Senator Bob Menendez Faces New Charges of Foreign Bribery

Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) finds himself mired in yet another legal battle as a federal grand jury files a second superseding indictment, adding new layers to the existing allegations of bribery and acting as a foreign agent. The New Jersey Democrat, who pleaded not guilty to previous charges last September, now faces additional accusations related to his purported involvement in promoting positive statements about Qatar to secure a multimillion-dollar investment for a New Jersey developer.

The latest indictment sheds light on Menendez’s alleged efforts to facilitate a significant investment from a Qatari company into a project involving New Jersey developer Fred Daibes. According to NBC News, Menendez is accused of making favorable statements about Qatar during discussions in late 2021 and early 2022, aimed at influencing a Qatari investor and a government official associated with the Qatari Investment Company.

The indictment suggests that Menendez provided Daibes with statements intended for the Qatari investor and government official, emphasizing his role in the alleged scheme. Prosecutors claim that text messages exchanged between Menendez and Daibes further implicate the senator in the dealings. In one instance, Daibes reportedly sent Menendez photos of luxury watches and asked if he was interested, indicating a potential link between the gifts and the investment discussions.

Federal prosecutors also revealed web searches conducted by Menendez after his return from a trip to Qatar in October 2021, where he allegedly searched for “how much is one kilo of gold worth.” The search, according to prosecutors, suggests Menendez’s potential involvement in gold-related transactions.

The indictment implicates Menendez in introducing Daibes to an unnamed Qatari investor, identified as a member of the Qatari royal family. Following a May 2022 meeting involving Menendez, Daibes, and the Qatari investor, a deal was struck for the Qatari company to invest in Daibes’ project. As part of the transaction, Daibes allegedly gifted Menendez “at least one gold bar.”

These new revelations add another layer of complexity to the legal challenges faced by Senator Menendez, whose colleagues have previously distanced themselves due to his involvement in federal corruption probes.

Gold Bars and Allegations: Federal Investigators Uncover Links Between Menendez and Accused Bribery

A startling revelation has emerged in the ongoing legal saga surrounding Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), as federal investigators have uncovered a direct connection between at least four gold bars recovered during a search of Menendez’s home and one of the individuals accused of bribing the senator.

The intricate web of allegations began in 2013 when businessman Fred Daibes reported an armed robbery, claiming that assailants had stolen $500,000 in cash and nearly two dozen gold bars from him. The police later apprehended the suspects, and Daibes’ property, including the gold bars, was returned to him. Crucially, Daibes attested that each gold bar had a unique serial number, a feature that would prevent duplication.

However, a recent twist in the Menendez case indicates that four of the gold bars recovered from Menendez’s residence share the same serial numbers as four of the 22 gold bars stolen from Daibes and subsequently returned. Daibes himself faces charges in the federal indictment, accused of conspiring to bribe Menendez and engaging in fraud.

The indictment outlines a corrupt relationship between Menendez, his wife, and New Jersey businessmen Wael Hana, Jose Uribe, and Fred Daibes. Allegedly, these businessmen provided the senator with bribes totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars, with the intention of securing protection and advancing interests related to Egypt.

Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) has called for Menendez’s expulsion from the Senate, drawing parallels to the recent expulsion of now-former Rep. George Santos (R-NY) by the U.S. House of Representatives. Fetterman argued that Menendez’s alleged actions are more serious and warrant his removal from the Senate, emphasizing the need to make a decisive decision despite Menendez’s right to a day in court.

As the legal proceedings unfold, Menendez finds himself entangled in a high-stakes controversy, with the gold bars serving as a tangible link between the accused bribers and the senator, potentially influencing the trajectory of the case and Menendez’s political future.

WATCH: Sen. Bob Menendez Speaks Out On Bribery Scandal

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) claimed Monday morning he has withdrawn “thousands of dollars in cash” over the past three decades after federal prosecutors indicted him on bribery allegations following the purported discovery of $480,000 in cash and more than $100,000 in gold bars during a search of his home last summer.

Menendez’s claim came during a press conference that New Jersey.com noted was at the Hudson Community College Union City, New Jersey, campus. Notably, the community college is situated in New Jersey’s Eighth Congressional District, which his son, Rep. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), represents.

“For 30 years, I have withdrawn thousands of dollars in cash from my personal savings account, which I have kept for emergencies and because of the history of my family facing confiscation in Cuba,” Menendez, who has called the allegations “baseless,” claimed in his first public appearance since the indictment.

“Now, this may seem old-fashioned, but these were monies drawn from my personal savings account, based on the income that I have lawfully derived over those 30 years,” he added:

Bob Menendez Hires Hunter Biden’s Lawyer for Federal Corruption Case

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) has hired the lawyer representing President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, after Menendez was indicted last week on federal corruption charges.

CNBC reported that Menendez hired Abbe Lowell to represent him in the case — the same lawyer that he hired in 2015 to represent him in a similar corruption case, although legal experts have said that the evidence in the current case is much stronger.

Lowell was hired by Hunter Biden after his plea deal fell apart in federal court last month which eventually led to prosecutors charging Hunter Biden on firearm-related charges.

The federal indictment was unsealed against Menendez on Friday, and it accused the senator and his wife of accepting bribes from three business people in exchange for actions that he took as chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee. According to the DOJ, the bribes were intended to protect the businessmen and to benefit Egypt. (Read more from “Bob Menendez Hires Hunter Biden’s Lawyer for Federal Corruption Case” HERE)

Jersey Trash: Sleazy Bob Menendez Wins Re-Election

Well, it looks like Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez is projected to win re-election. The Jersey trash Democrat was engulfed in a major ethics scandal, in which he was accused of taking lavish gifts from Dr. Salomon Melgen in exchange for political favors. Melgen was recently convicted and sentenced to 17 years in prison for health care fraud. The months-long trial dented Menendez’s approval numbers, but it ended with a hung jury—and the Department of Justice declined to retry him.

Republican Bob Hugin was said to have run an excellent campaign against Menendez, hitting him with endless attack ads. With no real competitive House races in the Garden State to help turn out key areas of Democratic support—party insiders were worried that their base wouldn’t turn out. These fears were complicated by the fact that Menendez’s approval ratings are in the toilet, with Democrats depressed over the ethics fiasco.

Could Democratic Senator Bob Menendez Be Going to Jail?

Democratic Senator Bob Menendez might be going to jail.

In the latest update on the federal corruption trial of Sen. Menendez, D-N.J., an alternate juror has replaced a juror who was excused because of her vacation plans. The jury will resume its deliberations Monday. Judge William Wells told the jury, “You are starting fresh.”

But the juror who was excused, juror number 8, Evelyn Arroyo-Maultsby, has signaled that the jury may be ready to convict Menendez of committing a felony by making false statements regarding his Senate financial disclosure form.

“Then when I got home and I started thinking about it, and then I started praying on it. I felt God talking to me, saying ‘Evelyn, if you have doubts, remember the word reasonable doubt,’” Arroyo-Maultsby said.

In count 18, Menendez is charged with violating Title 18, United States Code, Sections 1001(a)(1) and (c)(1), which carries a maximum of five years’ prison time. (For more from the author of “Could Democratic Senator Bob Menendez Be Going to Jail?” please click HERE)

Menendez Tried to End His Corruption Trial. His Judge Wasn’t Buying It.

The federal judge overseeing New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez’s criminal trial declined to dismiss the charges against him Monday, after defense lawyers argued that the prosecution had failed to make its case.

U.S. District Judge William Walls rejected Menendez’s claim that the prosecution’s arguments were too broad to meet the narrow definition of corruption in federal law.

The U.S. Supreme Court established in a 2016 case that public officials only violate anti-corruption laws when they accept gifts, payments, or benefits in exchange for a specific and official act. Menendez’s lawyers argued that the government failed to show that the senator took specific and official actions as the result of a donor’s gifts. Prosecutors have put forward a “stream of benefits” theory of their case, in which they say Menendez performed favors for a donor over a period of years in exchange for lavish benefits like vacations and charter flights. Though the senator’s acts and the donor’s gifts may not chronologically coincide, prosecutors say their relationship was still corrupt. (Read more from “Menendez Tried to End His Corruption Trial. Embattled Sen. Menendez Still Welcome At Obama White House

Photo Credit: Mark WilsonWhile Democratic leaders have softened the tone of their allegiance to embattled New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez, the White House remains publicly unconcerned about working closely with the powerful Democrat.

Menendez is one of four senators meeting with President Barack Obama Wednesday afternoon at the White House to discuss immigration reform, according to Fox News’ Chad Pergram.

A White House official announced the meeting in a statement to reporters.

“Later this afternoon, the [p]resident will meet with Senate Democrats leading the effort to pass bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform. The meeting is part of the ongoing effort to continue to make progress towards bipartisan reform, which the [a]dministration believes should happen as quickly as possible,” the official wrote.

New York Times Calls For Menendez To Relinquish Committee Chairmanship

Photo Credit: Glyn Lowe PhotoworksThe New York Times editorial board called on Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) Saturday to step aside as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee until questions about his relationship with a friend and donor under FBI investigation are resolved. The editorial is the latest blow in the broadening flap over Menendez’s relationship with Salmon Melgen, a Florida eye surgeon accused of overbilling the government millions for medical treatments.

“It is unclear whether the Senate Ethics Committee has initiated a formal inquiry into Mr. Menendez’s conduct, but a prompt and thorough review is surely called for,” the editorial read. “In the meantime, Mr. Menendez needs to relinquish his leadership role, at least temporarily.”

Menendez, who assumed the chairmanship after Secretary of State John Kerry was confirmed late last month, first came under fire over a pair of flights on Melgen’s private jet he accepted in 2010 for vacations to the Dominican Republic. The New Jersey senator sent Melgen a personal check for $58,500 in January, acknowledging he had not properly reported the flights as gifts.

Since then, reports have questioned Menendez’s efforts to help Melgen revive a port security contract for a firm that he partially owned and phone calls the senator placed to federal health officials over the accusations of overbilling Medicare.

Earlier this month, federal agents raided Melgen’s Florida home and office, although the government has not indicated the focus of their investigation.

Reid Fends Off Questions About Menendez Allegations

Photo Credit: Center for American Progress Action FundSenate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) fended off questions about Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) at a press conference about immigration reform.

The first question out of the gate was from CNN correspondent Jim Acosta, who asked Reid when he learned that Menendez had reimbursed a political donor nearly $60,000 for two trips he took on the donor’s private plane.

Reid defended Menendez as a “friend” and “outstanding senator” but declined to discuss any details he may have had with the New Jersey lawmaker about media reports of allegations that he had sex with prostitutes in the Dominican Republic.

“First of all, Bob Menendez is my friend. He’s an outstanding senator. Any questions in this regard, direct to him. I don’t know anything about it,” Reid said.

The purpose of the press event was for Democratic leaders to reiterate their call for comprehensive immigration reform, and Reid wanted to discuss his plan for moving the bill through the Judiciary Committee and then to the floor.
