European Country Deploys Troops To Protect Jews Week After Synagogue Blast

Belgium deployed military personnel Monday to protect Jewish sites across the country, following a pre-dawn explosion at a synagogue in Liège, Belgium last week.

Officials announced that the Ministry of Defence, coordinating with the federal police, will oversee security at synagogues, Jewish schools, and other locations linked to the Jewish community, as reported by the Belga News Agency. The ministers cited Article 111 of the Integrated Police Act, which allows the commissioner general of the federal police to request military support for police operations.

Interior Minister Bernard Quintin and Defence Minister Theo Francken said the deployment would happen immediately with police leading operational management in close cooperation with the military.

“To protect our Jewish community, we are deploying military personnel to support security on our streets. The safety of every citizen must be guaranteed,” Francken wrote. “Antisemitism and hatred against Jews will never be tolerated. We will stand firm against it, always.”

The blast in Liège occurred around 4 a.m. on March 9, shattering windows on nearby buildings but causing no injuries, police reported. Prime Minister Bart De Wever called the act “an attack on our values and our society” and pledged to fight antisemitism across Belgium, according to Le Monde.

‘Quickly Turned Horrific’: Family Hears Woman Screaming as She’s Euthanized

The euthanasia program in Belgium has come under fire again, following news that a woman was suffocated with a pillow after the cocktail of drugs administered to her failed to end her life.

Le Soir, a European media outlet, reported that Alexina Wattiez, who was just 36 years old, sought euthanasia after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. In 2021, her doctor informed her that she would not survive for another year, and by March of 2022, her health was deteriorating.

Christophe Stulens, Wattiez’s partner, was there when she died, along with his 15-year-old daughter, Tracy. A doctor and two nurses came to the home that the three shared to carry out the euthanasia. “After a short night’s sleep, I was woken up by a nurse who told me that Alexina was doing very badly,” Stulens said. “Then the doctor took some syringes and we were asked if we wanted to say goodbye.”

Stulens and his daughter were told to wait outside, so they went onto the terrace, but what they thought would be a peaceful death quickly turned horrific: they heard screaming. . .

An autopsy was performed, and found that Wattiez died of asphyxiation. Allegedly, the nurses took turns using a pillow to suffocate her. “Alexina wanted to sleep peacefully, but apparently there were too few resources,” Stulens said. The Public Prosecution Service of Liège has now opened a murder investigation, while Stulens is suing. Outbreak of Monkeypox Linked to Massive Festival for the ‘Gay Fetish Community’

Three confirmed cases of monkeypox have been linked to a homosexual fetish festival in Belgium, health authorities said Friday.

The Darklands Festival in Antwerp has been linked to all three confirmed cases of the disease in Belgium following four days of partying that began on May 5, according to AFP. The festival’s organizers said on their website that the Belgian government had asked them to inform attendees that the outbreak was likely caused by a festival-goer bringing the sickness from abroad.

“There’s reason to assume that the virus has been brought in by visitors from abroad to the festival after recent cases in other countries,” the organizers said. (Read more from “Outbreak of Monkeypox Linked to Massive Festival for the ‘Gay Fetish Community’” HERE)

Terrorist Goes on Rampage Yelling ‘Allahu Akbar’

By The Washington Post. A man killed two police officers and a bystander Tuesday in the Belgian city of Liege before he was fatally shot in what prosecutors are investigating as a terrorist attack, a prosecutor said.

The attacker, who was not immediately named by Belgian authorities, had been in prison since 2003 and was allowed out Monday on a two-day leave, Belgian Justice Minister Koen Geens said. The furlough put Belgian officials on the defensive about whether they should have been able to predict that the man was a security risk.

The incident unfolded at midmorning in the center of Liege, the third-largest city in Belgium, when the man came up behind two female police officers and attacked them with a knife, then grabbed one of their handguns and shot both dead, prosecutor Philippe Dulieu said.

Then the attacker shot a 22-year-old man who was sitting in the passenger seat of a nearby parked car. The assailant next walked into a school, where he took a woman hostage and forced a standoff with police during which students were evacuated. The man was subsequently killed in a gun battle with police officers who rushed to the scene, Dulieu said. (Read more from “Gunman Goes on Rampage Yelling ‘Allahu Akbar'” HERE)

Belgium Terror Attack Leaves Two Cops Dead

By The New York Post. A prison inmate on an extremist watchlist was given a two-day furlough in Belgium — and promptly killed two female cops and a civilian while shouting “Allahu Akbar!’’ during the terror attack, police said Tuesday.

Drug con-turned-extremist Benjamin Herman, 36, walked out of prison near the eastern city of Liège on Monday night as part of the country’s rehabilitation program to help inmates assimilate back into society once they are released, authorities said. . .

The officers were identified as Soraya Belkacemi, 53, and Lucile Garcia, 45 — both the wives of fellow law-enforcement officers. (Read more from “Belgium Terror Attack Leaves Two Cops Dead” HERE)

Belgium Police Arrest 16, Paris Fugitive Still at Large

Belgian prosecutors announced early Monday that police had detained 16 people in 22 raids but that Paris fugitive Salah Abdeslam was not among them. Despite the raids, authorities maintained their highest terror alert in the capital for a third straight day.

The raids capped a tense day with hundreds of troops patrolling and authorities hunting for one or more suspected militants, the Belgian government chose Sunday to keep the capital on the highest state of alert into the start of the workweek to prevent a Paris-style attack.

Citing a “serious and imminent” threat, Prime Minister Charles Michel announced that schools and universities in Brussels will be closed Monday, with the subway remaining shut down, preventing a return to normal in the city that is also home to the European Union’s main institutions.
