In South Carolina, Clinton Forces Try to Tap Obama Magic (+video)

Photo Credit: CNNTo hear some tell it, the 2008 South Carolina primary clash between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton was a few steps away from a full-blown race riot.

“It was unbelievable down here in 2007 and 2008,” said Bridget Tripp, a Democratic organizer from Lexington who supported Obama in that year’s primary. “Bill Clinton was going through downtown Columbia calling Barack Obama a racist.”

It never got that bad, of course. But in the runup to the contest and in its aftermath, the Clinton campaign scrambled to explain away comments that rankled the black community: Hillary Clinton seeming to downplay Martin Luther King Jr.’s role in passing the Civil Rights Act, Bill Clinton’s biting characterization of Obama’s campaign as “the biggest fairy tale I’ve ever seen” and a range of remarks from Clinton allies that seemed to belittle Obama’s achievements.

Bill Clinton’s remarks in particular went over so poorly that South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn, then the state’s highest-ranking African-American in Congress, went on national television and told the former president to “chill.” The morning after Obama’s crushing 28-point victory, Bill Clinton waved it off in glib terms, comparing Obama to Jesse Jackson, just another black candidate with black support.

The loss was a stinging defeat for the Clintons, a Southern power couple who viewed their longstanding friendships in the African-American community as crucial bulwark against any Democratic foe.

Media Expert Tim Graham: Fallon Biased for Obama (+video)

Photo Credit: APNew “Tonight” show host Jimmy Fallon is a “complete tool” for President Barack Obama and the Democrats, says Tim Graham, director of media analysis for the Media Research Center.

Fallon took over from former “Tonight” host Jay Leno, and former “Saturday Night Live” star Seth Meyers has now replaced Fallon as the “Late Night” host. Fallon’s and Meyers’ political leanings have been evident right from the start, Graham said on “The Steve Malzberg Show” on Newsmax TV.

Noting that Fallon is a big gain for Democrats, Graham said, “He’s a funny guy, people love him, but he is a complete tool for the Obamas. Obama can invite himself onto the Jimmy Fallon show and, of course, the Seth Meyers show starts tonight. One of his first guests, Joe Biden. Jimmy Fallon gets Michelle Obama, but Seth Meyers can only get Joe Biden,” Graham said Monday.

New PAC To Protect Tea Party Candidates Against GOP Establishment Attacks (+video)

Photo Credit: Gage SkidmoreU.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert says a new PAC he has created will raise funds to help tea party candidates unfairly under siege from the Republican rank-and-file — and insists it is not there to spark a GOP civil war.

“Some in the establishment of the Republican Party are saying, gee, this is wrong, but this is not declaring a war against Republican candidates. In fact, it is defensive,” the Texas Republican told “The Steve Malzberg Show” on Newsmax TV.

“There are people, including our speaker [John Boehner] who wanted to declare war on tea parties. These are conservatives who simply want elected officials to do what they promised when they got elected.

“[But] if you don’t go along with what the leadership says, they’re going to see that you don’t get any financial help, they’re not going to help you raise money.”

Susan Rice: Russian Military Intervention in Ukraine ‘Would be a Grave Mistake’ (+video)

Photo Credit: AP Photo/Efrem LukatskyAny Russian decision to send forces into Ukraine to restore a government it views as favorable “would be a grave mistake,” national security advisor Susan Rice said Sunday, after dramatic turns in the country’s standoff saw President Viktor Yanukovich effectively removed from office.

“It’s not in the interest of Ukraine or of Russia or of Europe or of the United States to see a country split,” Rice said on NBC’s Meet the Press. “It’s in nobody’s interests to see violence return and the situation escalate.”

Asked whether President Obama had told President Vladimir Putin to “back off” when the two spoke by phone on Friday, Rice replied, “The president’s message was, ‘Look, we have a shared interest in a Ukraine that remains unified, whole, independent, and is able to exercise the will of its people freely.’ At that point, Putin was in agreement.”

Russia and the U.S. have accused each other of interference in the crisis, which began when Yanukovich last November ditched a plan to strengthen economic and political relations with the European Union in favor of closer ties with Russia. Opposition supporters occupied Kiev’s independence square to protest the decision, which was cemented when Putin offered Yanukovich a $15 billion bailout.

Vilsack: Inner City ‘Minority’ Child ‘Doesn’t Even Know What a Tomato Is’ (+video)

Photo Credit: CNSNews.com/Penny StarrAt the USDA’s annual Agricultural Outlook Forum on Thursday during a panel discussion about attracting young people to the farming industry, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack asked a panelist how she would convince an inner city “minority” child who “doesn’t even know what a tomato is.”

“Emily, I want you to envision an inner city child,” Vilsack said to Emily Oakley, interim director of the National Young Farmer Coalition. “Could be African American, could be Hispanic, could be Native American, Asian, whatever, a minority. You’re talking to that child.

“That child doesn’t even know what a tomato is much less what you are talking about,” Vilsack said. “I want you to convince that kid that he ought to think about farming.”

Oakley replied, “The real issue is how do you get a kid to know what a tomato is” after explaining how best to get kids to know their fruits and vegetables.

Cruz to CNN: Global Warming Not Supported by Data (+video)

Photo Credit: APBy CNN Chief Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash and CNN Senior Congressional Producer Deirdre Walsh.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, questions whether global warming is real, arguing that the “data are not supporting what the advocates are arguing.”

“The last 15 years, there has been no recorded warming. Contrary to all the theories that – that they are expounding, there should have been warming over the last 15 years. It hasn’t happened,” said Cruz.

Cruz spoke to CNN in an exclusive interview following an event here to promote his new energy plan, which he says he will formally introduce in the Senate next week.

When pressed about the fact that the arctic is melting, and whether that helps prove climate change is real, Cruz dismissed it.

“Other parts are going up. It is not – you know, you always have to be worried about something that is considered a so-called scientific theory that fits every scenario. Climate change, as they have defined it, can never be disproved, because whether it gets hotter or whether it gets colder, whatever happens, they’ll say, well, it’s changing, so it proves our theory,” argued Cruz.

Photo Credit: SUSAN PFANNMULLERAl Gore brings climate change message to Kansas City

By Brian Burnes.

Al Gore has been known for his climate change warnings since the 2006 film “An Inconvenient Truth.”

But the former vice president, speaking Saturday in Kansas City, cited many more recent examples how heavy use of fossil fuels is contributing to extreme weather events and trends, in his view.

Gore filled a Westin Crown Center ballroom with a 90-minute presentation, using photos and videos to illustrate a litany of floods, wildfires, torrential rains, droughts, dust storms, rising sea levels and increasing world temperatures.

To those attending the Folk Alliance International conference, he noted examples of flooding in locations both remote and closer to home, such as in Manitou Springs, Colo., where high water barreled down mountain highways last year, carrying cars along with it.

“They had never seen anything like this in Manitou Springs,” Gore said.

Photo Credit: YouTube As we reported last week, a local news station found Border Patrol documents that indicated that thousands of OTMs — “Other Than Mexicans” — have been caught crossing the Mexican border into the U.S., including some known terrorists.

But since that report, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has DENIED that there is any “credible evidence” that any terrorists have crossed over.

Video: Cops Arrest Jogging Woman Because She Couldn’t Hear Them

Photo Credit: Chris Quintero / My Fox Austin ScreenshotMembers of the University of Texas-Austin community are outraged that cops arrested an unnamed jogger who ignored police orders because she was wearing earbuds and couldn’t hear them.

The arrest happened at an intersection near the UT campus. Cops had been camped out at the intersection, issuing dozens of citations to people for jaywalking.

They planned to ticket a jogging woman, and ordered her to stop. But she was wearing earbuds and couldn’t hear them.

The officers chased the woman down and grabbed her arm from behind. Not knowing what was happening, the woman pulled away from the officer. This meant that she was resisting, and the woman soon found herself sitting on the ground in handcuffs.
