China Warns Elon Musk After COVID Lab Leak Comments

China is warning Twitter CEO Elon Musk against sharing posts that promote the lab leak theory of the coronavirus, suggesting that such commentary could hurt Tesla’s relationship with the company’s second-largest market.

The cryptic warning came on a social media post by the state-run Global Times newspaper. The writer was reacting to Musk commenting on a tweet that mentioned the Department of Energy’s conclusion that COVID-19 originated at a lab in Wuhan, China.

The original tweet, from the account “Kanekoa The Great,” questioned whether Dr. Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was involved in the development of COVID-19 because he had funded “gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab.”

“He did it via a pass-through organization (EcoHealth),” Musk responded, referring to the nonprofit group that was awarded nearly $8 million in federal research grants to study bat coronaviruses in China. (Read more from “China Warns Elon Musk After COVID Lab Leak Comments” HERE)

Army Chief: If ‘Major War’ Breaks Out, China Will Attack U.S. Homeland

The secretary of the Army is warning there could be – even would be – an attack on the U.S. homeland by the Chinese military if a “major war” breaks out.

“It we got into a major war with China, the United States homeland would be at risk as well with both kinetic attacks and non-kinetic attacks – whether it’s cyberattacks on the power grid or on pipelines,” said Christine Wormuth, army secretary, during an event at the American Enterprise Institute.

“They are going to go after the will of the United States public. They’re going to try to erode support for a conflict,” she said, according to the Washington Examiner.

She explained the China’s People’s Liberation Army forces “are not yet prepared to launch an invasion of Taiwan, according to U.S. intelligence and military officials,” the report said. . .

“The payload of exercises in pathways is really at its zenith here in ’23,” Lt. Gen. Charles Flynn, commander of U.S. Army Pacific, said in the report. He was referring to an array of U.S. military exercises in the Indo-Pacific. (Read more from “Army Chief: If ‘Major War’ Breaks Out, China Will Attack U.S. Homeland” HERE)

China Slams COVID Lab-Leak Theory, Accuses FBI of ‘Politicizing’ Issue

China on Wednesday strongly pushed back against the FBI’s claim that the COVID-19 pandemic may have originated from a virus that leaked from a Chinese laboratory and urged the US to “respect science and facts.”

“By rehashing the lab-leak theory, the US will not succeed in discrediting China, and instead, it will only hurt its own credibility,” said China Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning in responding to remarks made by FBI Director Christopher Wray this week.

Mao further argued that the involvement of the bureau in this matter was evidence enough of “politicization of origin tracing.”

“We urge the US to respect science and facts … stop turning origin tracing into something about politics and intelligence, and stop disrupting social solidarity and origins cooperation,” she added.

In an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier on Tuesday, Wray said: “The FBI has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident in (central China’s) Wuhan.” (Read more from “China Slams COVID Lab-Leak Theory, Accuses FBI of ‘Politicizing’ Issue” HERE)

China Will Target the US Homeland in War Over Taiwan, Army Leader Predicts

China will attack the American homeland if “a major war” erupts over Taiwan or elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific, the U.S. Army’s top civilian expects.

“If we got into a major war with China, the United States homeland would be at risk as well with both kinetic attacks and non-kinetic attacks — whether it’s cyberattacks on the power grid or on pipelines,” Army Secretary Christine Wormuth said Monday at the American Enterprise Institute. “They are going to go after the will of the United States public. They’re going to try to erode support for a conflict.”

Flynn and Wormuth touted the importance of the U.S. Army in the competition with China, an argument advanced at least in part to urge lawmakers not to forget about the Army in the upcoming spending process. Fiscal fights of the last decade often have forced the federal government to operate a funding mechanism known as a “continuing resolution,” which authorizes federal officials to spend money according to the plans set by previous budgets — a process that, according to Wormuth, has constrained the military’s ability to prepare for the risk of a clash with China. Biden’s National Security Adviser Issues Warning to China on Russia

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan underscored that there is no evidence that China has been providing military assistance to Russia in its war with Ukraine.

Responding to CIA Director William Burns’s public assertion that he was confident in the intelligence that China was mulling the prospects of giving lethal aid to Russia, Sullivan stressed that doing so would be a “mistake” and that the United States will monitor the situation “carefully.”

“We actually haven’t seen them take a final decision to provide the aid to Russia, and we haven’t seen the aid be provided to Russia. So we will watch carefully, we will be vigilant, and we will continue to send a strong message that we believe that sending military aid to Russia,” Sullivan told CNN’s State of the Union with Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.

Sullivan said that deciding to provide military aid to Russia “would be a bad mistake, and China should want no part of it.”

China has publicly denied reports that it is weighing lethal aid, despite Burns’ statement. When pressed about how the U.S. would respond, Sullivan demurred, opting to keep the U.S. communication with Beijing private, though he stressed that the consequences have been communicated with China. GOP Senator Suggests Biden Is ‘Compromised’ by China Because He ‘Won’t Stand Up to Dictators’

GOP Florida Sen. Rick Scott on Sunday accused President Biden of repeatedly “pacifying” China and suggested the commander in chief may be “compromised” somehow by the Communist country.

Scott told John Catsimatidis on his WABC 770 AM radio show that no American company should be doing business in China or Russia, saying the US must “focus on what’s good for America, what’s good for Americans, what’s good for our children, our grandchildren.

“All that Biden does is pacify China. I mean, I don’t know why he does it. I don’t know if he’s compromised. I don’t know what it is. But this is a guy that won’t stand up to dictators around the world,” Scott said.

The president has had to deflect questions for months about his role in first son Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine and China, which were first reported by The Post in October and November 2020.

Scott reiterated comments he made on Twitter last week in response to a poll that showed Americans are now more concerned with China’s influence around the world than Russia’s, and that 58% disapprove of how Biden is handling relations with Beijing. Chinese Military Warns U.S. Navy Plane to Stay Away or ‘Pay Full Responsibility’

The Chinese military had a warning for the U.S. after an encounter escalated tensions between the two countries.

A U.S. Navy P-8 plane was recently flying 30 miles outside the South China Sea when it received a radio call from China to move away from its airspace.

“No approaching anymore, or you will pay full responsibility,” an operative of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) said over the radio.

Lt. Nikki Slaughter, who was piloting the U.S. Navy P-8 aircraft at the time, quickly responded just as a Chinese jet armed with air-to-air missiles came up alongside them.

“PLA fighter aircraft, this is U.S. Navy P-8A. I have you off my left wing, and I intend to proceed to the west. I request that you do the same, over,” Slaughter said. (Read more from “Chinese Military Warns U.S. Navy Plane to Stay Away or ‘Pay Full Responsibility'” HERE)

Zelensky Warns of World War III if China Allies With Russia; As Biden Visits Ukraine, China’s Top Diplomat Goes to Russia

By Daily Wire. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned Monday that World War III is inevitable if China allies with Russia.

Zelensky’s comments came the same day President Joe Biden made a surprise visit to Kyiv and two days after U.S. intelligence officials revealed that they believe China is considering sending lethal aid to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces.

“For us, it is important that China does not support the Russian Federation in this war,” the Ukrainian president told German daily Die Welt, according to Reuters. “In fact, I would like it to be on our side. At the moment, however, I don’t think it’s possible.”

“But I do see an opportunity for China to make a pragmatic assessment of what is happening here,” Zelensky added. “Because if China allies itself with Russia, there will be a world war, and I do think that China is aware of that.”

Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned China on Saturday that there would be consequences if the communist country sent lethal aid to support Russia in the war nearing its one-year mark. Blinken has reportedly been concerned about China cozying up to Putin and taking on a larger role in the war. (Read more from “Zelensky Warns of World War III if China Allies With Russia” HERE)

As Biden Visits Ukraine, China’s Top Diplomat Goes to Russia

By CNN. As US President Joe Biden touched down in Ukraine to meet with his counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday, China’s top diplomat was traveling in the opposite direction, on his way to Russia.

Wang Yi – who was promoted as Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s top foreign policy adviser last month – is due to arrive in Moscow this week as part of his eight-day Europe tour, a trip that brings into focus China’s attempted diplomatic balancing act since Russia tanks rolled into Ukraine a year ago.

The optics of the two trips – taking place just days before the one-year anniversary of the brutal war on Friday – underscores the sharpening of geopolitical fault lines between the world’s two superpowers. (Read more from “As Biden Visits Ukraine, China’s Top Diplomat Goes to Russia” HERE)

China Threatens Sanctions Against U.S. For Balloon Bursting

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Wednesday threatened to impose “countermeasures” against the United States for shooting down the Chinese spy balloon that flew across the continental U.S. in early February.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin grew a bit flustered in his Wednesday press conference when asked to produce evidence of China’s claims about the balloon, such as that it carried only meteorological equipment and was unexpectedly blown into U.S. airspace in an “unintended, unexpected, and isolated event.”

Wang also grew uncomfortable when reporters asked him to produce some evidence for China’s repeated claims that American spy balloons are constantly flying over Chinese territory. The latest version of these claims is that America has spy balloons parked over the Chinese-oppressed regions of Tibet and East Turkistan, called the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region by the Chinese government.

“China has handled the illegal flight of U.S. balloons through our airspace in a calm and professional manner. By contrast, the U.S. overreacted to the unintended entry of a Chinese civilian airship into its airspace caused by force majeure,” Wang sputtered. Biden’s Top China Adviser Out at White House After Balloon Debacle: Report

Laura Rosenberger, President Joe Biden’s top adviser on matters related to China and Taiwan, will step down in March, Bloomberg reported Wednesday, citing White House officials.

Rosenberger serves as a special assistant to the president and senior director on the National Security Council and has guided the president amid Washington’s increasing tensions with Beijing and will see out her term as the administration grapples with fallout from the shooting down of a Chinese spy balloon in America’s coastal waters on Feb. 4. However, Rosenberger’s plans to step down preceded the balloon invading U.S. airspace and sparking bipartisan concern in Congress of the security implications of the spy balloon incursion, officials told Bloomberg.

“Under President Biden, we are more prepared to outcompete China and advance a free and open Indo-Pacific than ever before,” National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told Bloomberg. “Since the first day of the administration, Laura’s skilled diplomacy and tenacity have been essential to this administration priority, and we are immensely grateful for her service.”

Rosenberger worked to fortify the U.S.’ unofficial ties with the independently-ruled island of Taiwan, White House officials told Bloomberg.
