Mitt Romney Cluelessly Exaggerates Coronavirus Fatality Rates

Simple arithmetic seems to be lost on the politicians, and that error is perpetuating a needless and counterproductive policy destroying our country. Politicians like Mitt Romney don’t seem to understand that the fact that there are so many infections actually makes the fatality rate of the virus remarkably low – a fact that should guide our policies going forward.

The politicians keep referring to widespread outbreaks in prisons, meatpacking plants, and other semi- or fully confined areas with predominantly young populations. Then they refer to a relatively small number of fatalities anecdotally, as if this is the bubonic plague or Ebola. In fact, those case studies demonstrate just how low the fatality rate is for younger people.

During Wednesday’s coronavirus hearing held remotely by the Senate Homeland Security Committee, Mitt Romney began his line of questioning asserting that the president believes that without “the actions he had taken to close down the economy, we’d have had 2 million dead.” Romney was trying to insinuate that the death rate is really as high as “the experts” claimed and that following the “expert” advice saved us from it, even though the lockdowns occurred after the transmission peak. He then wrongly stated that deaths outside the New York area are going up, even though nearly all the deaths are in nursing homes and many of them are earlier deaths only being reported now.

Next, Romney posed the following question to Stanford professor John Ioannidis about what he saw as a conflict in data. On the one hand, Romney suggested, we see all the serology tests and the prison data from southern states showing pretty convincingly that many more people have had the virus, many are asymptomatic, and therefore the death rate for most people is very low. “On the other hand,” asserted Romney, “I look at the data that comes from the meatpacking facilities – the number of people who died … likewise grocery store stocking clerks, I mean a normal flu, you don’t have dozens of people die that are stocking clerks, you don’t have dozens of people die that work in meatpacking processes – what accounts for that phenomenon?”

First, notice the asymmetry behind his “conflicting” data. On the one hand, the data showing this is widespread, largely asymptomatic, and very low-risk beyond defined vulnerable populations is as solid as can be. We have dozens of serology tests from numerous states and countries, all converging on almost the exact same fatality rate. We also have entire prisons that are now being tested, and we see in many places that the majority contracted the virus, yet a majority were asymptomatic and very few died. That is solid, hard data from completely confined and defined populations.

What he said about meatpacking plants and grocery stores, on the other hand, is all anecdotal and based on media reports. Yes, the disease has spread far and wide among those who work indoors with a lot of people (although not as much as in confined populations in prison). And therefore, we are seeing the exact same conclusion of the low fatality rate: few deaths out of many cases. And like always, the few deaths are coming from those very high-risk groups that Romney himself identified. So where is the conflict?

Let’s unpack this.

Roughly 45 meat-processing workers have reportedly died from COVID-19. There are a total of 500,000 workers in the meat and poultry industry – approximately 144,000 in meatpacking plants and 119,000 in meat processing. Even if you limit our denominator just to meatpackers, it is roughly the same as the 146,000 population of federal prisons. 44 individuals have died in federal prisons; thus the fatality rate among meat-processing workers is almost the same as in federal prisons, which Romney already conceded is very low.Likewise, approximately 218 people have died in state prisons, which house about 1.2 million people nationwide.

In fact, they all share the same story. Over 10,000 workers have tested positive for COVID-19 in the meatpacking industry. Right off the bat, that is a 0.45% fatality rate. But as Romney conceded, we know most people are asymptomatic and only a fraction, usually those with symptoms, were tested first, so it’s likely that a much higher number of workers have actually had the virus.

Let’s take the Triumph Foods plant in St. Joseph, Missouri, for example. 412 out of 2,367 tested positive. That is about a 17.4% infection rate. All of them were asymptomatic, and there have been zero deaths among those workers so far.

On May 5, the Des Moines Register reported that in Iowa, four meatpacking plants tested every worker and the infection rate was 58%, 39%, 26%, and 17% respectively. I don’t see reports of any fatalities in those four plants at this point. In Indiana, 890 people, 40%, of a Tyson plant, tested positive, and nobody has died so far.

This is the exact same story as in the southern prisons. The only difference is that because they are completely confined, the number in a given prison who wind up contracting it is usually over 50%. I think a 25% infection rate for meatpacking workers across the board makes sense because that is close to the infection rate we are seeing on ships and among staff in prisons. They all work or live in close quarters but are not fully confined like prisoners are.

If we take a baseline of 25% of meatpacking workers contracting the virus, the same pattern we see in prisons, that would mean there is a 0.125% infection fatality rate, pretty close to the number commonly used for the flu.

This harmonizes very closely with the data of one death out of 1,102 cases on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, also a younger population.

An entire prison in Tennessee was tested, and out of 1,300 cases, there was one death, but he was 67 – much older than the general prison population.

Out of 30,000 detainees in ICE facilities, it wasn’t until yesterday that there was even one fatality. According to ICE, it is still to be determined if he died of COVID-19, but again, he had hypertension and diabetes so severe that several surgeries left him without a right foot. As of now, 60% of those tested so far have been found to be positive.

What about grocery workers? While the numbers might have gone up, as of April 29, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union reported 72 deaths among its 1.3 million workers in grocery, retail, pharmacy, and meatpacking industries. There is no precise data isolating the number of grocery workers, but the New York Times estimated a few days ago from the union that it was 32. In total, there are roughly 2.5 million workers in grocery stores and supermarkets, but I have to assume these were just the deaths among the union workers. These people aren’t quite as confined as meatpacking workers (and meatpackers are included in the 1.3 million), but even if we assume a 10% infection rate, that would be a 0.05% fatality rate, although it would likely be somewhat higher, because some of the union workers are in Canada.

And remember, this virus has been spreading in these places for months. So many more could already have the antibodies but test negative at present. Moreover, a comprehensive new study of the Diamond Princess cruise ship now shows that the asymptomatic rate was really 74 percent (previously thought to be one-third). It’s therefore possible the denominator could be even higher.

Perhaps if Romney and his colleagues would step outside the media’s panic porn bubble for a moment, they would recognize that reams of hard data are remarkably consistent in the risk stratification of this virus. It’s very serious for a lot of people and warranted beefed-up medical resources, sheltering of the vulnerable, and avoiding real large gatherings. But beyond that, the lockdowns were a colossal mistake.

Closing question for Senator Romney: Did you join me, Senator Cotton, and Senator Hawley in mid-January calling for a shutoff of travel from China – when mitigation would actually have worked? Nope. In fact, Romney criticized even Trump’s late-hour shutoff from Europe in mid-March after we witnessed the disaster in Italy. So, which one is it, Romney? Our data meter is confused. On the one hand, you seem really concerned about the virus – only when it comes to imposing worthless lockdowns after the horse left the barn. On the other hand, you opposed any effort to keep as many carriers as possible out of our country in the first place. Rand Paul Tests Positive for Coronavirus

By Buzzfeed News. Republican Sen. Rand Paul has tested positive for the coronavirus, a staff member announced on Sunday.

According to a tweet from the Kentucky Republican’s account, Paul does not have symptoms of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, though he tested positive.

“He is asymptomatic and was tested out of an abundance of caution due to his extensive travel and events,” the tweet said. “He was not aware of any direct contact with any infected person.”

Paul is the first US senator to test positive for the disease, and two members of the House of Representatives — Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart, a Florida Republican, and Utah Democrat Ben McAdams — tested positive last week.

Paul was present at the US Capitol last week as the Senate has remained in session — in spite of recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that people avoid gathering in groups of 10 or larger. His staff began working remotely 10 days ago, a tweet from Paul’s account said. (Read more from “Rand Paul Tests Positive for Coronavirus” HERE)

Mitt Romney Reluctantly Agrees to Subpoena Information About Hunter Biden’s ‘Work’ in Ukraine

By Townhall. Utah Republican Senator Mitt Romney will vote in favor of subpoenaing documents about Hunter Biden’s work for Ukrainian gas company Burisma. Biden was on the board of the notoriously corrupt company while his father, former Vice President Joe Biden, was in charge of the Ukraine profile during the Obama administration. He was paid up to $80,000 per month despite having no experience in the oil and gas industry.

Romney’s decision comes after he voted to convict President Trump on one article of impeachment, abuse of power, in February. President Trump was impeached by Democrats over a July 25, 2020 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which he mentioned potentially corrupt practices by Joe and Hunter Biden.

“There’s a lot of talk about Biden’s son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great. Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you can look into it…It sounds horrible to me,” Trump said.

Romney Claims Senate Probe Into Hunter Biden ‘Appears Political’

By National Review. Senator Mitt Romney (R., Utah) warned Thursday that Senator Ron Johnson’s (R., Wis.) probe into the Bidens and Burisma “appears political,” and would not comment whether he would vote for a subpoena that Johnson is planning.

“There’s no question that the appearance of looking into Burisima and Hunter Biden appears political. I think people are tired of these kind of political investigations,” Romney told reporters, adding that he needs to meet with Johnson to “see what information he has” before deciding on a vote.

But he suggested he was uncomfortable with the probe, implying that it was not within the purview of the Senate Homeland Security Committee — which Johnson chairs and Romney serves on.

“I would hope that there’s something of significance that needs to be evaluated that would be done perhaps the FBI or some other agency, although it’s not as political as perhaps a committee of our body,” he said. “We also have a lot of work to do on matters that are not related to Burisma. We probably ought to focus on those things.” (Read more from “Romney Claims Senate Probe Into Hunter Biden ‘Appears Political’” HERE)

No Surprise, Utah GOP Decides Not to Censure Romney

Instead of censuring Sen. Mitt Romney for his vote to impeach President Donald Trump, the Utah Republican State Central Committee decided Saturday simply to praise the president’s acquittal. . .

The 136 party leaders present from around the state, as part of five-hour meeting at the Salt Lake Board of Realtors building, debated proposals as extreme as calling for Romney’s resignation to as lenient as not even mentioning Romney as it expressed support for Trump.

The middle ground it actually took was passing a watered-down version of a resolution that now says “with zero evidence of a federal crime committed that rises to the level of removal of office, the U.S. Senate voted to fully acquit President Trump; Sen. Mike Lee voted to acquit while Sen. Mitt Romney voted to remove President Trump.”

The resolution expressed support for Trump’s acquittal, and thanked by name Lee and Utah GOP Reps. Chris Stewart, Rob Bishop and John Curtis for supporting the president. It added — in bold lettering — that, “We strongly disagree with the vote cast by Sen. Romney.”

It also added, “The Utah Republican Party calls on all Utah elected Republicans to work with President Trump to implement the conservative policies of the America First agenda that are helping our country succeed.” (Read more from “No Surprise, Utah GOP Decides Not to Censure Romney” HERE)

Utah GOP Considering Resolution Calling for Mitt Romney to ‘Immediately Resign’ From Office

The Utah Republican Party is reportedly considering multiple resolutions following Sen. Mitt Romney’s vote to convict President Donald Trump in the impeachment trial, including a resolution calling for his resignation.

According to local Salt Lake City news outlet 2KUTV, “the Utah Republican Party has pending resolutions on Romney: one that expresses support for Trump’s acquittal, another that supports legislation to recall a U.S Senator and a third that calls for Romney to ‘immediately resign’ from office.”

The Utah GOP will possibly vote on these resolutions on Saturday, February 29, the report also states. It is unclear what kind of support the resolutions have.

Romney was the single Republican who voted for Trump’s removal from office on the charge of abuse of power. He did not, however, vote for Trump’s conviction on the charge of obstruction of Congress. WATCH: Trump Unloads on ‘Secret Democrat Asset’ Mitt Romney

President Donald Trump unloaded on Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) on Wednesday following Romney’s decision to side with the Democrats in the Senate’s impeachment vote, saying that Romney tried to infiltrate his administration and calling him a “secret Democrat asset.”

“Slick, slippery, stealthy,” the ad begins. “Mitt Romney had us fooled. Posing as a Republican, he tried to infiltrate Trump’s administration as Secretary of State.”

“Now his cover is blown,” the ad continued. “Exposed by news reports as a Democrat secret asset.”

The ad then cuts hard into Romney, highlighting his failed presidential campaign against Barack Obama and then showing Trump’s election win against Hillary Clinton.

There is definitely evidence from Romney’s political record to suggest that he is not who he portrays himself to be. (Read more from “WATCH: Trump Unloads on ‘Secret Democrat Asset’ Mitt Romney” HERE)

Romney Loses GOP Support After Challenging Trump on Impeachment

Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney lost support from Republicans and independents in his home state during the weeks after he called for witnesses in President Trump’s Senate impeachment trial, a new poll shows.

The Morning Consult survey found support for Romney, 72, going down after he called for former national security adviser John Bolton to testify at Trump’s impeachment trial, which began on Thursday.

The poll shows the senator’s approval rating falling among Utah Republicans from September through December 2019, and independents also shifted to disapproving of Romney over the quarter.

In the prior quarter, 65% of Utah Republicans supported Romney, and while a majority still do presently, that number sank to 57%.

The numbers are particularly striking for Utah, one of the most Republican states in the country. Romney romped to victory in his 2018 Senate bid and has been considered a local hero of sorts among his fellow Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints constituents and others. WATCH: Trump Brands Romney a ‘Democrat Secret Asset’

President Donald Trump slammed Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) as a “Democrat secret asset” who attempted to “infiltrate” his administration as secretary of state following the 2016 election in a video shared to Twitter Friday evening.

In the one-minute video, the narrator states Romney’s cover was “blown,” and he was “exposed by news reports as a Democrat secret asset.” The video then shows highlights of the Utah Republican’s 2012 presidential campaign defeat, following by clips of the president’s successful bid in 2016. President-Elect Trump briefly considered Romney for the role of secretary of state, but ultimatly selected Exxon Mobile CEO Rex Tillerson for the high-profile post.

The video’s release comes as Romney, a longtime Trump critic, has criticized the president’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from northern Syria and his suggestion for China and Ukraine to investigate allegations of corruption against former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden. . .

Trump tweeted:

“I’m hearing that the Great People of Utah are considering their vote for their Pompous Senator, Mitt Romney, to be a big mistake. I agree! He is a fool who is playing right into the hands of the Do Nothing Democrats! #IMPEACHMITTROMNEY.

Trump Called for Romney’s Impeachment in Tweet, but Could That Actually Happen?

You never quite know when President Trump might fire off a tweet, targeting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., or House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif. . .

The conventional argument is that no, House members and senators cannot be impeached. That’s true for the most part – even though the House did impeach Tennessee Sen. William Blount – twice – in the 18th Century. But we’ll come back to that in a minute.

Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution grants the House “the sole Power of Impeachment.” Article I, Section 3 of the Constitution awards the Senate “the sole Power to try all Impeachments.” Then, Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution articulates who is eligible for impeachment: “The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery or other High Crimes and Misdemeanors.” . . .

It was determined that a “civil Officer” is someone subject to presidential appointment and Senate confirmation – like a cabinet official or a federal judge. That’s why the House has impeached various federal judges over the years, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Chase (who bore the nickname “Old Bacon Face”) and Secretary of War William Belknap. In other words, House members and senators aren’t “civil Officers,” and thus, exempt from impeachment.

There’s no mechanism in the Constitution for a voter “recall” as is possible for some state officeholders. The president, vice president, House and Senate members serve a fixed term. However, Article I, Section 5 of the Constitution grants the House and Senate authority to “punish its Members for disorderly Behaviour, and, with the Concurrence of two thirds, expel a Member.” (Read more from “Trump Called for Romney’s Impeachment in Tweet, but Could That Actually Happen?” HERE)

Report: Mitt Romney Has Been Working Behind the Scenes in Anticipation of a Trump Impeachment Trial

The following is an excerpt from Blaze Media’s daily Capitol Hill Brief email newsletter:

According to a new report, Mitt Romney may not be planning on challenging President Donald Trump on the campaign trail, but he’s making moves to undermine him in a likely Senate impeachment trial. Vanity Fair reports that Romney has “firmly decided” against primarying the president, but he has been reaching out to key Republican Senate offices on the subject of impeachment.

“He could have tremendous influence in the impeachment process as the lone voice of conscience in the Republican caucus,” a Romney adviser told the magazine, though the senator’s office didn’t comment on the story. “Romney is the one guy who could bring along Susan Collins, Cory Gardner, Ben Sasse. Romney is the pressure point in the impeachment process. That’s why the things he’s saying are freaking Republicans out.”

The longtime, intermittent feud between Romney and Trump has heated up again amid Democrats’ push for impeachment and the foreign controversy behind it. After Romney called Trump’s suggestion that China and the Ukraine look into Joe and Hunter Bidens’ alleged corruption “wrong and appalling,” Trump responded the next day by calling Romney a “pompous ass” who “never knew how to win.” (For more from the author of “Report: Mitt Romney Has Been Working Behind the Scenes in Anticipation of a Trump Impeachment Trial” please click HERE)
