Millions of 4th of July Travelers Face Potential Storm-Related Delays Across U.S.

Fourth of July travelers are in for traffic and flight delays this week as a cold front pushing across the US is forecast to bring storms to the eastern half of the country, which could culminate in a washout on July Fourth for the Southeast.

AAA is predicting a record-breaking 72.2 million Americans will travel for the holiday, due in part to America’s birthday falling on a Friday this year, creating a three-day weekend.

The FOX Forecast Center is tracking unsettled weather ahead of a cold front moving across the country early this week. For those hoping to get an early start on the celebration, travel disruptions are possible early this week from the Ohio Valley to the Southeast.

On Monday, as the cold front sags across New England, some stronger thunderstorms are possible across major cities from Tampa in Florida to Cleveland in Ohio to Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. These storms could cause ripple-effect delays across the country for airline travelers.

By Tuesday, the tough travel conditions will extend to the Northeast flight hubs as storms fire along the Interstate 95 corridor. Thunderstorms could impact travel up and down this region, including cities such as New York, Boston, Washington, Baltimore, Atlanta and Tallahassee, Florida. DHS Insanity: ‘Perfect Storm’ of ‘Violent Extremist-White Supremacists’ Is Imminent

By WND. A Homeland Security bulletin obtained by ABC talks about “violent extremists” and the July 4th holiday.

It warned “attacks” against a “range of potential targets.” With no warning, of course. Those “domestic violent extremists” – aka DVEs, the feds said, are motivated by “violent ideologies” and the “ethnically motivated violent extremist-white supremacists,” or those RMVE-WSs, were sharing information about “mass gatherings.” AND “law enforcement officers.”

“We have the perfect storm,” ABC was told by a “senior law enforcement official.”

So the network posted online: “‘Perfect storm’: Bulletin warns of extremist violence as pandemic restrictions lift.”

However, buried down in the report was the perhaps-significant comment that, “no specific plot has been identified for Independence Day,” but that the warning “ominously” said federal officials are seeing “evidence of planning” by radicals. DHS Raises Alarms over Potential For Summer Violence Pegged to August Conspiracy Theory

By CNN. . .In a closed-door meeting last Wednesday, DHS officials briefed lawmakers on the role that misinformation and disinformation play in creating circumstances for people to act violently, according to a congressional source familiar with the briefing. . .

The department has “no evidence” of a threat associated with the supposed date of Trump’s return to office, but historically some domestic violent extremists “have conducted violence in furtherance of conspiracy theories,” the bulletin said.

The bulletin also assessed the possibility that domestic terrorists might seek to exploit the easing of Covid-19 restrictions in order to attack a range of potential targets. The bulletin and briefing were first reported by Politico. (Read more from “DHS Raises Alarms over Potential For Summer Violence Pegged to August Conspiracy Theory” HERE)

Watch: Communists Burn American Flag, Assault Secret Service Outside White House

Members of the Revolutionary Community Party burned an American flag outside of the White House on Thursday shortly before President Donald Trump’s “Salute to America” speech. They then threw the flag on multiple Secret Serviced agents.

A veteran grabbed the half-burned flag and attempted to put it out, clearly upset at the Communists’ gesture. Secret Service eventually used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.

According to the Washington Examiner, flag-burning activist Gregory “Joey” Johnson and two others were arrested for the stunt.

Johnson made a name for himself when he won a 1989 Supreme Court case that made flag-burning legal. He recently received a $225,000 settlement from Cleveland, Ohio for being arrested for bringing a flag at the 2016 Republican convention.

Trump, Protesters Gear up for an Untraditional July Fourth; Dem Critics Attack Celebration

By AP. In a sweltering capital threatened by storms, the traditional Fourth of July parade Thursday served as a warm-up act to a distinctly nontraditional evening event at the Lincoln Memorial, where President Donald Trump made plans to command the stage against the backdrop of a show of military muscle.

Protesters unimpressed by his “Salute to America” program inflated a roly-poly balloon depicting Trump as an angry, diaper-clad baby.

With his decision to add his own production to the usual festivities, Trump set himself up to be the first president in nearly seven decades to address a crowd at the National Mall on Independence Day. “I will speak on behalf of our great Country!” he said in a morning tweet. “Perhaps even Air Force One will do a low & loud sprint over the crowd.” (Read more from “Trump, Protesters Gear up for an Untraditional July Fourth” HERE)

Hillary Clinton Bashes Donald Trump’s Fourth Of July Military Extravaganza

By Huffington Post. Hillary Clinton is speaking out against President Donald Trump’s flashy display of military might for the Fourth of July, adding her voice to widespread criticisms of the event.

“We need a strong national defense, but a president shouldn’t need it next to him in a parade to show his patriotism,” she wrote Thursday in a tweet.

Trump has been accused of hijacking this year’s festivities in Washington, D.C., where he plans to showcase tanks and fighter jets for his “Salute to America” at the Lincoln Memorial. . .

The Pentagon appears to be attempting to avoid bad press related to the event. It reportedly distributed instruction cards to troops, reminding them to be careful when speaking to reporters and coaching them to express pride in their jobs and their tanks. Uh Oh, Guess Who Had the Betsy Ross Flag at His Inauguration

As you’ve heard by now, Nike decided to pull the sale of a Betsy Ross American flag themed sneaker this week after woke and washed up athlete Colin Kaepernick complained it is tied to racism.

But there’s just one huge problem with that argument:

Why Liberals Need to Shut Their Faces About Tanks Appearing During Trump’s Independence Day Event

Right now, we have a near Chernobyl-level style blow up over tanks and armored vehicles being part of the Fourth of July festivities this week. President Trump ordered it. It was a great decision. And the fact that the Left is triggered by this means that he should have ordered more tanks for the event. Tanks have been present for victory parades before. The optics is fine. No one cares about that. Americans are patriotic and they like seeing tanks. The only people who have problems with all of this are the Democratic Party and their allies in the media because Trump has taken over the event. He can do that. He should do that. And the Left just needs to shut their face over this.

If a Democrat took over this event and put tanks on display, there would be no criticism. After the Democratic debates, I don’t want to hear lectures from Democrats about patriotism. They care more about illegal aliens than citizens. That was made explicitly clear.

. . .[I]t’s a tank. Get over it. What do these morons think is going to happen? A coup? This is why no one trusts the media. It’s overreactions to this, among many other things they do poorly. They’ve shown they cannot cover this White House properly and this was a guaranteed move that would trigger the Left. Again, elections have consequences. We won. You lost. This isn’t Tiananmen either. Just shut up, watch the tanks, the fireworks, and enjoy the Fourth, liberal media if you can, you horrible excuses for human beings. Hollywood Freaks over Trump’s ‘Salute to America’ Event

A slew of Hollywood figures freaked out on Wednesday over President Donald Trump’s highly anticipated “Salute to America” event, scheduled to kick off on July 4th, saying it’s “all out of his Nazi playbook.”

“In the face of a humanitarian crisis, that this malignant narcissist would steal taxpayer dollars to stage a partisan display of Autocracy to massage his damaged psyche is nothing short of sociopathic,” left-wing director Rob Reiner said Wednesday.

President Trump in February announced that he intended to hold a massive event in Washington, D.C., on Independence Day.

“HOLD THE DATE! We will be having one of the biggest gatherings in the history of Washington, D.C., on July 4th. It will be called “A Salute To America” and will be held at the Lincoln Memorial. Major fireworks display, entertainment and an address by your favorite President, me!” the president said.

. . .

Indeed, the “Salute to America” event is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. ET on Thursday and will feature remarks from President Trump, military aircraft flyovers, and performances by each branch of the military.

Will American Self-Government Fail?

The Fourth of July holiday celebrates the beginning of the American Revolution, not its successful conclusion. And yet we probably would never have heard of the Declaration of Independence or Thomas Jefferson if George Washington and his French allies had not defeated the British five years later.

There were fairweather patriots even then, opportunistic Americans with a wet finger always raised to the breeze. And so the British commander, Lord Cornwallis, picked up a lot of American volunteers in the Carolinas after he had some battlefield success against the patriots.

Cornwallis at Yorktown

But the British and their Loyalists were cornered and outnumbered at Yorktown, and the French fleet blocked any potential British naval attempt to break the siege.

Even in defeat, the haughty Royalists tried to dictate terms. At the ceremony of capitulation, the British general resisted any act of submission to Washington and attempted instead to surrender his sword to the French commander, Rochambeau.

But Rochambeau understood the political importance of the moment, shook his head, and refused the sword. He gestured toward Washington, whose right it was to accept the British surrender.

Washington, in turn, refused to take the British sword. Lord Cornwallis had sent a subordinate in his place, which compounded the insult. And so Washington called Gen. Benjamin Lincoln forward to receive the sword.

It was an amazing turnabout for Lincoln who, the previous year, had been forced to surrender Charleston and its 5,500 defenders to the British commander Henry Clinton. It reminds me of when Gen. Douglas MacArthur summoned an emaciated Gen. Jonathan Wainwright to the deck of the U.S.S. Missouri to take Japan’s surrender in 1945.

High and Mighty in Defeat

It’s not unprecedented for defeated generals to cling to grandiosity even in abject defeat. As the Civil War siege of Vicksburg dragged on, starving residents slaughtered their milk cows, then their horses and mules, then their dogs. Finally they were reduced to trapping and boiling rats. Confederate Gen. John Pemberton wrote his Union counterpart Ulysses Grant that he was prepared to hold out “indefinitely” against Grant’s siege.

But Grant had learned from captured soldiers and local civilians that Vicksburg was starving. It was here that he cemented his nickname “Unconditional Surrender” Grant, and he squeezed Vicksburg like a python until Pemberton surrendered the city and its garrison on Fourth of July.

Whether you’re a general or a monarch, you get accustomed to deference, to having your own way. You cease to think of your privileges and prestige as the outcome of negotiation. You certainly don’t think it’s up for a vote. But that’s true of all hyper-entitled people. They rarely respect the process enough to concede defeat in a fair fight. The only legitimate outcome, for them, is to win.

Respecting the People

America has, until recently, been an exception to that pattern. There is a lovely American political tradition of high-minded concession speeches. I still remember Jimmy Carter’s wise observation after Ronald Reagan defeated him in 1980 that “in a democracy, the people always win.”

Even Al Gore, not my favorite person, gave an honorable (if overdue) concession speech after the Supreme Court ruled against him in 2000. He joked that “it’s time for me to go,” which was funny because it’s the line he and Bill Clinton used against Republicans eight years earlier.

But America has changed. Many of our neighbors don’t respect election results anymore. When Donald Trump won in 2016, Democrats wanted to surrender their sword to John McCain, Jeb Bush, anybody but the guy who won the election.

Like the ragtag frontier militiamen who tamed the British infantry, we Deplorables are considered undeserving of sovereignty, unfit for self-government. American elites are frantically importing new Tories from the Third World to denounce us, to outvote us, to help them put down our rebellion. Now it’s we who are under siege.

Decency and Patriotism Under Siege

We may have to boil a few rats, but it’s our duty to outlast the siege. We do not have a right to surrender to these people who have malignant intentions for our grandchildren. It’s time to dig deep and call on the Spirit of ’76.

As Ben Franklin reportedly said that summer in Philadelphia, “we must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.”

On Freedom and a Fourth of July Abroad; Why You Should Still Be Proud to Be an American

This will be my second consecutive Fourth of July spent outside the United States.

Last year, I celebrated our nation’s birthday in Mariupol, Ukraine. It’s a city only a few miles from the front lines of the still-simmering war in Ukraine.

I had burgers and beer with an eclectic group that evening—a Swedish sniper, two former French Foreign Legion soldiers, two former U.S. Army Rangers, and war correspondents from Australia, Belgium, and the United States.

The war was still there, only a few miles away. We could get to it in a 20-minute car ride.

The occasional thud of a mortar or artillery round from nearby Shyrokyne filled in for the fireworks. Audible reminders that Ukrainian soldiers were (and are) still fighting to achieve the things we celebrate every Fourth of July—freedom, democracy, and a chance to pursue happiness.

It’s almost ritual to express gratitude for the American way of life, or to thank a veteran or a soldier on holidays like Independence Day. The rehearsed nature of it all isn’t the result of insincerity; it’s just that many of us living in the United States have never tasted the alternative.

We’ve never actually lived in a place that isn’t free—a place like eastern Ukraine where families still die in the night from Russian artillery. Seeing such things makes you want to kiss the ground when you finally come back home.

Celebrations in war always seem more passionate. There’s a little bit of that end-of-days feeling like it’s officially time to eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow isn’t a given. It was like that in Mariupol last year.

One year later, the war hasn’t ended. Ukraine is still waiting for that tomorrow. Artillery and small arms are still fired in anger every day along the hundreds of miles of trenches and fortified checkpoints spread throughout the Donbas. Soldiers in opposing camps still peer at each other across no man’s land. It’s still a war. People are still dying.

Yet, I retain hope Ukraine will one day celebrate its Independence Day like we do. One day the explosions will be from fireworks and not weapons of war.

Common Thread

This past year I visited Tibetan freedom fighters living in exile in India and Nepal, veterans of a secret CIA-backed guerrilla campaign against China during the Cold War.

In eastern Ukraine I visited Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines against Russian aggression. And in Iraq I embedded with Kurdish peshmerga soldiers on the front lines against ISIS outside Mosul.

A common thread united these disparate bands of soldiers divided by culture, history, and geography. For all of them, the United States symbolized what they were fighting for.

Some of the Ukrainian soldiers I met on the front lines wore American flags on their uniforms. For Ukrainians, the U.S. flag long had been a symbolic pushback against the Soviet Union and the Kremlin’s authoritarian rule.

And now, 25 years after the fall of the USSR, as Ukraine again finds itself on the receiving end of Russian aggression, some have turned to symbols of America once more as a way to represent their independence and annoy their enemies.

I met one Ukrainian soldier at a machine gun nest in the trenches who wore a Ronald Reagan Presidential Library T-shirt. I asked why he was wearing that shirt in combat. He told me: “Because Reagan won the Cold War, and it would piss Putin off.”

The Tibetan freedom fighters I met, now old men living in solitude in lonely Himalayan villages, told me U.S. military support inspired them to fight back against China’s invasion and genocide.

These soldiers, many of whom were former Buddhist monks, fought the mechanized might of China’s People’s Liberation Army while on horseback and with World War I rifles.

“I have a deep appreciation and a great respect for America,” Sonam Dorjee, an 81-year-old former Tibetan resistance fighter told me during an interview last year in McLeod Ganj, India.

‘Friends Forever’

This May, I embedded with Kurdish peshmerga soldiers on the front lines outside Mosul. I saw smiles creep over the Kurds’ faces as U.S. warplanes pummeled Islamic State fighters a couple miles away across no man’s land.

For the older peshmerga soldiers, the sound of U.S. jets held special significance. They remember how Saddam Hussein’s warplanes used to inspire terror.

Before a U.S.-led coalition deposed him, the Iraqi dictator killed hundreds of thousands of Kurds from the air with chemical weapons and conventional bombs in operations such as the genocidal al-Anfal campaign.

Now, the peshmerga rejoice at the sound of jet engines, knowing the crackling roar symbolizes their American ally punishing the enemy.

“We will be friends with America forever for the help they’ve given us,” peshmerga Gen. Omar Hama Ali Farag told me on the front lines outside Mosul. He went on:

We had the Anfal genocide and many sufferings, but the peshmerga have always seen America as our friend. We could have never gotten rid of Saddam without George W. Bush. And we can never have our independence without America’s help.

North Star

Our country’s flag and the men and women who wear it on their uniforms are still seen as a force for good in many places around the world.

That was evident in February as I traveled with a U.S. Army Stryker convoy across the Baltics. The convoy, called Dragoon Ride, was meant to show U.S. resolve to defend NATO’s Baltic members from Russia.

Along the way, thousands of Estonians, Latvians, and Lithuanians lined the roads waving American flags to welcome our troops.

Fathers had children on their shoulders. Young women blew kisses to the troops. At each stop, in each little village, hundreds of local people gathered to take selfies with the American soldiers and shake their hands.

I wish you could have seen it; it would have made you proud to be an American.

Maintaining a dominant military with a global presence is not just about quantifiable metrics of national defense or international stability. Our military is also the torchbearer for our country’s values and a beacon of hope for people in times of peril.

On the Fourth of July we celebrate the achievement of a dream that, whether we know it or not, still serves as a North Star to people around the world brave enough to fight for a better life. (For more from the author of “On Freedom and a Fourth of July Abroad” please click HERE)
