Media Hammers Trump, Suggesting He May Now Be Open to Amnesty [+video]

(Editor’s note: Trump has previously made statements unambiguously supporting forms of amnesty. However, the below article – and many others today like it – are designed by the MSM to make Trump’s current positions appear soft on illegal aliens to help soften his hard-right support. But suggesting Trump is currently advocating for amnesty based upon his statements in the below video is weak, at best. Listen to Joe’s perspective on the Trump candidacy at the end of the below article)

At a campaign event today at the U.S.-Mexico border, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump left the door open to amnesty. He did so at a press conference on the border.

A reporter asked, “Mr. Trump, what would you do with the 11 million undocument immigrants who are already here?”

“The first thing we have to do is strengthen our borders,” Trump started . . .

Trump has not made clear how as president of the United States he would deal with the illegal immigrants already in this country. Today’s press conference left the door open for some sort of amnesty in the future.

More Illegals Will Avoid Deportation Under Obama’s New Policy, Report Says

Twenty-five thousand more people will avoid deportation each year under a new federal information-sharing agreement with local jails, but more immigrants convicted of serious crimes will be deported, according to an analysis of deportation numbers by a nonpartisan think tank.

Using Census Bureau and Homeland Security Department data, the Migration Policy Institute issued a report Thursday that asserts the so-called Priority Enforcement Program would target about 13 percent of immigrants in the U.S. without authorization, or about 1.4 million of the estimated 11 million people.

Previous immigration policies targeted a much wider swath, about 27 percent of all immigrants in the country illegally, or about 3 million people.

The new program has the “potential to substantially reshape” enforcement practices by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, report author Marc Rosenblum wrote.

President Barack Obama announced in November that the Priority Enforcement Program would replace the older Secure Communities program, which provided immigration agents with fingerprint records collected at local jails. Donald Trump Makes a Texas-Size Splash With Visit to Mexican Border

A defiant Donald Trump, visiting the U.S. border with Mexico here Thursday, said again that he will not apologize for his hard-line rhetoric on illegal immigration or back away from his plan to build a wall between the two nations.

During a whirlwind visit — it was less than three hours from when his jet touched down to when it took off — Trump blazed around in a presidential-style motorcade that included seven SUVs and even more police cars. Local officers blocked off roads, including Interstate 35, for Trump’s entourage.

The Republican presidential candidate, leading the GOP field in national polls but increasingly under fire from the establishment wing of his party, said repeatedly that he had been told he would be in “great danger” if he visited this town of 236,000 in southern Texas — even though Laredo, which is roughly 96 percent Hispanic, has a significantly lower murder rate than Trump’s home town of New York City. He would not say who had told him that he was at risk.

At the World Trade Bridge, where a long line of 18-wheelers queued up to enter the United States, Trump spent half an hour meeting with local leaders — none of whom seemed eager to endorse his signature prescription for border security.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, with the crossing as a backdrop, Laredo City Manager Jesus Olivares said the border fence Trump has been calling for was not on their list of priorities. (Read more from “Donald Trump Makes a Texas-Size Splash With Visit to Mexican Border” HERE)

An Immigration Solution that Puts Americans First

Speaking before a crowd of newly-arrived immigrants on October 16, 1924, President Calvin Coolidge declared, “as a nation, our first duty must be those who are already our inhabitants, whether native or immigrants.”

This principle of “Americans first” was a bedrock value shared by both political parties until this past generation. While there were always sharp disagreements on domestic policies concerning Americans, everyone understood that Americans should be the first priority of any policy decision. Now we have a president and entire class of ruling elite – from the politicians and the media to the non-government agencies, to the corporate chiefs and the courts – who not only place the priorities of those already here last, they jeopardize their security and fiscal stability in order to appease a growing population of illegal immigrants.

Rather than acquiring inspiration from the testimonies of those families who lost loved-ones at the hands of illegal aliens – like that of Laura Wilkerson’s – this president and his servile friends in the media completely ignored them. Then, the very next day, he announced a new amnesty, by expanding an already abused waiver program exempting broad categories of inadmissible aliens from deportation, which will likely lead to eventual green cards for millions of illegals. On the very same day, it was revealed that Obama’s Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will allow new immigrants becoming citizens to omit the portion of the Oath of Allegiance affirming their commitment to bear arms in defense of this nation, even for “non-combat service.”

The priorities of our ruling class have never been more inverted and downright hostile to the values of America.

It’s time for supporters of sovereignty, rule of law, and putting Americans first to come out of the shadows and demand true “comprehensive immigration reform,” – one that reflects the values and needs of their constituents. It’s time to seize the moment when people are finally attentive to this issue and demand that the politicians move beyond the hollow platitudes about the need to secure the border when pressured to address the issue. It means committing to the specific common sense solutions that have been proven effective time and again.

For anyone who truly cares about Americans, they would start by pushing the items from the following list:

Defund DAPA and DACA, Finish the Fence, Implement Entry-Exit System

Immediately defund both DAPA and DACA amnesty programs (the latter was not enjoined by the courts) in this year’s budget bill, including work permits, Social Security cards, and refundable tax credits

Build the 700-mile double-layered fence of which only 36 miles have been completed. This type of fence worked in San Diego, Yuma, and Israel and it is the only asset that cannot be manipulated and disarmed by a contemptuous administration.

Finally implement the biometric entry-exit system at all sea, land, and air ports

Strong Interior Enforcement

Immediately restore and expand the 287(g) state-federal training program for law enforcement

Immediately restore the Secure Communities program for state and local law enforcement to share information with ICE

Cut off all DOJ grants and highway funds to sanctuary cities

Explicitly deputize states to enforce federal law and enable them to cut off state benefits to illegal aliens

Cut off Benefits and Magnets

End birthright citizenship and birth tourism by clarifying the authentic meaning of the 14th Amendment. Harry Reid declared in 1993 that “no sane country” would offer such an enticement and reward for illegal immigration.

Close the loophole that allows illegal aliens to receive refundable child tax credits

Cut off all taxpayer funds to NGOs such as La Raza and Casa de Maryland that promote illegal immigration

Implement E-verify

Hold Foreign Governments Accountable

Cut off visas to those countries that refuse to repatriate their illegal aliens, as mandated by existing law

Cut off foreign aid to countries that fail to take steps to respect our sovereignty

Judicial Reform

Strip courts of ability to strike down federal and state enforcement laws. All of the enforcement efforts will be moot if unelected judges continue to confer rights and privileges on illegal immigrants.

Criminalize Overstaying of Visas

With more illegal immigrants coming from visa-overstays, it’s important to make such an act a felony instead of a misdemeanor.

Zero Tolerance for Re-entrants

Bar all those who re-enter the U.S. illegally from ever obtaining legal entry for the rest of their lives and/ or require mandatory minimum prison time

Fix Loopholes in Refugee, Asylum and Parole System

Fix the asylum loophole that has been exploited to grant legal status to entire categories of individuals from impoverished countries, even though they don’t have a “credible fear” of ethnic or religious persecution

Fix the loophole that has allowed Obama to abuse the parole and temporary protective status for carte blanche amnesty

End the UN’s authority to direct refugees to this country. This will enable us to weed out our security risks

Rand Paul Calls for Elimination of Gun Free Zones in Military Installations

Photo Credit: Breitbart In the wake of a recent domestic terror spree in Chattanooga, Tennessee that left four Marines dead, criticism of “gun free zones,” especially in military installations, has increased.

Debate over changing this policy has followed similar incidents in recent years where unarmed military personnel were murdered, both at Fort Hood, Texas in 2009, and the U.S. Naval Yard shooting in Washington, D.C. in 2013. However, trained military personnel remain disarmed, even in the wake of ISIS calling for “homegrown jihad” against U.S. service members.

The policy that led to “gun free zones” was enacted via a Department of Defense directive in 1992 by George H.W. Bush’s Deputy Secretary of Defense, and was renewed in 2011.

Now, Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is presently calling for a change to this policy, telling reporters that he previously introduced a bill to arm military bases and seeks to do so again.

The Washington Post’s Dave Weigel reported,“Paul, who was elected to the Senate a year after Hasan’s 2009 killing spree on the Texas military base, has long favored a policy shift that would allow guns on bases.” (Read more about Rand Paul Fighting Military Post Gun Free Zones HERE.

Watch: Millennials’ Jaws Drop When They Learn a Fact About Hillary That Horrifies Them

Campus Reform correspondent Cabot Phillips recently headed to D.C. to conduct impromptu interviews with passersby. Armed with a list of all presidential candidates and the logos of four recognizable Wall Street financial institutions, Phillips asked young adults to pick which White House hopeful they believe received the biggest donations from each corporation.

A clear majority picked Republicans, specifically Scott Walker, Jeb Bush and Donald Trump.

One woman recognized an underlying partisanship in the answers she and a man with her provided.

“Every person we’ve picked so far has been Republican,” she said. “And we’re both Democrats.”

After each contestant made his or her choices, Phillips revealed that Hillary Clinton is the correct response in all four cases. (Read more from “Watch: Millennials’ Jaws Drop When They Learn a Fact About Hillary That Horrifies Them” HERE)

Iran Deal: How It Came to This and Where We Go From Here

It’s not too often that wayward politicians are presented with a second chance to rectify their colossal mistakes, especially with regards to an issue as consequential as Obama’s treaty with Iran. Obama’s appalling, yet predictable, abrogation of the Corker-Cardin congressional process and his reneging on core promises has provided Congress with just that opportunity. But the question remains: will they pursue it?

Cotton Takes a Stand

Ultimately, if Obama is unbendingly committed to governing like a king and usurping our Constitution, there is little Congress can do to stop him, especially after they ruled out the vital check vested in the power over the purse. The check of impeachment has been rendered moot because of the dynamics of party politics. But the worst thing Republicans in Congress can do is validate and legitimize Obama’s harmful and unconstitutional policies.

This understanding was the rationale behind the letter Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) and 46 other Republicans sent directly to the Iranian government. Seeing that Obama was relentlessly devoted to cementing this alliance – no matter how egregiously the Iranians behave – Cotton saw the value in publicly declaring that any deal reached without either two-thirds of the Senate affirmatively ratifying it as a treaty or majorities in both chambers of Congress affirmatively approving it as a congressional-executive agreement, would not be recognized as legitimate.

GOP Self-Immolates

For reasons only known to God, Republicans seamlessly retreated in May from their stated position and agreed to pass the Corker-Cardin bill. This bill and the messaging used to promote it accepted Obama’s premise that he has the authority to fully implement the Iran treaty unilaterally without any congressional input. By “allowing” Congress the ability to read the agreement for 60 days and the opportunity to disapprove of it if they could muster two-thirds in opposition, Obama was not only granted legitimacy and the green light to forge the worst possible deal, he was credited for taking a compromising stance with the legislative branch.

Consequently, the public was given the impression that Congress would have a meaningful say in the final deal, but in reality this deal co-signed the GOP-led House and Senate to an unconstitutional process designed to fail.

Some Republican supporters of the capitulation defended Corker-Cardin as the only way to secure congressional scrutiny of the deal. But as we noted at the time, Obama was always destined to release the public text of the deal (he can’t hide it), but with or without Corker-Cardin he would never disclose the more important parallel agreements and private commitments he has made to Ayatollah Khamenei. For example, why is our air force serving as the Iranian protection force in Iraq? Why are we arming enemy Shiite militias but not the Kurds? Why is Obama silent in the face of endless violations of sanctions and acts of aggression, such as seizing ships in international waters? Why are the Iranians saying they can now import and export arms and military hardware “anytime and anyplace?” Those agreements will never be made public to Congress or the American people, even though their existence is quite apparent.

Obama Double-Crosses Congress

Fearing that his pact with Iran would be indefensible even for many Democrats, Obama was too cowardly to wait 60 days and rely on merely one-third of a single body of Congress to sustain his potential veto. He went straight to the UN Security Council on Monday to lock in support for lifting sanctions in a move that Secretary of State John Kerry proudly proclaimed will place Congress “in noncompliance with this agreement and contrary to all of the other countries in the world” – even if they secure two-thirds in opposition to the deal.

This act of betrayal alone should immediately prompt members of Congress to repeal Corker-Cardin. But it gets worse. As we’ve noted, Obama was never going to release the details of his private dealings with Iran to Congress – with or without a formal review process. Now, Senator Cotton and Rep. Mike Pompeo (R- KS) have exposed the details of two secret deals Obama has cut with Iran, based on conversations these Republicans had with officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Cotton and Pompeo are asserting that Iran has secured an agreement to keep any process for inspection of their secretive Parchin military complex and issues related to the broader military dimensions of Iran’s nuclear program classified from any U.S. officials. These issues cut to the core concern – that between the lifting of sanctions on Iran’s military, ballistic missile and advanced weapons program, as well as the lack of inspections at military sites and disclosure of their clandestine program, Iran will have the ability to break out with a bomb and delivery system long before the agreement expires. As Cotton and Pompeo note, this is a direct violation of the Corker-Cardin bill, which requires the administration to provide Congress with all information and documents, including the details of side deals.

Obama has not only violated every red line he committed to in 2013 and subsequently promised during the April framework agreement, he has added new components to the deal, such as the promise to help Iran develop their nuclear program and protect it from Israeli “sabotage.” Obama has also allowed all sanctions to be lifted almost immediately, removed restrictions on their ballistic missile program, phased out the embargo on the sale of advanced weapons, and agreed to an unenforceable inspections scheme. The plain language of the deal seems to indicate that even the tepid requirements of Iran might be “voluntary.” As it relates to the ballistic missile program, Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) pointed out at today’s Senate Foreign Relations hearing with Kerry that page 9 of the UN Security Council resolution uses non-binding language when discussing restrictions on Iran’s ballistic missile program even for 8 years.

As late as last September, the administration said they would allow Iran no more than 1,500 centrifuges. Now they will have over 6,000, according to the parameters of the deal. After the framework was forged in April, Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz said “we expect to have anytime, anywhere access” to weapons and nuclear sites. Now, that has turned into “nowhere, no time” for the important sites and 24 days for the public sites.

Obama has betrayed the very deal he pushed to give his Democrats cover.

A Path Forward

Republicans now have the opportunity to repeal the Corker-Cardin bill because Obama has already vitiated it. Rather than remaining a victim to a failed and unconstitutional process Obama refuses to abide by, it’s time for Republicans to go on the offense. Here are six immediate steps they can take:

1.) Republicans should immediately vote on a concurrent resolution (which doesn’t need the president’s signature) rendering this pact, at the very least, a congressional-executive agreement and canceling the already-nullified Corker-Cardin deal.

2.) They should then proceed to conduct votes, one after another, on individual provisions of this deal to put the Democrats on record.

3.) After establishing the Iran pact as a treaty or congressional-executive agreement the Senate should then bring the public text of the deal to the floor and conduct an up-or-down vote. It will be voted down and it will be up to the Democrats to decide whether they want to be on the wrong side of history and public opinion.

4.) Instead of going home for the entire month of August, a bicameral group of Republicans should rotate shifts of members willing to stay in session for a few days at a time and relentlessly draw attention to every aspect of the deal, Obama’s on-the-side agreements and alliance with Iran, and expose all of the promises that have been broken by this administration.

5.) Republicans should follow Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) lead by using budget bills and authorization bills for the State Department functions to defund any aspect of the nuclear deal that expends money for implementation or helps Iran develop their R&D for its nuclear program.

6.) Members of Congress should pressure their state governors into committing now to preserving their state’s Iran divestment laws.

At this point, the only alternative is to crawl into a fetal position and beg 13 Senate Democrats and 44 House Democrats to join them in an unconstitutional process that Obama has already violated and will never respect. Anyone who cares about our national security would be wise to go on offense. Donald Trump: Time to Rethink Free Trade (and the Ghost of Smoot-Hawley)

Donald Trump’s candidacy raises more urgent issues than the Donald’s sometimes poor choice of words: Trump has sparked a less-noticed but far more important debate about the future of our nation’s economy, the sustainability of American life, jobs, and a decent salary for Americans. This ultimately fuels the economic strength of the United States that makes it possible to defend our nation and its people.

It’s about Smoot-Hawley. I am talking about the myth, the ghost, the coat hanging on the back of the door that looks like a monster in the dark, the nightmare that makes uninformed and gutless politicians wake up with the sweats at 3:00 AM. It’s not the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 which is our problem at hand. It is the fairy tale, the fantasy, the primitive superstition of Smoot-Hawley that is driving our nation’s horrible, self-destructive decisions on economics.

Donald Trump, Mike Huckabee, and other GOP candidates want to create jobs, raise family incomes, and strengthen the U.S. economy by keeping jobs and factories here at home. Remember all that moaning and groaning about out-sourcing, the loss of manufacturing jobs, jobs going overseas, and that “giant sucking sound” (Ross Perot)? Well, Trump actually wants to do something about these problems and expand jobs here in the United States.

But that is protectionism! Blasphemy! Economic giants Larry Kudlow and Arthur Laffer are blasting Trump in columns and on radio. Critics are shouting that Trump’s protectionist policies will drive the country into another depression. It is a deep-seated belief in official Washington, and especially among Republican elites, that favoring U.S. workers, controlling the borders, and enforcing immigration laws damages economic growth. So the elites give lip service to what voters want while actually pushing for free trade and open borders. Trump isn’t playing the establishment’s game.

Washington’s elites are traumatized by a fairy tale. In 1930, after the crash on Wall Street, Congress raised tariffs (taxes or duty) on products traded internationally by the protectionist Smoot-Hawley Act. And then the Great Recession got worse.

So that’s like millions of people who take aspirin die. They take aspirin. And then they die. But Smoot-Hawley did not cause the Great Depression any more than aspirin causes people to die. In fact, both aspirin and protectionism actually help, not hurt. No, washing your car really does not make it rain.

Actually, even those who sit around the campfire telling Smoot-Hawley ghost stories do not claim that high import tariffs or policies favoring U.S. workers cause a recession. Instead, the economists’ catechism is that Smoot-Hawley sparked a vicious trade war. It was, so they say, the furious international exchange of recriminations that contributed to the Great Depression. But Trump’s whole point is that U.S. Government negotiators are just stupid when it comes to handling our international trade relations. Trump’s argument is that we don’t handle those issues very well.

It is well-documented by now that the Federal Reserve turned the 1929 stock market crash after a speculative bubble into the Great Recession. The newly-created Federal Reserve incompetently and dramatically shrank the nation’s money supply, starving the economy and collapsing banks. The enduring myth that protectionism causes a recession or depression has been the boogeyman hiding under politicians’ beds for decades. America’s economic policy, especially internationally, has been corrupted, poisoned, and twisted by the irrational fear that protectionism causes depressions.

Economic conservatives insist that all trade is good. All trade? Always? So do conservatives believe in selling $100,000 luxury cars for $500? You could sell a whole lot of $100,000 cars at $500. Business would be brisk and the customers would surely appear happy. But is that what conservatives mean by trade is good, business is good? Is that what we mean by free trade? Losing money in most international transactions? One of my favorite business jokes is sure we are losing money, but don’t worry, we’ll make it up on volume.

Trump proposes reining in the sheer stupidity of the U.S. Government in international trade deals. The U.S.A. is bleeding from a thousand cuts because our trading partners extract lop-sided deals that benefit those other countries and harm the United States. Trump lambasts U.S. officials who are lousy negotiators and let other countries walk all over us.

The U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Trade Representative have sold out the country for decades. Trump correctly diagnoses the real problem: the United States government is simply stupid. Foreign countries are ripping us off and playing us for suckers And one reason we fall for it is our fear that economic growth requires giving benefits in trade to other countries that they do not give to us in return.

We need to consider some things: First, the original U.S. Constitution was written so that tariffs (taxes or duties on imported products) and excise taxes were the only source of income to finance the entire U.S. Government. Our Constitution is premised on tariffs imposed on trade and other excise taxes. Washington politicians cannot seriously argue that high import tariffs are a bad idea, when they are a part of our Constitution’s foundation.

Second, developing a product in the U.S.A and then transplanting the manufacturing line to another country is not free trade. That is theft of intellectual property and proprietary trade secrets. Innovation in the U.S.A. births an American product using American know-how and engineering. Then the factory is simply relocated after the design is perfected in the U.S.A. That is not what economic theory means by free trade. The U.S.A. bears the costs of development while the foreign country reaps the profits but escapes the costs. The profits are shifted to the other country without the corresponding costs. A product invented and developed in the U.S.A. should not be considered like a product invented in another country.

Putting a high tariff on U.S. products that have been transplanted matches economic theory that the company’s private costs must equal the costs to society as a fundamental assumption of economic theory. If a private company can shift its costs to American society as a whole, then the marketplace is distorted and economic theory fails (by its own terms). Even the most conservative, Austrian School, economist holds that a private business must shoulder the full societal costs of its own activities for economic theory to be valid.

A note in full disclosure: time permitting, your author will be collecting petition signatures for Ted Cruz to get Cruz on Virginia’s primary election ballot. Donald Trump is a wrecking ball to a corrupt political system that sorely needs a wrecking ball. But my analysis is about what is best for our country, not because I am in the tank for any candidate. Keep Export-Import Bank in Its Corporate-Welfare Grave

If a man swipes your wallet, he’s a thief. We don’t ask whether the pickpocket ultimately spent the cash on a worthy cause. Yet, supporters of corporate welfare would have you believe that as long as the companies receiving welfare prosper, you shouldn’t care that the government snatched your money to make it happen.

In fact, some people pushing corporate welfare are so dedicated to the ideology of political cronyism that they’ll euphemistically describe wealth redistribution from regular Americans to politically connected businesses as “economic development.”

On June 30, regular Americans won a big victory with the expiration of a particularly egregious example of cronyism, the Export-Import Bank, also known as Ex-Im. Recently, President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats have been cheerleading for Ex-Im. But in 2008, then-Senator Obama called Ex-Im “little more than a fund for corporate welfare.” He was right.

Ex-Im subsidizes the exports of mostly large, well-connected corporations. The top beneficiaries of Ex-Im’s support in 2014 included Boeing, General Electric, and Caterpillar — hardly companies in need of taxpayer assistance. Boeing alone received more than 68 percent of the benefits from Ex-Im’s long-term guarantees in 2014, which is why people derisively refer to Ex-Im as “Boeing’s Bank.”

Ex-Im uses your money to fund loans and guarantees to foreign companies that buy products from particular U.S. exporters. This transfer of money from you to them doesn’t create jobs; it destroys jobs. (Read more from “Keep Export-Import Bank in Its Corporate-Welfare Grave” HERE)

TED CRUZ HAMMERS EVERYONE IN WASHINGTON FOR EX-IM BANK PLOY: ‘WASHINGTON CARTEL AT ITS WORST’

By Matthew Boyle. In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, Sen. Ted Cruz is firing away at President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell, House Speaker Rep. John Boehner and pretty much everyone else in Washington for hatching a ploy to try to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank, which expired about a month ago.

“The Ex-Im Bank is the Washington Cartel at its worst,” Cruz said when asked about the emerging ploy by career politicians in D.C. to reauthorize the bank.

The Washington Cartel consists of career politicians in both parties who get in bed with Washington lobbyists, with special interests, and enrich those interests at the expense of the American taxpayers. The Ex-Im Bank consists of taxpayers providing hundreds of millions of dollars of loan guarantees to a handful of giant corporations, each of whom has armies of lobbyists that write campaign contributions to Democrats and Republicans who campaign in support of free markets, who campaign in support of turning around our deficit and debt, who campaign in support of principles like welfare reform. Now is the time to decide whether your principles matter more than campaign dollars.

Cruz had specific messages to every rank-and-file Republican, every rank-and-file Democrat and the two top GOP leaders on Capitol Hill, McConnell and Boehner, that he wants to make clear ahead of any Ex-Im effort.

“To every Republican: Are you going to join with Barack Obama in perpetuating the cronyism and corporate welfare of the Export-Import Bank, or are you going to stand up and honor the promises you made to the men and women who elected you?” Cruz said. At Least 3 Dead After Gunman Opens Fire at Lafayette, La. Movie Theater

A gunman killed two people and injured nine others late Thursday when he opened fire with a semi-automatic handgun in a Lafayette, La. movie theater before turning the weapon on himself, the city’s police chief said.

Chief Jim Craft told reporters that authorities had identified the shooter as a 58-year-old white man, but did not release his name, citing the ongoing investigation. Craft later said that the gunman had a criminal record, but had not been in trouble with the law recently. He did not elaborate further, and added that no motive had been established. Early Friday, Craft said that investigators were investigating possible addresses for the shooter in multiple Southern states.

The chief said that one of the injured victims was in critical condition and the ages of the wounded ranged from the late teens to early 60s. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said that one victim had been released from a local hospital.

Late Thursday, authorities said they had found the gunman’s vehicle with a suspicious package inside. A bomb squad and hazmat team were called in and the area near the theater was evacuated. Minutes later, an Associated Press reporter on the scene heard a number of short bursts similar to firecrackers coming from that vicinity. Craft later said that the suspicious object was found to be harmless.

Col. Mike Edmonson of the Louisiana State Police said that there are no other suspects apart from the deceased shooter. He added that police believe the gunman fired shots only at the theater and had not waged an attack anywhere else beforehand.
