The Army's 3D-Printed Food Will Give Soldiers Personalized Meals

Three-dimensional printing is changing the way the Army treats injuries and builds bombs, and now the technology is poised to revolutionize how soldiers are fed. 3D printing will allow the Army to print food on demand, from pasta to pizza, and tailor its nutritional content to an individual soldier’s needs.

Feeding thousands of soldiers in the wilderness of a far-flung battlefield has never been an easy task. The food served to Army personnel needs to be unspoiled, nutritious, and reasonably tasty. For decades, soldiers have dined on Army-supplied Meals, Ready to Eat, but MREs are usually pretty unappetizing and limited to 24 options like “beef taco filling” served in a tinfoil bag. You couldn’t even get a pizza until last year when Army researchers developed a groundbreaking pizza that stays fresh for three years.

But 3D printing could change that. While most current methods for 3D printing food pile layers of nutritional goo on top of each other, the Army is looking to use ultrasonic agglomeration, which binds particles together by shooting ultrasonic waves at them. This approach, explained Army Magazine in its July issue, affords them great flexibility when it comes to printing varied meals—adding some additional options to the menu.

“You would like a sandwich, where I would like ravioli. You would print what you want and eliminate wasted food,” Mary Scerra, an Army food technologist at the Natick Soldier Research, Development, and Engineering Center (NSRDEC) in Massachusetts, told Defense One.

Huge Rise in US Terror Watch List in Recent Years

The number of people on the government’s database of known or suspected terrorists has doubled in recent years, according to new information released by the National Counterterrorism Center. From March 2010 to the end of 2013, the number has gone from 550,000 to roughly 1.1 million people.

The Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment, or TIDE, is a huge, classified database of people known to be terrorists, those who are suspected of having ties to terrorism, and in some cases those who are related to or are associates of known or suspected terrorists. It feeds to smaller lists that restrict peoples’ abilities to travel on commercial airlines to or within the U.S.

By Tim Fleischer.

Mount Sinai Hospital is performing tests on a patient who had recently traveled to a West African country where Ebola has been reported, the hospital says.

A male patient with high fever and gastrointestinal symptoms came to the hospital’s emergency room on Monday morning, officials said.

The hospital says the patient has been placed in strict isolation and is undergoing medical screenings to determine the cause of his symptoms.

“All necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of all patients, visitors and staff. We will continue to work closely with federal, state and city health officials to address and monitor this case, keep the community informed and provide the best quality care to all of our patients,” the hospital wrote in a statement.

Mt. Sinai is following what the Center for Disease Control recommended last week when they sent a Health Alert to doctors and hospitals.

ebola-guineaOverwhelmed by scale of outbreak: Deadly Ebola virus now ‘out of control,’ claim medics

By The Extinction Protocol.

“Lots of people in my family are dead. I left my home and I don’t know what to do,” said a Guinean Ebola refugee last week. Claiming over 730 lives and infecting over 1,300 people, the world’s biggest outbreak of Ebola is creeping across West Africa. Despite a recent lull, the pandemic is now worse than ever. Sheik Umar Khan, a leading Ebola expert died of the disease, two American medics were infected in Liberia and man collapsed and later died after a flight to Lagos, Nigeria where 69 people are now being held under observation to ensure the virus doesn’t get amongst the city’s 21 million population. Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia have been struggling to fight the deadly virus since March this year. According to Medecins Sans Frontieres, who deployed 552 staff in hotspots across the region, the epidemic is now officially ‘out of control.’ “The medical humanitarian organization is building a quarantine unit in Kenema, Sierra Leone, to where Irish doctor Gabriel Fitzgerald has just travelled. He says his team is overwhelmed with new Ebola patients. “The sooner a person receives treatment, the better their chances of recovery. People are dying in their villages without access to medical care,” he said. Unease and panic were unleashed across the globe as people feared the disease, thought to be passed on by fruit bats, could take to the skies and end up anywhere in the world, even Ireland.” The chances of that happening are slim. It’s not airborne. You can only catch the disease from close personal contact with someone through blood or bodily fluids. It’s not like TB, which you can catch if you are sitting seven rows in front of an infected person on a plane,” says Dr Graham Fry, founder of the Tropical Medical Bureau. “Though in most cases it takes less than 21 days for symptoms including fever, headache and vomiting to take hold,” he says.

When a friend of mine’s 23- year-old sister brought Lassa fever, an almost identical hemorrhagic fever which is spread by rodents, to mainland Europe on a flight from Accra in Ghana via Lisbon, and onto Frankfurt some years back, none of her fellow passengers or people who came in direct contact with her got the disease. She went to visit her father upon arrival in Germany and fell ill at his deathbed. He died on the top floor, while she was put into an isolation ward below. It was a huge media story and people on the flight and family members were sent to a special unit to receive close examination. She died after massive internal bleeding and was never buried, she was cremated so that the disease wouldn’t spread…

Should We Bring Ebola Patients Back to the States? Dr. Ben Carson Responds

By Kara Jones.

As Ebola cases continue to pop up across western Africa, many are beginning to wonder just how big of a threat this deadly virus is to the rest of the world. So far, two infected Americans have been flown to Atlanta’s Emory University Hospital for treatment. But was it a smart decision to bring these patients back to the U.S.?

Via AP:

The Ebola virus has killed more than 700 people in Africa and could have catastrophic consequences if allowed to spread, world health officials say. So why would anyone allow infected Americans to come to Atlanta?

The answer, experts say, is because Emory University Hospital is one of the safest places in the world to treat someone with Ebola. There’s virtually no chance the virus can spread from the hospital’s super-secure isolation unit.

And another thing, they say: medical workers risking their lives overseas deserve the best treatment they can get.

Liberia orders cremation of ebola victims

By Associated Press.

The deadly scourge of Ebola means people here no longer shake hands when greeting each other. In taxi cabs where people used to cram onto the laps of others, drivers now can carry only four people or risk fines.

Plastic buckets are selling at a record pace to people who fill them with chlorine to disinfect their hands.

And Monday Liberian health authorities ordered that all Ebola victims must be cremated as the virus blamed for killing at least 729 people across West Africa shows no sign of slowing down. At least 17 bodies have been abandoned on Monrovia’s streets in recent days, health officials say.

Bergdahl Roommate: Chairman of Joint Chiefs Told Us Bowe Was A Deserter

Then-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Michael Mullen admitted that Bowe Berghdal was a deserter, and said that he did not know why the military was focusing so much energy on trying to save him, according to one of Bergdahl’s platoon mates.

“The joint chief of staff, Admiral Mullen at the time. He came out to our unit and had Thanksgiving dinner, and he said, ‘Yeah he walked off, everybody knows he walked off, I don’t know why they’re trying to’” pretend that he didn’t, Bergdahl’s former infantry roommate Cody Full told The Daily Caller.

President Obama currently faces formal condemnation from Congress for illegally releasing five senior Taliban leaders from Guantanamo Bay in exchange for Bergdahl, who left his post near Afghanistan’s Pakistan border in 2009 and was captured by the Taliban and Haqqani terrorist network. The revelation that the military’s senior leader knew about Bergdahl’s desertion years in advance creates new questions about Obama’s conduct. Bergdahl recently returned to active duty with a desk job in San Antonio, Texas.

Bergdahl’s platoon searched for him at the expense of all other duties for more than two months, checking cars in an IED-strewn environment where villagers routinely hid the existence of anti-American insurgents.

“For us, we knew right away we were looking for him on our outpost, up to battalion level knew he had walked off,” Bergdahl platoon mate Matt Vierkant told TheDC, noting that a missing soldier alert was immediately sent out. “We knew he wasn’t taken, he walked off. Some children said he was crawling through the reeds.”

GOP: Happy Birthday Obama, Now Here's a Copy of Constitution to Read

Here’s the latest indication of how tough the political climate has become for President Obama: Even the Republican Party is raising money off his birthday today.

While Democrats for weeks have been using his 53rd to raise funds via email birthday cards, the Republican National Committee on Monday got into the action offering its donors to send the president a copy of the U.S. Constitution, a not so subtle reminder that the GOP believe the president is not enforcing key laws.

Most Lawless President Ever Thinks He’s Being Bullied by Congress

Here’s the good news: We are less than 100 days away from the November midterm elections. Here’s the bad news: Every day we get a clearer vision of Obama’s strategy for holding onto power. The last thing Obama and his progressive socialist administration wants is having to contend with a House and Senate not under his control. His preferred solution would be a return to his first two years where there was no need for leadership or governance — just absolute rule.

So just as with the 2012 election cycle, it’s not about running on policies and results, it’s about attacking and demonizing the opposition.

As reported by The Hill, “The White House’s emerging strategy for the midterm elections is to run against a “mean” Congress. Obama has a past of running against Bogeymen. In 2008, he campaigned against former President George W. Bush even has he competed for the White House with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the GOP’s nominee.”

We recently witnessed an almost maniacal Obama in full campaign mode telling Republicans to “stop hating” and sarcastically demonstrating his belligerence by saying, “sue me.” To the fawning masses it may be amusing, but to the rest of us, it’s out of control.

All this occurs while our economy lags, gas and food commodity prices are high, our country is facing an illegal alien invasion, there is a global national security crisis in just about every region of the world, and Obama is running around like a spoiled brat. He demonstrates a complete lack of leadership and adherence to the rule of law, and only a desire to rule.

$7,060,259,674,497.51–Federal Debt Up $7 Trillion Under Obama

The total federal debt of the U.S. government has now increased more than $7 trillion during the slightly more than five and a half years Barack Obama has been president.

That is more than the debt increased under all U.S. presidents from George Washington through Bill Clinton combined, and it is more debt than was accumulated in the first 227 years of this nation’s existence–from 1776 through 2003.

The total federal debt first passed the $7-trillion mark on Jan. 15, 2004, after President George W. Bush had been in office almost three years.

IRS Will Monitor 99 Churches on Behalf of Freedom From Religion Foundation to Avoid Another Lawsuit

0 (91)Here’s some funny business (and not the ‘haha’ kind) going on between the IRS and the Freedom From Religion Foundation. After the IRS presented a letter to the Justice Department that states 99 churches “merit high priority for examination,” the FFRF dropped their lawsuit against them.

The IRS also held private talks with the FFRF, purportedly, to assure them that the monitoring of churches will definitely happen.

Justice Department attorney, J. Christian Adams, explains on Fox News:

“They want them to convert theology to political. They want them to convert them to politics and say, “hey that’s not theology that’s political and you shouldn’t be talking like that.” And they wan to use the IRS as a weapon against christianity, against faith.”

Death Valley, Calif., which is known for being the world’s hottest location, maxed out at a relatively chilly 89 degrees on Sunday. This temperature – nearly 30 degrees below average – was its coolest high temperature on record for the date by a whopping 15 degrees. The previous record of 104 was set in 1945.

This was only the eighth time that a high in the 80s has occurred in Death Valley in July or August, and there hasn’t been a high less than 90 since 1984. Weather records in Death Valley go back to 1911.

Locations that were hotter than Death Valley yesterday include Spokane Wash. (93), Missoula, Mont. (91), Casper, Wy. (92), and Boise, Idaho (99).

Democrat Finds Something Sweet To Tax While Reminding Us What Freedom Doesn’t Look Like

By Kevin Boyd.

Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-Connecticut) has found another revenue stream for the federal government: sugar-sweetened soft drinks. Whether you call it pop, soda or coke, DeLauro wants to impose a 1 cent excise tax per teaspoon of caloric sweetener (either sugar or corn syrup) used in sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks, and sweet teas.

Elizabeth Harrington of the Washington Free Beacon writes that DeLauro has gained the support of activists who banned smoking indoors and other health advocates who called sodas “toxic.” The goal is to reduce soda consumption in the country.

From the Free Beacon:

DeLauro introduced the Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Tax Act, also known as the “SWEET Act,” on Wednesday, which would impose a 1 cent excise tax per teaspoon of caloric sweetener in soda, energy drinks, sports drinks, and sweet teas.

Rep. DeLauro: Tax Every Teaspoon of Sugar

By Eric Scheiner.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) introduced this week the Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Tax (SWEET Act), which aims to institute a tax of one cent per teaspoon – 4.2 grams – of sugar, high fructose corn syrup or caloric sweetener.

The measure (HB 5279), introduced Wednesday says, “A 20-ounce bottle of soda contains about 16 teaspoons of sugars. Yet, the American Heart Association recommends that Americans consume no more than six to nine teaspoons of sugar per day.”

Even though the manufacturers’ of the sweet drinks are targeted to pay the tax, the text of the bill itself notes that the goal is to reduce public consumption through a price increase.
