President Joe Biden will convene with world leaders at the Group of Seven meeting in Japan, but the White House has canned his trip to Australia and Papua New Guinea amid a debt ceiling standoff.
“President Biden will return to the United States on Sunday, following the completion of the G-7 summit, in order to be back for meetings with congressional leaders to ensure that Congress takes action by the deadline to avert default,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre wrote in a statement Tuesday.
Instead, Biden invited Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for a state visit at a mutually agreed upon time. The president will additionally meet with Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Quad members, on the sidelines of the G-7.
“What I can speak to is G-7 and going to Hiroshima,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters earlier Tuesday. “We’re reevaluating the rest of the trip right now.” (Read more from “White House Cuts Short Biden’s Trip Abroad Amid Debt Ceiling Talks” HERE)
U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel on Wednesday said he has “full confidence” that the Japanese government will take the necessary steps to ban discrimination against LGBTQ people.
Sexual minorities have been campaigning for the government to adopt an anti-discrimination law after an aide to Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters he wouldn’t want to live next to LGBTQ people and that citizens would flee Japan if same-sex marriages were allowed. Kishida quickly fired the aide, Masayoshi Arai.
Activists are urging the government to enact anti-discrimination legislation before Japan hosts a summit of the Group of Seven industrialized nations in Hiroshima in May. Japan is the only G-7 member that has not recognized same-sex marriage or enacted an anti-discrimination law for sexual minorities.
“I have full confidence based on the swiftness of the prime minister’s actions,” Emanuel said at a news conference. (Read more from “US Attempting to Force Acceptance of Perversion on Yet Another Country, This Time Japan” HERE)

Video footage emerged over the weekend that showed how a quick thinking bodyguard for Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida saved the political leader from harm after a man threw a explosive device at him during a campaign event.
Kishida, who was campaigning in western Japan, was not injured in the attack, but a police officer did receive treatment for some minor injuries. Police immediately detained a young man — tackling him to the ground — after “the suspicious object” was thrown at Kishida.
Video shows that a bodyguard standing closely to Kishida saw the moment that the object hit the ground near where he was standing and immediately ran toward the device to kick it away while deploying a shield to protect the leader.

The explosive happened several seconds after the prime minister’s team whisked him away. After the bang, people scream and run away while white smoke can be seen rising from where the explosion went off.
Video appeared to show bystanders grabbing the suspect, who is a 24-year-old named Kimura. (Read more from “WATCH: Bodyguard’s Quick Thinking Saves Japan’s Prime Minister From Hurled Explosive Device” HERE)

Japan’s birth rate sank to another record low in 2022, marking a long and steady decline which also saw a record number of post-war deaths in the country.
The country saw 799,728 births in 2022, according to CNN, the fewest on record and the first time the number has dropped below 800,000. Combined with the record 1.58 million deaths, the country’s population replacement rate is in trouble despite the country allowing in more immigrants than it is colloquially considered to.
From 2000 to 2010, Japan’s migrant population increased by about 500,000. However, Pew Research reported that the country’s 2015 immigrant population was under 2%. Despite this, a 2018 poll showed that 71% of Japanese respondents preferred immigration numbers to either stay “about the same” or for the country to welcome fewer, at a rate of 58% and 13% respectively.
The prime minister, Fumio Kishida, reportedly stated in early 2023 that Japan is “on the brink of not being able to maintain social functions.”
“In thinking of the sustainability and inclusiveness of our nation’s economy and society, we place child-rearing support as our most important policy,” said Kishida. (Read more from “Japan’s Birth Rate Just Half of Its Record-Setting Death Rate, Most Deaths in a Year Since WWII” HERE)

Japanese officials sealed off a beach on Tuesday morning to investigate a large, mysterious metal sphere of unknown origin.
The “suspicious” ball was reported by a local resident in Hamamatsu, a southern coastal city about 155 miles from Tokyo, who called police just before 9 a.m. saying “a large round object was washed up on the beach,” Asahi News reported.
The woman said her husband first noticed the object while taking a walk on the weekend.
JAPAN — A mysterious metal sphere discovered on the shore of Shizuoka.
According to police, the object is a sphere with a diameter of around 4 feet, and is believed to be made of iron as it has a coating of rust. (Read more from “Officials Investigate Mysterious Sphere Washed Up on Beach” HERE)

I hadn’t actually run across this character before so I thought perhaps some of our readers might not have had him on their radar either. His name is Yusuke Narita and he’s a professor of economics at Yale with a very large social media following in both the United States and his native Japan. But his theories on debt, inflation or interest rates aren’t what draw so much attention. Though his specialty is supposed to be economics, Dr. Narita seems to spend a great deal of time pondering the issue of falling birth rates and increasing life spans, particularly in Japan. And he seems to believe that he knows the answer. That would be “mass suicide and mass seppuku of the elderly.” And he talks about it a lot. This guy is so far out there on the fringe of this topic that even the very liberal New York Times described him by saying “his pronouncements could hardly sound more drastic.”
In interviews and public appearances, Yusuke Narita, an assistant professor of economics at Yale, has taken on the question of how to deal with the burdens of Japan’s rapidly aging society.
“I feel like the only solution is pretty clear,” he said during one online news program in late 2021. “In the end, isn’t it mass suicide and mass ‘seppuku’ of the elderly?” Seppuku is an act of ritual disembowelment that was a code among dishonored samurai in the 19th century.
Last year, when asked by a school-age boy to elaborate on his mass seppuku theories, Dr. Narita graphically described to a group of assembled students a scene from “Midsommar,” a 2019 horror film in which a Swedish cult sends one of its oldest members to commit suicide by jumping off a cliff.
In another interview, Narita suggested there might be an alternative for those without the will to take their own life. That would be euthanasia. And if the elderly person in question is still being stubborn? No problem. “The possibility of making [euthanasia] mandatory in the future will come up in discussion.” (Read more from “Yale Professor: “Mandatory Euthanasia” Will Be on the Table” HERE)

The United States and Japan on Tuesday deployed fighter jets for joint exercises in response to North Korea’s test firing of a ballistic missile over Japan.
The drills were held in airspace west of Japan’s Kyushu region, involving eight Japanese fighter jets and four U.S. fighter jets, according to Japan’s Joint Staff.
In a statement [pdf], Japan’s Joint Staff said the security situation surrounding Japan has become “increasingly severe,” citing North Korea’s test-firing of a ballistic missile that flew over Japan early on Tuesday.
“The drills will confirm the Japanese and U.S. forces’ readiness, demonstrate the strong determination of Japan and the United States to deal with any situation, and further strengthen the deterrence of the Japan-U.S. alliance,” it stated. By Breitbart. Eyewitnesses described Friday’s assassination of Japan’s former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo as a scene of utter chaos, saying onlookers of the attack fainted in shock as pieces of plastic debris flew off of the still-unidentified weapon used to kill him.
Abe, Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, died on Friday in the city of Nara after a man now identified as 41-year-old Yamagami Tetsuya shot him with what Japanese media indicate at press time appeared to be a homemade firearm. Doctors reported that Abe suffered cardiac arrest as a result of wounds in his neck. He was 67 years old.
Abe, of the long-ruling conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), left a legacy of advocating for Japan to take on a larger international role, including expanding its minimal defense capabilities and investing in a closer relationship with America.
Shortly before his death, Abe spent much of his public time following his resignation in 2020 warning that world must act to contain the threat of Chinese communism and urging America to expand its support for the nation of Taiwan, which China routinely threatens to invade. Chinese media outlets threatened “routine” military exercises around Japan as recently as Wednesday in response to the LDP’s concerns about Beijing’s belligerence.
Police have yet to reveal a motive for the shooting at press time, though Japanese newspapers report that Yamagami told police he intended to kill Abe because he was “dissatisfied” with his political performance. Some reports indicate that Yamagami also gave police other unrelated information, such as a claim that he wanted to kill an unnamed “religious” leader, instead of or in addition to Abe.

Japan: One of World’s Most Gun-Controlled Countries Bans ‘Assault Weapons,’ Handguns, and Private Gun Sales
By Breitbart. Japan has some of the most “restrictive” gun controls in the world – legal provisions that appeared not to prevent the assassination of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo at the hands of an apparent lone gunman on Friday. . .
Japan has some of the most stringent gun controls in the world.
The University of Sydney’s gunpolicy.org labels Japan’s gun controls as “restrictive” and notes they include an handgun ban, an “assault weapons” ban, and a ban on private gun sales.
Certain rifles and shotguns are the only guns that the Japanese people are allowed to own, but the process to legally obtain one of those is arduous. For example, a would-be rifle or shotgun owner must first acquire a gun owner’s license and that process includes passage of a criminal and mental health background check, including third-party character references.
Moreover, the would-be gun owner’s family history is searched to ensure no proclivity to violence. (Read more from “Japan: One of World’s Most Gun-Controlled Countries Bans ‘Assault Weapons,’ Handguns, and Private Gun Sales” HERE)

The largest Chinese aircraft carrier group reportedly ever assembled is conducting combat training near a U.S. naval base in Japan, according to multiple Chinese media sources on Tuesday.
China’s aircraft carrier “Liaoning,” as well as seven other vessels, are reportedly performing a naval expedition in close proximity to Nagasaki, Japan, and the U.S. Navy base at Sasebo, according to a Tuesday report from China’s Observer News translated by the Daily Caller News Foundation. The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier is also in the vicinity, according to the report.
The U.S. Naval Institute fleet tracker placed both the USS Abraham Lincoln, as well as the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier in the waters near Sasebo on May 2.
China’s naval expedition comes a week after its military reportedly shadowed a U.S. Navy destroyer conducting a freedom of navigation exercise in the Taiwan Strait last Tuesday.
China’s military news outlet confirmed its nation’s aircraft carrier group was operating in the western Pacific Ocean in a Tuesday bulletin translated by the DCNF, but stated the “routine training operation” was “not directed against any party.” (Read more from “Massive Chinese Fleet Seen Barreling Toward U.S. Naval Base” HERE)

A massive 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Fukushima, triggering blackouts and a one-meter-high tsunami advisory in the region 11 years after it was devastated by a deadly quake.
The earthquake near Namie, Japan, was reported just before 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday, which is around midnight Thursday there. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake struck about 36 miles below the sea.
A tsunami advisory was issued but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later said there was no longer a threat. The Japan Meteorological Agency, however, kept a low-risk advisory in place. . .
Two aftershocks in Japan left seven people injured including six from falling objects, the station reported. An 80-year-old man was hospitalized after he tripped and sprained his leg. (Read more from “7.3 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Japan” HERE)
