Anti-ICE Protesters Swarm 101 Freeway, 500 U.S. Marines Stand ‘Prepared To Deploy’

The United States Northern Command confirmed that 500 U.S. Marines stood on alert in “prepared to deploy status” at Twentynine Palms, California, as news broke that protesters had swarmed onto the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles.

Nick Sortor shared video from local news coverage of the ongoing protests, which showed protesters blocking the highway near Union Station at Alameda St. “Hundreds of drivers are now trapped on the expressway with violent rioters,” he said in the accompanying X post.

The U.S. Northern Command issued a press release late on Sunday detailing the number of troops who had already been mobilized — as well as those who were standing on alert in case they were needed to augment those already the ground.

The Marine Corps Inspected Every Single Barracks. It Was as Bad as They Feared

The Marine Corps’ service-wide inspection that ended March 15 found that many Marines are living in “uninhabitable” conditions, but the path to fixing a decades-old problem will not be easy, according to Marines who spoke to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

In February, Marine Corps acting Commandant Gen. Christopher Mahoney issued guidance for installation commanders to conduct “wall-to-wall” inspections of conditions at all housing facilities for single Marines by March 15. While a final assessment of the barracks is not yet ready, initial results of the investigation, which spanned 60,000 rooms at 25 installations across the globe, show that some Marines are living in filthy, cramped quarters, often with broken appliances and lack of privacy — “consistent” with the findings of a watchdog report released in September, the service confirmed to the DCNF. . .

Still, one Marine stationed at the barracks in Washington, D.C., told the DCNF no one should be surprised at the results.

“It’s been a problem for decades. It’s been a problem for as long as I’ve been in. I think that this current thing is somewhat of a stunt — acting like we didn’t know,” the Marine told the DCNF on condition of anonymity in order to speak freely.

“It’s silly to think that it’s just now being a problem. Now the current commandant, the sergeant major addressing it — which I don’t think is a bad thing. I think it’s a good thing. They mean it. Why did it take 20 years, 30 years?” the Marine said. (Read more from “The Marine Corps Inspected Every Single Barracks. It Was as Bad as They Feared” HERE)

Helicopter With 5 U.S. Marines Found After Going Missing; Search for Crew Ongoing

Search and rescue officials have located a U.S. Military helicopter that went missing on Tuesday while carrying five Marines during a routine training exercise in southern California.

“The U.S. Marine Corps is searching for five U.S. Marines assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361 Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing,” the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing said in a statement. “The Marines were flying a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter during a routine training flight from Creech Air Force Base to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on Feb. 6. 2024, when the aircraft was reported overdue.”

The Marines said that the helicopter was found Wednesday morning by civil authorities in Pine Valley, California.

“The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing is managing search and rescue efforts through the Wing Operations Command Center and using ground and aviation assets to locate the aircrew in coordination with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and multiple federal, state and local agencies,” the statement added.

Marine Who Was Discharged, Court Martialed for Refusing COVID-19 Vaccine Arrested for Attempting to Return to Her Base

Former Marine Catherine Arnett, who spent 113 days in the brig and was eventually discharged for refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccine in 2022, was arrested earlier this month for attempting to return to her duty station in Japan, according to Stars and Stripes.

Arnett’s case became a cause célèbre when she refused to take the COVID-19 vaccine in 2022, citing religious objections to the fact that the vaccine was developed using research that involved fetal tissue cells. Arnett’s request for a religious exemption was denied. The Marine Corps notified Arnett that she faced administrative separation due to this decision, but Arnett twice refused to board a flight to the United States, or indeed to even leave the base, which led to her being court martialed.

This set in motion a chain of events that led to multiple set trial dates and unsuccesful attempts to discharge Arnett. Finally, in June, the Corps informed Arnett that charges against her were being dropped without prejudice, and that she would be administratively discharged. At the time, Marine Maj. Rob Martins, a spokesman for the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing told Task and Purpose, “This decision was made judiciously while balancing what was best for Lance Cpl. Arnett and the United States Marine Corps.” . . .

Arnett, meanwhile, apparently did not agree that her separation from the Marine Corps was best for her. According to Stars and Stripes, Arnett was detained on December 1st while attempting to enter MCAS Iwakuni around 2:30am. She was detained and turned over to local police later that day, who finally released her “last week.” Arnett did not respond directly to Stars and Stripes in a request for comment, but someone purporting to be her secretary claimed that Arnett was re-entering the base as an act of civil disobedience. Marine Corps Central Command Cancels Annual Ball Due to ‘Unforeseen Operational Commitments’

U.S. Marine Corps Major Gen. Chris A. McPhillips announced Tuesday that the 248th Marine Corps Ball has been canceled by the U.S. Central Command, citing “unforeseen operational commitments.”

McPhillips announced the update to the annual event, scheduled on November 16 in Tampa, Florida, for former and retired maritime land forces to get dressed to the nines and celebrate the tradition and legacy of the Marine Corps.

“Due to unforeseen operational commitments and the nature of our current mission, it is with great regret that we must cancel this year’s event,” McPhillips wrote in a letter.

The Central Command’s decision to cancel the celebration resulted from the Marine Corps’ “primary responsibility” to guarantee the defense and security of the United States, McPhillips said.

“It is this commitment to duty that has necessitated the cancellation of what would undoubtedly have been an exceptional evening of camaraderie and tradition,” he said, expressing gratitude for the “immense effort” to those who spent the time and energy to plan the event.

Rapid Response Force of 2,000 U.S. Marines Heading Toward Israel: Report

A rapid response force consisting of 2,000 U.S. Marines is heading toward the waters off Israel, CNN reported, citing a defense official familiar with the plans.

The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), a force of rapid response troops part of the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group, was stationed near Kuwait to complete scheduled exercises but departed early due to ongoing events in the region, Marine Corps Times first reported. The 26th MEU aboard the USS Bataan is now off the coast of Oman and received direction to prepare for a move toward Israel recently, CNN reported.

The U.S. has rapidly moved to crowd the Israeli coastline with U.S. naval power since the Iran-backed Hamas terrorist organization launched a surprise attack on Israel. Tel Aviv declared war on Hamas in response.

U.S. officials say the deployments serve as a show of force to prevent other actors from joining the hostilities against Israel. (Read more from “Rapid Response Force of 2,000 U.S. Marines Heading Toward Israel: Report” HERE)

US Military Osprey Aircraft Crashes With Five Marines Aboard

An MV-22B Osprey aircraft with five U.S. Marines on board went down near Glamis, California, on Wednesday, according to the military.

“An aircraft belonging to [the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing] has crashed near Glamis, CA,” a tweet on the U.S. Marine Corps Twitter account noted. “Contrary to social media rumors, there was no nuclear material on board the aircraft.”

“Update from [the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing]: At approximately 1225 PST, an MV-22B Osprey crashed near Glamis, CA. We are awaiting confirmation of the status of the five Marines who were onboard the aircraft, which was stationed at MCAS Camp Pendleton with Marine Aircraft Group 39,” a subsequent tweet noted. “We ask for the public’s patience as we work diligently with first responders and the unit involved to identify what occurred this afternoon,” another tweet added.

Earlier this year, another Osprey crashed amid NATO training exercises in Norway, leaving four Marines dead. (Read more from “US Military Osprey Aircraft Crashes With Five Marines Aboard” HERE)

More Marines Deploy to Eastern Europe

Three Marine Corps aviation units have joined more than 10,000 U.S. troops mobilized to Eastern Europe and Germany in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Defense Department announced Tuesday.

The Marines already had been on the continent as part of NATO’s Cold Response exercise in Norway, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told Military Times. Now, 200 members of Marine Air Control Unit 28, based at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, are in Lithuania.

At the same time, 10 F/A-18 Hornets and some C-130 Hercules transport planes from Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina, will head to an as-yet-undetermined location, Kirby added, with another 200 personnel.

That brings the number of U.S. troops deployed in response to the war in Ukraine to more than 12,000. To date, the vast majority of troops have been Army and Air Force personnel, though the Navy threw its hat in the ring by sending six EA-18G Growlers to Germany, Kirby announced Monday.

Since the beginning of February, U.S. troops have been building up a presence along NATO’s eastern front and in Germany. The Pentagon started with a commitment of U.S. 7,000 troops mobilizing to individual countries, then later committed another 7,000 as part of the NATO Response Force, though not every one of that group has been mobilized. Mom of Marine Killed in Afghanistan Unloads on Biden

A parent of a Marine who was killed during the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan blasted President Joe Biden on social media after he did not mention the 13 service members who were killed by a suicide bomber during his State of the Union.

Shana Chappell, the mother of Marine Lance Corporal Kareem Nikoui, said in a lengthy statement, Biden did not mention the 13 troops because he knows their blood is on his hands and “You don’t even care!”:

Critical Race Theory ‘Undermines Our Military,’ Warns Retired Marine Lieutenant General

A former Joint Staff director of operations believes current Pentagon officials are not adequately prepared for a military conflict, in part due to cultural factors such as critical race theory.

Retired Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Greg Newbold, in an op-ed for Task & Purpose this week, accused “our most senior politicians and military leaders” of having “a form of dementia when it comes to warfare” and said the subsequent result “is a dangerous and potentially catastrophic malady.”

Newbold, who retired in October 2002 over his opposition to the United States’s invasion of Iraq , argued that the military’s “two main purposes” are to “deter our enemies,” and “if that fails, to defeat them in combat,” and he also alleged that the military “cannot be a mirror image of the society it serves.”

“Values that are admirable in civilian society — sensitivity, individuality, compassion, and tolerance for the less capable — are often antithetical to the traits that deter a potential enemy and win the wars that must be fought: Conformity, discipline, unity,” he wrote.

The retired Pentagon official also pushed back on critical race theory, a decades-old concept that has gotten significant media attention in recent years, which he claimed was inconsistent with what the military needed to do to be successful. Critical race theory is a theory that claims U.S. institutions were created with the implicit design to keep white people ahead of minorities, thus making the only way to achieve a fully just society is to dismantle the system in place.
