This week marks the anniversary of a landmark achievement in human history. On July 16, 1969, astronauts Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins left Earth in Apollo 11. A few days later on July 20, man took his first steps on the moon.
Frankly, we’re still amazed at how they pulled it off. The astronauts up in space and the NASA technicians on the ground overcame seemingly impossible obstacles, and were forced to contend with unforeseen situations such as broken equipment, excess trash and unrelenting flatulence (seriously).
Check out these 10 strange-but-true facts related to the Apollo 11 mission:
1. Neil Armstrong’s famous quote was incorrectly transmitted. Instead of the saying, “That’s one small step for man,” the astronaut claims he said, “That’s one small step for a man.” As he once clarified to a biographer: “I think that reasonable people will realize that I didn’t intentionally make an inane statement and that certainly the ‘a’ was intended, because that’s the only way the statement makes any sense.”

‘What has happened is terrible, so many victims, that’s a horrible thing,’ de Jonge wrote in a statement translated from Dutch.’
De Jonge told the Netherlands station RTV Oost that despite his second brush with death, he plans to take another Malaysia Airlines plane this week and has no concerns for his safety.

Those grievances range from (but are not limited to) Benghazi, the IRS scandal, the “targeting” of conservative filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza, illegal immigration, the Hobby Lobby Supreme Court case, the treatment of war veterans, the chaos in Iraq and deep reservations about President Obama.
“Five years ago, I stated that Obama would take the country apart piece-by-piece, that he would cause a civil war in this country,” Voight read on Saturday in a statement on Mike Huckabee’s Fox News show. “In hindsight we can see how many things have come to pass.”

Some of the unaccompanied illegal immigrant children who’ve recently entered the country could be coming to your community and you’d never know.
The White House is not informing governors or members of Congress when or where they are placing the children, because they deem the children’s privacy rights to be more important than your right to know where your tax dollars are going, or any public safety or health concern you might have.
During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said:
“The public does have a right to know what’s happening… [but] at the same time, there are privacy rights that are included in the law that this administration is committed to enforcing and following.”
Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman – a Republican – recently discovered that 200 illegal immigrant children were sent to his state “without warning.” Oklahoma’s Republican Gov. Mary Fallin was “alerted through the media” about 600 children coming to a military installation in her state.

Dem Lawmaker: Obama Has Promised To ‘Act Shortly’ By Granting Amnesty To Many Illegals
By Brendan Bordelon.
Democratic lawmaker Tony Cardenas revealed that President Barack Obama promised the Congressional Hispanic Caucus on Wednesday he will “act shortly” to bypass Congress and grant some form of amnesty to many illegal immigrants.
Cardenas spoke with MSNBC’s Jose Diaz-Balart on Thursday about a meeting the Hispanic Caucus had with the president on Wednesday concerning the growing border crisis and comprehensive immigration reform.
The California congressman claimed that Obama committed to broad executive action on immigration reform — including granting legal status to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants without congressional approval — and that such action will come “shortly.”
“It’s important to understand that the president made it very clear to the Hispanic Caucus yesterday that Congress is not acting,” Cardenas explained. “He let Speaker Boehner know many, many months ago to please go ahead and do something. He has not done it. And now’s the time for the president to act, and the president’s going to act shortly.”

The Texas Republican is pushing a bill that would end the de facto amnesty Barack Obama extended in 2012 to illegals who arrived in the U.S. as minors.
While Obama’s unilateral move resulted in deferred action in the case of illegals under a certain age who crossed the border as a child and maintained certain requirements while living in the U.S., Cruz contended that this policy has attracted the tens of thousands of Central American minors currently flooding the Mexican border.
In his response, Reid suggested that the executive order automatically legitimized these illegals, making them impervious to deportation efforts.
Instead of addressing the humanitarian crisis on the border, the junior Senator from TX wants to deport the DREAMers already here. Bad idea.

The U.S. Department of Justice has sent a member of its Community Relations Service team to investigate a Nebraska parade float that criticized President Obama.
A Fourth of July parade float featured at the annual Independence Day parade in Norfolk sparked criticism when it depicted a zombie-like figure resembling Mr. Obama standing outside an outhouse, which was labeled the “Obama Presidential Library.”
The Nebraska Democratic Party called the float one of the “worst shows of racism and disrespect for the office of the presidency that Nebraska has ever seen.”

Holder sees ‘racial animus’ in opposition
By Justin Sink.
Attorney General Eric Holder said Sunday he and President Obama have been targets of “a racial animus” by some of the administration’s political opponents.
“There’s a certain level of vehemence, it seems to me, that’s directed at me [and] directed at the president,” Holder told ABC. “You know, people talking about taking their country back. … There’s a certain racial component to this for some people. I don’t think this is the thing that is a main driver, but for some there’s a racial animus.”
Holder said the nation is in “a fundamentally better place than we were 50 years ago.”
“We’ve made lots of progress,” he said. “I sit here as the first African-American attorney general, serving the first African-American president of the United States. And that has to show that we have made a great deal of progress.
“But there’s still more we have to travel along this road so we get to the place that is consistent with our founding ideals,” he said.

Four months before the mid-term congressional election, Senate Democrats are pushing into the national spotlight “the most radical pro-abortion bill ever considered by Congress,” said Carol Tobias, president of the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the federation of state right-to-life organizations.
Tobias was one of two non-congressional witnesses who testified against the so-called “Women’s Health Protection Act” (S. 1696), at a hearing before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee this morning.

The 80-page report, prepared by an “expert panel,” makes recommendations on how to “nudge” the more than 47 million Americans on food stamps (SNAP) into spending their benefits on fruits and vegetables.
“Most Americans, including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants, do not purchase enough whole grains, dark green and orange vegetables, and legumes, and purchase too many items with excess calories from fats and added sugars.”

“Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security.
The chaos in Texas shows they won’t. Faced with a clear hole in the border — with a wave of tens of thousands of undocumented Central Americans crossing into the U.S. in order to get in line for hearings years from now, which they likely won’t attend while they continue to live here – pro-reform activists have scrambled, not to show their border security bona fides, but to generate arguments and outbursts designed to let the new wave stay. As National Journal’s Major Garrett reported, when President Obama, met with activists at the White House, he proposed that he make it clear that new migrants who don’t qualify for humanitarian relief won’t get in. The activists would have none of it:
Angelica Salas, executive director of Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, piped up and warned Obama that the driving energy to reach the United States could not be stopped. “Mr. President, when my family and I came to the country, I was 5 years old, and when we were caught crossing the border and were sent back, we didn’t give up,” Salas said. “We kept trying until we made it.”
