‘People Will Die’: There’s Another Supply Chain Crisis

From groceries to baby formula and microchips to cold medicine for children, the supply chain issues that have arisen and grown into crises on President Biden and his administration’s watch are nothing new. But worsening shortages in the supply of drugs used to treat cancers are drawing dire warnings from medical professionals and those who rely on such medical interventions to save lives.

According to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, shortages of critical drugs are “the worst they’ve been in a decade” due to “[quality control issues, selected plant closures and other manufacturing woes” that have seen oncology drugs “hit particularly hard in recent months,” Axios reported Tuesday.

“People will die from this shortage, for sure,” came another stark warning from the University of Alabama’s Jonathan McConathy in The Wall Street Journal.

Among the medicines running critically low or being rationed are chemotherapy drug methotrexate, cisplatin, and fluorouracil. Already, Pluvicto — a life-extending drug used in cases of metastatic prostate cancer — has run out and won’t be available to patients for months, Axios added. BCG, used in bladder cancer treatments, was also “being rationed or was not available for use at all.” (Read more from “‘People Will Die’: There’s Another Supply Chain Crisis” HERE)

Baby Formula Recalled Nationwide over Possible Bacterial Contamination

Consumer goods company Reckitt announced a recall of baby formula products across the United States on Sunday due to possible bacterial contamination.

The company said two batches of ProSobee Simply Plant-Based Infant Formula may have been cross-contaminated with Cronobacter sakazakii, a species often linked to powdered formulas and possibly deadly to infants, according to a report from the CDC. Reckitt will therefore recall 145,000 cans that were manufactured between August 2022 and September 2022 and then distributed throughout the United States.

“We are committed to the highest level of quality and safety and it is for this reason that we have taken this extraordinary measure,” Reckitt said in a statement. “After a thorough investigation, we have identified the root cause, which was linked to a material from a third party. We have taken all appropriate corrective actions, including no longer sourcing this material from the supplier. The health and safety of infants is our highest priority.”

The recall comes roughly one year after Abbott Nutrition temporarily shuttered a baby formula facility in Sturgis, Michigan, and initiated a voluntary recall of several products. The absence of EleCare, a formula for children who are unable to digest other products, was especially worrisome to parents and government officials. The White House tried to alleviate the shortage with “Operation Fly Formula,” through which the military imported baby formula from Europe.

The recall was launched after the FDA found standing water, roof leaks, bacteria growths, and inadequate hygiene in the Abbott facility, which was closed between February 2022 and June 2022. Several babies across the country had reportedly been impacted by bacterial infections. (Read more from “Baby Formula Recalled Nationwide over Possible Bacterial Contamination” HERE)

Shock Claim: Tester Says He ‘Pushed FDA Commissioner Months Ago’ on Baby Formula; FDA Has Known About Formula Shortage Since February

By Breitbart. On Friday’s broadcast of CNN’s “New Day,” Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) said that he pressed the head of the Food and Drug Administration “months ago” on the baby formula issue and stated that right now the White House is “taking appropriate steps” to fix the issue and is “taking it seriously and I think they’re moving forward in the right direction.”

Co-host John Berman asked, “What are you hearing from Montanans about baby formula?”

Tester answered, “Big concern. And we need to do everything we can do to right this ship. It’s — literally is a life and death situation in many cases.” (Read more from “Shock Claim: Tester Says He ‘Pushed FDA Commissioner Months Ago’ on Baby Formula” HERE)

Rep. Stefanik Blasts Biden Administration for Formula Shortage, Says FDA has Known About Threat Since February

By Breitbart. The Biden Administration has been aware of the threat of a national baby formula shortage for “months,” House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY) told Breitbart News – on the same day President Biden claimed only “mind readers” could have anticipated the crisis.

Asked Friday about whether his administration could have taken steps sooner to avoid the current supply crunch of baby formula, Biden replied, “If we’d been better mind-readers I guess we could have.” . . .

But Rep. Stefanik told Breitbart News in a wide-ranging interview on Friday that Biden has been “asleep at the switch,” and that the FDA has known about a pending baby formula shortage for over three months – at least since she reached out to warn them of it in February.

“They’ve known this has been an issue for months. I sounded the alarm and reached out to the FDA in February of this year, after the recall of the Sturgis, Michigan, [Abott Nutrition] manufacturing facility, and we got no substantive response from the FDA. There was absolutely no plan from this administration about how to address that supply chain issue, which has now created even more of a crisis,” Stefanik said. (Read more from “Rep. FDA, Biden ‘Dropped the Ball’ on Baby Formula Crisis, Experts Say

The FDA “dropped the ball’’ on the country’s baby-formula crisis — shutting down a crucial plant on top of product recalls and then not warning parents of the ramifications, experts told The Post on Friday.

Desperate moms and dads have been trawling stores across the country in search of baby formula ever since mega-manufacturer Abbott issued a safety recall in February for products made at its plant in Sturgis, Mich., over contamination concerns.

The Food and Drug Administration later closed the plant after federal inspectors found Abbott failed to maintain sanitary conditions and procedures there — sparking a cascade of crippling effects on the supply chain.

“Somebody, whether it be Abbott or the FDA, should have realized, ‘We’re stopping production at one of a handful of plants that produces baby formula and what are the repercussions,’ ’’ said William Marler, a lawyer specializing in food-safety cases, to The Post.

“That’s where the FDA and Abbott dropped the ball. … They could have recalled the product without shutting the facility. They do recalls all the time without shutting the facility down.” (Read more from “FDA, Biden ‘Dropped the Ball’ on Baby Formula Crisis, Experts Say” HERE)

Another Domestic Crisis Is Emerging and You Can See It in the Grocery Aisle

. . .[H]ow will you handle this next domestic crisis that will also impact working families on the home front? We’re seeing a baby formula shortage. There’s no strategic reserve you can abuse to save your skin on this one (via Fox Business):

Parents of infants across the U.S. are taking to social media pleading for media coverage and political action while posting pictures of empty store shelves, as the country’s baby formula shortage continues to get worse.

[…]

Fox News Digital spoke to a Michigan mom with young kids who said her last usual Amazon order for formula was delayed and ultimately canceled on Thursday, so she quickly went out and was frustrated to discover there was no formula to be found in at least four major stores in her area.

The New York mother of a newborn told FOX Business her infant lost a lot of weight following birth, so she and her husband had to supplement the baby’s diet with formula because she could not produce enough breast milk to keep up.

“When we ran to the local Target one day to get some [formula] just days after she was born, the shelves were completely empty,” the new mom said. “My heart literally sank.”
