Growing Number of Dads Home with the Kids

Photo Credit: Aurimas / Creative Commons By Gretchen Livingston.

The number of fathers who do not work outside the home has risen markedly in recent years, up to 2 million in 2012.1 High unemployment rates around the time of the Great Recession contributed to the recent increases, but the biggest contributor to long-term growth in these “stay-at-home fathers” is the rising number of fathers who are at home primarily to care for their family.

The number of fathers who are at home with their children for any reason has nearly doubled since 1989, when 1.1 million were in this category.2 It reached its highest point—2.2 million—in 2010, just after the official end of the recession, which spanned from 2007 to 2009. Since that time, the number has fallen slightly, driven mainly by declines in unemployment, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data.3

While most stay-at-home parents are mothers, fathers represent a growing share of all at-home parents – 16% in 2012, up from 10% in 1989. Roughly a quarter of these stay-at-home fathers (23%) report that they are home mainly because they cannot find a job. Nearly as many (21%) say the main reason they are home is to care for their home or family. This represents a fourfold increase from 1989, when only 5% of stay-at-home fathers said they were home primarily to care for family.

Dissolving the Institution of Marriage

By Taylor Lewis.

For years, opponents of same-sex marriage fretted that the unleashing of gay nuptials would open the door for all types of sexual decadence. Last presidential cycle, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum was panned heavily for comparing gay marriage to polygamy at a New Hampshire stop on the campaign trail. After a college student questioned his vigorous opposition to same sex couples being wed, Santorum responded in turn: “If it makes three people happy to get married, based on what you just said, what makes that wrong?” The remark was met with boos from students and condemnation from the liberal press.

Less than two years later, Santorum ran a victory lap after a federal judge struck down a ban on polygamy in Utah. The ruling didn’t enshrine the right to polygamy in the state per se; it only held that polygamous individuals can’t be discriminated against under the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution. They still don’t have the right to marry, but give it time.

The judge’s decision was easily predictable. Shortly before the Supreme Court struck down the federal non-recognition of same-sex marriages last summer, one liberal writer had already moved on to advocating for legalized polygamy. The berating of conservative slippery-slope hysteria? Quickly forgotten for the sake of more freedom.

Since at least the Reagan Era, the early proponents of same-sex marriage in America assured traditional folks that they only wanted the same monogamous love enjoyed by heterosexuals. Andrew Sullivan, the passionate gay marriage supporter who broke cultural and political barriers as head of the New Republic, wrote in 1989 that marriage “provides an anchor, if an arbitrary and weak one, in the chaos of sex and relationships to which we are all prone.” It was this institution Sullivan wished to incorporate into gay life. While admitting that “gay leadership clings to notions of gay life as essentially outsider, anti-bourgeois, radical” he found being both “gay” and “bourgeois” to no longer be “an absurd proposition.”

Active Euthanasia Comes to North America

Photo Credit: Ostia / Creative CommonsThe poison has jumped across the Atlantic from Netherlands and Belgium: Quebec has legalized active euthanasia.

I have discussed the contents of new law at length previously and I don’t want to repeat myself. However, the bill did undergo some changes since I wrote about it, and there are certain sections of the new law that need to be emphasized, so here goes:

The euphemism for homicide in the law is “aid in dying,” which in turn, is defined as part of “end of life care.“

Receiving “end of life care”–including euthanasia–is now a positive right. From the law (my emphasis):

RIGHTS WITH RESPECT TO END-OF-LIFE CARE: 4. Every person whose condition requires it has the right to receive end-of-life care subject to the specific requirements established by this Act. Such care is provided to the person in a facility maintained by an institution, in a palliative care hospice or at home.

Fox News Poll: Republicans Have Edge in 2014 Midterm

Photo Credit: Fox NewsThe latest Fox News poll finds that if the 2014 midterm elections were held today, 43 percent of voters would back the Republican candidate in their House district, while 39 percent would vote for the Democrat.

Of course the election isn’t today. It’s five months away. And for the fifth straight time this year, the results on this congressional generic ballot question have reversed in our Fox News poll.

Last month, the Democratic candidate had the edge by three percentage points. In April, the Republican was up by three. In March, it was Democrats +2 and before that it was GOP +2.

Democratic pollster Chris Anderson says this indicates an unsettled environment among voters.

“That said,” Anderson adds, “most other findings in the poll suggest an increasingly favorable environment for the Republicans heading toward the midterms.”

Acting VA Secretary: 18 Vets On Phoenix Wait List Died

Photo Credit: David Wallace, The Arizona RepublicInvestigators have determined that more than 100,000 veterans nationwide were kept off waiting lists for medical appointments, and Acting Veterans Affairs Secretary Sloan Gibson said the nation will learn Monday how many patients were relegated to “secret lists.”

During a news conference Thursday at the Carl T. Hayden Medical Center in Phoenix, where the VA medical scandal erupted, Gibson also disclosed that at least 18 Arizona veterans died while awaiting doctor appointments, though it remains unclear whether the delayed care is to blame for those fatalities.

Gibson said he had details on 14 of the deaths and it appeared most had contacted the VA for “end of life care.”

“None of that excuses us,” said Gibson. “These lists were not being worked — inexcusable.”

Onlookers Steal Groceries From SUV After Driver Dies in Fatal Crash

Photo Credit: NaturalNews.comMost Americans are living in a fairytale where they think grocery stores will always have fully-stocked shelves and local police will always respond when they dial 911. In truth, despite the best efforts of our men and women in blue, society sits atop a thin veneer of what I call “feigned politeness,” underneath which festers the ever-present potential for social chaos: thievery, murder and violence.

Today a 23-year-old woman in Houston was killed in a car crash after pulling out of a private drive into fast-moving traffic. After she was killed, onlookers stole the groceries out of the back of her SUV.

As the Houston Chronicle reports (1):

“…eyewitnesses told police they saw people steal groceries out of the dead woman’s SUV.”

It’s not yet clear whether this happened while the mother lay dead in her SUV or after her body was removed. It’s difficult to imagine someone stealing groceries out of a vehicle once emergency responders arrive on the scene, so it seems more likely this theft took place while the woman’s dead body and injured children were still in the vehicle.

Senator Obama? Please, Not Another…

Photo Credit: AP / Jacquelyn MartinFLOTUS for Senate?

It wasn’t that long ago that such a slogan would seem absurd, but political wags are beginning to wonder whether Michelle Obama is mulling a run for Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk’s seat in 2016.

A Thursday column in Reuters suggests that Obama would be the only candidate with a large enough profile to unseat the Republican.

Admiral James Lyons: Hillary’s 2016 Campaign & Hillary Libya Visit Drove Rush for Ambassador Stevens to Set Up Benghazi Consulate Without Security

Photo Credit: Getty ImagesThe rush to “stand up” the Benghazi Consulate (resulting in inadequate security) was a plan to launch Hillary Clinton’s 2016 Presidential campaign, gone wrong, according to the investigation of Admiral James Lyons working with the Citizens’ Commission on Benghazi, formed by A.I.M. under Roger Aronoff.

The revelations were made on the Conservative Commandos Radio Show broadcasting on WNJC 1360 AM in Philadelphia, on its June 4, 2014 broadcast, by its host Rick Trader and co-host that day Jonathon Moseley. The entire recorded broadcast can be downloaded by using the left-click mouse function ”Save As” clicking here:

What was Ambassador Chris Stevens doing at the lightly-guarded, unsecured consulate in Benghazi, away from the more-secure U.S. Embassy at Tripoli? This remains a mystery about the terrorist attack on the Consulate on September 11, 2012.

Congressional testimony has already established that Hillary Clinton, then U.S. Secretary of State, ordered Ambassador Stevens to “stand up” a satellite Consulate in Benghazi and demanded this be done in a rush. Benghazi is on the other side of Libya from the Tripoli Embassy. But the reasons for this urgent project have never been disclosed or explained by the tight-lipped Obama Administration.

Now, Admiral James Lyons has uncovered that the U.S. State Department plan was for Hillary Clinton to visit Benghazi in October 2012 as a “photo op” or “victory lap” to show that the Obama Administration policy and her work as Secretary of State were successes in Libya.

Federal Double Standard on Endangered Species Laws?

Photo Credit: Fox News The federal government is not shy about prosecuting those who violate threatened and endangered species laws. But under a new Obama administration policy, wind farm operators are getting 30-year permits to kill protected species.

The government fined marine biologist Nancy Black $12,000 and sentenced her to three years probation for feeding a whale in Monterey Bay.

Just last month, US Fish and Wildlife cited 26-year- old tree trimmer Ernesto Pulido for violating the 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty Act for disturbing a nest of herons. Pulido was hired by the U.S. Postal Service to rid their parking lot in Oakland, Calif. of the birds and the droppings they left behind.

“It’s a violation of federal law,” said conservationist Lisa Owens Viani. “Nesting birds (herons) are protected under federal law.”

Viani arrived at the scene May 3 to find several adult herons circling the trees and five baby herons hiding under a postal truck. She took them to a wildlife rehabilitation center for blood work, fluids and feeding.

The Indians were robbed. They were conned into selling Manhattan for $24 of trinkets in 1626.

That was the worst trade in history. Until now.

President Barack Obama’s trade for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl now joins the infamous list of “Worst Trades in History.”

In the sports world there have been many legendary bad trades. Julius Irving. Kobe Bryant. Nolan Ryan. Hershel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings for an entire team of players and draft picks that led to three Super Bowl victories for the Dallas Cowboys.

Inside the Senate briefing on the Bergdahl prisoner swap: More frustration from Congress with a secretive Obama White House

By On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, FOX NEWS HOST: This is a FOX News alert. Just minutes ago, right behind us, on Capitol Hill, the Obama administration finished briefing the full Senate on the Bergdahl swap.

EPUBLICAN SENATOR SAXBY CHAMBLISS, who is the ranking member on the Intel Committee, just came from that classified session. He joins us.

Good evening, sir.

SEN. SAXBY CHAMBLISS, R-GA.: Hello, Greta. Good to be with you.

VAN SUSTEREN: Are you satisfied, sir, with what you learned in that classified briefing that the White House was right in not giving you notice that this was going to happen?

CHAMBLISS: No. I’m more convinced than ever, Greta, that the White House played this so close to the vest intentionally and made a determination not to give Congress notice. They — I still don’t know the reason why. I heard what they said today but it made no sense whatsoever. And in my opinion, they made a calculation early on in the process that we’re going to do this and no need to notify Congress.

Oregon School District to Offer Condoms to Students Starting in 6th Grade

Photo Credit: ben swannAn Oregon school district plans to offer condoms to students starting in sixth grade as part of an updated sex education policy aimed at decreasing teen pregnancy, sparking debate over whether 11-year-olds are too young for such a program.

The plan by the rural Gervais School District comes after a 2013 survey by nursing students found that 7 percent of district high school girls had experienced pregnancy and 42 percent of students reported “never” or “sometimes” using protection.

“Over the past few decades, teen pregnancy in our community has remained somewhat constant, but higher than the board felt comfortable with,” Superintendent Rick Hensel said in a blog post dated Monday.
The district school board approved the sex education policy earlier this month for sixth through 12th graders in the tiny town north of Salem, and Hensel said administrators would hash out details this summer to be implemented in the fall.

The board decided to include middle school students because the middle and high schools are close in proximity and run by the same administration – and because middle school girls are getting pregnant too.
