‘Holy Grail’: Newly Discovered School Bus-Sized Dinosaur Species Found in Sahara Desert

Researchers from Mansoura University in Egypt have recently discovered a new dinosaur species they say represents an advancement in our understanding of prehistoric land animals on the African and European continents.

As Fox News reports, the Mansoura University Vertebrate Paleontology program led the Egyptian expedition in the Sahara desert during which fossils belonging to the new species, subsequently named Mansourasaurus shahinae. The remains are believed to be about 80 million years old.

The species is described as a long-necked herbivore with bony plates embedded in its skin. It was about the size of a school bus, weighing more than 5 tons and stretching 33 feet long, according to Reuters.

Along with a detailed description of the remains found, a report published by Nature Ecology and Evolution noted that the discovery “provides an opportunity to test hypotheses of biotic connections between northern Africa and southern Europe during the (post-Cenomanian Cretaceous).”

That period, roughly 94 million to 66 million years ago, has provided few fossilized remains on the continent, according to the journal.

“Here we present a new titanosaurian sauropod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous (Campanian) of Egypt that is represented by the most complete terrestrial vertebrate skeleton yet discovered from the PCC of the African mainland,” the researchers wrote.

According to an author who contributed to the study, scientists might be closer to addressing a number of unanswered questions in light of research on this new species.

“Mansourasaurus shahinae is a key new dinosaur species, and a critical discovery for Egyptian and African paleontology,” Dr. Eric Gorscak said.

He went on to say that Africa is still in many ways a “giant question mark in terms of land-dwelling animals” during the period preceding the extinction of the dinosaurs.

“Mansourasaurus helps us address longstanding questions about Africa’s fossil record and paleobiology — what animals were living there, and to what other species were these animals most closely related?” said Gorscak, a postdoctoral research scientist at the Field Museum.

He noted that at least one question was answered with the discovery itself.

“Africa’s last dinosaurs weren’t completely isolated, contrary to what some have proposed in the past,” Gorscak said. “There were still connections to Europe.”

There has long been disagreement among scientists regarding how continental drift impacted the connection between Africa and Europe during this period.

Dr. Matthew Lemanna, a paleontologist at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and another author of the study, was even more effusive in his celebration of the discovery.

“When I first saw pics of the fossils, my jaw hit the floor,” he said.

Lemanna called the fossil the “Holy Grail,” echoing the study’s emphasis on its potential to answer longstanding questions.

He said that “a well-preserved dinosaur from the end of the Age of Dinosaurs in Africa” is something “we paleontologists had been searching for for a long, long time.” (For more from the author of “‘Holy Grail’: Newly Discovered School Bus-Sized Dinosaur Species Found in Sahara Desert” please click HERE)

American Visitors to Cuba Now Reporting Mysterious Attacks

Nineteen American citizens have reported symptoms similar to those suffered by U.S. diplomats who had been identified as victims of alleged attacks in Cuba.

“Since September 29, the Department of State has been contacted by 19 U.S. citizens who reported experiencing symptoms similar to those listed in the Travel Warning after visiting Cuba,” a spokesperson for the State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs told the Miami Herald in an email . . .

In late September, the State Department issued a travel warning advising Americans not to travel to Cuba because they could become victims of mysterious attacks such as those suffered by 24 diplomats and their families while they were stationed in Havana. The U.S. also removed most of the staff at its embassy in the Cuban capital.

Among the symptoms described in the travel warning are: “ear complaints and hearing loss, dizziness, headache, fatigue, cognitive issues, and difficulty sleeping.”

In January, the State Department changed the wording and currently recommends “reconsidering” traveling to Cuba. However, officials stressed that the situation on the island had not changed, nor their message to American travelers. The list of possible symptoms remained unchanged in the new travel advisory. Shock: Mexican Drug Bust Had Enough Doses to Kill over 19 Million People

By The Daily Wire. Late last week, Mexican law enforcement officials seized 100 pounds of the synthetic opioid fentanyl, one of the most lethal drugs in existence, in a vehicle approximately 30 miles south of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Mexican police say they intercepted the shipment — which also contained 14 pounds of meth, 88 pounds of cocaine and 18.5 pounds of heroin — close to the city of Ensenada in Baja California last Thursday, the Associated Press reported. Ensenada is just 30 miles south of the Mexican border city of Tijuana, the most likely destination for the drugs seized by Mexican authorities. Mexican Police Find 100 Lbs of Fentanyl in Multi-Drug Stash

By Associated Press. Fentanyl can be fatal in doses of just a few milligrams. To put the size of the haul in perspective, a seizure last year of 4.5 pounds (2 kilograms) of fentanyl in Columbus, Ohio, was said by prosecutors to be enough to potentially kill the entire population of the city of 860,000 people.

Police in Mexico said the drug shipment seized near Ensenada also included 914 pounds (415 kilograms) of crystal meth, 88 pounds (40 kilograms) of cocaine and 18.5 pounds (8.4 kilograms) of heroin . . .

In November, Mexican authorities seized 31 pounds (14 kilograms) of fentanyl hidden in a car on a highway between the Gulf of California and San Luis Rio Colorado, which is home to a border crossing with Arizona. (Read more from “Mexican Police Find 100 Lbs of Fentanyl in Multi-Drug Stash” HERE)

Mysterious Orange Crocodiles Mutating into New Species?

A group of mysterious orange cave crocodiles who live in complete darkness in Africa may be mutating into a new species.

Researchers discovered the 1.5-metre-long (5 ft) reptiles in 2008 in a remote cave in Gabon, western Africa, where they fed only on bats and crickets.

Experts first though they were a type of African dwarf crocodile, but new research shows they could be an entirely separate species.

Scientists led by the Institute of Research for Development in Marseille found about 30 specimens in the cave, including 10 orange crocodiles.

They suspect more crocodiles remain hidden in the depths of the cave’s system of rooms, which are filled with water. (Read more from “Mysterious Orange Crocodiles Mutating into New Species?” HERE)

U.S. ‘Peace Partner’ Honors Planner of Munich Massacre

The kidnapping and murder of 11 Israeli team members by Palestinian terrorists at the 1972 Olympics in Munich horrified the world.

But for the governing party of the Palestinian Authority, the massacre was a victory, and one of the attack’s planners, Ali Hassan Salameh, was a “heroic commander” of the Black September organization, worthy of honor on the anniversary of his death as a “martyr.”

In a post on Facebook Jan. 22, Fatah’s deputy chairman, Mahmoud Al-Aloul, mentioned the Munich attack as one Salameh’s life achievements.

Fatah said Salameh, “the Red Prince,” commanded “special operations against the Zionist intelligence throughout the world, and the sending of explosive packages from Amsterdam to many agents of the Mossad in European capitals.”

Palestinian Media Watch, which spotlighted the Facebook post, has documented numerous statements by PA and Fatah leaders honoring the terrorists from the Black September terror organization and praising the Munich murders as “an excellent operation.” (Read more from “U.S. ‘Peace Partner’ Honors Planner of Munich Massacre” HERE)

Man Killed After Being Sucked into MRI Machine

An Indian man died after being sucked into an MRI machine while visiting a relative at a hospital in Mumbai, police said Monday.

Rajesh Maru, 32, was yanked towards the machine by its magnetic force after he entered the room carrying an oxygen cylinder, the city’s police said in a statement.

“We have arrested a doctor and another junior staff member under section 304 of the Indian penal code for causing death due to negligence,” Mumbai police spokesman Deepak Deoraj told AFP.

The incident occurred on Saturday night at the Indian financial capital’s Nair Hospital.

Police said preliminary reports suggested that the man had died from inhaling liquid oxygen that leaked from the cylinder. (Read more from “Man Killed After Being Sucked into MRI Machine” HERE)

Opioid Sellers in China Exploit U.S. Postal Service Flaw

U.S. Congressional investigators said Wednesday that Chinese opioid manufacturers are exploiting weak screening at the U.S. Postal Service to ship large quantities of illegal drugs to American dealers.

In a yearlong probe, Senate investigators found that Chinese sellers, who openly market opioids such as fentanyl to U.S. buyers, are pushing delivery through the U.S. postal system. The sellers are taking advantage of a failure by the postal service to fully implement an electronic data system that would help authorities identify suspicious shipments.

At a time of massive growth in postal shipments from China due to e-commerce, the investigators found that the postal system received the electronic data on just over a third of all international packages, making more than 300 million packages in 2017 much harder to screen. Data in the Senate report shows no significant improvement during 2017 despite the urgency. (Read more from “Opioid Sellers in China Exploit U.S. Postal Service Flaw” HERE)

Kerry Tells Palestinian Authority: Do Not Give in to Trump

While the White House has confirmed that since the Jerusalem Declaration there has been a complete disconnect between the Palestinian Authority and the Trump administration, it turns out that the previous administration has maintained contact with PA officials.

Maariv reported that former US secretary of state John Kerry met in London with a close associate of PA President Mahmoud Abbas, Hussein Agha, for a long and open conversation about a variety of topics. Agha apparently reported details of the conversation to senior PA officials in Ramallah. A senior PA official confirmed to Maariv that the meeting took place.

Agha is one of Abbas’s closest associates and one of the veteran peacemakers with Israel.

He conducted the “London Track,” secret negotiations held from 2010 to 2013 between the emissaries of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, attorney Yitzhak Molcho and Brig.-Gen. Mike Herzog, under the supervision and presence of Dennis Ross. Agha also authored with Yossi Beilin the Beilin-Abbas agreement in the 1990s. He is considered a staunch supporter of the peace process, very close to Abbas, and maintains an extensive network of contacts, including Israelis.

During the conversation, according to the report, Kerry asked Agha to convey a message to Abbas and ask him to “hold on and be strong.” Tell him, he told Agha, “that he should stay strong in his spirit and play for time, that he will not break and will not yield to President [Donald] Trump’s demands.” (Read more from “Kerry Tells Palestinian Authority: Do Not Give in to Trump” HERE)

Scientists Clone Monkeys, Break Barrier to Human Cloning

By Reuters. Chinese scientists have cloned monkeys using the same technique that produced Dolly the sheep two decades ago, breaking a technical barrier that could open the door to copying humans.

Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua, two identical long-tailed macaques, were born eight and six weeks ago, making them the first primates — the order of mammals that includes monkeys, apes and humans — to be cloned from a non-embryonic cell.

It was achieved through a process called somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), which involves transferring the nucleus of a cell, which includes its DNA, into an egg which has had its nucleus removed.

Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Neuroscience in Shanghai said their work should be a boon to medical research by making it possible to study diseases in populations of genetically uniform monkeys.

But it also brings the feasibility of cloning to the doorstep of our own species. (Read more from “Scientists Clone Monkeys, Break Barrier to Human Cloning” HERE)

In a Scientific First, Cloned Monkeys Are Born

By Sharon Begley. There have been mice and cows and pigs and camels, bunnies and bantengs and ferrets and dogs, but ever since Dolly the sheep became the first cloned mammal in 1996, the list has had a conspicuous hole: primates. Now that hole has been filled.

Scientists in China reported on Wednesday in Cell that they had cloned two healthy long-tailed macaque monkeys from the cells of another macaque, using the Dolly technique. The two clones, born 51 and 49 days ago, were created from a fetus’s cells; so far, the scientists have not been able to make the tricky procedure work when they used cells from adult macaques. That would seem to postpone the dystopian day when cloning children and grown-ups becomes as mainstream as IVF. But because “the technical barrier [to cloning primates] is now broken,” co-author Mu-ming Poo of the Institute of Neuroscience in Shanghai told reporters, the technique “could be applied to humans” — something he said his team has no intention of doing and sees no reason for.

Cloning pioneers said the monkey clones represented, as Dr. Robert Lanza put it, “an impressive breakthrough, which overcomes the last major hurdle in the field.” Lanza co-led teams that cloned a gaur in 2000 and in 2014 used the Dolly technique to produce human embryos (but not pregnancies) from the cells of an adult. Oxford University Extended Exam Times for Women to Improve Their Grades: Report

Prestigious Oxford University in Britain extended exam times exclusively to women in a bid to improve their scores, reports on Monday said.

Female students taking math and computer science tests in the summer of 2017 were given an additional 15 minutes to finish, according to the documents obtained by the London Times.

No changes were made to the difficulty or length of questions. The university reportedly said women performed better as a result of the extension.

The move came after university officials deemed female candidates more likely to suffer from “the undue effects of time pressure” and thought the time extension could “mitigate the … gender gap that has arisen in recent years.”

The officials also said they believed the exam “should be a demonstration of mathematical understanding and not a time trial.” (Read more from “Oxford University Extended Exam Times for Women to Improve Their Grades: Report” HERE)
