Wait–Who Did the Jacksonville Fire Marshal Blame for the Madden Tournament Shooting?

Last weekend, David Katz, a man who was hospitalized twice for mental health issues, opened fire and killed two people at a Madden 19 tournament in Jacksonville, Florida. He wounded at least nine more as well; Katz reportedly snapped after losing in the event. A resident of South Baltimore, he bought two handguns legally, despite his mental health history. Also, there are more questions concerning the purchases since Maryland has the one handgun a month rule. . .

Katz was hospitalized twice for mental issues during his teenage years, being prescribed anti-psychotics, and having the police summoned by his parents, but he wasn’t involuntarily committed. Even if Katz had a concealed carry permit, which raises more eyebrows due to his mental state, Maryland and Florida don’t share reciprocity. In short, he had his guns in Florida illegally. It goes without saying; it’s his fault, right? Well, according to the Jacksonville Fire Marshal, it’s the fault of Chicago Pizza, who hosted the event (via Florida Times Union) [emphasis mine]:

Chicago Pizza was cited late Wednesday for having an un-permitted gaming room by the Jacksonville Fire Prevention Division, the same space where Sunday’s mass shooting left three people dead including a 24-year-old gunman from Baltimore, and about a dozen others injured. . .

City fire inspectors say Chicago Pizza was not permitted to hold the video game tournament that turned deadly at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, according to its Wednesday code violation report. The report states the restaurant’s last approved building layout was submitted back in 2009, but the restaurant altered the layout plan without approval. That created the GLHF Game Bar, where this past weekend’s Madden NFL 19 video gaming tournament was held. That makes it an un-permitted game area, the fire department said.

“If Chicago Pizza would not have altered the layout plan by creating an un-permitted game room area, the video game tournament would not have occurred, and thus, this incident would not have occurred at the Jacksonville Landing,” the fire department statement read. “This area was neither authorized nor a part of their submitted and approved building layout plan.”

Mass Shooting at Florida Video Game Tournament Leaves Multiple Fatalities

Four people are dead and at least nine others wounded Sunday afternoon in a mass shooting during a video game tournament at the Jacksonville Landing.

Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams said at 4:30 p.m. that the gunman, a white man, is dead, but he wouldn’t confirm casually counts, so it wasn’t known if the four dead included the shooter.

News4Jax sources say the suspect, a gamer from the Baltimore area armed with a semiautomatic handgun, killed himself.

Williams said SWAT teams had completed a methodical search of the Landing and the immediate area and found no additional gunmen. . .

Randy Wyse, president of the firefighters’ union, said Engine Company 1 was training in the area and victims began running up to them before they received the emergency call. He said victims ran as far as the CSX building, about a half-mile away to get help. (Read more from “Mass Shooting at Florida Video Game Tournament Leaves Multiple Fatalities” HERE)

An 11-Year-Old Boy Hacked a Simulated State Voting System

An 11-year-old boy needed less than 10 minutes to hack into a replica of Florida’s election results website during an event that was part of a weekend for hackers, the convention’s organizers said.

An 11-year-old girl did the same in just under 15 minutes, tripling vote totals in some cases, organizers announced.

“This strikes at the heart of the idea that you’d need thousands of Russians with physical access to the machines to get into them, when in fact, no, you don’t — you need one Russian to bribe a Chinese manufacturing-plant official, and now all of a sudden they own an entire class of machines nationwide,” said Jake Braun, a former White House liaison to the Department of Homeland Security, according to ABC.

Overall, 35 children between the ages of six and 17, hacked their way into replicas of the websites of six swing states. The hacking event was part of Def Con security convention, Newsmax reported.

Participants changed party names and added as many as 12 billion votes to candidates. Names of the candidates were also changed, with some children using names such as “Bob Da Builder” and “Richard Nixon’s head.”

“These websites are so easy to hack we couldn’t give them to adult hackers — they’d be laughed off the stage,” Braun said. “They thought hacking a voter website was interesting 20 years ago. We had to give it to kids to actually make it challenging.”

Florida officials tried to downplay the significance of the achievement.

“It is not a real-life scenario, and it offers a wholly inaccurate representation of the security of Florida’s elections websites, online databases and voting systems,” said Sarah Revell, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of State, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

The National Association of Secretaries of State also doubted the feat could be replicated in real life.

“Our main concern with the approach taken by DEFCON is that it utilizes a pseudo environment which in no way replicates state election systems, networks or physical security,” it said in a statement.

“To me that statement says that the secretaries of states are not taking this seriously. Although it’s not the real voting results it’s the results that get released to the public. And that could cause complete chaos,” said Nico Sell, who helped organize the event.

“The site may be a replica but the vulnerabilities that these kids were exploiting were not replicas, they’re the real thing.”

“These are very accurate replicas of all of the sites,” Sell said, according to PBS. “These things should not be easy enough for an 8-year-old kid to hack within 30 minutes, it’s negligent for us as a society.”

“I think the general public does not understand how large a threat this is, and how serious a situation that we’re in right now with our democracy,” she said.

Matt Blaze, a professor of computer and information science at the University of Pennsylvania, said those in charge of elections need to become “more knowledgeable about voter technology.”

“It’s not surprising that these precocious, bright kids would be able to do it because the websites that are on the internet are vulnerable, we know they are vulnerable,” he said. “What was interesting is just how utterly quickly they were able to do it.” (For more from the author of “An 11-Year-Old Boy Hacked a Simulated State Voting System” please click HERE)

Florida Restaurant Takes a Stand Against the NFL – and Uses It to Help Veterans

By The Blaze. A Florida restaurant owner figured out a way to respond to national anthem protests in the NFL in a way that helps those whom the anthem honors, according to WTVT-TV.

The owners of Beef O’Brady’s restaurant in Brooksville are pulling their financial support of the league by cancelling the premium NFL television package, and they’re using the savings to benefit veterans.

“This is what we are doing, this is the stance we take, and the money we would’ve spent, we are going to spend on our vets,” said Curtis West, who owns the restaurant with his wife, Janet. . .

The Wests subscribed to the NFL Sunday Ticket Package through DIRECTV. This year, because of the national anthem protests the league has allowed, the restaurant is cancelling that package and giving a 40 percent discount to veterans on Sundays during the NFL season.

“Beef O’Brady’s will not be financially supporting the NFL this year due to their lack of compassion and gratitude for our American service members,” a poster in the restaurant reads. “Our national anthem is one of the methods we as American citizens have always used to show our appreciation to all military service members, past or present, alive or dead. This tradition deserves respect and unfortunately, the NFL does not feel the same way. (Read more from “Florida Restaurant Takes a Stand Against the NFL – and Uses It to Help Veterans” HERE)

Local Bar Won’t Buy NFL Package Because of Player Protests

By Fox 13. The issue of NFL national anthem protests has stirred up debate from coast to coast. And now, a Brooksville restaurant owner is taking a stand on kneeling.

Curtis and Janet West, who own Beef O’Brady’s on 31120 Cortez Boulevard in Brooksville, say they’re canceling their DIRECTV NFL Sunday Ticket package this season.

“Last year, with the kneeling and the disrespect to our veterans and our flag and our country, I was very upset,” said Curtis West.

“I am an American patriot,” West said. “I am not that kind of guy, but it makes me angry, it really does. The people that are doing the protests, I don’t believe their intention is to disrespect our veterans but that is what has come from this.”

“This is what we are doing, this is the stance we take, and the money we would’ve spent, we are going to spend on our vets,” West added. (Read more from “Local Bar Won’t Buy NFL Package Because of Player Protests” HERE)

Father of Two Parkland Survivors Senselessly Murdered

A man whose two children survived the Florida school massacre was shot to death in a robbery this week.

Ayub Ali, 61, was putting merchandise on shelves in his North Lauderdale, Florida, convenience store on Tuesday when his store was robbed, Fox News reported.

“The suspect entered Aunt Molly’s Food Store. He took money from the cash register and left. The thief returned shortly after and shot Ali,” the Broward County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release, according to the Miami Herald. The sheriff’s office released a video of the incident on Thursday.

On Friday, Tyrone Fields Jr., 19, surrendered to police in connection with the death, WSVN reported. Fields has been charged with murder and armed robbery.

“The homicide detectives’ investigation led them to an associate of Fields’ who encouraged him to meet with law enforcement,” according to police spokeswoman Joy Oglesby, the Miami Herald reported.

Family members could not understand why the robber, having taken cash, returned to kill Ali.

“If you came for the money, take the money and go,” said his widow, Farhana, according to CNN. “Why did you have to kill my husband?”

Joaquin Nieves had come to leave flowers at the store Saturday.

“They caught him, Ali. They got him. They got him, papi. Don’t worry, you can rest in peace up there now,” said Nieves. “God bless. I’m so glad they caught him.”

He said whoever killed Ali deserves to be punished.

“He deserves to get whatever he gets, I don’t care what he is, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Haitian, I don’t care, he needs to go to jail,” Nieves said, according to CBS.

Ali is survived by his wife and four children, two of whom were students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, the scene of a Februrary school shooting that left 17 people dead. Ali’s children were not injured.

Ali was remembered fondly after his death.

“He was a very generous person and a nice person and like my younger brother he is from the same village in Bangladesh. He was a very religious person and very friendly. It is very sad. It is very sad. These things happen but this is so unfortunate,” family spokesman Mirza Mustaque said, WFOR reported. Sheriff’s Deputy With an AR-15 Rescues Girl Trapped in Tree by 9-Foot Alligator

By The Blaze. A 15-year-old Florida girl found herself hanging on to a tree for her life Friday afternoon as a large and aggressive alligator waited, hissing just feet below her, according to the Washington Post.

The girl, Jordan Broderick, clung to a tree branch nearly to the point of exhaustion until a sheriff’s deputy showed up and made quick work of the gator, saving the girl’s life.

Before the officer arrived, however, there was a half an hour of panic as Broderick’s family feared for her life and frantically communicated with 911 dispatch. . .

Finally, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Mitch Blackmon was the first to arrive on the scene. When he got there, he knew exactly what to do.

“I fired one single .223 round from my Bushmaster AR-15, killing the alligator,” Blackmon wrote on the incident report. (Read more from “Sheriff’s Deputy With an Ar-15 Rescues Girl Trapped in Tree by 9-Foot Alligator” HERE)

An Alligator Trapped a Teenage Girl in a Tree. Then a Deputy Arrived With an Ar-15.

By Washington Post. . . One gator in particular — a nine-foot specimen — cut a path toward the girl floating on a raft in the Ocala National Forest in central Florida on Friday afternoon.

She thought fast, scurrying up a tree branch hanging over the water. The alligator hissed and waited at the base of the tree. . .

Jordan, her mother and the dispatcher may not have known what the alligators are coded with instinct to know. July marks the end of mating season, when the reptiles are particularly aggressive and territorial, Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens spokesman Ron Magill told The Post. . .

By the time Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Mitch Blackmon arrived, ahead of the marine unit, Jordan had been in the tree for about 30 minutes. She was screaming and exhausted from hanging on, according to the incident report. (Read more from “An Alligator Trapped a Teenage Girl in a Tree. Then a Deputy Arrived With an Ar-15.” HERE)

FL Senate: Yes, Democrat Bill Nelson Could Be in Deep, DEEP Trouble

In the Sunshine State, Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, is banking on incumbency and gun control to get him over the top. He’s been lucky throughout his Senate career in facing opponents who haven’t been the best, especially during his 2000 re-election campaign. This year is different—and he knew it. Last year, Politico reported that Nelson met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats ahead what will be a true contest. He’ll be fighting for his political life and he needs money. Republican Gov. Rick Scott, who is term-limited, has tossed his hat into the ring. Despite his recent betrayal of Second Amendment rights by signing an appalling law that increased the age of gun purchases to 21, he’s a solid candidate. Independently wealthy, he can fund his own race. He’s also proving himself to be an adept campaigner, hitting Hispanic outreach hard, which is making Democratic activists very nervous. Another startling sign: only 49 percent know who the hell Nelson is in the state. Not a good sign for a three-term incumbent (via Politico):

Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s Senate campaign has a Spanish-language web page. Sen. Bill Nelson’s doesn’t.

Scott is advertising in Spanish. Nelson isn’t. . .

For Democrats who recognize protecting Nelson’s seat is essential to their hopes of winning a Senate majority this fall, the veteran senator’s lackluster outreach to one of the fastest-growing voting blocs in the nation’s largest swing state is causing alarm.

The depth of Nelson’s troubles — and Scott’s advantage — came into sharp focus last month in four focus groups conducted in Central Florida’s influential Puerto Rican community, where few knew who Nelson was, despite his three Senate terms and holding elected Florida office for 41 years.

Confusion When Florida City Warns Residents of a ‘Zombie Invasion’ After System Hack

As if things aren’t strange enough already in this country, Lake Worth, Fla., residents received a cellphone alert from the city about a power outage and were also warned to look out for zombies — yes, as in the walking dead.

Officials are not entirely sure, but it appears someone made a humorous, albeit ill-advised edit to the city’s power outage notification system, according to WPTV News. The notice sent out read: “There are now far less than seven thousand three hundred and eighty customers involved due to extreme zombie activity. Restoration time uncertain.”

Lake Worth spokesman Ben Kerr told the Palm Beach Post the city is looking into the notice sent out Monday morning around 1:45 a.m. that warned of a “zombie alert for residents of Lake Worth and Terminus.” . . .

Push notifications from government officials are becoming common, but hacks and other mistakes can have significant impact, as seen in Hawaii in January, when an errant message warn residents of an imminent ballistic-missle threat. . .

Springettsbury Township Police Department took to Facebook to have a little fun after a traffic board was hacked, assuring residents that the city is zombie-free. (Read more from “Confusion When Florida City Warns Residents of a ‘Zombie Invasion’ After System Hack” HERE)

Dead Victim’s Family Horrified over Smiling Suspect’s Mugshot

Angenette Welk of Ocala, Florida, hit the news this week not because of the crime she committed, but the image she portrayed in her mugshot.

Just before midnight on May 10, Welk failed to hit her brakes when approaching stopped vehicles in front of her on U.S. Highway 27, crashing into two cars. She rear-ended the Hyundai Elantra driven by 18-year-old Shiyanne Kroll with enough force to cause fatal injuries to Kroll’s passenger, Sandra Clarkson. . .

Welk faces charges of DUI, DUI with property damage and DUI with great bodily harm. Upon news of the death of Clarkson, Florida Highway Patrol officials are seeking an upgraded charge of DUI manslaughter.

Keonna Sciacca, Clarkson’s other daughter, said of the tragedy, “It’s definitely wrecked our family forever, not just temporarily, this was a permanent thing that (Welk) did. (I’m) trying to cope with the fact that I won’t see (my mom) walk again, she won’t be home when I get home from work or in the mornings when I get home from work.”

After seeing Welk’s mugshot, Kroll added, “That disgusts me and that means she has no remorse for what she did at all and I hope that judge sees that picture and says the same thing.” (Read more from “Dead Victim’s Family Horrified over Smiling Suspect’s Mugshot” HERE)

Psycho Judge Resigns After Viciously Berating Sick Woman Begging for Help Who Died Three Days Later

By Bizpac Review. A Florida circuit court judge’s roughly 30-year-long career deservedly crashed and burned this week after courtroom footage surfaced that shows her mercilessly and unnecessarily berating a disabled defendant. And not just any disabled defendant, but one who died three days later.

Recorded last Sunday, the footage shows former Broward County Circuit Judge Merrillee Ehrlich, a Democrat, spouting an endless stream of bilge at Sandra Faye Twiggs, 59, a wheel-chair-bound woman who suffered from asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Why all the venom? Because Twiggs needed help, according to the Miami Herald, but every time she tried to speak, Ehrlich shut her down.

The paper notes that Twiggs wound up in jail after she got into a domestic dispute with her daughter. During her incarceration, Twiggs reportedly had difficulty obtaining her medications.

When she tried to inform Ehrlich of this problem during her court appearance, the judge snapped at her, saying, “Ma’am, I am not here to talk to you about your breathing treatments!” (Read more from “Psycho Judge Resigns After Viciously Berating Sick Woman Begging for Help Who Died Three Days Later” HERE)

Watch This Judge Brutally Berate a Woman in a Wheelchair. The Woman Died. The Judge Has Quit.

By The Miami Herald. A Broward County circuit judge delivered a blistering, arm-waving, face-palming, tongue-lashing to a frail, out-of-breath woman — pushed into court in a wheelchair — who was facing misdemeanor charges following a family feud.

Three days later, the defendant died.

Judge Merrillee Ehrlich has resigned, although it is unclear when that resignation was provided and when it becomes effective . . .

“It is not appropriate for anyone to endure that kind of treatment,” said Finkelstein’s chief assistant, Gordon Weekes. “All that was required was a bit of patience, and a bit of respect to allow this lady to speak, to gather herself and to breathe.” . . .

Twiggs suffered from asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, also called COPD. She ended up under arrest after squabbling with her 19-year-old daughter. (Read more from “Watch This Judge Brutally Berate a Woman in a Wheelchair. The Woman Died. The Judge Has Quit.” HERE)
