Funding U.S. Sovereignty

We were a Nevada family when promoters first floated the idea of a high-speed magnetic-levitation (“maglev”) rail project between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. It would travel across the desert at speeds up to 300 mph, arriving in Anaheim in 81 minutes.

We were stoked. My grandsons would be surfers! But like most such proposals, this one couldn’t find adequate financial backing.

A more recent fast-rail proposal would connect Los Angeles to San Francisco, 380 miles distant, at speeds up to 220 mph. This one found financing aplenty, but lacked adult supervision.

The initial 2008 estimate was $33.6 billion in construction costs. That’s what California voters agreed to. Completion was projected by 2028. By 2012, the California government said make that $53.4 billion. Then last year, they said – what the heck – make it $63.2 billion, but it won’t be finished until 2033. The boondoggle’s other legs lift the overall cost to $98.1 billion.

Former California Gov. Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown apparently wasn’t cut out for managing large projects like this one. Current Gov. Gavin Newsome pulled the plug shortly after his inauguration in January. “There’s been too little oversight,” he said, “and not enough transparency.”

But “before you celebrate the sudden outbreak of common sense in California,” as Investor’s Business Daily cracked last month, Newsome made the astonishing announcement that he still wants to build the bullet train from Merced (pop. 83,000) to Bakersfield (pop. 380,000).

In between the two is Fresno (pop. 512,000). It’s extremely unlikely that these populations will yield enough ridership to keep the rail system solvent. That’s $10.6 billion down the drain, just in construction costs, and then a system that will almost certainly bleed red ink deep into this century.

Far be it from me to stigmatize mental illness, but this appears to be lunacy. Can we at least agree that we don’t want our accountants to be lunatics? Still, it’s California. If you live in a different state, why should you care about the latest outbreak of moon-barking on the Left Coast? Because you’ve got $3.5 billion “skin in the game.”

Yes, your federal government has participated in the funding for this proposed project. It was supposed to be a matching grant, dollar-for-dollar. But by the end of last year, the state of California had spent $3 billion on the project, and only 15 percent was California money. The rest, a little over $2.5 billion, was your money.

Democrat Newsome has clung to the Merced-to-Bakersfield black hole because quitting would trigger “sending $3.5 billion in federal funding back to Donald Trump.”

This is a disturbing rationale. An American public official would rather pour $10.6 billion of hard-earned taxpayers’ money into a guaranteed failure than to return it to the people who may have better uses for it, maybe even an urgent need for it?

But I have to thank Gov. Newsome for provoking me to think that through. What could we do with $3.5 billion on the federal side?

Well, Congress said we can’t afford to fund $5 billion in border fencing. We only appropriated $1.375 billion for 55 miles of new fencing at the border. That’s $25 million per mile of fencing. At that rate, we could build another 140 miles of fence, for a combined total of 195 miles fenced this year.

But why does it cost so much? In 2007, when fencing was built under the Secure Fence Act of 2006, it cost $2.8 million per mile. By 2008, it cost $3.9 million per mile. I understand that labor costs escalate, and perhaps we’re building a higher quality of fence nowadays. But if the fence cost $10 million per mile, we could build 137 miles of fence with the Congressional appropriation, and 420 miles of fence with the repaid California rail grant. Even at $12.5 million, we could build 110 miles with the Congressional appropriation and 280 miles with the repaid California rail grant.

In the long run, we should finance the fence and all the necessary manpower and technology at the border by a tax on foreign remittances to the sources of illegal immigration.

That’s a tax on Western Union, Moneygram, bank transfers and money orders originating in the U.S. and destined for any of the countries that benefits from their citizens extracting wealth from our country and sending it home.

This is a fair tax because it burdens the groups that make immigration enforcement expensive. It doesn’t focus unfairly on Mexicans, but also on Central American sources of illegal immigration.

It also burdens illegal immigrants who have not come across the southern border, but have overstayed student and tourist visas. There are more illegal immigrants here from India, for example, than from Nicaragua.

It’s less fair that the tax on foreign remittances can’t distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants. Even U.S. citizens would have to pay the tax to send money to friends and family in countries that are sources of large numbers of illegal immigrants. But the fact remains that they are removing wealth from our economy and our communities, on a one-way trip to foreign countries. We’re entitled to take that into account.

This Is How Rand Paul Will Vote Regarding National Emergency

Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul said he will vote against a resolution in an attempt to terminate President Donald Trump’s national emergency for border wall funding.

Paul will join a group of three Republicans who have expressed their concerns with Trump’s declaration for a national emergency, saying they do not believe the president should be allowed to override Congress to such a degree.

“I can’t vote to give extraconstitutional powers to the President,” Paul said, to the Bowling Green Daily News Saturday. “I can’t vote to give the President the power to spend money that hasn’t been appropriated by Congress,” he continued. “We may want more money for border security, but Congress didn’t authorize it. If we take away those checks and balances, it’s a dangerous thing.” He was speaking to the Warren County Republican Party. . .

“As a U.S. senator, I cannot justify providing the executive with more ways to bypass Congress,” Tillis wrote in an op-ed for The Washington Post. “As a conservative, I cannot endorse a precedent that I know future left-wing presidents will exploit to advance radical policies that will erode economic and individual freedoms.” . . .

Democratic Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro introduced the resolution, which he said will pass the House, as 222 cosponsors have jumped on board. Castro sent out a tweet saying his resolution would terminate Trump’s national emergency. Democrats only need 218 supporters to pass the resolution. After Jewish Dem Calls Her out, Omar Doubles Down on Anti-Semitic Accusation

Just two days after a top House Democrat condemned Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) for her troubling history of anti-Semitism, the freshman lawmaker ignited controversy once again on Sunday when she appeared to accuse a Jewish congresswoman of wanting her to pledge allegiance to Israel.

Omar’s comments seemed to double down on her belief that pro-Israel lawmakers hold dual loyalty. Such accusations are exhausted anti-Semitic charges. . .

On Sunday, Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.), who is Jewish, called for Omar to “engage in further dialogue with the Jewish community” to understand why “anti-Semitic tropes that accuse Jews of dual loyalty” are offensive and considered racist. . .

She essentially doubled down on her charge that pro-Israel lawmakers have dual loyalty, adding that she believes she is being pressured to support Israel.

Dems Continue Their Assault on the Trump Administration by Launching Another Probe

Democrats are desperate to take down President Donald Trump. The Russia probe has proven to be ineffective and, quite frankly, a waste of time and taxpayer money. They didn’t find what they wanted so now they’re launching another probe.

During an interview with ABC’s “This Week,” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) said the Committee plans to request documents from more than 60 people at the White House and Trump Organization. The reason? They want to “protect the rule of law,” USA Today reported. . .

“The White House seems to have used its power for personal enrichment in violation of the emoluments clause of the Constitution,” Nadler said. “We don’t have the facts yet, but we’re going to initiate proper investigations. Before you impeach somebody, you have to persuade the American public that it ought to happen.”

The Committee is especially interested in hearing from Donald Trump Jr. and Adam Weisselberg, the chief financial officer for the Trump Organization, and plans to release the full list of names on Monday.

Trump took to Twitter to remind the public that the probe is nothing more than a “witch hunt.”

‘POMPOUS LITTLE TWIT’: Greenpeace Co-Founder Unloads on Ocasio-Cortez

Patrick Moore, the co-founder of Greenpeace, slammed socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on Saturday for being a hypocrite over living a lifestyle that does not align with her extremist views on climate change.

Moore, who has a Ph.D. in ecology, called out Ocasio-Cortez after she mocked a New York Post article that highlighted her numerous flights and car travel — which are things she attacked in her Green New Deal.

“I also fly & use A/C Living in the world as it is isn’t an argument against working towards a better future,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “The Green New Deal is about putting a LOT of people to work in developing new technologies, building new infrastructure, and getting us to 100% renewable energy.”

Moore fired back: “The “world as it is” has the option of taking the subway rather than a taxi. option of Amtrak rather than plane, option of opening windows rather than A/C. You’re just a garden-variety hypocrite like the others. And you have ZERO expertise at any of the things you pretend to know.”

Stunning Poll Shows How Many Voters Thought Michael Cohen’s Testimony Was Credible

By The Blaze. A new poll shows just what percentage of registered voters thought the testimony of Michael Cohen against President Donald Trump before Congress was credible. . .

The HarrisX/TheHill poll found that only 37 percent of registered voters surveyed said that they found the former lawyer and confidante of the president to be credible.

Cohen flipped on Trump after ten years of being his close personal friend and lawyer. In dramatic testimony before Congress, he accused the president of indirectly suborning perjury and said that he was a racist and a liar.

Those accusations were found to be non-credible according to 25 percent surveyed in the poll.

Michael Cohen’s Lawyer Admits Cohen Was Interested in Working in Trump White House

By Fox News. An attorney for Michael Cohen acknowledged in a statement Friday that Cohen was once interested in working in the White House under President Trump but later decided against it – amid claims from Republicans that Cohen lied this week about his past ambitions for a high-profile White House position.

“The fact is, early on, Michael Cohen speculated about a possible position in the White House,” Cohen attorney Lanny Davis said in a statement. “But after he consulted with his family and friends, he decided that he preferred to stay at home in New York City and be ‘personal attorney to the president.’”

On Thursday, House Oversight Committee Republicans on Thursday referred Cohen to the Justice Department for alleged perjury, claiming he lied during sworn testimony before the panel a day earlier about a number of issues, including his ambitions to work in the Trump administration. Davis maintains that Cohen was truthful.

“If this is what Mr. Trump and his supporters are focusing on — and not a single rebuttal of any fact asserted by Mr. Cohen in his long day of testimony under oath before the Oversight Committee — that says a lot,” Davis said Friday. “This is the classic Trump tactic we have seen for a long time —divert and disparage rather than confront facts and tell the truth.” (Read more from “Michael Cohen’s Lawyer Admits Cohen Was Interested in Working in Trump White House” HERE)

No Surprise: Warren Is Fundraising off Cohen’s Testimony but There’s One Catch

Not long after Michael Cohen testified in front of the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Wednesday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) decided to fundraise off Cohen’s testimony. She sent an email to supporters asking them to sign a petition urging President Donald Trump and future presidents to not pardon anyone connected to the Russia probe, The Hill reported.

“Under oath and in an open session of Congress, one of Donald Trump’s most trusted advisors implicated him in criminal activity while he’s been in the White House,” the email read. “Our criminal justice system is hanging on and doing its job – the truth is coming out – despite unprecedented, relentless, and potentially illegal pressure from Donald Trump and his associates in and out of government. But here’s the biggest threat right now: Donald Trump, or the next President, using the pardon power to cover up and permanently excuse this wrongdoing.”

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) sent out a similar fundraising email to supports, saying “Michael Cohen’s testimony makes this clear: Trump is a threat to our country. It’s up to us to make him a one-term president.” (Read more from “No Surprise: Warren Is Fundraising off Cohen’s Testimony but There’s One Catch” HERE)

U.S. Economy Tops Three Percent Growth Over Calendar Year, a Milestone Obama Never Achieved

A few important caveats, lest anyone be tempted to spike the football without reservations: First, while several of these data points are definitely encouraging, whether this level of growth (and continued record-low unemployment) can be sustained through 2019 and 2020 is an open question — and one that could be determinative as to the president’s re-election chances. Second, in the fiscal year, overall US GDP growth fell just shy of three percent, by one-tenth of one percentage point. Third, it’s virtually guaranteed that these numbers would be significantly better if the president were not engaged in multiple trade-related showdowns and tariff battles. Whether one agrees or disagrees with his approach to trade policy (I mainly disagree), it is settled economic science that increased tariffs are anti-growth. And finally, there’s a risk that the developing global slowdown could infect the US economy, even if we’re performing relatively well. Now, onto the good news:

U.S. economic growth was better than expected as 2018 came to a close, with GDP rising 2.6 percent, according to a first estimate the Commerce Department released Thursday. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones expected a gain of 2.2 percent after a 3.4 percent rise in the third quarter. The growth came amid a bevy of uncertainty and a time when the stock market briefly slid into bear market territory…Even with the weaker fourth quarter, economic growth was solid for the year, after GDP gains of 2.2 percent and 4.2 percent in the first and second quarters respectively…Employment remains strong, with payroll gains continuing in excess of 200,000 a month and wages rising at the fastest clip of the recovery.

Fourth quarter GDP exceeded experts’ expectations, topped three percent over the last year (more on that shortly), and is buttressed by sustained, low unemployment, and steadily rising wages. Bloomberg reports on a strong indicator that the GOP’s tax reform law — which is cutting taxes for the vast majority of Americans, despite universal Democratic opposition — helped spur 2018’s robust growth, thanks to increased business investment.

This Is How Much Transgender Troops Cost Taxpayers Since 2016

The Pentagon has spent nearly $8 million to treat more than 1,500 transgender troops since 2016, including 161 surgical procedures, according to data obtained by USA TODAY.

As of Feb. 1, 1,071 service members have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Public Health Service on active duty and in the reserve force. . .

Transgender troops and their medical and psychological treatment has been a flash point for controversy since President Donald Trump tweeted in July 2017 that he wanted to ban them from the military. In January, the question reached the Supreme Court, which ruled that a modified ban could take effect while lower court challenges continued. . .

Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have blasted the Pentagon policy as bigoted. She invited transgender troops to Trump’s State of the Union address this month.

Data on the population of transgender troops have been closely held at the Pentagon. The most definitive estimates of the population of transgender troops have come from a Defense Department-commissioned report in 2016. The non-partisan RAND Corp. report estimated as many as several thousand among the 1.3 million service members on active duty in the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and Navy. RAND researchers determined that their treatment would have negligible effects on military readiness. (Read more from “This Is How Much Transgender Troops Cost Taxpayers Since 2016” HERE)

‘UGLY RACIST TWEET’: Ocasio-Cortez Slammed for Promoting Bigotry

Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez faced backlash this week after she came to the defense of fellow far-left Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) on Twitter following racial remarks that Tlaib made during a House Oversight Committee hearing. . .

“Just because someone has a person of color, a black person, working for them does not mean they aren’t racist and … the fact someone would actually use a prop, a black woman in this chamber, in this committee is alone racist in itself,” Tlaib said as she took aim at Meadows.

Ocasio-Cortez responded by tweeting: “Total bravery from @RashidaTlaib as she reminds the nation that tokenism *is* racism.”

The Reagan Battalion: “This is an ugly racist tweet. Assuming that a woman of color is too stupid to know what she wants and she is being used as a ‘token’ is racist.”
