Aimless and Missionless: Every Special Ops Group Has Lost a Soldier This Year

For the amount of lives and money our military has spent nation-building in nonexistent Middle Eastern nation states, we could have locked up our border, defeated the cartels, chased out the Mullahs in Iran, and evinced a strong deterrent against China. In fact, we could have done so at a fraction of the cost and without sparing too many lives. Instead, we have sunk trillions of dollars into Islamic tribal civil wars with so many of our best soldiers killed and have nothing to show for it other than cartels controlling our side of our own border, Iran as belligerent as ever, and China on the ascendancy.

According to Task and Purpose military magazine, every one of the 12 active-duty Special Forces groups (better known as “Green Berets”) has lost at least one soldier in Afghanistan or Syria this year. For an important war with a clear and sustainable purpose directly related to our national security, that would be an unfortunate but reasonable cost. But could someone answer the basic question of what are we doing in those two countries and on behalf of which tribes?

In past generations, when we lost soldiers in battle, we could point to the ground gained or preserved, the purpose of it, and the assurance that this was the absolute necessary cost of that imperative mission. In the case of places like Somalia, Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, which have historically never really been nation-states along presently recognized boundaries, nobody is explaining which ground we are gaining or holding on behalf of whom, and in what sustainable way that will be supported by the locals without tipping the balance to another enemy. Most of all, how do these tribal wars affect us?

For example, are we fighting Iranian proxies in Syria or are we fighting the Sunni insurgency on behalf of Iran, thereby helping them? Or are we aimlessly taking turns alternating between the two? Who are we trying to prop up in Afghanistan, on behalf of whom are we rebuilding territory, and which tribe is supporting us? These are basic questions that not a single member of Congress is able to answer.

The problem is, as retired Col. Dan Steiner said on my show last week, our military-industrial complex and interservice rivalries has allowed what was originally supposed to be targeted strikes against specific terrorists to become a nation-building mission on the ground. This needlessly puts our troops at risk for no reason in unsustainable tribal warfare rather than investing in strike and maneuver to identify the threats and hit them with our air superiority.

Steiner, a veteran of Desert Storm, which was won with overwhelming air power, tells me we need to learn the lessons of Effects Based Operations (EBO) and what works in the field.

“As the nation has struggled to find a 21st century model for defeating its enemies, the concept of Effects Based Operations has been debated multiple times,” said the retired Air Force commander in an interview with CR. “As complex as I could make this statement, let me make a controversial analogy: ‘You can’t teach an old dog a new trick.’ Tanks will never work on a modern battlefield. Battleships cannot be sunk by Air Machines. Jet engines are too unreliable to replace prop driven aircraft. We are simply not updating to a 21st century model.”

“An effects-based approach starts with the end-game of action as the starting point in planning the appropriate application of each of the elements of security — diplomatic, information, military, and economic — to reach the desired end-state. Accordingly, EBO concepts traditionally take a ‘systemic approach’ to security challenges, evaluating the situation through the lens of strategic centers of gravity — leadership, key essentials, infrastructure, population, and military forces. Were we to apply this to Afghanistan, we would never be deploying ground troops for this long.”

Imagine if this is what we would have been doing for 18 years? We would have conserved our money, troops, hardware, research and development, and most importantly, our resolve to deter the more serious threats like Iran, China, and the cartels at our own border with a fraction of the cost and a more effective strategy.

Instead, what we have done is try to hold together the entire fractured Afghanistan with special operators, as if they are a convention infantry. Presidents of both parties have done that so that we are officially preventing a “Saigon moment” with Kabul being sacked by the Taliban, but also get to repeat the talking point that there aren’t too many troops on the line. The problem is that special operators weren’t designed to be used that way.

It also stems from the fact that Green Berets are working with mythical “Afghani soldiers” that are unreliable, corrupt, and often bribed by or working with the enemy. This is why they are constantly led into ambushes. But nothing has changed over 18 years in terms of the capabilities of the Afghani forces no matter how many tens of billions of dollars we pump into them. That is because there is no united tribal constituency that is definitively pro-America with a drive to defeat that Taliban that we can work with.

We can have the strongest military in the world, but there is no way we can send isolated units into these types of cities on foot patrol and leave them there indefinitely without any defensive lines or strategic offensive vision, while any suicide bomber dressed as a civilian can attack them. This isn’t a war; this is a social work operation in a war zone – the worst combination of all.

This week, Congress is debating passage of the FY 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Ideally, this would be the time to debate a vision for our military – where they are needed and in what capacity. Instead, every NDAA debate revolves around how much money we spend, not which policies to pursue.

Were we to finally define and then prioritize our policies abroad, the question of appropriations on military spending would become so much easier. Sadly, certain interests within government need failed policies that succeed in nothing more than perpetuating their own failure in order to justify the budget. House Democrats Plan Meeting for Trump Impeachment

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will convene the Democratic caucus at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Tuesday to discuss whether to impeach President Donald Trump.

The new development, reported by Washington Post congressional correspondent Rachel Bade on Monday evening, comes in the wake of reports late last week that President Trump encouraged Ukrainian officials to re-open inquiries into the business dealings of former president Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden.

As Breitbart News reported earlier this year, Biden forced out former Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin as he was investigating an energy company called Burisma Holdings, which was paying Biden handsomely as a member of its board. The former vice president even boasted to the Council of Foreign Relations last year that he had threatened to withhold $1 billion in U.S. aid unless the prosecutor was fired. (He did not tell the audience about his son’s role.) Conservatives claim Biden obstructed justice to protect his son — who enriched himself using his father’s prestige.

It is not clear what law, if any, Trump would have broken by urging the Ukrainian government to re-open the case. The alleged “whistleblower” in the case did not hear his conversations with Ukrainian leaders directly, and the Wall Street Journal has suggested there was no quid pro quo — that Trump did not offer (or withhold) anything in return. . .

In July, the House voted 332-95 to postpone an impeachment resolution. As of last week, the Democrats only had 175 votes for impeachment from their 235 member — 43 votes short of the 218 necessary for a House majority. Almost all of the Democratic presidential contenders support impeachment, but only 37% of the public support it, while half oppose impeachment, according to the most recent Politico/Morning Consult poll released last week. Poll: Here Is the ‘Least Popular’ Policy in 2020 Race

The most unpopular position in the 2020 Democrat presidential primary is a policy forcing American taxpayers to provide free healthcare for 11 to 22 million illegal aliens living in the United States, a new survey reveals.

According to the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, when all American voters are asked to rank 12 policies from best to worst, a plan to provide taxpayer-funded healthcare to all illegal aliens — endorsed by Democrat front-runners like Joe Biden, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) — ranks as the least popular among the bunch. . .

Of 12 policy ideas tested in the poll, providing government-sponsored health care to undocumented immigrants was the least popular among the broader electorate, with 62% rejecting it. In a June Democratic debate, all 10 candidates on the stage, including Messrs. Biden and Sanders, raised their hands when asked who backed the idea. In the new survey, it was supported by 64% of Democratic primary voters but only 36% of voters overall. [Emphasis added]

As Breitbart News estimated, providing free healthcare to every illegal alien in the U.S. would cost up to $66 billion a year or $660 billion over a decade to American taxpayers. Already, Americans are forced to subsidize illegal aliens’ medical costs to the sum of almost $20 billion a year. (Read more from “Poll: Here Is the ‘Least Popular’ Policy in 2020 Race” HERE)

FBI Arrests U.S. Soldier for Allegedly Planning to Be a Domestic Terrorist

. . .According to NBC News, when an undercover FBI agent suggested to 24-year-old Pfc. Jarrett William Smith that he wanted to bomb a “liberal Texas mayor,” Smith quipped back “Outside of Beto?” He did not try to discourage the agent from targeting a mayor, but instead said that he didn’t “know enough people that would be relevant enough to cause a change if they died.” . . .

The BBC reported that Smith also wanted to go to Ukraine and join a far-right paramilitary group, or kill members of Antifa. He also talked about carrying out attacks in the United States and was telling multiple people online how to build bombs.

“Oh yeah, I got knowledge of IEDs for days,” Smith reportedly said in a Facebook chat according to NBC News. “We can make cell phone IEDs in the style of the Afghans. I can teach you that.” This chat was allegedly with Craig Lang, an American who had joined a nationalist paramilitary group in Ukraine. . .

“There have been cases where Middle Eastern insurgents built these bombs only for them to detonate prematurely because telemarketers or people with wrong numbers who unwittingly called the devices,” he warned, according to the BBC. Text Messages Reveal NYT Reporter TOLD Kavanaugh Source What to Say

A Senate Judiciary Committee report revealed that New York Times reporter Robin Pogrebin coached sources on what to say and how to respond to her questions based on information she obtained, The Federalist reported. Her motive was to shape a false narrative against now-sitting Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and allegations of sexual misconduct. Pogrebin is one of the co-authors of the anti-Kavanaugh book whose chapter was featured in the New York Times last week.

The newspaper was forced to issue a correction for failing to include exculpatory evidence about the accuser. Earlier this week, Pogrebin said Kavanaugh wanted her to lie about what took place. . .

From The Federalist (emphasis mine):

Pogrebin made a bizarre and unsupported claim this week that Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh had told her to lie. It turned out Pogrebin had mischaracterized discussions with the Supreme Court’s public information officer, not Kavanaugh, who had merely explained the terms of an off-the-record interview that was being sought and never obtained. Despite the many errors and false claims Pogrebin and her co-author Kate Kelly made, corporate media picked up on this false statement as if it were true.

A 2018 text exchange between Karen Yarasavage and Kerry Berchem shows them discussing Deborah Ramirez’s claim against Kavanaugh. Yarasavage was extremely close to Ramirez — having asked Ramirez to be a godmother to one of her children — and knew Kavanaugh well, too. Berchem was younger and not at Yale when the alleged incident was said to have taken place. While in reality, the text exchanges show Berchem trying to get Yarasavage to say something supportive of Ramirez’s claim, even though Yarasavage said she’d never even heard of any such incident and felt confident she would have if it had happened, the media characterized the discussions as evidence of Kavanaugh’s guilt.

Ohio Child Sex Trafficking Sting Nabs More Than 100

By Fox News. . .Those arrested included 24 men caught when they showed up at an undisclosed location with the intention of meeting a child for sex, Maj. Steven Tucker of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said.

“They show up with sex toys, they show up with lubrication,” Tucker said. “They show up with things that clearly somebody isn’t going to show up to a house with, unless they intended to engage in sexual activity.”

The 24 suspects were charged with attempted unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and importuning, Columbus’ WBNS-TV reported.

The total group of 104 suspects included Christian Gibson, 26, a former youth director at Redeemer’s at Courtright Church in Columbus, and Austin Kosier, 31, an emergency room doctor, authorities said, adding that the sting was focused on Franklin, Fairfield and Delaware counties.

Tucker said he oversaw the investigation carried out by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Officers would pose as underage boys or girls online and communicated with the men in Internet chats. (Read more from “Ohio Child Sex Trafficking Sting Nabs More Than 100” HERE)

AOC: House Democrats’ Refusal to Impeach Is a Bigger Scandal Than Trump’s’ ‘Lawbreaking Behavior’

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez suggested Saturday that House Democrats’ unwillingness to oust President Donald Trump is more scandalous than anything the president has done up to this point in his presidency.

Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive Democrats in the House have been poking and prodding the moderate members of their party to move more quickly on impeachment proceedings. She became more insistent Saturday night, telling her fellow Democrats to take impeachment more seriously.

“At this point, the bigger national scandal isn’t the president’s lawbreaking behavior — it is the Democratic Party’s refusal to impeach him for it,” she said in a tweet to her followers. Some of Ocasio-Cortez’s fellow Democrats dinged her on Twitter for making what they believe to be a false equivalence.

“It is one thing for a sitting president to break the law. It’s another to let him. The integrity of our democracy isn’t threatened when a president breaks the law. It‘s threatened when we do nothing about it,” she said in a follow-up tweet responding to the criticism.

House Democrats are trying their level-best to move forward on impeachment charges, but they have not gained much headway. (Read more from “AOC: House Democrats’ Refusal to Impeach Is a Bigger Scandal Than Trump’s’ ‘Lawbreaking Behavior’” HERE)

Former Federal Prosecutors Now Going After Giuliani’s Law License (VIDEO)

By Law and Crime. Reports that President Donald Trump brazenly and repeatedly pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to cooperate with Rudy Giuliani in investigating Hunter Biden have led even the more moderate legal experts to suggest that impeachment may be necessary. As the sordid details of Giuliani’s role in the alleged disinformation plot continue to mount, the backlash against the president’s personal lawyer has intensified, with at least one former federal prosecutor calling for him to be disbarred and another suggesting he may have opened himself up to criminally liability. . .

Mimi Rocah, a former federal prosecutor with the Southern District of New York, responded to Giuliani by comparing him to a mafia underling following the orders of a crime boss.

“This how mafia bosses work. They make the ‘request’ & soldiers & capos (Rudy Giuliani) follow up with the demand,” she tweeted, before calling for the former New York City mayor to face more tangible consequences.

“Why is this man still a member of the NY a bar? He should not be. He is free as a [United States] citizen to make up stuff but not as member of the bar,” she wrote.

Rocah’s take on Giuliani was echoed by former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti, who categorized the ordeal as an affront to the office of the president. (Read more from “Former Federal Prosecutors Now Going After Giuliani’s Law License” HERE)

Fox News Host Confronts Guiliani, Asks If It Was ‘Appropriate’ to Look for ‘Dirt’ on Biden in Ukraine

By Newsweek. Fox News White House correspondent John Roberts confronted President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Guiliani over his travel to Ukraine, questioning whether it was “appropriate” for him to look for “dirt” on Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden in the foreign country.

“When did this morph into an investigation of Joe Biden and [his son] Hunter Biden? And is it appropriate for you as a representative of the president to be going to Ukraine and finding dirt on Joe Biden and/or his son to use politically in 2020?” Roberts, who was guest hosting Fox News Sunday, asked.

“That’s the way you characterize it,” Guiliani, the former mayor of New York City, pushed back.

Hail to the Chief: Warren Steadily Surges in Democrat Primary

By Breitbart. Less than a year after Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) declared herself vindicated for being less than two percent Native American, the former Harvard University professor is leading in multiple state and national polls for the 2020 Democrat nomination for president.

In the most recent Des Moines Register/CNN/Mediacom poll out of Iowa, Warren took the lead with 22 percent of Democrat primary voters for the first time. Former Vice President Joe Biden, meanwhile, fell to second place with 20 percent, while Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) trailed in third with 11 percent.

When Democrat primary voters were asked who their second choice for president would be, Warren gained 20 percent of voters for a combined first and second choice tally of 42 percent. Biden, on the other hand, is only the second choice for about ten percent of voters, while Sanders about doubles his prospects.

Warren had led hugely against her Democrat contenders in an Iowa Starting Line-Change Research poll from August. In that poll, Warren surged past Biden and Sanders by 11 points, earning nearly 30 percent of support overall. . .

Warren’s surge in Iowa, though, has been met with confrontation from some farmers in the agricultural state who vehemently oppose the Green New Deal, which she has endorsed. In one conversation, an Iowa farmer confronted Warren over her support for the plan, which he said would cripple his industry because of its goals to eliminate cows. A Record Share of Voters Dislike Trump Personally, but Democrats Face Challenges of Their Own

By NBC News. As Democratic candidates compete for the opportunity to take on President Donald Trump, the incumbent they hope to oust is more personally disliked than any of his recent predecessors, and half of voters say they’re very uncomfortable with the idea of his re-election.

But the electorate at large also expresses doubts about some of the progressive policies being backed by candidates like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, and the party’s more moderate frontrunner — Joe Biden — also faces questions about his fitness for the job.

Those are the major findings in the latest release from the September NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, which also shows that 46 percent of Americans give Trump credit for what they call an improving economy, the highest share of his presidency.

“The Democrats want a referendum on Trump. The GOP wants a comparative choice. And therein lies the rub,” said Democratic pollster Peter Hart, who conducted this survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff and his firm Public Opinion Strategies. Alleged 2016 Election Interference: Senator Calls for Investigation Into Biden Ukraine-Connection (VIDEO)

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called on Sunday for the Department of Justice to investigate “all things Ukraine” after a scandal involving Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden has made national news in recent days.

The Republican appeared on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” with host Maria Bartiromo where he called for the DOJ to investigate the Biden-Ukraine connection the same way that the DOJ investigated the Trump-Russia connection.

“Joe Biden said everybody’s looked at this and found nothing,” Graham said. “Who is everybody? Nobody’s looked at the Ukraine and the Bidens. Nobody’s looked at the role the Ukraine played in the 2016 election.”

“Do you think the media in America would really look at it and report on it if there was something bad for the Bidens or are they unduly interfered in the 2016 election?” Graham continued. “I’m calling for somebody in the Justice Department to look at all things Ukraine. We have looked at all things Russia and Trump, his family, everything about his family, every transaction between the Trump campaign and Russia.” Graham said.

“Now it’s time to see whether or not the Ukrainians released information regarding Manafort, who was Trump’s campaign manager. What relationships, if any, did the Biden world have to the Ukraine,” Graham continued. “What role, if any, did the Ukraine play in the 2016 election? So nobody’s looked at this, but somebody should. So I’m hoping the Department of Justice will look at the Biden-Ukraine connection like we looked at the Trump-Russia connection.”
