Confused Kamala Harris Warns of West Virginia’s ‘Abandoned Land Mines’

Last week, Vice President Kamala Harris gave an exclusive interview to a local television news station in West Virginia.

In the interview, Harris was asked about the state’s coal industry. She reassured West Virginia coal miners that even if their jobs disappear under the Biden administration — and the implication was clear that they would disappear — mine workers could transfer their skills to new industries. She then listed several exciting new careers coal miners could consider. The first of these was, and I quote: “reclaiming abandoned land mines.”

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Are there really that many abandoned land mines lying around in West Virginia? Enough to make a whole job industry out of minesweeping?” And: “Is it safe to go hiking there?”

Friends, I asked this too. As a West Virginia resident myself, the question is urgent. Admittedly, I have never once encountered a land mine in two decades of living here, but I may have just been lucky (there was that one time the neighbor’s cat left something in our driveway, and my family all stepped in it on the way to church, but I don’t think that counts). . .

But let’s return to Vice President Harris. According to Politico, she meant to say “abandoned mine lands,” not “abandoned land mines.” Well, okay. We all make mistakes. It’s just that someone familiar with mining terminology, or military terminology — and, you know, a lot of West Virginians are familiar with both — would probably not make that particular mistake. Joe Biden Seeks to Surge Foreign-Born Voting Population Ahead of Elections

President Joe Biden is looking to surge the number of legal immigrants who become naturalized American citizens, and thus are eligible to vote, ahead of the 2022 midterms and 2024 presidential election.

In an executive order on Tuesday, Biden ordered multiple federal agencies to work to boost the rates of legal immigrants becoming naturalized citizens.

The order seeks to “eliminate barriers in and otherwise improve the existing naturalization process … [and] substantially reduce current naturalization processing times … [and] make the naturalization process more accessible to all eligible individuals, including through a potential reduction of the naturalization fee and restoration of the fee waiver process.”

The order creates the “Interagency Working Group on Promoting Naturalization” that includes the Department of Homeland Security, the Labor Department, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of House and Urban Development, the Department of Education, the Social Security Administration, and other federal agencies to “develop a national strategy to promote naturalization.” (Read more from “Joe Biden Seeks to Surge Foreign-Born Voting Population Ahead of Elections” HERE)

Jeff Bezos to Step Down as Amazon CEO; Meet the Man Taking Over Jeff Bezos’ Role

By CNBC. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos will leave his post later this year, turning the helm over to the company’s top cloud executive, Andy Jassy, according to an announcement Tuesday. Bezos will transition to executive chairman of Amazon’s board.

Bezos, 57, founded Amazon in 1994 and has since morphed the one-time online bookstore into a mega-retailer with global reach in a slew of different categories from gadgets to groceries to streaming. Amazon surpassed a $1 trillion market cap under Bezos’ leadership in January of last year — it’s now worth more than $1.6 trillion.

The company had kept its succession plans quiet, though onlookers speculated that either Jassy or Jeff Wilke, CEO of Amazon’s worldwide consumer business, would be Bezos’ eventual successor. In August Amazon announced Wilke will retire in 2021. Jassy, 53, will become CEO in the third quarter.

Jassy joined Amazon in 1997 and has led Amazon’s Web Services cloud team since its inception. AWS continues to drive much of Amazon’s profit. (Read more from “Jeff Bezos to Step Down as Amazon CEO” HERE)

Jassy currently leads the company’s cloud computing offshoot, Amazon Web Services, which provides a range of online services for businesses.

A graduate of Harvard Business School, Jassy founded AWS in 2003 and became its CEO in 2016.

GameStop Rout Erases $27 Billion

GameStop Corp.’s rally came to a screeching halt this week as the shares had their biggest one-day loss on record, erasing more than $27 billion in market value from their high.

The stock, which has been the focus of Redditors looking to squeeze short-sellers, fell 60% on Tuesday, closing below $100 for the first time in a week. Several other Reddit favorites — including movie-theater chain AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. and clothing retailer Express Inc. — also tumbled.

GameStop’s retreat has coincided with a sharp reduction in short interest after bearish investors appeared to cover their positions. That loosened a squeeze on the stock caused by day traders who used Reddit forums to tout and bid up out-of-favor stocks that also included American Airlines Group Inc. and BlackBerry Ltd.

“With GameStop, if you trade now you are presumably betting on what happens tomorrow or next week,” said Craig Birk, chief investment officer at Personal Capital. “There are online pleas to buy and hold, but this does not feel like a buy and hold situation.” (Read more from “GameStop Rout Erases $27 Billion” HERE)

Indigenous Rights Group to Protest Kansas City Chiefs Over ‘Dehumanizing’ Name

The Kansas City Chiefs will arrive in Tampa this week as defending Super Bowl champs and the bearers of a divisive name.

Ahead of kickoff for Super Bowl 55 on Sunday, a local group plans to stage a protest at Raymond James Stadium to urge the team to ditch the “Chiefs” moniker out of respect for Native American people.

The St. Petersburg-based Florida Indigenous Rights and Environmental Equality, or FIREE, wants to call attention to how hurtful the team’s name is to indigenous people who see their culture and spirituality appropriated and caricatured by fans who wear headdresses and war paint and swing their arms in an Arrowhead Chop, said group co-founder Alicia Norris.

“When you make indigenous people into a mascot, it’s extremely dehumanizing, especially for children,” Norris said. “This is coming to our backyard, so we’re going to say something about it.” (Read more from “Indigenous Rights Group to Protest Kansas City Chiefs Over ‘Dehumanizing’ Name” HERE)

Prof Wishes Death for Trump Supporters

A professor wished death on supporters of President Trump in a tweet, but his university says he’s facing no consequences because no one has filed an “official complaint.”

The College Fix reported the tweet from Mark Alfano of Macquarie University in Australia, who recently received a grant of nearly $1 million to study “intellectual humility” toward political opponents.

Under the online name Neon Trotsky, he shared a newspaper statement about the death of a Trump supporter during the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

. . .The College Fix said he taught at the University of Oregon from 2013 to 2015. He then did research at Princeton and taught at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands before moving to Macquarie. (Read more from “Prof Wishes Death for Trump Supporters” HERE)

Gun Sales SOAR Nationwide; How Many Guns Did Americans Purchase in January?

By The Daily Item. Federal background checks for firearm purchases hit record totals across the nation and in Pennsylvania in 2020, continuing a trend of increased checks coinciding with presidential election years.

The reasons for the increase in background checks and firearm sales, particularly in late 2020, those in the industry and gun owners say, are varied.

Some are concerned the new Biden administration will layer additional restrictions on gun and ammunition sales.

Others are concerned with growing division across the nation and distrust of law enforcement personnel.

Some simply want to protect themselves and their homes or are concerned about law enforcement being able to protect them. (Read more from “Firearms Sales Hit Record Highs in Pennsylvania, Nationwide” HERE)

Boom in Gun Sales Continues in 2021

By Toledo Blade. Toledo-area gun store owners are reporting bare shelves and a months-long backlog as the demand for firearms and especially ammunition continues to exceed the supply.

They expect the 2020 record firearm and ammunition sales levels to continue at least for several months until pandemic-based anxiety and increased societal division subside.

Local stores are reporting an influx of first-time gun buyers, pointing to doubts about the election and fears that President Biden might keep his gun-control campaign promises. (Read more from “Boom in Gun Sales Continues in 2021” HERE)

How Many Guns Did Americans Purchase in January?

By Townhall. Democrats control both chambers of Congress and the White House. One of their top priorities, outside of another coronavirus relief package, is pushing a radical gun control agenda. Once again, Americans are rejecting that policy position and showing support for the Second Amendment, as evidenced by the latest numbers released from the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

The FBI conducted 4.31 million background checks in the month of January, its highest on record since November 1998. . .

According to Mark Oliva, the NSSF’s Director of Public Affairs, the Biden administration and their anti-gun stance have fueled Americans’ purchasing decisions, especially when it comes to firearms. . .

“January’s NICS figures clearly spell out that the demand of law-abiding Americans to purchase firearms isn’t abating. It is growing. Three of the top 10 weeks and one top 10 single day for the highest number of FBI NICS background checks occurred in January,” he explained. “Taken into context that all but one of the top 10 weeks and four other top 10 single-day records occurred during the 2020, when 21 million background checks were conducted, these are a jaw-dropping figures to start the New Year. Americans are claiming their Second Amendment rights to provide for their own safety in record numbers.” (Read more from “How Many Guns Did Americans Purchase in January?” HERE)

Yale Doctor Slams Fauci for His Dismissal of Hydroxychloroquine

A Yale University doctor took aim at Dr. Anthony Fauci for the infectious disease expert’s dismissal of hydroxychloroquine as a potential treatment for COVID-19.

“I really wish Dr. Fauci would say something in terms of evidence. He never quotes any studies. It’s hard to know if he has any evidence,” Dr. Harvey Risch said of Fauci’s dismissal of the drug during an appearance on the Ingraham Angle. “The study we published is a review of all of the evidence for early treatment as a whole.”

Risch continued by pointing out that there are many treatments that work well in addition to hydroxychloroquine.

“It’s not just one drug,” Risch said. “It’s not just hydroxychloroquine. There are many drugs that can be used, as we have seen this week. … There is a whole new repertoire … of drugs that work in early treatment. And we combine them to get maximal benefits. That’s how we treat early COVID, and it works well.”

“It’s astonishing,” Risch continued. “Everything has become politicized, and it’s like Big Brother is watching over every … move with a script behind the scenes that nobody understands. These drugs are inexpensive. They are generic. Nobody is making a huge profit over them, and maybe that’s the bottom line.” (Read more from “Yale Doctor Slams Fauci for His Dismissal of Hydroxychloroquine” HERE)

House Committee to Consider Removing GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene From Positions

The House Rules Committee announced on Monday that it would take up measures to remove Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from her committee assignments.

If passed by the House, Resolution 72 would effectively remove Greene from her seats on both the House Education & Labor Committee and the House Budget Committee. The Rules Committee is scheduled to meet about Greene on Wednesday.

The resolution to remove Greene, authored by Representative Deborah Wasserman Schultz, alleges that her recent conduct violates clause 1 of rule 23, which states that, “A Member, Delegate, Resident Commissioner, officer, or employee of the House shall behave at all times in a manner that shall reflect creditably on the House.”

Before introducing the measure, Wasserman Schultz told reporters, “We’re focused on making sure that we can render powerless the poisonous nature of this member. The House has to be able to take actions to police its own membership.” (Read more from “House Committee to Consider Removing GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene From Positions” HERE)
