Ex-Defense Secretary for Trump Says Former President Is ‘Unfit for Office’

Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper thinks former President Donald Trump is “unfit for office” and that the GOP should look elsewhere for a primary candidate.

Esper said of Trump he “wishes he wouldn’t” run for office after the former president announced his 2024 candidacy on Tuesday night in Mar-a-Lago.

“I think he’s unfit for office,” he said in an interview with CNN. “I thought his remarks were very subdued and uninspiring.”

He added that he hopes the Republican Party will turn its attention to a different candidate rather than backing Trump again.

“I think that its time for the Republican Party, and frankly, both parties, to move on to a next generation of leaders, and particularly leaders that can unify our country and get us back to a more normal governance where we treat each other with dignity and respect, and we work on policy issues and not personal attacks,” Esper said. Trump Responds to Reports He Wanted to Shoot Missiles at Drug Cartel Factories

During a recent interview with “60 Minutes,” former Defense Secretary Mark Esper claimed President Donald Trump proposed the United States take out drug cartel operations in Mexico with missiles.

Over the weekend, President Trump responded to the allegation with “no comment” and addressed a number of other statements Esper made.

Mexican cartels operate industrial-sized methamphetamine and fentanyl labs south of the border and the product is then trafficked into the United States.

“Soldiers and police in Mexico seized an industrial-scale meth and fentanyl lab that was so big it startled investigators, federal prosecutors announced Sunday,” the Associated Press reported in October. “The lab had chemical preparation vats about two stories tall that could process 11,000 pounds (5,000 kilograms) of raw material at a time, said Felipe de Jesus Gallo of the federal Attorney General’s Office.” (Read more from “Trump Responds to Reports He Wanted to Shoot Missiles at Drug Cartel Factories” HERE)

Report: Defense Secretary Mark Esper Prepared Letter of Resignation

President Trump’s defense secretary has reportedly prepared a resignation letter.

Mark Esper, a former Army officer who has been secretary since July 2019, wrote the letter under the impression that he could be forced out of his Cabinet position after the election, three defense officials told NBC News.

This follows an Axios report last month that said Esper, along with FBI Director Chris Wray and CIA Director Gina Haspel, are among those Trump expects to replace if he wins reelection.

At the time, the White House said the president had not made any Cabinet decisions. “We have no personnel announcements at this time, nor would it be appropriate to speculate about changes after the election or in a second term,” White House spokesman Judd Deere told the Washington Examiner. Here’s Why Trump Almost Fired Esper

President Trump was reportedly close to firing Defense Secretary Mark Esper after the Pentagon chief publicly broke with him over deploying active-duty troops during recent protests.

The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that Trump was prepared to ax Esper but was convinced not to do so after he consulted with several advisers and Republican lawmakers. Esper, who knew about the president’s feelings toward him, had also reportedly begun preparations for a resignation letter before being persuaded not to do so.

The tension came to a head when Esper publicly broke with Trump during a hastily called briefing at the Pentagon. The defense chief said he didn’t support the president invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807 to quell demonstrations that began after the death of George Floyd.

“I’ve always believed and continue to believe that the National Guard is best suited for performing domestic support to civil authorities in these situations, in support of local law enforcement. I say this not only as secretary of defense, but also as a former soldier and a former member of the National Guard,” Esper said.

“The option to use active-duty forces in a law enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort and only in the most urgent and dire of situations. We are not in one of those situations now,” he added. (Read more from “Here’s Why Trump Almost Fired Esper” HERE)

Reports: President Trump Not Happy With Defense Secretary Mark Esper

President Trump is not happy with his Defense Secretary, Mark Esper, for comments he made during a press briefing Wednesday opposing using active-duty military forces to quell violent riots across the country and distancing himself from what he called a “photo op” with Trump earlier in the week, according to reports.

Esper stated at a press conference Wednesday that he did not support using active-duty forces in a law enforcement role, just two days after the president ordered them to the capitol, warning he would use them if violence and looting continued.

“The option to use active duty forces in a law enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort, and only in the most urgent and dire of situations. We are not in one of those situations now. I do not support invoking the Insurrection Act,” Esper said.

According to reports, the president was not happy with Esper’s comments. Bloomberg reported:

President Donald Trump and other top aides were upset that Defense Secretary Mark Esper publicly opposed the deployment of active-duty forces to confront protesters in U.S. cities, as Trump has suggested, and viewed the Pentagon chief’s remarks as out of line.
