From Venezuela to Iraq to Russia, Oil Price Drops Raise Fears of Unrest

BBm4gE2By Clifford Krauss and Rick Gladstone. Oil, the lifeblood of many countries that produce and sell it, appears to be rapidly turning into an ever-cheaper economic curse.

A year ago, the international price per barrel of oil was about $103. By Monday, the price was about $42, roughly 6 percent lower than on Friday.

In oil-endowed Iraq, where an Islamic State insurgency and fractious sectarian politics are growing threats, a new source of instability erupted this month with violent protests over the government’s failure to provide reliable electricity and explain what has been done with all the promised petroleum money. In Russia, a leading oil producer, consumers are now paying far more for imports, largely because of their currency’s plummeting value. In Nigeria and Venezuela, which rely almost completely on oil exports, fears of unrest and economic instability are building. In Ecuador, where oil revenue has fallen by nearly half since last year, tens of thousands of demonstrators pour into the streets every week, angered by the government’s economic policies.

Even in wealthy Saudi Arabia, where the ruling family spends oil money lavishly to preserve its legitimacy, the government has been burning through roughly $10 billion a month in foreign exchange holdings to help pay expenses, and it is borrowing in the financial markets for the first time since 2007. Other Arab countries in the Persian Gulf that are dependent on oil exports, including Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain, are facing fiscal deficits for the first time in two decades.

While the price has been declining for months, forecasts have always been hedged with the assumption that oil would eventually stabilize or at least not stay low for long. But new anxieties about frailties in China, the world’s most voracious consumer of energy, have raised fears that oil, now 30 percent lower than it was just a few months ago, could remain depressed far longer than even the most pessimistic projections, and do even deeper damage to oil exporters. Chinese Stocks Tumble for a Second Day After Global Fall

By BBC News. Chinese stocks have plunged for a second day after worries over China’s slowing growth triggered a global sell-off.

The Shanghai Composite, China’s main stock exchange, fell 7.6% on Tuesday – after losing 8.5% on what state media have called China’s “Black Monday”.

It was the worst fall since 2007 and caused sharp drops in markets in the US and Europe

Tokyo’s Nikkei index had a volatile day, closing 4% lower . . .

After decades of rapid growth, China is slowing down, and investors globally are worried that firms and countries which rely on high demand from China – the world’s second largest economy and the second largest importer of both goods and commercial services – will be affected. Asian Stocks Plummet, Chinese Rout Gathers Pace

By Thomson/Reuters. Asian stocks dived to 3-year lows on Monday as a rout in Chinese equities gathered pace, hastening an exodus from riskier assets as fears of a China-led global economic slowdown roiled world markets. . .

Copper, seen as a barometer of global demand, tumbled to 6-1/2-year lows as the anxiety over China sapped investor confidence.

Bourses from Japan to Malaysia were hit hard as Chinese stocks plummeted immediately after the open on Monday, with investors failing to take heart from the formalisation of rules over the weekend allowing pension funds to invest in the stock market.

Shanghai shares dived 7.7 percent to a five-month low, having lost more than 10 percent so far this month.

“The market is in a downtrend. There’s no good news, stocks are still expensive, and there’s no fresh money coming in,” said Qi Yifeng, analyst at consultancy CEBM. (Read more about the world markets plunge HERE)

Obama’s Peace Partner out of Control: Iran Threatens War, Announces Breach of Deal, Will Purchase Missiles

barackobamaBy Ari Yashar. The Iran nuclear deal sealed last month stipulates that the UN embargo on conventional weapons will continue another five years, and missile sanctions will remain for another eight years – but Iranian President Hassan Rouhani vowed Saturday to breach those conditions of the deal.

“We will purchase weapons from wherever we deem necessary and we are not waiting for anyone’s permission; if we deem necessary we will sell our weapons and we will do this without paying attention to any resolution,” Rouhani said at a National Defense Industry Day ceremony according to the semi-official Fars News Agency.

The comment comes after Rouhani threatened war if the Iran nuclear deal fails, saying, “Iran’s strategy is based on defense and deterrence. The first line is diplomats and the second line is generals. Diplomats should be backed by generals. If they fail, it is the generals’ turn to come forward.”

Critics of the deal already have condemned the agreement for weakening the restrictions on the missile trade of the leading state sponsor of terror, but Rouhani’s latest remarks indicate he doesn’t intend to even wait for the deal to remove the embargoes and sanctions.

While the UN Security Council resolution adopting the nuclear deal stipulates that the transfer to Iran of ballistic missile technology during the next eight years will be subject to the approval of the council, US President Barack Obama’s administration has said it would veto that request. Tehran Unveils New Advanced Missile, Satellite Launcher

By World Tribune. Teheran unveiled a new advanced missile during National Defense Industry Day ceremonies, as well as a satellite launcher that experts estimate paves the way for Iran’s development of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

The nuclear accord includes the stipulation that Iran not test long-range ballistic missiles that can be used to carry a nuclear payload. Iran’s Shihab 3 and Sejil 2 missiles are nuclear capable.

Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Aerospace Force Commander Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh said on Aug. 21 Teheran will hold ballistic missile tests in breach of the UN resolution.

“The IRGC Aerospace Force will hold a large-scale ballistic missiles war-games soon,” Hajizadeh said . . .

Observers say U.S. President Barack Obama weakened the UN’s hand when he vowed to veto a stipulation in the deal that the transfer to Iran of ballistic missile technology during the next eight years would be subject to the approval of the UN Security Council. (Read more from this story HERE)

Another Hero on Paris-Bound Train: U.S. Professor First Tackled AK47 Wielding Jihadist and Was Shot in Neck‏

mark-m_3416314bThe mystery identity of the first heroic passenger to wrestle a weapon from the high-speed train gunman can be disclosed for the first time by The Telegraph.

Mark Moogalian, a 51-year-old professor at the Sorbonne (originally from Virginia), tackled Ayoub El-Khazzani during Friday’s bloody incident aboard an Amsterdam-Paris international service. Mr Moogalian is the previously unnamed man who came to the aid of “Damien A”, 28, a French banker who confronted El-Khazzani.

The pair tackled the Kalashnikov assault rifle off El-Khazzani, who then drew a sidearm and shot Moogalian in the neck before taking back the rifle, his sister has revealed. Read here for more details.

The three Americans and one Brit who were able to tackle and tie up Ayoub El-Khazzani, the gunman, will recieve the Legion of Honour medal, France’s highest civilian honour.

El-Khazzani’s lawyer claims he was homeless and has suggested he was simply trying to commit a robbery. That version of events has been disputed by officials. (Read more from “Another Hero on Paris-Bound Train: U.S. Professor First Tackled AK47 Wielding Jihadist and Was Shot in Neck” HERE)

Obama Officials Heading to Mexico to Discuss International Gun Control via UN Treaty

GettyImages-455648766-640x427 (1)On August 24 officials from the Obama administration will be attending the UN Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) conference in Mexico City.

The ATT was signed by Secretary of State John Kerry on September 25, 2013 but never ratified by the US Senate. Nevertheless, Gun Owners of America reports that Obama officials will be in Mexico City for the conference.

Breitbart News previously reported that the ATT is an international gun control treaty designed to be implemented apart from, or in spite of, the general framework of governance for countries that are signatories to it.

Thus, while it will not do away with the Second Amendment on paper, it will subjugate the Second Amendment to the ATT’s gun controls if Obama administration officials return and implement the plans they will discuss in Mexico City.

ATT was pushed under the guise of stopping “small arms [and] light weapons” from crossing borders. And when it was being discussed in 2013, Breitbart News warned that firearm registration must proceed from the ATT if it is to be enforceable. After all, how can agents tasked with enforcing this treaty ascertain the origin of smuggled weapons without a comprehensive registration on file? Liberman: Barak Revealed State Secrets on Iran

F100829FF10-e1440333490811-635x357Former foreign minister Avigdor Liberman on Sunday accused erstwhile defense minister Ehud Barak of exposing state secrets, after the latter detailed on tape three occasions between 2010 and 2012 when Israel was ostensibly poised to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Liberman told Army Radio that he was “more than surprised” at Barak, and said statements such as those given by the former minister would ultimately strengthen Iran.

“I think that when moves and discussions that should have been closely guarded state secrets are discussed by the press, it relays that you are a talker, that you aren’t serious, that you’re unreliable,” he said . . .

Channel 2, which broadcast the bombshell recordings of Barak on Friday night, said Saturday that “anger” at the former defense minister was widespread in the Israeli leadership, and that numerous senior political and security officials were also privately intimating that Barak’s version of events was not entirely accurate. The Prime Minister’s Office did not issue an official response to the broadcast.

In the tapes, whose broadcast Barak was said to have tried to prevent, he claims that he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wanted to attack Iran in 2010, but that then-IDF chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi indicated that there was no viable plan for such an operation; that they were thwarted in 2011 by the opposition of fellow ministers Moshe Ya’alon and Yuval Steinitz; and that a planned 2012 strike was aborted because it happened to coincide with a joint Israel-US military exercise and Israel did not want to drag the US into the fray. Watch: Huge Explosions at US Army Base in Japan as Warehouse Burns and Emergency Services Rush to Scene

vast-US-military-presence-on-Okinawa-is-a-source-of-friction-with-islandersSeveral huge explosions were heard today at a US army base in Japan.

At least 10 fire engines rushed to the scene in Sagamihara city, south of Tokyo, amid reports of a blast sparked by an unknown cause.

Footage shows several small bangs and one huge explosion, which witnesses described on social media as like “a fireworks display.”

Pentagon spokesman US Navy Commander Bill Urban confirmed there are no injuries.

The site is part of a US army complex next to the capital where three deliberate explosions were reported in April, in what police suspect was an act of left-wing Japanese extremists. 3 Wounded as Heroic Off-Duty US Servicemen Subdue Gunman on Paris-Bound Train

Rifle Fast and FuriousOff-duty members of the U.S. military subdued a gunman “known to intelligence services” after he opened fire, injuring three aboard on a high-speed train en route to Paris from Amsterdam Friday.

Three U.S. servicemen were on board the train and overpowered the man when the train stopped in the northern French city of Arras, 115 miles north of Paris, French media reported. Some reports said the men were U.S. Marines but that could not be confirmed.

Passengers on the train subdued the gunman and prevented further carnage, said Christophe Piednoel, spokesman for national railway operator SNCF. The train was then diverted to Arras, where police arrested the suspect, Piednoel said on French television i-Tele.

The suspect was arrested after the train stopped in Arras, 115 miles north of Paris, Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henri Brandet said on French television BFM. Passengers were evacuated and police have secured the area . . .

The victims were identified as an American, a Briton and a Frenchman. Earlier reports said two American service members were among the injured. Two of the victims were in critical condition, according to a statement from the office of President Francois Hollande. China Conducts Fifth Test of Hypersonic Glide Vehicle

Hypersonic GliderBy Bill Gertz. China this week carried out another test of a new high-tech hypersonic glide vehicle, an ultra high-speed missile designed to deliver nuclear weapons and avoid defenses.

The latest test of what the Pentagon calls the Wu-14 hypersonic glide vehicle was carried out from the Wuzhai missile test range in central China. The test was judged successful, according to defense officials familiar with details of the event . . .

U.S. intelligence agencies have been tracking the Wu-14 since for over a year and have gained valuable insights into the weapon, the officials said.

No additional details were provided on the maneuvering activities of the Wu-14. However, the evasive actions bolstered suspicions that China is building the missile with capabilities designed to defeat U.S. defenses.

Current U.S. defenses are designed to track missiles that travel in predictable flight paths and are unable to counter maneuvering warheads and glide vehicles. (Read more from “China Conducts Fifth Test of Hypersonic Glide Vehicle” HERE)
