Homeless Man Spears Bear to Death in Alaska, Officials Say

A homeless man fashioned a machete-like blade to a groomed tree branch and speared a hungry black bear cub that was sniffing for food Friday morning at an illegal camp site in Anchorage.

The cub, estimated to be about a year and a half old, and an older bear thought to be its mother had been at the camp site for days stealing food, authorities said.

On Friday morning, the cub was seen outside a tent. David Tandler, 49, told officers he was worried it would harm children inside the tent, Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said in an email to The Associated Press. No children were present at the camp site when troopers arrived. (Read more from “Homeless Man Spears Bear to Death in Alaska, Officials Say” HERE)

Bear with Head Stuck in Plastic Jar for 11 Days is Freed

Four central Pennsylvania residents said they used only a rope and a flashlight during a wild chase to rescue a young bear whose head had been stuck in a plastic jar for at least 11 days…

“I thought, `No one is going to believe us,”‘ said Morgan Laskowski, 22, the bartender at the Jamison City Hotel and a member of the impromptu bear-wrangling team.

Area residents first spotted the 100-pound bruin with its head in a red jar on June 3, but it eluded game wardens. The animal was attracted to the container because it appeared to have once contained cooking oil…

They cornered the bear in a resident’s backyard, where it ended up falling into a pool a couple of times. Eventually, they wrangled the animal into a position where [Jeff] Hubler could pull off the jar.

Bear Attacks Man, Man Fights Back (+video)

Photo Credit: FOX 11Gerre Ninnemann says he’s lucky to be alive. He had to fight off a black bear Monday afternoon at his cabin in Silver Cliff in Marinette County.

So how did it all start? Her name’s Maddy. “We came out this patio door,” said Ninnemann.

Ninnemann – a retired financial planner who splits his time between his home in Green Bay and cabin in Silver Cliff – was getting ready to go for a walk with his pal Maddy – his eight-year-old yellow lab.

“And the bear was right here,” said Ninnemann pointing to the side of the cabin. “(Maddy) let out a ferocious bark and growl and started chasing after it.”

But the young male black bear was soon chasing after Maddy. “I came running out into the yard here, shouting, waving my arms at the bear, thinking that would scare him away,” said Ninnemann, who has dealt with bears on his property for the past 20 or so years. “But it didn’t. All it did was leave the dog and come right for me.”

First fatal bear mauling in history of Denali National Park

A grizzly attacked and killed a lone backpacker in Denali National Park and Preserve on Friday after the man encountered the bear next to a river and lingered there snapping pictures, according to the National Park Service.

The death is the first fatal bear mauling in Alaska in seven years and the only one in the 6-million-acre park’s recorded history, going back more than 90 years, the Park Service said.

“It’s an extremely rare event, and it’s not common that we even have injuries related to bears,” said park spokeswoman Maureen McLaughlin. “We don’t see a lot, and we think some of that is due to our education.”

But the man — identified late Saturday as 49-year-old San Diego, Calif., resident Richard White — apparently ignored key parts of that education, which the Park Service says he received prior to heading into the Denali wilderness, in part of the park where there are no trails. Photos on White’s camera showed he stayed near the bear, instead of leaving the area, as required by his permit, park officials said.

Alaska Wildlife Troopers assisting park rangers shot a large male grizzly Saturday believed to have killed White and cached his body the day before, the Park Service said. The rangers had been unable to recover White’s remains for more than 24 hours, but retrieved him late Saturday, a park spokeswoman said.
