Would Democrats Embrace JFK Today?

As Democrats begin maneuvering for the 2016 presidential race, there isn’t one who would think of disparaging John F. Kennedy’s stature as a Democratic Party hero. Yet it’s a pretty safe bet that none would dream of running on Kennedy’s approach to government or embrace his political beliefs.

Today’s Democratic Party — the home of Barack Obama, John Kerry, and Al Gore — wouldn’t give the time of day to a candidate like JFK.

The 35th president was an ardent tax-cutter who championed across-the-board, top-to-bottom reductions in personal and corporate tax rates, slashed tariffs to promote free trade, and even spoke out against the “confiscatory” property taxes being levied in too many cities.

He was anything but a big-spending, welfare-state liberal. “I do not believe that Washington should do for the people what they can do for themselves through local and private effort,” Kennedy bluntly asserted during the 1960 campaign. It was a message he memorably restated in his inaugural address: “And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country.” One of his first acts as president was to institute a pay cut for top White House staffers, and that was only the start of his budgetary austerity. “To the surprise of many of his appointees,” longtime aide Ted Sorensen would later write, he “personally scrutinized every agency request with a cold eye and encouraged his budget director to say ‘no.'”…

Since that terrible day in Dallas 50 years ago, popular mythology has turned Kennedy into a liberal hero. Some of that mythmaking, as journalist and historian Ira Stoll argues in a new book, JFK, Conservative, was driven by Kennedy aides, such as Sorensen and Arthur Schlesinger Jr., who had always wanted their boss to be more left-leaning than he was. Some of it was fueled by the Democratic Party’s emotional connection to the memory of a martyred president, and its understandable desire to link their priorities to his legacy.

Illinois GOP Central Committee Picks “Combine” Lobbyists as Chair

In Illinois, there’s only one political party. It’s The Combine – the collaborative combination of Democrat and Republican politicians and party officials who work together to harvest the taxpayers’ money.

The Tea Party organizations in Illinois are up against The Combine. Understanding what that means requires understanding what The Combine is, and how it operates.

The “Combine”

About fifteen years ago, a descriptive label was coined to apply to the Illinois political environment by Chicago Tribune writer, John Kass. He called it “The Combine.”

Former Illinois U.S. Senator (1999-2005) Peter Fitzgerald was the last Senator or Governor to challenge The Combine. It cost him his political career.

In a 2008 Tribune article entitled “InCombine, cash is king, corruption is bipartisan,” Kass recounted an exchange with Fitzgerald three years after Fitzgerald declined to run for a second Senate term.

“[I] called former U.S. Sen. Peter Fitzgerald, the Republican maverick from Illinois who tried to fight political corruption and paid for it. For this sin, he was driven out of Illinois politics by political bosses, by their spinners and media mouthpieces, who ridiculed him mercilessly. ‘Senator, what do you call that connection that Stuart Levine [a Republican fund-raiser found guilty of participating in Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich’s kick-back scheme] describes from the witness stand, you know that arrangement across party lines, with politically powerful men leveraging government to make money — what do you call it?’”

Here was Fitzgerald’s respond: “‘What do you call that Illinois political class that’s not committed to any party, they simply want to make money off the taxpayers?’ Fitzgerald said. ‘You know what to call them. The Illinois Combine,’ Fitzgerald said. ‘The bipartisan Illinois political combine. And all these guys being mentioned [in the Blagojevich case], they’re part of it. In the final analysis, The Combine’s allegiance is not to a party, but to their pocketbooks. They’re about making money off the taxpayers,’ Fitzgerald said.”

Kass closed his article writing, “He [Fitzgerald] should know. He fought The Combine and lost, and the empty suits running the Republican Party encourage their friendly scribes to blame the social conservatives for the disaster of the state GOP.”

That was written in 2008. Nothing has changed since.

Fitzgerald lost out to the Illinois Combine Republicans – who included Illinois Congressman and Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, but that’s another story. For now, here are two examples of what Illinois Combine Republicans look like.

Republican Combine Guy #1: U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood

Nothing has changed since February 2010 when I wrote the following for Andrew Breitbart’s Big Journalism.

“Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood represents the Illinois Combine in Obama’s Cabinet. His history in Illinois politics is that of a Republican chameleon.”

{Snip}

“The MSM loves LaHood because he’s a Bob Michel Republican. LaHood was an aide to Michel, former House Republican Minority Leader, and was elected to his seat after Michel retired. Bob went along to get along. Ray followed suit.”

“LaHood has long been an Illinois Combine Republican… [F]itzgerald beat Democrat incumbent Senator Carol Moseley Braun. Braun and Obama both worked at Allison Davis’s Chicago law firm that provided services to slum landlords, like Tony Rezko. Fitzgerald bucked the Combine on a couple of big-ticket federally-funded Illinois projects, one involving a $13 billion expansion of O’Hare Airport.”

{Snip}

“As far back as 2002, LaHood was working to oust his fellow Republican from the U.S. Senate. In late 2002, Rep. LaHood told the Chicago Sun-Times: ‘I’m thinking about trying to make sure Peter has an opponent in the 2004 Republican primary. I think we can do better than him.’ Soon thereafter, Illinois Republican leaders made it clear Fitzgerald would have trouble raising money for reelection and would have to spend several million from his personal fortune. Sen. Fitzgerald decided to retire and return to banking.”

“In 2004, State Senator Barack Obama was running against Republican Jack Ryan for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Fitzgerald when Ryan’s campaign mysteriously blew up. A California court opened his previously sealed divorce records wherein Ryan’s ex-wife, Jeri, alleged strange sexual tastes on Ryan’s part.”

“CNN reported LaHood’s reaction to Ryan’s situation: ‘…the Illinois congressional delegation had been largely silent about Ryan, leaving him to fend for himself. One Republican, Rep. Ray LaHood, had even called for Ryan to withdraw from the race.’”

“As the Ryan controversy built, the Chicago Tribune reported: The political impact of the revelations on Jack Ryan’s candidacy will play out over the next several days. One prominent Illinois Republican, U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood of Peoria, said he was ‘shocked’ that Ryan would run for public office carrying such baggage and called on him to get out of the race.”

Ryan withdrew from the race. Barack Obama easily beat his cannon fodder replacement, Alan Keyes.

On January 29, 2010, when President Obama spoke before GOP House members at the Renaissance Baltimore Harbor Place Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland, Obama and LaHood struck a pose with LaHood pretending to be blocking for Obama in the presence of the Republicans.

Nothing new in that relationship.

Republican Combine Guy #2: William F. Cellini, “King of Clout”

For many years, William Cellini was a prominent Illinois Republican and Executive Director of the Illinois Asphalt Pavement Association. (Remember that organization.)

What’s changed since February 2010, when I wrote the following for Breitbart’s Big Journalism, is that Cellini is now in a federal prison, and, he is no longer an executive director.

“William F. Cellini, long-time GOP state power-broker seconded Gerald Ford’s nomination for President at the 1976 Republican National Convention. For four decades, regardless of which party ran the Illinois state government, Cellini did well, while attracting little attention.”

“That relative obscurity ended in October 2008 when Cellini was indicted by U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald’s office for conspiracy and extortion. The indictment, read here, describes how pay-to-play works in Illinois politics. Here’s an excerpt from Count 2 (of 4) in the indictment:

“As part of the conspiracy, CELLINI, [Stuart] Levine, [‘Tony’] Rezko, and Co-Conspirator A [identified by the Chicago Tribune as former Gov. Rod Blagojevich Chief of Staff Alonzo “Lon” Monk who is cooperating with the Feds] agreed that they would use their influence and Levine’s position [as a Trustee] at TRS [Teachers’ Retirement System of the State of Illinois with $30 billion in assets] to prevent [John] Rosenberg’s firm, Capri Capital, from receiving a planned $220 million allocation of TRS funds unless Rosenberg and Capri Capital agreed to raise or donate a substantial about of funds for the benefit of Public Official A [Blagojevich].

When Rosenberg threatened to expose the plan, CELLINI, Levine, Rezko, and Co-Conspirator A [Monk] acted together to prevent Rosenberg from telling law enforcement about the extortion plan. As a result of Rosenberg’s threat, CELLINI, Levine, Rezko, and Co-Conspirator A agreed that Capri Capital would receive the $220 million allocation, but that Capri Capital and Rosenberg would receive no further funds from the State of Illinois. (pp. 14-15)”

Debbie Wasserman Schultz: NSA Leaker ‘Should be Extradited, Arrested, and Prosecuted’

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said the National Security Agency surveillance leaker should be extradited and prosecuted, CBS Miami reported Tuesday.

According to the local news outlet, the Florida Democratic congresswoman said that while she did not vote for the programs, she believes that the leaker, Edward Snowden should be prosecuted for revealing details about the Prism surveillance program.

“He should be extradited, arrested, and prosecuted,” CBS Miami quoted Wasserman Schultz. “That’s exactly what should happen to him because he violated the law. He violated America’s trust. He jeopardized millions of Americans.”

Wasserman Schultz’ tough talk echoes other lawmakers including New York Republican Rep. Peter King and House Speaker John Boehner.

Detroit Will Be Run by Financial Manager

The state of Michigan is taking on one of the most difficult turnaround projects ever attempted: a rescue of a sprawling city with $14 billion in debt, a depleted tax base, a legacy of government corruption—and very little time left to avert financial collapse.

Republican Gov. Rick Snyder said Friday he plans to appoint an emergency financial manager for Detroit, taking control of the state’s largest city out of the hands of elected leaders. The governor, who has called a revitalization of Detroit critical to sustaining the state’s nascent economic recovery, said he didn’t believe city leaders were addressing rapidly enough Detroit’s ballooning deficits and a persistent cash drought.

At an invitation-only town hall at Wayne State University, Mr. Snyder called it a “sad day” that he “wished had never happened.” But he said that the emergency manager would also bring Detroit new promise. “It’s time to say that we should be moving forward,” he said.

City and state Democratic leaders opposed the governor’s move. “I am deeply disappointed by today’s hostile takeover of Detroit. We need to trust the democratic process, not throw it out,” said Lon Johnson, chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party, in a statement on Friday.

The governor’s decision represents a turning point for a city that was once the industrial capital of America and an engine of its growth. Six decades ago, Detroit was a city of nearly two million people brimming with factory jobs that offered immigrants from the South and abroad a pathway into the American middle class.

Democrats Hope To Ride Gun Control, Minimum Wage To 2014 Victory

Photo Credit: Chuck Burton/APDon’t expect President Obama’s Gun Control plans and calls for a federal Minimum Wage hike to go away anytime soon.

Democrats believe they have a chance to use those both issues to “campaign aggressively” in the 2014 midterms.

The Washington Post’s Greg Sargent has the details from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee:

In an interview today, DCCC chair Steve Israel told me the party’s House candidates will be running aggressively on Obama’s proposals to reduce gun violence and raise the minimum wage. Both will be incorporated into a broader indictment of the GOP as so imprisoned by ideological extremism that the party has been rendered incapable of tackling the major challenges facing the country.

Michelle Malkin: The Blame Righty Mob Falls Silent

Photo Credit: humanevents.comQuestion: How many times over the past four years have exploitative liberal journalists and Democratic leaders rushed to pin random acts of violence on the tea party, Republicans, Fox News and conservative talk radio?

Answer: Nearly a dozen times, including the 2009 massacre of three Pittsburgh police officers (which lib journos falsely blamed on Fox News, Glenn Beck and the “heated, apocalyptic rhetoric of the anti-Obama forces”); the 2009 suicide insurance scam/murder hoax of Kentucky census worker Bill Sparkman (which New York magazine falsely blamed on Rush Limbaugh, “conservative media personalities, websites and even members of Congress”); the 2009 Holocaust museum shooting (which MSNBC commentator Joan Walsh blamed on Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly and yours truly); the 2010 Times Square jihad bomb plot (which Mayor Michael Bloomberg falsely blamed on tea party activists protesting Obamacare); and the 2011 Tucson massacre, which liberals continue to blame on former GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Question: What will this rabid Blame Righty mob do now that an alleged triple-murderer has singled out prominent lefties in the media and Hollywood for fawning praise as part of his crazed manifesto advocating cop-killing?

Answer: Evade, deflect, ignore and whitewash.

This week, former Los Angeles Police Department Officer Christopher Dorner allegedly shot and killed three innocent people in cold blood. He was the subject of a massive manhunt as of Thursday afternoon. Dorner posted an 11,000-word manifesto on Facebook that outlined his chilling plans to target police officers.

Video: Celebrating Obama Supporters-“No More Israel, F–k Those Mother F–kers”

This disturbing video was taken at a celebration of Obama supporters after the election.

Although this is obviously not a scientific sampling of the Democratic Party attitudes toward Israel, it is exceptionally disturbing to see such an open display of antisemitism among Obama’s supporters.

One celebrant is asked why he is there. He says, “Obama.” The interviewer asks what that means to him. His first answer? “No more Israel.”

Another claims to be the son of a Jewish parent but says Israel is wrong about everything. He also says that “I really don’t think that us being with Israel is a good choice for us or for the world.”

Caution: the following, eye-opening video is packed with profanity:

Anti-Trust Lawsuit Filed Alleging GOP & Democrats Conspiring to Prevent Rise of Third Party

Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson filed an anti-trust lawsuit suit in federal court Friday alleging that the Democratic and Republican parties are conspiring to keep third-party candidates out of the presidential debates and, as a result, out of the White House.

In the suit, Johnson’s attorneys argue that the rules of the televised debates, which are set by the major parties, are deliberately structured to bar third party candidates and quash their candidacies. The suit asks that the U.S. District Court in Washington D.C. therefore impose a temporary restraining order blocking the debates until all “constitutionally eligible” candidates be allowed to participate.

“The view that presidential debates are critical to the outcome of the election is now universally held,” the suit reads. “From that premise, it follows that the participation by a candidate in the nationally-televised debates is equally critical to his or her candidacy.”

The debate rules specify that to be included, candidates must receive at least 15% in a major poll. Most major polls do not even list Johnson as an option.

The suit argues that since the president and vice president are paid a salary, the pursuit of the White House can be defined as commerce and thus be regulated by the Sherman Antitrust Act.

DNC Literally in Hock to SEIU

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) owes at least $8 million to a bank owned by one of the largest unions in the country, according to the committee’s most recent financial report.

The DNC initiated an $8 million loan with the Amalgamated Bank of New York on Aug. 10, the report shows, accounting for the majority of the committee’s overall debt of $11 million.

Amalgamated Bank, often described as “America’s Labor Bank,” is a national entity, the majority of which is owned by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), a politically active union with deep ties to the Democratic Party. The SEIU is also involved with the Democracy Alliance, a shadowy group of wealthy left-wing donors founded by billionaire investor George Soros.

The bank announced in an August press release that the DNC had “moved its primary banking relationship” to Amalgamated Bank, which would handle the committee’s “day-to-day banking needs.”

The DNC had previously done most of its banking with Bank of America, which helped finance the Democratic convention in Charlotte.

Video: Bishop Jackson Calls On Blacks to End Their “Slavish Devotion to the Democratic Party”

Alarming many within the Democratic Party, many Christian black leaders are calling on blacks to abandon Democrats. Listen to Bishop E.W. Jackson hammer black genocide by the Democratic-favorite Planned Parenthood, the Democrats’ embracing of gay marriage and equating homosexuality to race. Jackson charges that the Democratic Party thinks blacks are stupid and calls on blacks to end their “slavish devotion to the Democratic Party.” His movement is called “Exodus Now.”
