Black Friday Disappoints: Thin Crowds and ‘Desolate’ Stores

The busiest shopping day of the year is not as busy as retailers hoped.

Across the U.S., shopping malls are seeing only thin crowds, according to reports in business media. Inflation and depressed consumer sentiment appear to have dampened the holiday shopping spirit.

Reuters reported:

At Times Square in New York City, which was cloudy with occasional light rain, employees were seen waiting inside stores for crowds that so far had not arrived.

Outside the American Dream mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey, there were no lines outside stores. A ToysRUS employee was seen walking around the mall handing out flyers with a list of the Black Friday door busters.

Thousands of Amazon Workers Strike on Black Friday

Thousands of Amazon workers are going on strike and walking out on Black Friday, protesting their working conditions and pay.

The “Make Amazon Pay” campaign planned strikes and walkouts encompassing thousands of employees in more than 30 different countries across six continents, the campaign’s website reported. The MAP website listed rising costs of living, Amazon’s supposed tax avoidance, and the company’s alleged ignoring of climate change as justification for the campaign, demanding that the company address these issues and pay workers more.

“For workers and consumers, the price of everything is going up. And for everyone, the global temperature is rising and our planet is under stress. But instead of supporting its workers, communities and the planet, Amazon is squeezing every last drop it can,” the campaign’s website writes. “We are workers and citizens divided by geography and our role in the global economy but united in our commitment to Make Amazon Pay fair wages, its taxes and for its impact on the planet.”

MAP is a 70-member coalition of trade unions and left-wing groups, including Progressive International, Greenpeace, Oxfam, Amazon Workers International, and Data for Black Lives. (Read more from “Thousands of Amazon Workers Strike on Black Friday” HERE)

WATCH: Woman Steals From a Small Child and Then Pretends to Be a Victim in Unreal Video

. . .In a video tweeted Saturday by @Imposter_Edits, a group of people surged into an unidentified story on what appears to be Black Friday.

That’s when all hell broke loose. In the video, an adult woman snatched a box from a small child and then began fighting with the woman with the kid. . .

That is without a doubt one of the craziest videos that I’ve seen. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything like it before. (Read more from “WATCH: Woman Steals From a Small Child and Then Pretends to Be a Victim in Unreal Video” HERE)

Retailers Struggle to Survive Through Black Friday in Coronavirus America

Black Friday appears to be calm but not catastrophically slow across much of the United States.

Most of the country’s biggest retailers were closed Thursday and abjured the late-night or midnight doorbuster openings of years past due to the risk of coronavirus infection. When they opened their doors on Friday morning, stores in some areas had small lines or few shoppers while in other areas shoppers faced sizeable lines, although none comparable to the prepandemic era.

The pandemic has created some wild and unpredictable swings in the economy, triggering shortages at times and igniting a home-buying boom. How holiday shopping will be affected is a big question mark at this point, making this arguably the most important Black Friday since the frightening days of the 2008 financial crisis.

Consumer spending has been surprisingly robust since the economy began to reopen and the labor market has staged a swifter than expected recovery. Many consumers are feeling flush, their wealth boosted by a stock market that has pushed the S&P 500 up 65 percent since the lockdown low in March and soaring home values. Money not spent on trips, sports games, movies, or eating out has apparently gone into the purchase of consumer goods and contributed to savings accounts of many households.

It’s unclear whether this will hold up on Black Friday as infections and hospitalizations hit new record highs across much of the country, lockdowns are being reimposed, and layoffs have begun climbing again. Retailers have much less inventory than is typical at this time of the year, a bet that demand will be softer. Black Friday Mayhem: Brawls, Shots Fired, Guards Beating Back Angry Hordes. Merry Christmas!

That quaking beneath your feet is not a stampede; it’s the march of hungry consumers barging through the local Best Buy in pursuit of that 50% off SmartTV for Black Friday.

Nothing quite says “Merry Christmas!” like beating the living daylights out of a total stranger for snagging the last “Sally Wets Her Pants” doll on the shelf. Gone are the days of gathering around the fireplace for some Nat King Cole and roasted chestnuts; in 2018, Black Friday is the ritual by which we welcome the “most wonderful season of all,” and this year started off with a bang … literally. . .

According to local reports, an altercation between two adults outside of a Footaction at the Riverchase Galleria in Alabama resulted in one death and two injuries after a 21-year-old male suspect pulled his gun and fired on an 18-year-old male shopper. . .

Another Riverchase Galleria in Hoover, Alabama, closed early last year when police were called in to break a brawl up between two women. Witnesses at the time reported of seeing a shoe thrown in the scuffle which planted into a baby’s face.

On social media, cell phone video footage at varying Walmarts showed fights and brawls breaking out between customers as well as employees forged with the impossible task of quelling the rabid masses. At one Walmart in an unspecified city, video showed customers wrestling over a stack of television sets. Another video at another Walmart showed two men fighting as their significant others cursed them out. This video shows security guards pushing customers back as they stampede through the store.

Huge Black Friday Brawl Inside Mall as ‘Shopper Throws Shoe Which Hits Baby’ and Women Wrestle on Floor

By Chris Kitching. Black Friday shoppers got into a huge brawl at a shopping mall as wild footage shows women wrestling on the floor and being handcuffed by police.

Women were seen punching and kicking each other, while one allegedly threw a shoe that hit a baby.

There were scenes of chaos as the women brawled and police and staff struggled to break them apart.

Stunned witnesses laughed and recorded video on their mobile phones as police ordered them to leave the store.

The mall in the US state of Alabama had to be shut down early after multiple fights were reported, while a shooting left one person critically injured at a mall in Missouri as Black Friday shoppers showed up looking for deals. One Shot Outside Missouri Mall, Brawls Close Alabama Shopping Center as Black Friday Begins

By Christopher Brennan. One person was shot outside a Missouri mall as swarms of shoppers looking for Black Friday deals saw chaos pop up throughout the country.

An unidentified 19-year-old received life-threatening injuries after being shot in the parking lot of a center in the college town of Columbia late Thursday night, according to KMIZ.

It was not immediately clear what caused the shooting at the mall, which was open until midnight on Thanksgiving as would-be savers began looking for deals before the unofficial commercial holiday began.

Another shopping center in Alabama saw an outbreak of violence Thursday, with brawls shutting down a late-night session early. (Read more from “One Shot Outside Missouri Mall, Brawls Close Alabama Shopping Center as Black Friday Begins” HERE)

Black (Eye) Friday: Which States Are the Most Chaotic for Black Friday Shoppers?

Looking to avoid a slap-fight during your Black Friday shopping trip? Depending on what state you’re in, that might be easier said than done.

As hordes of American shoppers bundle up and hunker down in front of their local retailers on Nov. 24 (or even Nov. 23), some of them will need to be more ready for combat than others, a new study suggests . . .

Adjusting the data to account for each state’s population size, Declutter predicts that shoppers in Wyoming, Illinois, Arizona, Mississippi and Kansas are the most likely to run into trouble during their Black Friday browsing, while shopping in Montana, Connecticut, New Jersey, Masschusetts and Oregon will supposedly be more mellow.
