Republicans Mostly Shut Out of 2024 Watchdog Poll Worker Positions in Detroit

Election officials in Detroit, Michigan need more elephants in the room to get right with the law that calls election workers to equally represent both major parties. Currently, they are hiring mostly Democrats.

Poll workers handle ballots and are well-placed to speak up if anything seems out of order. They are an important part of election integrity infrastructure.

Many states have laws requiring counties to hire an even mix of election workers to create poll worker parity, with a goal of, as close as possible, 50 percent Democrat and 50 percent Republican poll workers. That’s the case in Michigan, where the law requires election commissioners to “appoint an equal number, as nearly as possible, of election inspectors (aka workers) in each election precinct from each major political party.”

But in the city of Detroit, where the heavily Democrat vote take can outweigh the Republican-leaning vote in the rest of the state, approximately 10 percent of poll workers hired for the Aug. 6 primary were Republicans, according to city records obtained by a watchdog group.

“Our constitution was founded on the concept that checks and balances are the best way to ensure fairness,” Patrice Johnson, a founder and chair of Michigan Fair Elections, told The Federalist. “That’s why you have two parties that are supposed to be at the polls, working the polls, for checks and balances. When you don’t have a fair balance like that, you don’t have the checks and balance system working. That’s so critical.” (Read more from “Republicans Mostly Shut Out of 2024 Watchdog Poll Worker Positions in Detroit” HERE)

Kamala Harris’s Detroit Rally Turns into a Chaotic Mess (VIDEO)

Kamala Harris’s rally in Detroit, Michigan, on Wednesday has been widely reported as a disaster, with thousands of attendees left stranded and chaos reigning supreme. The event, which was supposed to showcase Harris’s campaign energy and organization, instead ended in confusion and disarray.

Political scientist Josiah Lippincott, who was on the scene, described the aftermath as a scene of utter chaos. “Complete chaos after the Detroit Kamala rally. It has been 2.5 hours and people are still unable to find shuttles back to their cars. Campaign staff has no idea what is happening,” Lippincott tweeted. The rally was held near a UPS delivery center, leading to a mix-up with dozens of trucks complicating the shuttle service.

According to Lippincott, the situation was further exacerbated by confusion among campaign staff and a growing sense of frustration among rally-goers. “Tempers are high,” he added, highlighting the mounting frustration of those stuck without transportation.

The disorganization was so severe that a staff member reportedly broke down in tears. One of the distressed staffers even shared a troubling image on social media, illustrating the dangerous conditions faced during the debacle. “My bus was nearly in an accident,” the staffer posted, reflecting the chaotic state of the event.

Additional details reveal that the rally’s location was a major factor in the mess. Situated on a spur off the main road and surrounded by a jumble of freight trucks, the rally site proved challenging for buses and shuttles to navigate. “Add a bunch of freight trucks from UPS, confused campaign staff, and tired and hungry rally-goers, and you get complete chaos,” Lippincott explained in another tweet.

Rashida Tlaib Slammed for Response to Death of Synagogue President in Detroit

Tragedy struck in Detroit over the weekend, when 40-year-old Samantha Woll was found dead after a fatal stabbing outside of her home. She had been the president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue since 2022 and had formerly served as an aide to Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), and was a campaign staffer for Attorney General Dana Nessel (D), according to the Detroit Free Press. She had been identified in a statement by Mayor Mike Duggan, the Associated Press mentioned. Woll was also known for having founded the Muslim-Jewish Forum of Detroit. The synagogue is in the 13th Congressional District, not far from Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s (D-MI) 12th Congressional District, who represented the 13th until the maps were redrawn due to redistricting.

Not only has Tlaib pushed the falsehood that Israel was responsible for the explosion at the hospital, her outrage could not be more selective. As of Sunday afternoon, she has not yet posted from either of her X accounts about Woll’s death.

The Detroit Free Press highlighted a post from the congresswoman’s personal page, though there’s nothing on her other Facebook pages, Instagram, or either of her X accounts. This is despite Tlaib’s Facebook referring to her as a “friend.”

Newsweek highlighted outrage over Tlaib’s reaction–or lack thereof–on Saturday night, pointing out “Rashida Tlaib Under Fire After Detroit Synagogue Leader’s Slaying.”

Detroit Mass Murder Suspect Was a Federal Informant

Federal authorities ensured Kenyel Brown stayed out of prison, despite multiple probation violations, before he allegedly went on a crime spree that left six people dead.

A federal law enforcement agency requested Brown remain free, even after he continually failed drug tests, didn’t appear for mandated meetings with drug counselors and was arrested for drunken driving while on probation for a federal weapons charge.

“Our court released Mr. Brown at the behest of a federal law enforcement agency,” U.S. District Court spokesman David Ashenfelter said in an email Tuesday. “We cannot elaborate further at this time.”

It was unclear Tuesday which federal agency requested that Brown remain free. At one point, Brown was cooperating with the government by “providing information concerning his knowledge of others who Mr. Brown believed to be involved with criminal behavior in the neighborhood where Mr. Brown resided,” his attorney, Mike Rataj, wrote in a November 2015 sentencing memo for the weapons charge. . .

Court records show Brown, 40, was given multiple plea deals and other chances before he allegedly went on a recent violent crime spree that ended Monday in an Oak Park backyard, where he shot himself in the head as police closed on him. ‘Feminist’ Lawyer Vows to Defend Doctor Who ‘Circumcises’ Girls

A Detroit-area doctor charged with mutilating the genitals of young girls in violation of federal law walked out of jail Tuesday a free woman as her lawyer was able to arrange the largest unsecured-bond in the jurisdiction’s history.

Dr. Jumana Nagarwala, 44, a member of a Shia Muslim sect that practices a form of female genital cutting, posted a $4.5 million unsecured bond after some 15 friends and family members put their homes and other assets on the line. If she flees, they lose their property.

Most of those who pledged their assets are believed to be fellow members of the Dawoodi Bohra, a Western India-based sect within the Ishmaelite community of Shia Muslims.

There are 22 Dawoodi Bohra mosques across the United States [see list at end of this story].

The names of those who pledged to pay the $4.5 million bond were sealed by U.S. Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Stafford. (Read more from “‘Feminist’ Lawyer Vows to Defend Doctor Who ‘Circumcises’ Girls” HERE)

Detroit-Area Doctor Arrested for Female Genital Mutilation on Minors

A Detroit-area doctor was arrested Thursday for performing female genital mutilation (FGM) on two minor girls, The Detroit News reported.

Jumana Nagarwala is scheduled to appear in federal court Thursday afternoon. A press release from the Department of Justice said Nagarwala is believed to be the first person charged under the federal law prohibiting FGM. The law passed in 1996. The offense is a federal felony.

The News reports the charge came after an FBI investigation of Nagarwala. The FBI interviewed the doctor’s two victims, who identified Nagarwala as the woman who performed the procedure. According to the Justice Department’s press release, the girls were between 6 and 8 years old.

One girl said the doctor “pinched” her and the other said she “got a shot” that made her scream in pain. Both girls were instructed by their parents not to tell anyone of the procedure.

Nagarwala has reportedly denied the allegations. But the FBI’s investigation revealed that the girls’ families checked into a hotel nearby the clinic where the FGM took place. Phone records show that one of the families is from Minnesota and communicated with Nagarwala. One of the girls’ parents also confirmed the trip. According to FBI records, they called the procedure a “cleansing” of extra skin, the News reports.

FGM removes some or all of external female genitalia. There is no medical benefit to the procedure, which causes severe pain and serious health problems. It usually occurs in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The World Health Organization calls FGM “a violation of the human rights of girls and women.” The organization notes that over 200 million women and girls currently living have undergone the procedure.

Over 500,000 women and girls were at risk for FGM in the U.S. in 2012, CNN reported, citing data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CNN noted the significant spike in the number of those at risk from 1990.

Nagarwala is employed by Henry Ford Health System and has been placed on administrative leave, the News reported. (For more from the author of “Detroit-Area Doctor Arrested for Female Genital Mutilation on Minors” please click HERE)

Heart and Sole: Man Walks 21 Miles in Work Commute (+video)

Photo Credit: Detroit Free Press By Bill Laitner. Leaving home in Detroit at 8 a.m., James Robertson doesn’t look like an endurance athlete.

Pudgy of form, shod in heavy work boots, Robertson trudges almost haltingly as he starts another workday.

But as he steps out into the cold, Robertson, 56, is steeled for an Olympic-sized commute. Getting to and from his factory job 23 miles away in Rochester Hills, he’ll take a bus partway there and partway home. And he’ll also walk an astounding 21 miles.

Five days a week. Monday through Friday.

It’s the life Robertson has led for the last decade, ever since his 1988 Honda Accord quit on him.

Every trip is an ordeal of mental and physical toughness for this soft-spoken man with a perfect attendance record at work. And every day is a tribute to how much he cares about his job, his boss and his coworkers. Robertson’s daunting walks and bus rides, in all kinds of weather, also reflect the challenges some metro Detroiters face in getting to work in a region of limited bus service, and where car ownership is priced beyond the reach of many. Strangers Raise $40,000 for Man Who Walks 21 Miles Per Day for Work

By Jared Keever. It wasn’t even planned, but it took less than a day.

Less than 24 hours after the Detroit Free Press ran a story about 56-year-old James Robertson and his grueling 21-mile roundtrip walking commute, people, moved by his story, have banded to together to raise money to help Robertson with his long, and sometimes frigid, commute.

The original story ran Sunday morning. By that evening 19-year-old Evan Leedy, a student at nearby Wayne State University, had set up a GoFundMe site with a modest $5,000 goal to help Robertson buy a car.

“I just used my phone. I created the go-funding site and within an hour we had $2,000,” Leedy told the Detroit Free Press in a follow-up story.

By the time the story went to press, the site had raised $30,000. It has now raised more than $40,000. (Read more from this story HERE)

Thousands Go Without Water as Detroit Cuts Service for Nonpayment

Photo Credit: Jessica J. Trevino / APIt has been six weeks since the city turned off Nicole Hill’s water.

Dirty dishes are piled in the sink of her crowded kitchen, where the yellow-and-green linoleum floor is soiled and sticky. A small garbage can is filled with water from a neighbor, while a bigger one sits outside in the yard, where she hopes it will collect some rain. She’s developed an intricate recycling system of washing the dishes, cleaning the floor and flushing the toilet with the same water.

“It’s frightening, because you think this is something that only happens somewhere like Africa,” said Hill, a single mother who is studying homeland security at a local college. “But now I know what they’re going through — when I get somewhere there’s a water faucet, I drink until my stomach hurts.”

Hill is one of thousands of residents in Detroit who have had their water and sewer services turned off as part of a crackdown on customers who are behind on their bills. In April, the city set a target of cutting service to 3,000 customers a week who were more than $150 behind on their bills. In May, the water department sent out 46,000 warnings and cut off service to 4,531. The city says that cutting off water is the only way to get people to pay their bills as Detroit tries to emerge from bankruptcy — the utility is currently owed $90 million from customers, and nearly half the city’s 300,000 or so accounts are past due.

But cutting off water to people already living in poverty came under criticism last week from the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, whose experts said that Detroit was violating international standards by cutting off access to water. “When there is genuine inability to pay, human rights simply forbids disconnections,” Catarina de Albuquerque, the office’s expert on the human right to water and sanitation, said in the communique.

Michigan Gov. Wants Visas for Immigrants Who’ll ‘Stay for 5 Years’ in Detroit

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder asked the federal government Thursday to set aside thousands of work visas for bankrupt Detroit, a bid to revive the decaying city by attracting talented immigrants who are willing to move there and stay for five years.

The Republican governor has routinely touted immigration as a powerful potential force for growing Detroit’s economy, saying immigrant entrepreneurs start many small businesses and file patents at twice the rate of U.S.-born citizens.

“Let’s send a message to the entire world: Detroit, Michigan, is open to the world,” Snyder said at a news conference.

The proposal involves EB-2 visas, which are offered every year to legal immigrants who have advanced degrees or show exceptional ability in certain fields.

But the governor’s ambitious plan faces significant hurdles: The visas are not currently allocated by region or state. And the number he is seeking — 50,000 over five years — would be a quarter of the total EB-2 visas offered.

Detroit Police Chief: Concealed Weapons Permits Save Lives

Detroit— If more citizens were armed, criminals would think twice about attacking them, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said Thursday.

Urban police chiefs are typically in favor of gun control or reluctant to discuss the issue, but Craig on Thursday was candid about how he’s changed his mind.

“When we look at the good community members who have concealed weapons permits, the likelihood they’ll shoot is based on a lack of confidence in this Police Department,” Craig said at a press conference at police headquarters, adding that he thinks more Detroit citizens feel safer, thanks in part to a 7 percent drop in violent crime in 2013.

Craig said he started believing that legal gun owners can deter crime when he became police chief in Portland, Maine, in 2009.

“Coming from California (Craig was on the Los Angeles police force for 28 years), where it takes an act of Congress to get a concealed weapon permit, I got to Maine, where they give out lots of CCWs (carrying concealed weapon permits), and I had a stack of CCW permits I was denying; that was my orientation.
