Epic CMA Awards: Obamacare Mockery and Duck Dynasty Appearance (+video)

Photo Credit: Wade Payne/Invision/APWednesday night’s CMA (Country Music Association) awards opened up with a bang, incorporating Kenny Rogers, the Robertson family from “Duck Dynasty,” and even a little Obamacare mockery.

That’s right, hosts Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood had a special segment and even song mocking the failed health care rollout that featured the pair pretending to sign up for Obamacare and then crooning about the failure.

It all started while the pair was singing a new version of “Why Can’t We Be Friends” that faked feuds between some of country music’s biggest stars (including Kenny Rogers) and Paisley stopping abruptly to complain about back pain. That’s when Underwood suggested trying to sign up for Obamacare.

“I started signing up last Thursday and I’m almost done,” she said with a fake smile. “Let’s go to the website and get you signed up.”

That elicited laughs from the crowd as the pair went and grabbed a computer.

Population Control: Dan Savage Says ‘Abortion Should be Mandatory for 30 Years’ (+video)

Photo Credit: Daily Caller Self-styled anti-bullying advocate Dan Savage told a giggling and applauding audience in Australia that “abortion should be mandatory for 30 years” on Monday during a panel discussion on Christianity, marriage and sex.

Savage made his remarks during a program titled “Q&A, Adventures in Democracy” broadcasted from the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on Monday in response to the question: ”Which so-called dangerous idea do you each think would have the greatest potential to change the world for the better if it were implemented?”

“Population control: There’s too many g**da** people on the planet,” Savage said as the audience burst into applause at his predictable response. “You know, I’m pro-choice. I believe that women should have a right to control their bodies. Sometimes in my darker moments, I’m anti-choice. I think abortion should be mandatory for about 30 years.”

Savage, creator of the “It Gets Better” viral video anti-suicide crusade on behalf of gay teens, takes a hateful, violent pro-death position toward everyone who irritates him, from unborn babies to hapless Green Party candidates standing in the way of total Democratic domination.

No Surprise: Chris Christie Re-Elected as New Jersey Governor (+video)

Photo Credit: Mel Evans/APBy Jennifer De Pinto, Sarah Dutton and Rebecca Kaplan.

To call it a “race” is almost unfair.

Gov. Chris Christie, R-N.J., was re-elected as New Jersey governor in a landslide – 60-39 percent over his Democratic challenger, state Sen. Barbara Buono – and virtually no one ever thought the outcome might be different. For months, Christie held a commanding lead in the polls as Buono failed to get her campaign off the ground.

Christie was re-elected with widespread support from men, women, independents, members of his own party, and even three in 10 Democrats, according to CBS News exit polls.

“I’m the luckiest guy in the world,” Christie said, flanked by his family, during his acceptance speech in Asbury Park, N.J.

Christie’s Democratic challenger, state Sen. Barbara Buono, won the votes of liberals, African-Americans, and young voters, but that was not nearly enough to stop Christie’s pursuit of a second term.

Why National Democrats Rolled Over for Chris Christie

By Patricia Murphy.

If Gov. Chris Christie wins reelection Tuesday by even a fraction of the margin predicted by New Jersey pollsters, he’ll owe his easy victory to one group in particular—national Democrats, who all but ignored his race against Democratic state Sen. Barbara Buono.

From President Obama, who twice toured New Jersey with Christie after Hurricane Sandy and then failed to endorse Christie’s challenger, to the Democratic National Committee, which sent just one staffer to the state to fortify local efforts, to major donors and high-profile party leaders such as Bill and Hillary Clinton, powerful Democrats have stayed on the sidelines in the blue state contest that top brass deemed a loser from the start.

The result is a Republican governor cruising to double-digit reelection in a state where Democrats have a 700,000-voter advantage but are losing or breaking even with Christie among independents, women, Hispanics, and young voters, all groups Democrats typically dominate and which Republicans will need to win over nationally to win the White House. The script for Chris Christie 2016 writes itself, and Democrats will have helped pen the first draft.

“When we started looking at his reelect numbers, he was just above 50 percent. That meant he was formidable but movable,” said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute. “Early on, Barbara Buono could have appealed to the national electorate by saying, ‘Look, we need to bloody this guy up before 2016 because he’s the biggest challenge going into that race.’ But she never was able to articulate that…so Democrats stayed out of that race and Chris Christie basically got a free pass.”

National Democrats stand by the decision not to play seriously in New Jersey, according to several who spoke with The Daily Beast. The calculation was two-fold, they said. First, the money required just to land a punch on Christie in the pricey New York and Philadelphia media markets could fund an entire campaign somewhere or sometime else when a Democrat had a chance of winning.

Gunman Found Dead After Trapping Hundreds In NJ Mall Overnight

Photo Credit: MPD01605A 20-year-old man wearing a motorcycle helmet and dressed in all black walked into a busy New Jersey mall minutes before it closed Monday night and began shooting, sending terrified customers running and trapping hundreds more in the building overnight as police searched for him.

Hours later, he was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in a remote area of the building, officials said Tuesday morning. His brother spoke outside the family’s home later and said it was all “an act of self-indulgence.”

No one was injured in the gunfire at Westfield Garden State Plaza Mall in Paramus, and authorities said there was evidence to suggest the gunman, identified as Richard Shoop, never had any intention of shooting anyone.

Shoop fired six rounds, striking an elevator, escalator and several store facades along a 300-yard path at about 9:30 p.m. Monday. He was using a Sig Sauer rifle modified to look like an AK-47 that he stole from his brother earlier in the day, officials said.

Paramus Mayor Richard LaBarbiera said he was told that Shoop said to people in the mall “don’t worry, just get out of the way.”

Press Secretary Jay Carney to ABC News Reporter: “I Give Up” (+video)

Photo Credit: APFresh questions about whether the White House deceived Americans with claims they could bypass the broken HealthCare.gov website by using the phone or mailing in an application provoked an exasperated response Monday from White House press secretary Jay Carney.

“I give up,” Carney told ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl, accusing the White House reporter of speaking “in tones of dramatic revelation” to inflate a story.

The exchange centered around documents released by House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) on Monday.

Meeting notes from the administration “war room” handling the rollout of ObamaCare showed that consumers who called the ObamaCare hotline or applied for insurance would still have their information eventually entered on the glitchy HealthCare.gov website, which has been plagued by technical problems since its launch on Oct. 1.

“The paper applications allow people to feel like they are moving forward in the process and provides another option; at the end of the day, we are all stuck in the same queue,” one official wrote.

Sen. Dan Coats: Americans Will Be Stuck on ‘Titanic’ Obamacare (+video)

Photo Credit: YouTube The problems with Obamacare run much more deeply than the glitches on its expensive, faulty website — and fixing the site’s technological problems won’t heal the wounds being caused by the health insurance law, says Indiana Sen. Dan Coats.

“The failure of [the] Obamacare launch is just the tip of the iceberg,” said Coats, giving Saturday’s GOP weekly address. “Unless we act, Americans will be stuck on board this Titanic.”

Obamacare launched one month ago, on Oct. 1, and many Americans still can’t go online and sign up, despite promises by the White House and congressional Democrats that the insurance exchanges would be ready to go.

“The president even told the American public that signing up online would be as easy as a few simple keystrokes,” said Coats. “Perhaps the President hasn’t tried logging onto the website himself because he and his political appointees are not required to join Obamacare.”

But the rest of the country doesn’t have that choice, and the few that have been able to access the online exchanges are “experiencing sticker shock,” Coats said.

TSA Agent Killed During LAX Shooting (+video)

Photo Credit: Grant Wickes/Flickr A gunman armed with an assault rifle entered a terminal at Los Angeles International Airport today, killed a TSA agent, and penetrated deep into the terminal before he was captured by police.

Five other people, including three other TSA officers, were injured in the incident.

The shooting sent hundreds of passengers streaming out of the terminal with many fleeing onto the airport runway. Dozens of flights to and from the airport were delayed or cancelled. It also triggered a “tactical alert” for the Los Angeles Police Department.

The shooting began around 9:20 a.m. in the usually crowded terminal.

The shooter, initially identified as Paul Ciancia, pulled an assault rifle from a bag and blasted his way past airport screeners, said Los Angeles World Airports Police Chief Patrick Gannon.

Victory for Bored Air Travelers Everywhere: FAA Lifts Ban on Electronics Use (+video)

Photo Credit: Sean MacEnteeIn a victory for bored air travelers everywhere, federal aviation regulators gave airlines the go-ahead Thursday to let passengers keep their iPads, Kindles and other electronic gadgets switched on during takeoffs and landings — a change that had airlines jockeying to be the first to make the switch.

JetBlue said it would carry out the loosened policy “as quickly as we receive approval from the Federal Aviation Administration, which can be as early as this afternoon.” That apparently hadn’t happened by early evening, however.

Delta Air Lines, which boasted of being the first carrier to file the necessary paperwork with regulators, said it hoped its passengers could see the change as soon as Friday. American Airlines said it will file its own plan with the FAA that day as well. Virtually all other major U.S. airlines said they’re working as fast as they can.

The FAA wouldn’t confirm anybody’s optimistic timing, and agency chief Michael Huerta told reporters that the airlines will first have to conduct tests to make sure the gizmos’ radio signals won’t interfere with their planes’ electronics. Still, airlines had been preparing for a decision such as this and will most likely try to roll out changes as soon as possible, with their eye on the Christmas travel season.

The changes don’t mean you’ll have to put up with a seatmate who yammers on his iPhone for the entire trip from Dulles to LAX. Cellphone calls will still be banned in flight.
