after being arrested, petitioned for sanctuary in the U.S. under the U.N. Convention Against Torture (CAT), arguing that deporting him would violate the CAT because he would more likely than not experience torture at the hands of Mexican authorities.
An immigration judge and the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) both rejected Avendano-Hernandez’s arguments on the grounds that he had committed a serious crime (felony drunk driving) and was not likely to face official torture.
Now, a three-judge panel on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals says Avendano-Hernandez must be allowed to stay in the U.S., because he “more likely than not” will be tortured if returned to Mexico. While Donald Trump continues to devour the lion’s share of Republican presidential primary coverage, polling results have charted impressive gains for a number of other candidates.
As CNN reported this week, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson has more than tripled his favorability rating since his performance in the first primary debate. In a recent Monmouth University poll, Carson is positioned firmly in second place.
Though he still trails Trump by more than 10 points, he is ahead of the poll’s third-place finishers – Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz – by a double-digit margin. Analyzing Carson’s gains in a panel discussion on The Five, Fox News contributor Geraldo Rivera ruffled some feathers by chalking the black candidate’s success up to Republican voters struggling with white guilt.

Bodyguard Keith Schiller gives new meaning to being Donald Trump’s right-hand man.
The towering head of Trump’s personal security team got off a spinning right cross to the head of a protester outside Trump Tower on Thursday in a scuffle that’s become the latest flash point in the slugfest between Latinos and the billionaire presidential candidate.
The melee, caught on camera, led to news coverage of the emotional fallout of Trump’s comments about Mexican immigrants. But the incident also revealed a reality of U.S. presidential campaigns: Candidates are largely responsible for their own protection at this early stage in the election cycle.
Schiller has become the face, and knuckles, of that reality. Two weeks ago, Schiller stepped between his boss and Univision anchor Jorge Ramos during a news conference and physically ejected the influential journalist after Trump grew irritated by Ramos’s questioning.
The tactics of Trump’s team have begun to draw scrutiny among the professionals who, if the brash New Yorker continues to lead the GOP field, could take over his security detail in a few months. (Read more from “Trump Security Detail Makes Headlines, Just Like the Candidate” HERE)

Friday in Cleveland, OH at a “Justice Or Else!” rally for “10.10.15,” the 20th anniversary of The Million Man March gathering being held in Washington, D.C. on October 10, 2015, Louis Farrakhan said for real racial justice to occur the way God intended the whole American system “has to be taken down” as evidenced by President Barack Obama being elected and still not being able to change anything.
Farrakhan discussed the case in Cleveland on November 29, 2012 after a 25-minute high speed car chase, 13 police officers fired 137 rounds into the car killing Melissa Williams and the driver Timothy Russell.
Farrakhan said, “No man has the right to take your life and then deny you due process for the address of your grievances. I watched that judge with Melissa Williams Mr. Russell. Shot at a vehicle a 137 times. That’s a hell of a lot of shooting. Now these people are supposed to be marksmen. Any of you that hunt when you go to hunt a deer, when you get him in your site you know exactly where to put the bullet so it drops him. And as he’s bleeding out you catch him, go get it because you are going to eat him. But if you shot him a 137 times ant no sense in trying to eat that one.” (Read more from “Nation of Islam Leader: The American System Must Be Taken Down” HERE)

Contrast the unprincipled two-faced behavior of Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) with regards to the Iran treaty to the principled stand of a true statesman. Sitting in for Sean Hannity, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), in a heartfelt monologue against the Iran deal, promised to not run for re-election if House leaders bring his resolution to the floor next week, requiring that the Iran deal be treated as a treaty and subjecting it to the 67-vote threshold in the Senate.
Following his recent trip to Egypt and seeing such a beleaguered nation stand up to the Muslim Brotherhood and radical Islam, Gohmert said he was racking his brains as to what he can do to get leadership to listen.
“I know the Republican leaders want me out of Congress; they consider me a pain in the rear – to put it mildly,” said Gohmert to Hannity listeners.
“I give you my word, I will not run for re-election.”
“You want me out this is your best shot, just follow the Constitution.”
This is not a hollow threat. Boehner hates Gohmert so badly, if there’s anything that would prompt him to actually fight the Iran deal in a meaningful way it would be the opportunity to get rid of Gohmert.
The question is if Boehner loves the country as much as he hates Gohmert. (For more from the author of “Louie Gohmert Chooses Country’s Security Over Job Security” please click HERE)
Renewed calls for more restrictive gun laws, following a succession of fatal shootings in the United States, immediately appear to be generating a boost for the gun industry.
Newly released August records show that the FBI posted 1.7 million background checks required of gun purchasers at federally licensed dealers, the highest number recorded in any August since gun checks began in 1998. The numbers follow new monthly highs for June (1.5 million) and July (1.6 million), a period which spans a series of deadly gun attacks — from Charleston to Roanoke — and proposals for additional firearm legislation.
While the FBI does not track actual gun sales, as multiple firearms can be included in a transaction by a single buyer, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System’s numbers are an indicator of a market upswing in the face of growing anxiety about access to guns.
“Whenever there is a call for gun control, sales increase,” said Larry Keane, general counsel for the firearm industry trade association National Shooting Sports Foundation. “Unfortunately, this is a pattern that repeats itself.”
The summer trend is not on par with the panic buying boom that followed the 2012 Newtown massacre, which jump-started state and federal campaigns for a host of new firearm measures. During the months that followed the Connecticut attack, which featured new calls for an assault weapons ban and expanded background checks, apprehensive gun buyers emptied the shelves of dealers across the country. Yet, the recent uptick represents a similar buying pattern that dates to the uneasy period before 1994 adoption of the assault weapons ban. (That ban expired in 2004.) “I play to people’s fantasies,” Donald Trump wrote in his 1987 memoir, The Art of the Deal. “I call it truthful hyperbole,” he explained. “It’s an innocent form of exaggeration — and a very effective form of promotion.”
The Bible calls this kind of behavior “lying.” Why am I bringing up the Bible? Well, it’s The Donald’s favorite book.
Or so he says. That claim might be part of that truthful hyperbole that serves as promotion for the reality TV star seeking the presidency of the United States.
Trump is a lot of things, but stupid isn’t one of them. He clearly determined that the only way to win the Republican nomination was through an appeal to the conservative evangelical vote. Despite his multiple divorces and remarriages, longtime support for abortion rights (until recently) and prideful self-aggrandizement, Trump has emerged as the favored candidate of evangelical voters.
An Aug. 16 Fox News Poll reported that “the top favorites among the white evangelical Christians are Trump (27%), Carson (14%), Cruz (12%), Bush (10%) and Huckabee (9%).” In South Carolina, 33% of evangelical Christians back Trump, according to a recent Monmouth University survey. His closest rival was retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson at 18%. Trump has been praised by Jerry Falwell Jr. as “one of the greatest visionaries of our time” and lauded by Franklin Graham for “shaking up” the political process. Pope Francis’ imminent visit to America is being spun by secular media as a political bonus for Democrats. No one, it seems, expects the pope to deliver a speech prophetically denouncing the human organ trafficking of Planned Parenthood, the grave threats to religious liberty in America, or even the ethnic cleansing of Christians from the Middle East.
Instead, we are told that Pope Francis will emphasize his areas of agreement with the left over climate change, inequality, and immigration. If any congressmen are squirming in their seats, it is expected, it will be those prolife Catholic Republicans who differ with the pope on these latter issues.
As a Catholic, I still hold out hope that the pope will disappoint expectations, and speak up on subjects that are life-and-death, doctrinally clear, and rooted in genuine Catholic morality — rather than parroting the agenda of the secular, globalist left. But the actions of U.S. bishops in recent weeks are making it harder to hold on to that hope. Most sickening was the statement where Francis’ handpicked Archbishop Blaise Cupich of Chicago drew a moral equivalency between the butchery at Planned Parenthood and the inconveniences faced by illegal aliens, Medicaid recipients, and convicted killers. Cupich brazenly cloaked himself in the same “seamless garment” that his predecessor Cardinal Joseph Bernardin had crafted as a bulletproof vest for pro-abortion Catholic Democrats.
But it’s not just the bleeding edge of the Catholic left that feeds the secular media narrative. The widely-respected Abp. Charles Chaput, seen by many as the most conservative major Catholic prelate, recently delivered a speech on immigration that tracks exactly with the positions of the Democratic Party and radical immigrant activists groups such as La Raza. Chaput defended birthright citizenship for children of illegals, opposed deportations, and even condemned attempts to refine our legal immigration criteria to focus on skilled immigrants, rather than relatives of recently amnestied illegals. TV networks and Democratic candidates will eagerly feed on his remarks, in their ongoing effort to portray conservative Catholics as “dissenters” from “Catholic social teaching,” no purer in their religious allegiance than those who “dissent” from the Church’s teaching on selling baby limbs in medical waste coolers.
This narrative is entirely fictitious. Abp. Chaput’s remarks do not reflect real Catholic teaching on immigration — not the text of the current Catechism, nor the historic practice of Catholic countries, including the Papal States, on immigration. (To how many Muslims has the Vatican granted citizenship?) No more do Pope Francis’ speculations on the causes of inequality, or the vagaries of earth’s climate, have the slightest guarantee of religious authority. On all of these matters, popes and bishops are merely playing pundits, speaking beyond their proper authority and undermining it in the process.
