Toddler Fights for Life After Hospital Removes Life Support Against Parents’ Wishes

By The Daily Wire. An ill two-year-old boy who had his oxygen removed by a U.K. children’s hospital — a directive backed by the courts and made against his parents’ wishes — is currently fighting for his life.

Officials directed that little Alfie Evans, who is believed to have encephalomyopathic mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, have his life support removed after the boy’s parents lost a legal battle in the British Supreme Court just days ago.

Alder Hey Children’s Hospital claims it’s not in the boy’s “best interests” to stay on a ventilator and maintains that further treatment is “futile.” The boy’s parents, alternatively, wish to continue to fight for their baby’s life.

According to Facebook postings from the boy’s desperate father, Tom Evans, Alfie had his ventilator removed at 9:17 p.m. on Monday and is still alive and continuing to fight for his life. Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, he says, is refusing to oxygenate the boy.

“He’s been sustaining his own life since 17 minutes past nine. We just need him oxygenated and they are denying us to do that. So, if anyone has any ideas or if anyone can help, feel free,” says Mr. Evans, adding, “Alfie is still here fighting.” (Read more from “Toddler Fights for Life After Hospital Removes Life Support Against Parents’ Wishes” HERE)

Alfie Evans Granted Italian Citizenship in Life Support Legal Row

By BBC News. Terminally ill toddler Alfie Evans has been granted Italian citizenship, the Italian foreign office has said . . .

Posting on Facebook, Mr Evans said: “Alfie has been granted Italian citizenship. We await for the [Italian] foreign minister to call Boris Johnson.”

He then said outside the Liverpool hospital: “I’m stood here now and Alfie is still here. Why? Because I’m still fighting for him, I’m still fighting and so is Alfie.”

Mr Evans said he had been in touch with the ambassador of Italy and his son had been given Italian citizenship, which he claimed would block any planned withdrawal of life support.

The Christian Legal Centre, which represents Alfie’s parents, said: “The Italian ambassador has urgently contacted the court with a request for the Italian government to be allowed to intervene in the case and seek the return of their citizen Alfie Evans to Italy.” (Read more from “Alfie Evans Granted Italian Citizenship in Life Support Legal Row” HERE)

Boy Dies While Replicating Science Experiment He Saw on YouTube

boy-110762_960_720Fifteen-year-old Morgan Wojciechowski is described as a “whiz kid” by his peers at Vermilion High School. But it may be his intellectual curiosity that ultimately caused his untimely death.

According to news station WKYC, Morgan was attempting to recreate something called “Jacob’s Ladder,” which is basically a high-voltage arc between two metal rods. He’d seen the experiment done successfully on YouTube, but when he tried it, the teen wound up electrocuting himself in his family’s garage.

“This was not a school assignment. This was simply something he saw on the Internet and wanted to experiment with,” Detective Robert Rieger told WKYC.

The boy’s school released this statement in the wake of his sudden death:

“We would like the greater community to know that we are brokenhearted about this tragic loss to our school community. Morgan was a vibrant student and athlete who was well liked at Vermillion High School.”

10-Year-Old Boy Robbed at Gunpoint for Only $3

Tommy Mendez went out with $3 to buy cookies at the corner store — but even in leafy Carroll Gardens, that proved to be perilous.

The 10-year-old was held up at gunpoint on one of Brooklyn’s safest streets by three men who forced him to hand over the three singles — and threatened to kill him if he snitched.

“I got really scared,” Tommy told The Post. “I didn’t want to tell my parents because I thought they would get mad at me for going out without permission. It was a big mistake.”

The crime took place at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 8 near the boy’s home and across the street from PS 149, also called The Brooklyn New School. (Read more from “10-Year-Old Boy Robbed at Gunpoint for Only $3” HERE)

Parents Allow 5-Year-Old Daughter to Make End-Of-Life Choice

Julianna Snow is dying of an incurable disease. She’s stable at the moment, but any germ that comes her way, even just the common cold virus, could kill her. She’s told her parents that the next time this happens, she wants to die at home instead of going to the hospital for treatment.

If Julianna were an adult, there would be no debate about her case: She would get to decide when to say “enough” to medical care and be allowed to die.

But Julianna is 5 years old. Should her parents have let her know how grave her situation is? Should they have asked her about her end-of-life wishes? And now that those wishes are known, should her parents heed them?

When she was 9 months old, Julianna’s parents noticed she couldn’t sit up steadily, something most babies can do around 6 months. At her first birthday, when children typically start to walk, Julianna couldn’t even pull herself up into a standing position . . .

This worried Michelle Moon, as a mother and as a neurologist. “The worst thing in the world for a neurologist is to not hit your milestones,” she says. “But I tried really hard not to overreact and freak out.” (Read more from “Parents Allow 5-Year-Old Daughter to Make End-Of-Life Choice” HERE)

But little Ella Peggie, who was born without her left arm, will get an extraordinary opportunity to share a life-changing bond with her new beloved pet – a three-legged puppy.

When her mother, Brooke Hodgson, saw the one-year-old Staffy Boston Terrier Cross named Snowy, she knew instantly the hound pound would be the perfect companion for her one-year-old daughter.

The 21-year-old mother decided to pen a heartwarming email to the Animal Welfare League of Queensland (AWLQ) asking if they could hold the abandoned dog at the Gold Coast rehoming centre.

‘My heart skipped a beat when I saw Snowy online,’ Ms Hodgson told Daily Mail Australia from her hometown of Loganholm in Queensland. (Read more from “The Heartwarming Bond Between a Beautiful Little Girl Born With Only One Arm and Her Three-Legged Puppy” HERE)

Why Everyone is Wearing Yellow Today for This Little Boy [+video]

SethWhat started as a way to put a smile on a 5-year-old’s face has become an international phenomenon beyond his mom’s wildest dreams.

Seth, who was born without an immune system, has a big smile, an even bigger personality and a simple message: Wear yellow [today] on March 27 to show him support.

Seth’s disorder, called severe combined immunodeficiency, is also known as the “bubble baby” disease because children like Seth must live in extremely clean environments.

Leanne (occasionally joined by Seth’s dad, Nik) has been keeping supporters updated on Seth’s condition through her blog. He is due for another bone marrow transplant in about five weeks, she said, when he’s well enough. His first transplant in 2010 was unsuccessful.

She’s thankful for the supportive responses her blog has gotten, she said. (Read more from “Why Everyone is Wearing Yellow Today for This Little Boy [+video]” HERE)

Then a few days later, the mother again recognized the smell of bleach coming from something she was going to drink and she confronted the pre-teen, the sheriff’s office said. The girl allegedly told her she wanted to kill her because she took away her iPhone, according to the sheriff’s office.

The girl had allegedly poured bleach into her mother’s water carafe, the sheriff’s office said. (Read more from “12-Year-Old Girl Accused of Trying to Poison Mother for This Bizzare Reason” HERE)

Are Smartphones Making Our Children Mentally Ill?

By Peter Stanford. Julie Lynn Evans has been a child psychotherapist for 25 years, working in hospitals, schools and with families, and she says she has never been so busy.

“In the 1990s, I would have had one or two attempted suicides a year – mainly teenaged girls taking overdoses, the things that don’t get reported. Now, I could have as many as four a month.”

And it’s not, she notes, simply a question of her reputation as both a practitioner and a writer drawing so many people to the door of her cosy consulting rooms in west London where we meet. “If I try to refer people on, everyone else is choc-a-bloc too. We are all saying the same thing. There has been an explosion in numbers in mental health problems amongst youngsters” . . .

“Something is clearly happening,” she says, “because I am seeing the evidence in the numbers of depressive, anorexic, cutting children who come to see me. And it always has something to do with the computer, the Internet and the smartphone.” (Read more from this story HERE)
